344Core and builtins
345-----------------
346
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000347- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000348 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
349 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000350
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000351 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
352 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
353 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
354 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
355 exception, logged, etc.
356
357 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
358 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000359
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000360- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
361
362- Fix bug related to __len__ functions using values > 2**32 on 64-bit machines
363 with new-style classes.
364
365- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
366 classic classes.
367
368- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
369 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
370 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
371 to effectively use __index__.
372
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +0000373- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
374 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
375
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +0000376- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.
377
Georg Brandl7e3ba2a2006-08-06 08:23:54 +0000378- Bug #1535165: fixed a segfault in input() and raw_input() when
379 sys.stdin is closed.
380
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +0000381- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
382 the Python dll again.
383
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000384- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
385 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
386 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
387 will be regenerated.
388
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +0000389- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
390 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
391 immediately popped off the stack.
392
Georg Brandle9462c72006-08-04 18:03:37 +0000393- Fixed a reference-counting problem in property().

Neil Schemenauer4c6b0d52006-08-16 23:38:05 +0000399- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
400 generated for generator expressions.
401
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +0000402- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
403 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
404 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
405 to be maintained manually as static string literal.
406
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000407- If the Python part of a ctypes callback function returns None,
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000408 and this cannot be converted to the required C type, an exception is
409 printed with PyErr_WriteUnraisable. Before this change, the C
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000410 callback returned arbitrary values to the calling code.
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000411
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000412- The __repr__ method of a NULL ctypes.py_object() no longer raises
Thomas Hellerb0aa98f2006-08-16 14:07:44 +0000413 an exception.
414
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000415- uuid.UUID now has a bytes_le attribute. This returns the UUID in
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000416 little-endian byte order for Windows. In addition, uuid.py gained some
Anthony Baxter58179592006-08-16 13:08:25 +0000417 workarounds for clocks with low resolution, to stop the code yielding
418 duplicate UUIDs.
419
Kurt B. Kaiserd112bc72006-08-16 05:01:42 +0000420- Patch #1540892: site.py Quitter() class attempts to close sys.stdin
421 before raising SystemExit, allowing IDLE to honor quit() and exit().
422
Neal Norwitzbf8c1952006-08-15 04:14:57 +0000423- Bug #1224621: make tabnanny recognize IndentationErrors raised by tokenize.
424
Georg Brandl7a1af772006-08-14 21:55:28 +0000425- Patch #1536071: trace.py should now find the full module name of a
426 file correctly even on Windows.
427
Georg Brandl0a7d1bb2006-08-11 07:26:10 +0000428- logging's atexit hook now runs even if the rest of the module has
429 already been cleaned up.
430
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000431- Bug #1112549, fix DoS attack on cgi.FieldStorage.
Guido van Rossum133f4e42006-08-10 17:42:50 +0000432
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000433- Bug #1531405, format_exception no longer raises an exception if
434 str(exception) raised an exception.
435
Neil Schemenauer06ded092006-08-04 16:20:30 +0000436- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
437 generated for nested functions.

447
Thomas Heller1ce433e2006-08-14 16:20:04 +0000448- Patch # 1536908: enable building ctypes on OpenBSD/AMD64. The

450
Thomas Heller86720042006-08-14 11:17:48 +0000451- Patch #1532975 was applied, which fixes Bug #1533481: ctypes now
452 uses the _as_parameter_ attribute when objects are passed to foreign
453 function calls. The ctypes version number was changed to 1.0.1.
454
Bob Ippolitoe6c9f982006-08-04 23:59:21 +0000455- Bug #1530559, struct.pack raises TypeError where it used to convert.

512
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +0000513- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
514
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +0000515- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
516 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().

518
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +0000519- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
520 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
521
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000522- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
523 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
524 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
525 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
526
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000527- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
528 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
529 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
530 the code to make that compiler happy again.
531

546
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000547- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000548 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000549 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.

564
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000565- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or

573
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000574- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000575 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,

582 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
583 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
584 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``

586
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000587- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

606
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000607- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
608 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
609 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
610 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
611 tuple pre-2.4.
612
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000613- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
614
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000615- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
616 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
617 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
618 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
619 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
620 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
621 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
622 charset and language parts).
623
624 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
625 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
626

633 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
634 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
635 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

736
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000737- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
738 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
739 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
740 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension

793
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000794- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

819- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
820 integer or long, without range checking.
821
822- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes

886
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +0000887- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned

896 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
897 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the

905 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
906 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
907 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
908 requested.
909
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +0000910- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
911 away like they were in Python 2.4.
912
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +0000913- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
914 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
915 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
916
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +0000917- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
918 Unicode 4.1.
919
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +0000920- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
921 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
922 fewer open calls on startup.
923
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +0000924- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
925 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
926 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
927 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
928 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
929
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +0000930- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
931 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
932 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
933 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
934
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +0000935- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
936
937- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
938 "base" parameter.
939
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +0000940- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
941 objects.
942
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +0000943- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
944 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
945 C library function.
946
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +0000947- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
948
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +0000949- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
950
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +0000951- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
952 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
953 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
954 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
955
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +0000956- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
957
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +0000958- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
959
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +0000960- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
961 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
962 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
963 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
964
965- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
966 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
967 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
968 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

976
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +0000977- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char
978 buffer and actually follow its documentation.
979

Nick Coghlanc649ec52006-05-29 12:43:05 +0000982- Patch #1478788 (modified version): The functional extension module has
983 been renamed to _functools and a functools Python wrapper module added.
984 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
985 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.
986

998 (up to the system limit of 32K characters).
999
1000- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
1001 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
1002
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +00001003- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows
1004 ``QueryPerformanceCounter()`` now (as was already the case on 32-bit
1005 Windows platforms).
1006
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001007- Calling Tk_Init twice is refused if the first call failed as that
1008 may deadlock.
1009
Gregory P. Smith0459e4d2006-06-05 02:02:25 +00001010- bsddb: added the DB_ARCH_REMOVE flag and fixed db.DBEnv.log_archive() to
1011 accept it without potentially using an uninitialized pointer.
1012
1013- bsddb: added support for the DBEnv.log_stat() and DBEnv.lsn_reset() methods
1014 assuming BerkeleyDB >= 4.0 and 4.4 respectively. [pybsddb project SF

1022
Gregory P. Smith3c228b12006-06-05 23:59:37 +00001023- bsddb: the __len__ method of a DB object has been fixed to return correct
1024 results. It could previously incorrectly return 0 in some cases.
1025 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
1026
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +00001027- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and
1028 aborts the db transaction safely when a modifier callback fails.
1029 Fixes SF python patch/bug #1408584.
1030
Gregory P. Smith506f7b52006-06-15 08:52:32 +00001031- bsddb: multithreaded DB access using the simple bsddb module interface

1065
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +00001066- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
1067 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1068 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1069 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1070 of the matching pair.
1071
Greg Ward0e0c9f42006-06-11 16:24:11 +00001072- Bug #1498146: fix optparse to handle Unicode strings in option help,

1079
Andrew M. Kuchling0873b112006-06-09 16:46:51 +00001080- The wsgiref package has been added to the standard library.
1081
Nick Coghlan676725d2006-06-08 13:54:49 +00001082- The functions update_wrapper() and wraps() have been added to the functools
1083 module. These make it easier to copy relevant metadata from the original
1084 function when writing wrapper functions.
1085

Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00001089- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
1090 for lookup.
1091
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001092- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1093 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1094 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1095 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1096 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.
1097
Georg Brandlfd9a4b12006-05-29 20:57:01 +00001098- Patch #1497027: try HTTP digest auth before basic auth in urllib2

1116 tarfiles.
1117
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001118- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and
1119 stdout arguments, making it possible to redirect input and output
1120 for remote debugging.
1121

1173Core and builtins
1174-----------------
1175
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001176- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1177 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1178
1179 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1180 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1181 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne
1182 PyRun_SimpleFile PyRun_SimpleFileEx PyRun_SimpleString
1183 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1184
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001185- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1186
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001187- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1188 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1189 multiple times.
1190
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001191- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1192 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1193 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1194
1195- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1196 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1197
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001198- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1199 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1200 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001201 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001202 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001203
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001204 def __hash__(self):
1205 return id(self) # WRONG
1206
1207 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1208 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001209 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001210 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1211 necessarily so.

1213- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001214 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,

1219 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1220 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1221 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1222 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)

1337
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001338- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1339 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1340 the current Decimal context.
1341
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001342- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1343 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1344 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1345 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001371Core and builtins
1372-----------------
1373
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001374- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1375 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1376
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001377- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1378 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1379 end in .PYD.
1380
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001381- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1382 sys.stdout.encoding.
1383
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001384- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1385
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001386- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1387
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001388- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1389
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001390- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1391 5.4 and later versions.
1392
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001393- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1394 now gives a SyntaxError.
1395
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001396- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1397 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1398 (closes patch #1170323).
1399
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001400- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1401 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1402 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1403 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1404 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1405 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1406 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001407 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1408 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001409 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1410 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1411
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001412- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1413 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1414 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1415
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001416- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1417 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1418 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1419 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1420
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001421- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1422
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001423- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1424 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1425 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1426 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1427
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001428- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1429 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1430 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1431 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1432 absolute_import' is used.
1433
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001434- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1435 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1436 exceptions.
1437
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001438- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001439 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1440
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001441- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001442
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001443- Patch 1433928:
1444 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1445 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1446 KeyError.
1447
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001448- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1449 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1450 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001451 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001452 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1453 - The built-in file type.
1454 - The thread.LockType type.
1455 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1456 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1457 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001458
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001459- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1460 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1461
1462 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1463 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1464
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001465- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1466
1467- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1468 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1469 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1470 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1471 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001472
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001473- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1474 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1475 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1476
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001477- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1478 configure would break checking curses.h.
1479
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001480- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1481 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1482
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001483- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
1484
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00001485- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
1486
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001487- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1488
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001489- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1490 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1491
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001492- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001494 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1495
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001496- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1497 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001498 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.

Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001511
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001512- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1513 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1514 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1515 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1516 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1517
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001518- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

1537
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001538- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001539 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1540 was empty.
1541
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001542- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
1543 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
1544
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001545- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is

1562
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00001563- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
1564 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
1565
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001566- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1567 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1568 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1569
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001570- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1571
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00001572- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
1573 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1574
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001575- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1576 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1577 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001578 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001579 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1580 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1581 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1582 realloc.
1583
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001584- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when

1586
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001587- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1588 like their int counterparts.
1589
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001590- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1591 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1592 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1593 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
1594 for a longer write-up of the problem).
1595
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001596- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1597 serializing floats.
1598
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001599- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1600 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1601 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1602
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001603- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1604 278.
1605
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001606- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1607 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1608 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1609 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001610 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001611 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001612 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001613
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001614- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1615 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1616 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1617 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1618
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001619- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1620 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1621 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1622 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1623 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1624
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001625- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1626 disabled caused a crash.
1627
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001628- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1629 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1630
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001631- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this
Anthony Baxter12b6f6c2005-03-29 13:36:16 +00001632 fixes the crash seen in bug #1165761
1633
Raymond Hettinger96229b12005-03-11 06:49:40 +00001634- Added two new builtins, any() and all().
1635
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001636- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00001637 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
1638 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
1639 (thanks to logistix for that added support).

1653
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001654- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00001655 an ferror() call.
1656
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00001657- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in

1662
Raymond Hettingera422c342005-01-11 03:03:27 +00001663- set and frozenset objects can now be marshalled. SF #1098985.
1664
Michael W. Hudsonfaa76482005-01-31 17:09:25 +00001665- Bug #1077106: Poor argument checking could cause memory corruption

Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00001667
Jeremy Hyltonab630502005-02-04 18:44:06 +00001668- The parser did not complain about future statements in illegal
1669 positions. It once again reports a syntax error if a future
1670 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
1671
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00001672- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a
1673 unicode instance if the argument is not an instance of basestring and
1674 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
1675
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00001676- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
1677 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
1678 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
1679 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
1680 the same thread id).

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00001891 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001892 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00001893 module will not be built.

1918
Barry Warsaw4d90bbd2006-03-22 02:45:50 +00001919- email 4.0 package now integrated. This is largely the same as the email 3.0
1920 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
1921 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
1922 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
1923 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
1924 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
1925 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

2016 "The consensus of researchers in this area (at least as
2017 expressed at the NIST Hash Function Workshop 10/31/05),
2018 is that SHA-256 is a good choice for the time being, but
2019 that research should continue, and other alternatives may
2020 arise from this research. The larger SHA's also seem OK."

2199
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002200- Enhancements to the csv module:
2201
2202 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002203 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002204 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002205 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2206 reporting.
2207 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2208 dictates.
2209 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002210 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002211 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002212 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2213 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002214 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2215 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002216 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002217 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2218 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2219 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2220 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2221 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2222 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2223 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2224 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2225 without first creating a dialect class.
2226 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2227 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2228 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002229 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002230 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2231 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002232 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2233 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2234 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2235 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002236 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2237 This has been fixed.
2238
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002239- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2240 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2241 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2242 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2243
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002244- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2245
Raymond Hettinger6065d322004-12-20 23:51:53 +00002246- StringIO.truncate() now correctly adjusts the size attribute.
2247 (Bug #951915).
2248
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002249- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2250 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2251 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002252 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002253
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00002254- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
2255
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00002256- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
2257 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
2258
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00002259- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.
2260
Raymond Hettinger3489cad2004-12-05 05:20:42 +00002261- the pickle module no longer uses the deprecated bin parameter.
2262

2264
Raymond Hettinger6c92d762004-12-05 03:28:00 +00002265- the pstats module no longer uses the deprecated ignore() method.
2266
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00002267- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
2268
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002269- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2270 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2271 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2272
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002273- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002274 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002275
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002276- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
2277 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
2278 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2279
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002280- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
2281 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
2282 ``.decompress()`` calls.

Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00002284- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The
2285 reconvert module now has some simple documentation.
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002286
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00002287- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
2288 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
2289
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002290- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
2291 correctly.
2292
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002293- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2294 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2295 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2296 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2297 between two lines.
2298
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002299- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2300 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2301 handlers.
2302
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002303- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002304 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2305 encoding instead of a unicode string.
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002306
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00002307- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than
2308 considering it exactly like a '*'.
2309
Walter Dörwald007f8df2005-10-09 19:42:27 +00002310- Bug #1245379: Add "unicode-1-1-utf-7" as an alias for "utf-7" to
2311 ``encodings.aliases``.
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00002312
Walter Dörwald09f0dd52005-11-21 19:10:07 +00002313- ` uu.encode()`` and ``uu.decode()`` now support unicode filenames.
2314
Gustavo Niemeyer548148812006-01-31 18:34:13 +00002315- Patch #1413711: Certain patterns of differences were making difflib
2316 touch the recursion limit.
2317
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002318- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
2319 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002320 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2321 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2322 special classes that use unicode.

2337
Martin v. Löwis64c33dd2006-01-03 07:42:14 +00002338- The sources of zlib are now part of the Python distribution (zlib 1.2.3).
2339 The zlib module is now builtin on Windows.
2340
Martin v. Löwisd5845ec2005-12-30 12:31:38 +00002341- Use -xcode=pic32 for CCSHARED on Solaris with SunPro.
2342

2344 value of LINKCC if python was built with GCC 4.0.
2345
Trent Mick8321b422005-07-26 02:29:21 +00002346- Upgrade Windows build to zlib 1.2.3 which eliminates a potential security
2347 vulnerability in zlib 1.2.1 and 1.2.2.
2348
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00002349- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
2350 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
2351 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00002352 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00002353
Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00002354- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
2355 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
2356 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.
2357
Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00002358- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
2359
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002360- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
2361 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
2362
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002363- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2364 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2365 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2366 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2367 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2368 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2369 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2370 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2371
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002372- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2373 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2374 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
2375 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.
2376
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002377C API
2378-----
2379
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002380- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2381 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2382 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2383 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2384 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2385 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2386 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2387 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2388 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2389 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2390
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002391- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
2392
Raymond Hettinger66517482004-12-03 11:45:13 +00002393- Removed PyRange_New().
2394
Walter Dörwaldd1c1e102005-10-06 20:29:57 +00002395- Patch #1313939: PyUnicode_DecodeCharmap() accepts a unicode string as the
2396 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
2397 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
2398 mappings.
