11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000015- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
16 a unicode argument.

19
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000020- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000021 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000022 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
23
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000024- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000025 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
26 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
27 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
28 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
29 type object.
30
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +000031- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.

43 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
44
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +000045- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
46 ``__delslice__``.
47
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +000048- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
49 library targets in the Makefile.
50
Benjamin Peterson14cb6bc2008-08-26 17:08:40 +000051C-API

69 to the urlparse one. Added a PendingDeprecationWarning in the old
70 module, it will be deprecated in the future.
71
Marc-André Lemburgb339b2a2008-09-03 11:13:56 +000072- Issue #2562: Fix distutils PKG-INFO writing logic to allow having

106 from the same python interpreter, some environment variables would grow
107 without limit.
108
Benjamin Peterson37346b22008-08-23 20:27:43 +0000109- Issue #3643: Added a few more checks to _testcapi to prevent segfaults by

126
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000127*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000128
129Core and Builtins
130-----------------
131
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000132- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
133 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
134 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
135 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
136 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
137 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
138 default.
139
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000140- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
141 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
142
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000143- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
144 value again.
145
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000146- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
147 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
148 and introducing s*.
149
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000150- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
151 object was stored in the freelist.
152
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000153- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
154 ValueError consistently across platforms.
155
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000156- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
157 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
158 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
159
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000160- Apply security patches from Apple.
161
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000162- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
163 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
164
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000165- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
166 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
167
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000168- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
169 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
170 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
171
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000172- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
173 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
174 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
175 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
176 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
177 failed have been fixed.
178
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000179Library
180-------
181
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000182- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
183
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000184- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
185 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
186
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000187- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
188 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
189 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
190
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000191- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
192 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
193 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
194 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
195 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
196 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
197
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000198- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
199 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
200
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000201- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
202
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000203- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
204
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000205- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
206
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000207- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
208 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
209
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000210- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
211 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
212
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000213- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
214 in a redirect.
215
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000216- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000217 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000218
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000219- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
220 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
221
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000222- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
223 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
224 regular expression.
225
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000226- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
227 thread-safe.
228
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000229- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
230 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
231 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
232
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000233- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
234
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000235- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
236 menu entries were not deleted.
237
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000238- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
239 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
240
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000241- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
242 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
243
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000244- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
245 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
246 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
247
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000248- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
249 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
250 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
251
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000252- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
253 the reload() built-in has been removed.
254

Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000256 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000257 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,

261 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000262
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000263- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
264 raised an AttributeError.
265

Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000267 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
268 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000269
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +0000270- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification

292
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000293- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a

322
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000323Core and Builtins
324-----------------
325
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000326- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
327 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
328 an integer using operator.index().
329
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000330- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
331 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
332
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000333- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
334 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
335
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000336- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
337 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
338 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
339
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000340- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
341 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
342 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
343 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
344 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
345 level.
346
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000347- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
348 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
349 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
350 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
351 all imports from that module to fail.
352
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000353- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
354 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
355 new-style classes.
356
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000357- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
358 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
359 another file in sys.stdout.
360
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000361- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
362 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
363 another thread's dictionary.
364
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000365- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
366 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
367 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
368 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
369 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
370 10, -1).
371
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000372- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
373 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
374 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000375
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000376- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
377 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
378 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000379
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000380Library
381-------
382
Thomas Heller57adf222008-08-14 19:10:48 +0000383- Issue #3554: ctypes.string_at and ctypes.wstring_at did call Python
384 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
385 error when they failed.
386
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000387- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

394
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000395- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
396 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
397
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000398- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X

Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000400- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000412- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
413 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000414 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000415 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
416 merged into trunk.

Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000431- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
432 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
433
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000434- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

445 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
446 default https port (443).

449 up in the child process to prevent deadlock and report proper thread counts
450 if the new process uses the threading module.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000886- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
887 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
888 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
889 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
890 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
891 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
892 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
893 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000956- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
957 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
958 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
959 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
960 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
961 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
962 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
963 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
964 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
965 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
966 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
967 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
968 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
969 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
970 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
971 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
972 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
973 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
974 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
975 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
976
977 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
978 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
979 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
980 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
981 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
982 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
983 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
984 access to the underlying socket used.
985
986 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
987 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
988 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000989
990 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000991 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000992 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
993 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
994
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000995 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
996 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +00001271
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001272- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001273 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1274
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001275- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1276 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1277 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1278 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1279 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1280 module is:
1281 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1282
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001283- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1284 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1285 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1286 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1287 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1288 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1289
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001290- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1291 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1292 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1293 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1294 PyObject_Format().
1295
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001296- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1297 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1298 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001299
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001300- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001307- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1308 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1309 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001310
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001311- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1312 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1313 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001314
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001315- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
1316 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
1317

1327 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001328

1343 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001344
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001345- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the
1346 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1347 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1348 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.
