Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +00007What's New in Python 2.6 beta 2?
8================================
9
10Core and Builtins
11-----------------
12
Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +000013
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +000014- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
15 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
16 new-style classes.
17
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +000018- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
19 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
20 another file in sys.stdout.
21
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +000022- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
23 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
24 another thread's dictionary.
25
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +000026- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
27 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
28 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
29 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
30 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
31 10, -1).
32
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000033- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments, f(a=2, a=23),
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000034 would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression from 2.4 caused by the
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +000035 switch to the new compiler.
36
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +000037- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with other
38 freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into ClearFreeList apis and
39 calls them via gc.collect().
40
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +000041Library

45
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000046- Issue #3301: Bisect module behaved badly when lo was negative.
Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +000047
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +000048- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
49 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000050 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +000051 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
52 merged into trunk.
53
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +000054- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().
55
Martin v. Löwis8c436412008-07-03 12:51:14 +000056- Issue #1622: Correct interpretation of various ZIP header fields.
57
58- Issue #1526: Allow more than 64k files to be added to Zip64 file.
59
60- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
61 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
62 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
63
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000064- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects
65 when completed.

Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +000067- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
68 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
69
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +000070- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
71 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().
72
Gregory P. Smithf4140642008-07-06 07:16:40 +000073- Issue #2113: Fix error in subprocess.Popen if the select system call is
74 interrupted by a signal.
75
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +000076- Issue #3309: Fix bz2.BZFile iterator to release its internal lock
Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +000077 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
78 Prevents a deadlock.
79

81 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
82 default https port (443).
83
Martin v. Löwisd84fd952008-06-30 06:57:39 +000084Build
85-----

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000505- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
506 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for

585 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
586 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
587 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
588 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
589 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
590 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
591 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
592 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
593 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
594 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
595
596 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
597 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
598 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
599 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
600 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
601 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
602 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
603 access to the underlying socket used.
604
605 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
606 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
607 connect).

Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +0000885 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +0000886
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000887- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
888
889- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000890
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000891- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000892 issue 215555 for a discussion.
893
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000894- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
895 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
896 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
897 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
898 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
899 module is:
900 from future_builtins import hex, oct
901
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000902- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
903 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
904 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
905 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
906 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
907 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
908
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000909- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
910 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
911 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
912 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
913 PyObject_Format().
914
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000915- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
916 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
917 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000918
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000919- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

928 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000929
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000930- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a

965 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
966 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
967 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000968

2572-----
2573
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002574- Unified naming convention for free lists and their limits. All free
2575 lists in Object/ are named ``free_list``, the counter ``numfree``
2576 and the upper limit is a macro ``PyName_MAXFREELIST`` inside an
2577 #ifndef block.
Christian Heimes5b970ad2008-02-06 13:33:44 +00002578
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002579- ``PySet_Add()`` can now modify a newly created frozenset. Similarly
2580 to ``PyTuple_SetItem``, it can be used to populate a brand new
2581 frozenset; but it does not steal a reference to the added item.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002582
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002583- Added ``PySet_Check()`` and ``PyFrozenSet_Check()`` to the set API.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002584
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002585- Backport of PyUnicode_FromString(), _FromStringAndSize(), _Format
2586 and _FormatV from Python 3.0. Made PyLong_AsSsize_t and
2587 PyLong_FromSsize_t public functions.
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002588
2589- Patch #1720595: add T_BOOL to the range of structmember types.
2590
2591- Issue #1534: Added ``PyFloat_GetMax()``, ``PyFloat_GetMin()`` and
2592 ``PyFloat_GetInfo()`` to the float API.
2593
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002594- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t#
2595 of w# format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even
2596 when PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return
2597 incorrect results with huge strings.
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002598
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002599- Issue #1629: Renamed Py_Size, Py_Type and Py_Refcnt to Py_SIZE,
2600 Py_TYPE and Py_REFCNT.
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002601
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002602- PEP 3123: Provide forward compatibility with Python 3.0, while
2603 keeping backwards compatibility. Add Py_Refcnt, Py_Type, Py_Size,
2604 and PyVarObject_HEAD_INIT.
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002605
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002606- Py_ssize_t fields work in structmember when HAVE_LONG_LONG is not
2607 defined.
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002608
2609- Patch #1733960: Allow T_LONGLONG to accept ints.
2610
2611- T_PYSSIZET can now be used in PyMemberDef lists for Py_ssize_t members.
2612
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002613- Added a new API function ``PyImport_ImportModuleNoBlock``.
2614
Georg Brandl6caad7d2008-01-26 14:19:22 +00002615- Bug #1637022: Prefix AST symbols with _Py_.
2616
2617- Fix some leftovers from the conversion from int to Py_ssize_t
2618 (relevant to strings and sequences of more than 2**31 items).
2619
2620- Make _PyGILState_NoteThreadState() static, it was not used anywhere
2621 outside of pystate.c and should not be necessary.
2622
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002623- ``PyImport_Import`` and ``PyImport_ImportModule`` now always do
2624 absolute imports. In earlier versions they might have used relative
2625 imports under some conditions.
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002626
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002627- Added case insensitive comparison methods ``PyOS_stricmp(char*,
2628 char*)`` and ``PyOS_strnicmp(char*, char*, Py_ssize_t)``.
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002629
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002630- Bug #1542693: remove semi-colon at end of PyImport_ImportModuleEx

2638 requires Windows 2000 or greater. The _WINVER and NTDDI_VERSION
2639 macros are set to Win2k for x86/32bit builds and WinXP for AMD64
2640 builds.
Christian Heimes95d64472008-02-09 19:55:22 +00002641

2654
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00002655- Removed the macfs module. It had been deprecated since Python 2.5.
2656 This lead to the deprecation of macostools.touched() as it relied
2657 solely on macfs and was a no-op under OS X.
