13-----------------
14
Hirokazu Yamamoto10a018c2008-10-09 10:00:30 +000015- On windows, os.chdir given unicode was not working if GetCurrentDirectoryW
16 returned a path longer than MAX_PATH. (But It's doubtful this code path is
17 really executed because I cannot move to such directory on win2k)
18
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd78b9dc2008-10-07 20:32:10 +000019- Issue #4069: When set.remove(element) is used with a set element, the element
20 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
21 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
22 it correctly refers to the initial element.

123-----------------
124
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000125- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
126
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000127- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
128 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
129 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
130 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
131 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
132 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
133 64bit values.
134
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000135- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
136 error.
137
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000138- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
139 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
140 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
141 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
142
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000143- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
144 a unicode argument.
145
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +0000146- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
147
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000148- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000149 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000150 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
151
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000152- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000153 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
154 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
155 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
156 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
157 type object.
158
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000159- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
160
161- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
162
163- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
164
165- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
166
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000167- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
168 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
169
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000170- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
171 ``__delslice__``.
172
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000173- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
174 library targets in the Makefile.
175
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +0000176- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
177 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
178 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
179

186-------
187
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc24cb3822008-09-11 20:56:13 +0000188- Issue #3640: Pickling a list or a dict uses less local variables, to reduce
189 stack usage in the case of deeply nested objects.

194
Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +0000195- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
196 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
197 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000297
298Core and Builtins
299-----------------
300
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000301- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
302 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
303 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
304 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
305 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
306 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
307 default.
308
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000309- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
310 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
311
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000312- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
313 value again.
314
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000315- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
316 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
317 and introducing s*.
318
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000319- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict

321
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000322- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
323 ValueError consistently across platforms.
324
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000325- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
326 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
327 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
328
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000329- Apply security patches from Apple.
330
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000331- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
332 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
333
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000334- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
335 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
336
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000337- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
338 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
339 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
340
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000341- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
342 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
343 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
344 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
345 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
346 failed have been fixed.

355
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000356- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
357 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
358 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
359
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000360- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
361 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
362 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
363 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
364 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,

366
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000367- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things

409
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000410- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise

412
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000413- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"

461
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000462- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
463 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
464 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
465
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000466- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000490*Release date: 17-Jul-2008*
491
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000492Core and Builtins
493-----------------
494
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000495- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
496 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
497 an integer using operator.index().
498
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000499- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
500 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
501
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000502- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
503 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
504
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000505- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
506 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
507 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
508
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000509- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
510 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
511 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
512 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
513 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
514 level.
515
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000516- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
517 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
518 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
519 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
520 all imports from that module to fail.
521
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000522- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
523 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
524 new-style classes.
525
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000526- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
527 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
528 another file in sys.stdout.
529
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000530- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
531 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
532 another thread's dictionary.
533
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000534- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
535 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
536 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
537 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
538 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
539 10, -1).
540
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000541- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
542 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
543 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000544
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000545- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
546 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
547 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000548

553 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
554 error when they failed.
555
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000556- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000564- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
565 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
566
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000567- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X

571
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000572- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an

Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000580
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000581- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
582 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000583 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000584 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
585 merged into trunk.
586
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000587- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000595 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
Martin v. Löwis8c436412008-07-03 12:51:14 +0000596
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000597- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000598 when completed.
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +0000599
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000600- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
601 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
602
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000603- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

611 Prevents a deadlock.
612
Gregory P. Smithc4691ec2008-07-07 05:09:12 +0000613- Issue #3094: httplib.HTTPSConnection Host: headers no longer include the
614 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001055- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the

1057 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1058 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001124
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001125- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1126 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1127 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1128 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1129 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1130 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1131 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1132 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1133 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1134 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1135 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1136 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1137 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1138 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1139 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1140 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1141 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1142 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1143 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1144 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1145
1146 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1147 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1148 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1149 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1150 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1151 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1152 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1153 access to the underlying socket used.
1154
1155 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1156 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1157 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001158
1159 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001160 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1443
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001444- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1445 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1446 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1447 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1448 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1449 module is:
1450 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1451
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001452- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1453 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1454 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1455 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1456 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1457 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1458
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001459- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1460 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1461 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1462 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1463 PyObject_Format().
1464

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001698- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1699 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1700 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1701 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
1702 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001703 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
1704 as supported by type.__new__().
