Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd78b9dc2008-10-07 20:32:10 +000015- Issue #4069: When set.remove(element) is used with a set element, the element
16 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
17 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
18 it correctly refers to the initial element.

117-----------------
118
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000119- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
120
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000121- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
122 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
123 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
124 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
125 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
126 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
127 64bit values.
128
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000129- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
130 error.
131
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000132- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
133 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
134 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
135 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
136
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000137- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
138 a unicode argument.
139
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +0000140- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
141
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000142- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000143 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000144 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
145
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000146- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000147 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
148 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
149 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
150 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
151 type object.
152
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000153- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
154
155- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
156
157- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
158
159- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
160
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000161- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
162 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
163
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000164- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
165 ``__delslice__``.
166
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000167- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
168 library targets in the Makefile.
169
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +0000170- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
171 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
172 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
173

188
Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +0000189- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
190 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
191 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000291
292Core and Builtins
293-----------------
294
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000295- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
296 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
297 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
298 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
299 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
300 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
301 default.
302
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000303- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
304 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
305
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000306- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
307 value again.
308
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000309- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
310 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
311 and introducing s*.
312
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000313- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
314 object was stored in the freelist.
315
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000316- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
317 ValueError consistently across platforms.
318
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000319- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
320 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
321 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
322

327
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000328- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on

330
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000331- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
332 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
333 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
334
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000335- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
336 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
337 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
338 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
339 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
340 failed have been fixed.

349
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000350- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
351 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
352 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
353
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000354- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
355 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
356 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
357 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in

485
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000486Core and Builtins
487-----------------
488
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000489- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
490 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
491 an integer using operator.index().
492
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000493- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
494 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
495
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000496- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
497 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
498
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000499- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
500 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
501 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
502
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000503- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
504 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
505 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
506 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
507 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
508 level.
509
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000510- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
511 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
512 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
513 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
514 all imports from that module to fail.
515
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000516- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
517 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
518 new-style classes.
519
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000520- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
521 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
522 another file in sys.stdout.
523
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000524- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
525 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
526 another thread's dictionary.
527
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000528- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
529 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
530 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
531 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
532 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
533 10, -1).
534
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000535- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
536 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
537 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000538
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000539- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
540 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
541 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().

548 error when they failed.
549
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000550- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

560
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000561- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X

Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000574
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000575- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
576 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000577 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000578 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
579 merged into trunk.
580
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000581- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000592 when completed.
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +0000593
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000594- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
595 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
596
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000597- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001119- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1120 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1121 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1122 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1123 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1124 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1125 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1126 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1127 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1128 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1129 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1130 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1131 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1132 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1133 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1134 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1135 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1136 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1137 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1138 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1139
1140 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1141 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1142 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1143 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1144 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1145 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1146 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1147 access to the underlying socket used.
1148
1149 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1150 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1151 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001152
1153 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:

1157

1447 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1448 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1449 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1450 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1451 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1452

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001692- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1693 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1694 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1695 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are

Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001697 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
