19------------------
20
Gregory P. Smith671c5d92008-04-09 18:18:43 +000021- zlib.decompressobj().flush(value) no longer crashes the interpreter when
22 passed a value less than or equal to zero.
23
Brett Cannone9746892008-04-12 23:44:07 +000024- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the original Python
25 code has been kept as backup). This will allow for using the 'warning's
26 machinery in such places as the parser where use of pure Python code is not
27 possible.

30-------
31
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc02f33b42008-04-08 23:10:07 +000032- Issue #2408: The ``_types`` module, which was used as in implementation
33 detail of the public ``types`` module, has been removed and replaced by pure
34 python code.
35
Mark Hammond495cf992008-04-07 01:53:39 +000036- Issue #2513: distutils on Windows is now capable of cross-compiling
37 extension modules between 32 and 64 bit platforms. See the distutls
38 build documentation for more information.
39
Gregory P. Smithaa63d0d2008-04-06 23:11:17 +000040- Issue #815646: Individual file objects may now be used from multiple
41 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
42 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
43 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
44
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +000045- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released
46 libffi3.0.5 version, apart from some small changes to
47 Modules/_ctypes/libffi/configure.ac.
48
Fred Drake46c58c12008-04-04 05:41:30 +000049- Issue #2385: distutils.core.run_script() makes __file__ available, so the
50 controlled environment will more closely mirror the typical script
51 environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to data files.
52
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +000053Tests
54-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +000055- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining ports
56 to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an effort to
57 facilitate running multiple instances of the entire regression test suite
58 in parallel without issue. test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such
59 that it will always return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case
60 with the previous implementation, especially if socket options had been
61 set that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
62 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception if it
63 is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the SO_REUSEADDR or
64 SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if available, bind_port()
65 will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on the socket it's been passed.
66 This currently only applies to Windows. This option prevents any other
67 sockets from binding to the host/port we've bound to, thus removing the
68 possibility of the 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it,
69 that occurs when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a
70 host/port that's already been bound by another socket. The optional
71 preferred port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
72 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
73
74 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will pass
75 a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an unused port.
76 The temporary socket object is then closed and deleted, and the port is
77 returned. This method should only be used for obtaining an unused port
78 in order to pass to an external program (i.e. the -accept [port] argument
79 to openssl's s_server mode) or as a parameter to a server-oriented class
80 that doesn't give you direct access to the underlying socket used.
81
82 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used for
83 the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and connect).
84
85 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
86 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
87 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
88 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
89
90 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test suite to
91 run in parallel without issue.

329Core and builtins
330-----------------
331
Fred Drakea8ee94b2008-03-01 02:45:07 +0000332- Issue #2051: pyc and pyo files are no longer created with permission
Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +0000333 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +0000334
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000335- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
336
337- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000338
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000339- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000340 issue 215555 for a discussion.
341
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000342- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
343 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
344 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
345 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
346 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
347 module is:
348 from future_builtins import hex, oct
349
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000350- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
351 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
352 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
353 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
354 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
355 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
356
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000357- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
358 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
359 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
360 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
361 PyObject_Format().
362
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000363- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted __del__
364 methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent state.
365
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000366- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
367 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access a slot
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +0000368 on a registered virtual subclass.
369
Christian Heimes2f0da532008-02-15 06:57:08 +0000370- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as real or
371 imaginary part.
372
Andrew M. Kuchlingc6511a82008-03-04 01:48:26 +0000373- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation in order
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000374 to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back memory to the
375 OS earlier.
376
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +0000377- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a subclass of
378 collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set to a bound method.
379
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000380- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
381 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
382
Christian Heimes6075a822008-02-06 12:44:34 +0000383- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256 entries
384 each.
385
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc578a8ca2008-02-04 20:53:14 +0000386- Patch #1953: Added ``sys._compact_freelists()`` and the C API functions
387 ``PyInt_CompactFreeList`` and ``PyFloat_CompactFreeList``
Christian Heimes422051a2008-02-04 18:00:12 +0000388 to compact the internal free lists of pre-allocted ints and floats.
389
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +0000390- Bug #1983: Fixed return type of fork(), fork1() and forkpty() calls.
391 Python expected the return type int but the fork familie returns pi_t.
392
Mark Dickinson105be772008-01-31 22:17:37 +0000393- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they appear
394 in the same code unit.
395

397 the collections.Sequence API.
398
Christian Heimes4d4f2702008-01-30 11:32:37 +0000399- Patch #1970 by Antoine Pitrou: Speedup unicode whitespace and linebreak
400 detection
401
Christian Heimes422051a2008-02-04 18:00:12 +0000402- Added ``PyType_ClearCache()`` and ``sys._clear_type_cache`` to clear the
Christian Heimes908caac2008-01-27 23:34:59 +0000403 internal lookup cache for ref leak tests.
404
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +0000405- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is the
406 same object as the func_code attribute of the function that produced the
407 generator.
408
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000409- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the compiler,
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000410 even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is supposed to be run when
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000411 the condition is false. Now the compiler correctly emits bytecode for the
412 "else" suite.
413
Guido van Rossumeead05f2008-01-24 18:21:02 +0000414- A few crashers fixed: weakref_in_del.py (issue #1377858);

Christian Heimesb2302ba2008-01-23 17:15:06 +0000419 suppressed while an extension is loaded by calling SetErrorMode in
420 dynload_win.c. The error is still reported properly.
421
Christian Heimes082c9b02008-01-23 14:20:50 +0000422- Bug #1915: Python compiles with --enable-unicode=no again. However

Christian Heimesf31b69f2008-01-14 03:42:48 +0000441 makes structseqs (e.g. the return value of os.stat) more readable.
Christian Heimes9c201962008-01-14 03:33:52 +0000442
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4c270c2008-01-14 00:29:41 +0000443- Patch #1700288: added a type attribute cache that caches method accesses,
444 resulting in speedups in heavily object-oriented code.
445
Neal Norwitz3fc15b82008-01-10 05:42:58 +0000446- Bug #1776: __import__() no longer accepts filenames on any platform.
447 The first parameter to __import__() must be a valid module name.
Christian Heimes3403f152008-01-09 19:56:33 +0000448
Georg Brandlaed6c662008-01-07 17:25:53 +0000449- Patch #1668: renamed THREADDEBUG envvar to PYTHONTHREADDEBUG.
450

512
Raymond Hettinger8f669372007-10-03 21:18:11 +0000513- The enumerate() builtin function is no longer bounded to sequences smaller
514 than LONG_MAX. Formerly, it raised an OverflowError. Now, automatically
515 shifts from ints to longs.
516
Brett Cannon0b14f242007-09-30 19:45:10 +0000517- Issue #1686386: Tuple's tp_repr did not take into account the possibility of
518 having a self-referential tuple, which is possible from C code. Nor did
519 object's tp_str consider that a type's tp_str could do something that could
520 lead to an inifinite recursion. Py_ReprEnter() and Py_EnterRecursiveCall(),
521 respectively, fixed the issues.
522
Brett Cannon01531592007-09-17 03:28:34 +0000523- Issue #1164: It was possible to trigger deadlock when using the 'print'
524 statement to write to a file since the GIL was not released as needed. Now
525 PyObject_Print() does the right thing along with various tp_print
526 implementations of the built-in types and those in the collections module.
527
Brett Cannon4c20bc42007-09-11 21:02:28 +0000528- Issue #1147: Exceptions were directly allowing string exceptions in their

532 list by using the recursion counter.
533
Brett Cannon1e534b52007-09-07 04:18:30 +0000534- Issue #1202533: Fix infinite recursion calls triggered by calls to
535 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger recursion
536 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
537 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past
538 its limit. Fixes crashers infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.
539
Martin v. Löwisa5136192007-09-04 14:19:28 +0000540- Patch #1031213: Decode source line in SyntaxErrors back to its original source

Neal Norwitz0ac60192007-05-27 04:08:54 +0000553- Add new attribute names for function objects. All the func_* become
554 __*__ attributes. (Some already existed, e.g., __doc__ and __name__.)
555
Neal Norwitz8b2bfbc2007-05-23 06:35:32 +0000556- Add -3 option to the interpreter to warn about features that are
557 deprecated and will be changed/removed in Python 3.0.
558

560 calls.
561
Collin Winter62903052007-05-18 23:11:24 +0000562- except clauses may now be spelled either "except E, target:" or
563 "except E as target:". This is to provide forwards compatibility with
564 Python 3.0.
565
Brett Cannon229cee22007-05-05 01:34:02 +0000566- Deprecate BaseException.message as per PEP 352.
567

569 inherited from a builtin base.
570
Vinay Sajip8549ce32007-05-06 17:53:37 +0000571- When __slots__ are set to a unicode string, make it work the same as
Neal Norwitzcbd9ee62007-04-14 05:25:50 +0000572 setting a plain string, ie don't expand to single letter identifiers.
573
Raymond Hettinger13936692007-04-11 18:40:58 +0000574- Request #1191699: Slices can now be pickled.

582
Neal Norwitzaa754b72007-03-21 06:39:48 +0000583- Remove unused file Python/fmod.c.
584
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000585- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
586 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
587 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
588 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
589 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000590 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
591 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000592
Georg Brandl2b869942007-03-17 16:08:45 +0000593- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an object
594 to complex using its __complex__() method before falling back to the
595 __float__() method. Therefore, the functions in the cmath module now
596 can operate on objects that define a __complex__() method.
597
Žiga Seilnacht6f2d09c2007-03-16 11:59:38 +0000598- Patch #1623563: allow __class__ assignment for classes with __slots__.
