12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +000015- Apply security patches from Apple.
16
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +000017- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
18 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
19
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000020- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
21 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
22
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000023- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
24 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
25 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
26
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000027- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
28 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
29 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
30 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
31 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
32 failed have been fixed.
33

38 asking for a specific length.
39
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +000040- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
41 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
42

51
52- Issue #3303: Fix a crash in locale.strcoll() when calling it with
53 invalid arguments.
54
55- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
56 with None arguments.
57
58- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
59 configuration files.
60
61- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
62
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +000063- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
64 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
65 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
66
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000067

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000071*Release date: 17-Jul-2008*
72
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +000073Core and Builtins
74-----------------
75
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +000076- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
77 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
78 an integer using operator.index().
79
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +000080- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
81 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
82
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +000083- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
84 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
85
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +000086- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
87 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
88 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
89
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +000090- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
91 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
92 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
93 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
94 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
95 level.
96
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +000097- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
98 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
99 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
100 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
101 all imports from that module to fail.
102
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000103- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
104 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
105 new-style classes.
106
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000107- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
108 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
109 another file in sys.stdout.
110
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000111- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
112 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
113 another thread's dictionary.
114
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000115- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
116 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
117 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
118 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
119 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
120 10, -1).
121
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000122- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
123 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
124 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000125
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000126- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
127 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
128 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000129
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000130Library
131-------

138
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000139- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
140 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
141

145 a valid dlerror() message.
146
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000147- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
148 incomplete structure was created.
149

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000156- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
157 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000158 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000159 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
160 merged into trunk.
161
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000162- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

167
168- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously

176 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
177
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000178- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
179 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().

Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +0000185 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
186 Prevents a deadlock.
187
Gregory P. Smithc4691ec2008-07-07 05:09:12 +0000188- Issue #3094: httplib.HTTPSConnection Host: headers no longer include the
189 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
190 default https port (443).
191

193 up in the child process to prevent deadlock and report proper thread counts
194 if the new process uses the threading module.

233 argument being anything other than a dict or None. Also fixed a bug in error
234 handling when 'message' and 'category' were both set to None, triggering a
235 bus error.
236
Amaury Forgeot d'Arca8919fe2008-06-16 19:12:42 +0000237- Issue #3100: Corrected a crash on deallocation of a subclassed weakref which

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000627- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
628 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
629 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
630 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
631 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
632 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
633 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
634 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000697- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
698 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
699 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
700 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
701 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
702 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
703 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
704 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
705 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
706 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
707 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
708 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
709 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
710 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
711 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
712 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
713 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
714 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
715 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
716 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
717
718 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
719 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
720 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
721 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
722 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
723 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
724 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
725 access to the underlying socket used.
726
727 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
728 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
729 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000730
731 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000732 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000733 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
734 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
735
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000736 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
737 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1015
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001016- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1017 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1018 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1019 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1020 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1021 module is:
1022 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1023
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001024- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1025 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1026 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1027 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1028 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1029 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1030
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001031- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1032 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1033 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1034 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1035 PyObject_Format().
1036
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001037- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1038 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1039 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001040
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001041- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

1049 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1050 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001051
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001052- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a

1067 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1068 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001069
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001070- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they
