Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000263
264Core and builtins
265-----------------
266
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000267- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000268 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
269 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000270
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000271 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
272 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
273 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
274 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
275 exception, logged, etc.
276
277 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
278 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000279
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000280- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
281
282- Fix bug related to __len__ functions using values > 2**32 on 64-bit machines
283 with new-style classes.
284
285- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
286 classic classes.
287
288- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
289 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
290 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
291 to effectively use __index__.
292
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +0000293- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
294 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
295
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +0000296- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.

299 sys.stdin is closed.
300
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +0000301- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
302 the Python dll again.
303
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000304- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
305 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
306 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
307 will be regenerated.
308
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +0000309- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
310 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
311 immediately popped off the stack.
312
Georg Brandle9462c72006-08-04 18:03:37 +0000313- Fixed a reference-counting problem in property().

Neil Schemenauer4c6b0d52006-08-16 23:38:05 +0000319- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
320 generated for generator expressions.
321
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +0000322- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
323 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
324 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
325 to be maintained manually as static string literal.
326
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000327- If the Python part of a ctypes callback function returns None,
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000328 and this cannot be converted to the required C type, an exception is
329 printed with PyErr_WriteUnraisable. Before this change, the C
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000330 callback returned arbitrary values to the calling code.
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000331
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000332- The __repr__ method of a NULL ctypes.py_object() no longer raises
Thomas Hellerb0aa98f2006-08-16 14:07:44 +0000333 an exception.
334
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000335- uuid.UUID now has a bytes_le attribute. This returns the UUID in
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000336 little-endian byte order for Windows. In addition, uuid.py gained some
Anthony Baxter58179592006-08-16 13:08:25 +0000337 workarounds for clocks with low resolution, to stop the code yielding
338 duplicate UUIDs.
339
Kurt B. Kaiserd112bc72006-08-16 05:01:42 +0000340- Patch #1540892: site.py Quitter() class attempts to close sys.stdin
341 before raising SystemExit, allowing IDLE to honor quit() and exit().
342
Neal Norwitzbf8c1952006-08-15 04:14:57 +0000343- Bug #1224621: make tabnanny recognize IndentationErrors raised by tokenize.
344
Georg Brandl7a1af772006-08-14 21:55:28 +0000345- Patch #1536071: trace.py should now find the full module name of a
346 file correctly even on Windows.
347
Georg Brandl0a7d1bb2006-08-11 07:26:10 +0000348- logging's atexit hook now runs even if the rest of the module has
349 already been cleaned up.
350
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000351- Bug #1112549, fix DoS attack on cgi.FieldStorage.
Guido van Rossum133f4e42006-08-10 17:42:50 +0000352
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000353- Bug #1531405, format_exception no longer raises an exception if
354 str(exception) raised an exception.
355
Neil Schemenauer06ded092006-08-04 16:20:30 +0000356- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be

427Core and builtins
428-----------------
429
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000430- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +0000431 returned a long (see PEP 353).
432
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +0000433- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
434
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +0000435- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
436 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
437 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
438
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +0000439- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
440 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
441
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000442- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
443 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
444 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
445 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
446
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000447- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
448 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
449 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
450 the code to make that compiler happy again.
451
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +0000452- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.
453

460
Neal Norwitz84be93b2006-07-16 01:50:38 +0000461- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code within a function
462 had more than 255 blank lines.
463
Georg Brandl9dceedb2006-07-12 15:31:17 +0000464- Patch #1521179: Python now accepts the standard options ``--help`` and
465 ``--version`` as well as ``/?`` on Windows.
466
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000467- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000468 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000469 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000470
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000471- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000472 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000473 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,
474 mapping the faux "thread id" 0 to the current frame.
475
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000476- Bug #1525447: build on MacOS X on a case-sensitive filesystem.

Martin v. Löwis961b91b2006-08-02 13:53:55 +0000482- Correction of patch #1455898: In the mbcs decoder, set final=False
483 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
484
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000485- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or
486 KeyboardInterrupt.
487
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +0000488- Bug #1525866: Don't copy directory stat times in
Martin v. Löwis4e678382006-07-30 13:00:31 +0000489 shutil.copytree on Windows
490
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000491- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
492 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
493
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000494- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000495 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,
Fred Drakefbdeaad2006-07-29 16:56:15 +0000496 #1513611, and probably others.
497
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +0000498- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
499 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
500
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000501- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
502 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
503 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
504 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
505 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
506
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000507- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept
Martin v. Löwis1f30c372006-07-30 13:14:05 +0000508 in sync with sys.version_info[:3].
Martin v. Löwis997ceff2006-07-27 06:38:16 +0000509
Martin v. Löwis9298eff2006-07-26 12:12:56 +0000510- Bug #978833: Really close underlying socket in _socketobject.close.
511
Georg Brandl8c036cc2006-08-20 13:15:39 +0000512- Bug #1459963: urllib and urllib2 now normalize HTTP header names with
513 title().
Georg Brandl0619a322006-07-26 07:40:17 +0000514
Georg Brandlcf0c1722006-07-26 07:23:32 +0000515- Patch #1525766: In pkgutil.walk_packages, correctly pass the onerror callback
516 to recursive calls and call it with the failing package name.
517
Martin v. Löwis0b483032006-07-25 09:53:12 +0000518- Bug #1525817: Don't truncate short lines in IDLE's tool tips.
519
Georg Brandlc13c34c2006-07-24 14:09:56 +0000520- Patch #1515343: Fix printing of deprecated string exceptions with a
521 value in the traceback module.
522
Greg Ward48fae7a2006-07-23 16:05:51 +0000523- Resync optparse with Optik 1.5.3: minor tweaks for/to tests.
524
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000525- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
526
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000527- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
528 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
529 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
530 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
531 tuple pre-2.4.
532
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000533- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
534
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000535- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
536 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
537 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
538 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
539 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
540 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
541 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
542 charset and language parts).
543
544 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
545 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
546
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000547- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
548
549- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
550 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
551
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000552- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
553 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
554 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
555 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

562 a socket operation on a socket with a timeout, the exception will be
563 caught correctly. Previously, the exception was not caught.
564
Thomas Heller1393d6a2006-07-28 21:43:20 +0000565- Patch #1529514: The _ctypes extension is now compiled on more
566 openbsd target platforms.
567
Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +0000568- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had

570
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000571- Bug #1471938: Fix curses module build problem on Solaris 8; patch by

Thomas Hellerce049a02006-07-14 17:51:14 +0000576- Patch #1521817: Index range checking on ctypes arrays containing
577 exactly one element enabled again. This allows iterating over these
578 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
579
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000580- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was

583
Thomas Heller47d7a062006-07-12 08:43:47 +0000584- Bug #1467450: On Mac OS X 10.3, RTLD_GLOBAL is now used as the
585 default mode for loading shared libraries in ctypes.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000586
Thomas Hellerb4dc2ef2006-07-13 09:53:47 +0000587- Because of a misspelled preprocessor symbol, ctypes was always
588 compiled without thread support; this is now fixed.

592 sleepycat API allows.
593
Matt Flemingec926502006-07-28 11:27:27 +0000594- Bug #1526460: Fix socketmodule compile on NetBSD as it has a different

603
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +0000604- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
605 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when
606 run via ``regrtest.py``. Now they do.

620 set to the directory that contains the script instead of the user home
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +0000621 directory. That latter was an implementation accident and not what users

Neil Schemenauer6ec6ab02006-07-09 21:19:29 +0000633- Bug #1441486: The literal representation of -(sys.maxint - 1)
634 again evaluates to a int object, not a long.
635
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +0000636- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned
637 using augmented assignment is now correctly determined.
638
Martin v. Löwisd5cfa542006-07-03 13:47:40 +0000639- Bug #927248: Recursive method-wrapper objects can now safely

644
Hye-Shik Change6a1cb92006-06-23 21:16:18 +0000645- Bug #1511381: codec_getstreamcodec() in codec.c is corrected to
646 omit a default "error" argument for NULL pointer. This allows
647 the parser to take a codec from cjkcodecs again.
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000648
Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +0000649- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
650
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +0000651- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
652 now ints rather than longs.
653
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +0000654- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
655 started after line 256.
656
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000657- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
658 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
659 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
660 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
661 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
662 an extension.

679
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +0000680- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,

682 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
683
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +0000684- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

701
Fred Drake10497c82006-06-29 02:57:48 +0000702- Bug #1504333: Make sgmllib support angle brackets in quoted

709
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +0000710- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
711 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
712 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
713
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000714- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

721
Gerhard Häring762fbd32006-07-02 17:48:30 +0000722- The sqlite3 module did cut off data from the SQLite database at the first
723 null character before sending it to a custom converter. This has been fixed
724 now.
725
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +0000726Extension Modules
727-----------------
728
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000729- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
730 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
731 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +0000732
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +0000733- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
734 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
735
736- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
737 on non-Windows platforms.
738
739- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
740 integer or long, without range checking.
741
742- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
743 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
744 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
745
746- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
747 with the --without-threads option.
748
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +0000749- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write
750 access, again.
751
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +0000752- Bug #1512695: cPickle.loads could crash if it was interrupted with

754
Neal Norwitza12aa882006-07-06 06:45:08 +0000755- Bug #1296433: parsing XML with a non-default encoding and

764
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000765- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +0000766 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
767 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
768
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +0000769- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR
770 with spaces in it.
771
Martin v. Löwis88ef6372006-07-06 06:55:58 +0000772- Bug #1517388: sqlite3.dll is now installed on Windows independent
773 of Tcl/Tk.
774
Neal Norwitzc315a0f2006-06-27 04:28:56 +0000775- Bug #1513032: 'make install' failed on FreeBSD 5.3 due to lib-old

801-----------------
802
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +0000803- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
804 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
805 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
806
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +0000807- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
808 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
809
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +0000810- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
811
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000812- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +0000813 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000814
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +0000815- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
816 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
817 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
818 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
819 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
820
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +0000821- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
822 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
823
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +0000824- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
825 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
826 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
827 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
828 requested.
829
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +0000830- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
831 away like they were in Python 2.4.
832
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +0000833- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
834 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
835 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
836
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +0000837- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
838 Unicode 4.1.
839
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +0000840- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
841 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
842 fewer open calls on startup.
843
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +0000844- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
845 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
846 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
847 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
848 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
849
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +0000850- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
851 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
852 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
853 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
854
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +0000855- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
856
857- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
858 "base" parameter.
859
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +0000860- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
861 objects.
862
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +0000863- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
864 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
865 C library function.
866
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +0000867- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
868
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +0000869- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
870
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +0000871- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
872 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
873 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
874 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
875
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +0000876- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
877
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +0000878- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
879
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +0000880- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
881 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
882 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
883 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
884
885- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
886 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
887 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
888 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

895- Patch #1462338: Upgrade pyexpat to expat 2.0.0
896
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +0000897- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char
898 buffer and actually follow its documentation.
899

903 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
904 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
905 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.

918 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
919
920- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
921 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
922
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +0000923- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows

925 Windows platforms).
926
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +0000927- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that
928 may deadlock.
929
Gregory P. Smith0459e4d2006-06-05 02:02:25 +0000930- bsddb: added the DB_ARCH_REMOVE flag and fixed db.DBEnv.log_archive() to
931 accept it without potentially using an uninitialized pointer.
932
933- bsddb: added support for the DBEnv.log_stat() and DBEnv.lsn_reset() methods
934 assuming BerkeleyDB >= 4.0 and 4.4 respectively. [pybsddb project SF

941 parameter is supplied. [SF pybsddb bug #1477863]
942
Gregory P. Smith3c228b12006-06-05 23:59:37 +0000943- bsddb: the __len__ method of a DB object has been fixed to return correct
944 results. It could previously incorrectly return 0 in some cases.
945 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
946
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +0000947- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and
948 aborts the db transaction safely when a modifier callback fails.

987 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
988 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
989 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
990 of the matching pair.

1010 for lookup.
1011
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001012- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1013 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1014 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1015 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1016 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.

1037
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001038- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and

1090
1091*Release date: 27-APR-2006*
1092
1093Core and builtins
1094-----------------
1095
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001096- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1097 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1098
1099 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1100 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1101 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne
1102 PyRun_SimpleFile PyRun_SimpleFileEx PyRun_SimpleString
1103 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1104
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001105- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1106
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001107- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1108 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1109 multiple times.
1110
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001111- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1112 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1113 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1114
1115- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1116 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1117
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001118- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1119 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1120 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001121 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001122 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001123
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001124 def __hash__(self):
1125 return id(self) # WRONG
1126
1127 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1128 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001129 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001130 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1131 necessarily so.
1132
1133- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001134 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001135 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001136 #1454844)
1137
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001138- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1139 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1140 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1141 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1142 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001143
Anthony Baxter51bcb682006-04-05 14:51:42 +00001144Extension Modules

1149
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00001150- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()

1156 the cachesize parameter.
1157
1158- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1159 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
1160
1161- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
1162 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +00001163
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +00001164- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special

1172 abusing errno.
1173
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00001174- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes

1176 or exception is ignored).
1177
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +00001178- Fixed contextlib.nested to cope with exceptions being raised and
1179 caught inside exit handlers.
1180
Greg Wardab05edc2006-04-23 03:47:58 +00001181- Updated optparse module to Optik 1.5.1 (allow numeric constants in
1182 hex, octal, or binary; add ``append_const`` action; keep going if
1183 gettext cannot be imported; added ``OptionParser.destroy()`` method;
1184 added ``epilog`` for better help generation).
1185
Tim Peters21fbd572006-04-21 21:18:10 +00001186- Bug #1473760: ``tempfile.TemporaryFile()`` could hang on Windows, when
1187 called from a thread spawned as a side effect of importing a module.
1188
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001189- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
1190 .zip or .egg files.
1191
1192- The pkgutil module now has several new utility functions, such
1193 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either
1194 in the filesystem or zip files.
1195
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001196- The mailbox module can now modify and delete messages from
1197 mailboxes, in addition to simply reading them. Thanks to Gregory
1198 K. Johnson for writing the code, and to the 2005 Google Summer of
1199 Code for funding his work.
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001200

1238 --with-cxx-main. Link with C++ compiler only if --with-cxx-main was
Andrew M. Kuchlingdb4018f2006-04-14 14:54:18 +00001239 specified. (Can be overridden by explicitly setting LINKCC.) Decouple
Martin v. Löwis0f48d982006-04-14 14:34:26 +00001240 CXX from --with-cxx-main, see description in README.
1241

1245
Tim Peters8931ff12006-05-13 23:28:20 +00001246- ``PyString_FromFormat``, ``PyErr_Format``, and ``PyString_FromFormatV``
1247 now accept formats "%u" for unsigned ints, "%lu" for unsigned longs,
1248 and "%zu" for unsigned integers of type ``size_t``.

1255
Nick Coghlan27ec1a72006-04-24 04:32:47 +00001256- test_cmd_line now checks operation of the -m and -c command switches
1257
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001258- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1259 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1260 the current Decimal context.
1261
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001262- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1263 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1264 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1265 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

1292-----------------
1293
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001294- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1295 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1296
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001297- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1298 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1299 end in .PYD.
1300
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001301- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1302 sys.stdout.encoding.
1303
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001304- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1305
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001306- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1307
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001308- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1309
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001310- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1311 5.4 and later versions.
1312
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001313- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1314 now gives a SyntaxError.
1315
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001316- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1317 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1318 (closes patch #1170323).
1319
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001320- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1321 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1322 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1323 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1324 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1325 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1326 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001327 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1328 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001329 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1330 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1331
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001332- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1333 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1334 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1335
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001336- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1337 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1338 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1339 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1340
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001341- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1342
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001343- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1344 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1345 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1346 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1347
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001348- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1349 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1350 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1351 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1352 absolute_import' is used.
1353
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001354- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1355 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1356 exceptions.
1357
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001358- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001359 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1360
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001361- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001362
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001363- Patch 1433928:
1364 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1365 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1366 KeyError.
1367
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001368- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1369 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1370 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001371 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001372 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1373 - The built-in file type.
1374 - The thread.LockType type.
1375 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1376 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1377 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001378
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001379- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1380 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1381
1382 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1383 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1384
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001385- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1386
1387- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1388 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1389 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1390 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1391 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001392
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001393- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1394 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1395 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1396
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001397- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1398 configure would break checking curses.h.
1399
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001400- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1401 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1402
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001403- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
1404
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00001405- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
1406
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001407- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1408
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001409- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1410 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1411
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001412- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001414 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1415
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001416- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1417 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001418 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.

1424
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001425- Bug #1281408: Py_BuildValue now works correctly even with unsigned longs
Georg Brandlf06e30a2005-11-24 15:37:42 +00001426 and long longs.
1427
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001428- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001429 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001430 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001431
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001432- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1433 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1434 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1435 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1436 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1437
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001438- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001439

1457
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001458- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001459 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1460 was empty.
1461
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001462- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
1463 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
1464
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001465- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is
Walter Dörwald6611a8b2005-10-09 19:28:35 +00001466 present).
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001467

1485
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001486- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1487 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1488 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1489

Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00001492- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
1493 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1494
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001495- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1496 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1497 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001498 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001499 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1500 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1501 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1502 realloc.

1508 like their int counterparts.
1509
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001510- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1511 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1512 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see

1515
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001516- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1517 serializing floats.
1518
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001519- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1520 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1521 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1522
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001523- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1524 278.
1525
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001526- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1527 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1528 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1529 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001530 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001531 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001532 Thanks Walter Drwald.

Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001534- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1535 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1536 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1537 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1538
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001539- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1540 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1541 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1542 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1543 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1544
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001545- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads

1558 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package

1597 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
1598 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
1599 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
1600 the same thread id).

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00001811 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001812 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00001813 module will not be built.

1838
Barry Warsaw4d90bbd2006-03-22 02:45:50 +00001839- email 4.0 package now integrated. This is largely the same as the email 3.0
1840 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
1841 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
1842 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
1843 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
1844 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
1845 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

1851 as C functions PyCodec_IncrementalEncoder() and PyCodec_IncrementalDecoder()
1852 have been added.

2119
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002120- Enhancements to the csv module:
2121
2122 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002123 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002124 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002125 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2126 reporting.
2127 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2128 dictates.
2129 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002130 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002131 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002132 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2133 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002134 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2135 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002136 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002137 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2138 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2139 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2140 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2141 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2142 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2143 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2144 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2145 without first creating a dialect class.
2146 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2147 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2148 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002149 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002150 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2151 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002152 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2153 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2154 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2155 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002156 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2157 This has been fixed.
2158
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002159- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2160 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2161 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2162 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2163
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002164- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2165

2167 (Bug #951915).
2168
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002169- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2170 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2171 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002172 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002173
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00002174- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
2175
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00002176- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
2177 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
2178
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00002179- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.
2180

2186
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00002187- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
2188
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002189- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2190 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2191 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2192
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002193- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002194 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002195
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002196- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
2197 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
2198 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2199
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002200- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
2201 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
2202 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00002203
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00002204- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The

2208 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
2209

2211 correctly.
2212
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002213- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2214 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2215 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2216 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2217 between two lines.
2218
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002219- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2220 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2221 handlers.
2222
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002223- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002224 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2225 encoding instead of a unicode string.
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002226
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00002227- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than

Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002240 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2241 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2242 special classes that use unicode.

Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002280- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
2281 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
2282
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002283- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2284 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2285 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2286 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2287 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2288 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2289 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2290 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2291
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002292- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2293 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2294 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
2295 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

2298-----
2299
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002300- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2301 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2302 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2303 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2304 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2305 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2306 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2307 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2308 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2309 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2310
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002311- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.

Walter Dörwaldd1c1e102005-10-06 20:29:57 +00002315- Patch #1313939: PyUnicode_DecodeCharmap() accepts a unicode string as the
2316 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
2317 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
2318 mappings.
