8================================
9
10*Release date: XX-Aug-2008*
11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +000015- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
16 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
17 and introducing s*.
18
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +000019- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
20 object was stored in the freelist.
21
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +000022- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
23 ValueError consistently across platforms.
24
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +000025- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
26 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
27 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
28
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +000029- Apply security patches from Apple.
30
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +000031- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
32 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
33
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000034- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
35 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
36
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000037- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
38 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
39 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
40
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000041- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
42 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
43 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
44 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
45 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
46 failed have been fixed.
47
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +000048Library
49-------
50
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +000051- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
52 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
53 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
54 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
55 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
56 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
57
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +000058- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
59 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
60
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +000061- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
62
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +000063- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
64
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +000065- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
66
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +000067- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
68 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
69
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +000070- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
71 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
72
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +000073- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
74 in a redirect.
75
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +000076- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +000077 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +000078
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +000079- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
80 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
81
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +000082- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
83 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
84 regular expression.
85
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +000086- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
87 thread-safe.
88
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +000089- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
90 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
91 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
92
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +000093- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
94
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +000095- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
96 menu entries were not deleted.
97
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +000098- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
99 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
100
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000101- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
102 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
103
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000104- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
105 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
106 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
107
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000108- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
109 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
110 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
111
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000112- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
113 the reload() built-in has been removed.
114
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000115- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000116 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000117 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,
118 filecmp, fileinput, inspect, logging, modulefinder, pdb, pickle, profile,
119 pstats, pydoc, re, rlcompleter, SimpleXMLRPCServer, shelve, socket,
120 subprocess, sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter, test.test_support, textwrap,
121 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000122
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000123- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
124 raised an AttributeError.
125
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000126- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000127 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
128 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000129
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +0000130- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification
131 (v. 1.68) and tests (v. 2.58) from IBM.
132
Skip Montanarof9ac43f2008-07-27 00:50:41 +0000133- Issue 3437: Bug fix in robotparser parsing of Allow: lines.
134
Raymond Hettinger8c664e82008-07-25 18:43:33 +0000135- Issue 1592: Improve error reporting when operations are attempted
136 on a closed shelf.
137

143 invalid arguments.
144
145- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
146 with None arguments.
147
148- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
149 configuration files.
150
151- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
152
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000153- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
154 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
155 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.
156
Gregory P. Smitha36f8fe2008-08-04 00:13:29 +0000157- Issue #1857: subprocess.Popen.poll gained an additional _deadstate keyword
158 argument in python 2.5, this broke code that subclassed Popen to include its
159 own poll method. Fixed my moving _deadstate to an _internal_poll method.
160
Martin v. Löwis8dbf3642008-08-01 14:10:26 +0000161Build

165
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000166Documentation
167-------------
168
169- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
170 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
171 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
172 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.

179
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000180Core and Builtins
181-----------------
182
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000183- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
184 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
185 an integer using operator.index().
186
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000187- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
188 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
189
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000190- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
191 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
192
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000193- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
194 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
195 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
196
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000197- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
198 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
199 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
200 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
201 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
202 level.
203
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000204- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
205 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
206 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
207 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
208 all imports from that module to fail.
209
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000210- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
211 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
212 new-style classes.
213
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000214- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
215 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
216 another file in sys.stdout.
217
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000218- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
219 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
220 another thread's dictionary.
221
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000222- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
223 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
224 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
225 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
226 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
227 10, -1).
228
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000229- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
230 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
231 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000232
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000233- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
234 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
235 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000236
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000237Library
238-------
239
Thomas Heller57adf222008-08-14 19:10:48 +0000240- Issue #3554: ctypes.string_at and ctypes.wstring_at did call Python
241 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
242 error when they failed.
243
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000244- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.
245
Jesse Noller7fb96402008-07-17 21:01:05 +0000246- Issue #3395: fix reference in test_multiprocessing to old debugInfo method
247
Georg Brandla24869a2008-07-16 22:33:18 +0000248- Issue #3312: Fix two crashes in sqlite3.

251
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000252- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
253 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
254
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000255- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000256
Thomas Heller880f5292008-07-15 19:39:38 +0000257- Issue #3313: Fixed a crash when a failed dlopen() call does not set
258 a valid dlerror() message.
259
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000260- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
261 incomplete structure was created.

266
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000267- Issue #3301: Bisect module behaved badly when lo was negative.
Raymond Hettinger3cd1e422008-07-10 14:03:19 +0000268
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000269- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
270 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000271 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000272 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
273 merged into trunk.
274
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000275- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

280
281- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously
282 archives with comments over 4k were flagged as invalid). Allow writing
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000283 Zip files with archives by setting the 'comment' attribute of a ZipFile.
Martin v. Löwis8c436412008-07-03 12:51:14 +0000284
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000285- Issue #449227: The rlcompleter module now adds "(" to callable objects
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000286 when completed.
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +0000287
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000288- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
289 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
290
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000291- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

295 interrupted by a signal.
296
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000297- Issue #3309: Fix bz2.BZFile iterator to release its internal lock
Gregory P. Smith3b1e6b22008-07-07 04:31:58 +0000298 properly when raising an exception due to the bz2file being closed.
299 Prevents a deadlock.
300
Gregory P. Smithc4691ec2008-07-07 05:09:12 +0000301- Issue #3094: httplib.HTTPSConnection Host: headers no longer include the
302 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000740- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
741 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
742 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where

Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000809
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000810- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
811 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
812 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
813 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
814 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
815 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
816 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
817 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
818 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
819 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
820 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
821 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
822 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
823 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
824 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
825 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
826 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
827 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
828 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
829 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
830
831 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
832 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
833 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
834 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
835 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
836 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
837 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
838 access to the underlying socket used.
839
840 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
841 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
842 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000843
844 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000845 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000846 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
847 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
848
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000849 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
850 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001137- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1138 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1139 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1140 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1141 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
