58 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
59 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
60 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
61
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +000062- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released
63 libffi3.0.5 version, apart from some small changes to
64 Modules/_ctypes/libffi/configure.ac.
65
Fred Drake46c58c12008-04-04 05:41:30 +000066- Issue #2385: distutils.core.run_script() makes __file__ available, so the
67 controlled environment will more closely mirror the typical script
68 environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to data files.
69
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +000070Tests
71-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +000072- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining ports
73 to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an effort to
74 facilitate running multiple instances of the entire regression test suite
75 in parallel without issue. test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such
76 that it will always return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case
77 with the previous implementation, especially if socket options had been
78 set that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
79 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception if it
80 is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the SO_REUSEADDR or
81 SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if available, bind_port()
82 will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on the socket it's been passed.
83 This currently only applies to Windows. This option prevents any other
84 sockets from binding to the host/port we've bound to, thus removing the
85 possibility of the 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it,
86 that occurs when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a
87 host/port that's already been bound by another socket. The optional
88 preferred port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
89 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
90
91 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will pass
92 a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an unused port.
93 The temporary socket object is then closed and deleted, and the port is
94 returned. This method should only be used for obtaining an unused port
95 in order to pass to an external program (i.e. the -accept [port] argument
96 to openssl's s_server mode) or as a parameter to a server-oriented class
97 that doesn't give you direct access to the underlying socket used.
98
99 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used for
100 the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and connect).
101
102 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
103 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
104 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
105 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
106
107 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test suite to
108 run in parallel without issue.

110Build
111-----
112
Thomas Hellerdc96a772008-04-04 10:07:55 +0000113- Issue #2544: On HP-UX systems, use 'gcc -shared' for linking when
114 gcc is used as compiler.
115
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +0000116C API
117-----
118
Christian Heimes6f341092008-04-18 23:13:07 +0000119- Added implementation of copysign, acosh, asinh, atanh and log1p
120 to the new files Include/pymath.h and Python/pymath.h for
121 platforms which provide the functions through their libm. The
122 files also contains several helpers and constants for math.

352-----------------
353
Fred Drakea8ee94b2008-03-01 02:45:07 +0000354- Issue #2051: pyc and pyo files are no longer created with permission
Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +0000355 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +0000356
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000357- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
358
359- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000360
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000361- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000362 issue 215555 for a discussion.
363
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000364- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
365 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
366 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
367 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
368 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
369 module is:
370 from future_builtins import hex, oct
371
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000372- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
373 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
374 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
375 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
376 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
377 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
378
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000379- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
380 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
381 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
382 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
383 PyObject_Format().
384
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000385- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted __del__
386 methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent state.
387
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000388- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

393 imaginary part.
394
Andrew M. Kuchlingc6511a82008-03-04 01:48:26 +0000395- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation in order
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000396 to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back memory to the
397 OS earlier.
398

401
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000402- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
403 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
404
Christian Heimes6075a822008-02-06 12:44:34 +0000405- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256 entries
406 each.

428 same object as the func_code attribute of the function that produced the
429 generator.
430
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000431- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the compiler,
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000432 even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is supposed to be run when
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000433 the condition is false. Now the compiler correctly emits bytecode for the
434 "else" suite.

557 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger recursion
558 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
559 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past
560 its limit. Fixes crashers infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.

591 inherited from a builtin base.
592
Vinay Sajip8549ce32007-05-06 17:53:37 +0000593- When __slots__ are set to a unicode string, make it work the same as
Neal Norwitzcbd9ee62007-04-14 05:25:50 +0000594 setting a plain string, ie don't expand to single letter identifiers.

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000607- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
608 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
609 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
610 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
611 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000612 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
613 as supported by type.__new__().

617 __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath module now
618 can operate on objects that define a __complex__() method.
