Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +00007What's New in Python 2.6 beta 3?
8================================
9
10*Release date: XX-Aug-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +000015- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
16 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
17
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +000018- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
19 value again.
20
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +000021- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
22 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
23 and introducing s*.
24
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +000025- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
26 object was stored in the freelist.
27
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +000028- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
29 ValueError consistently across platforms.
30
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +000031- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
32 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
33 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
34
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +000035- Apply security patches from Apple.
36
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +000037- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
38 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
39
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000040- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
41 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
42
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000043- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
44 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
45 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
46
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000047- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
48 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
49 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
50 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
51 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
52 failed have been fixed.
53
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000054Library
55-------
56
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +000057- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
58 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
59 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
60
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +000061- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
62 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
63 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
64 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
65 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
66 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
67
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +000068- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
69 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
70
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +000071- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
72
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +000073- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
74
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +000075- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
76
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +000077- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
78 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
79
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +000080- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
81 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
82
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +000083- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
84 in a redirect.
85
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +000086- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +000087 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +000088
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +000089- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
90 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
91
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +000092- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
93 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
94 regular expression.
95
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +000096- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
97 thread-safe.
98
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +000099- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
100 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
101 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
102
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000103- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
104
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000105- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
106 menu entries were not deleted.
107
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000108- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
109 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
110
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000111- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
112 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
113
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000114- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
115 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
116 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
117
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000118- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
119 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
120 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
121
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000122- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
123 the reload() built-in has been removed.
124
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000125- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000126 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000127 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,
128 filecmp, fileinput, inspect, logging, modulefinder, pdb, pickle, profile,
129 pstats, pydoc, re, rlcompleter, SimpleXMLRPCServer, shelve, socket,
130 subprocess, sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter, test.test_support, textwrap,
131 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000132
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000133- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
134 raised an AttributeError.
135
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000136- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000137 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
138 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000139
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +0000140- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
141 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
142
Skip Montanarof9ac43f2008-07-27 00:50:41 +0000143- Issue 3437: Bug fix in robotparser parsing of Allow: lines.
144
Raymond Hettinger8c664e82008-07-25 18:43:33 +0000145- Issue 1592: Improve error reporting when operations are attempted
146 on a closed shelf.
147
Georg Brandlf9efabb2008-07-23 15:16:45 +0000148- Deprecate the "ast" parser function aliases.
149
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000150- Issue #3120: On 64-bit Windows the subprocess module was truncating handles.
151
152- Issue #3303: Fix a crash in locale.strcoll() when calling it with
153 invalid arguments.
154
155- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
156 with None arguments.
157
158- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
159 configuration files.
160
161- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
162
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000163- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
164 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
165 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
166
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000167- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword
168 argument in python 2.5, this broke code that subclassed Popen to include its
169 own poll method. Fixed my moving _deadstate to an _internal_poll method.
170
Martin v. Löwis8dbf3642008-08-01 14:10:26 +0000171Build

174- Generate the PatternGrammar pickle during "make install".
175
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000176Documentation
177-------------
178
Nick Coghlan6e8fef02008-08-18 13:14:22 +0000179- Issue #2235: the C API function PyObject_HashNotImplemented and its
180 interaction with the tp_hash slot (added in 2.6b2) are now documented
181
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000182- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
183 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
184 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
185 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000191*Release date: 17-Jul-2008*
192
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000193Core and Builtins
194-----------------
195
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000196- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
197 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
198 an integer using operator.index().
199
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000200- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
201 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
202
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000203- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
204 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
205
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000206- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
207 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
208 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
209
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000210- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
211 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
212 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
213 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
214 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
215 level.
216
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000217- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
218 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
219 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
220 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
221 all imports from that module to fail.
222
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000223- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
224 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
225 new-style classes.
226
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000227- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
228 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
229 another file in sys.stdout.
230
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000231- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
232 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
233 another thread's dictionary.
234
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000235- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
236 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
237 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
238 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
239 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
240 10, -1).
241
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000242- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
243 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
244 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000245
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000246- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
247 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
248 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000249
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000250Library
251-------
252
Thomas Heller57adf222008-08-14 19:10:48 +0000253- Issue #3554: ctypes.string_at and ctypes.wstring_at did call Python
254 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
255 error when they failed.
256
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000257- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.
258
Jesse Noller7fb96402008-07-17 21:01:05 +0000259- Issue #3395: fix reference in test_multiprocessing to old debugInfo method
260
Georg Brandla24869a2008-07-16 22:33:18 +0000261- Issue #3312: Fix two crashes in sqlite3.

264
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000265- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
266 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
267
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000268- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000269
Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000270- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
271 a valid dlerror() message.
272
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000273- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
274 incomplete structure was created.
275
Brett Cannon3d0b9f02008-07-13 01:15:07 +0000276- Issue #3339: dummy_thread.acquire() should not return None.
277
Raymond Hettingerb01713e2008-07-10 14:34:57 +0000278- Issue #3285: Fractions from_float() and from_decimal() accept Integral arguments.
279
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000280- Issue #3301: Bisect module behaved badly when lo was negative.
Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000281
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000282- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
283 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000284 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000285 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
286 merged into trunk.
287
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000288- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().
289

291
292- Issue #1526: Allow more than 64k files to be added to Zip64 file.
293
294- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
295 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000296 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
Martin v. Löwis8c436412008-07-03 12:51:14 +0000297
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000298- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000299 when completed.
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +0000300
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000301- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
302 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
303
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000304- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000754- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
755 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
756 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
757 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

759 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
760 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000823
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000824- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
825 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
826 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
827 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
828 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
829 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
830 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
831 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
832 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
833 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
834 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
835 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
836 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
837 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
838 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
839 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
840 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
841 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
842 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
843 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
844
845 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
846 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
847 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
848 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
849 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
850 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
851 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
852 access to the underlying socket used.
853
854 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
855 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
856 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000857
858 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000859 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

861 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
862
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000863 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
864 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001143- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1144 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1145 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1146 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1147 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1148 module is:
1149 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1150
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001151- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1152 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1153 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1154 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1155 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1156 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1157
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001158- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1159 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1160 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1161 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1162 PyObject_Format().
1163
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001164- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1165 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1166 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001167
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001168- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001169 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access
1170 a slot on a registered virtual subclass.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +00001171

1176 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1177 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001178
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001179- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1180 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1181 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001182
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001183- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
1184 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
1185
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001186- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256
1187 entries each.

1214 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1215 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1216 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +00001397- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
1398 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
1399 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
1400 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
1401 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +00001402 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
