13-----------------
14
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +000015- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
16 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
17
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +000018- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
19 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
20 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
21
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +000022- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
23 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
24 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
25 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
26 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
27 failed have been fixed.

40
41- Issue #3303: Fix a crash in locale.strcoll() when calling it with
42 invalid arguments.
43
44- Issue #3302: Fix several crashes when calling locale's gettext functions
45 with None arguments.
46
47- Issue #3389: Allow resolving dotted names for handlers in logging
48 configuration files.
49
50- Deprecate the sunaudio module for removal in Python 3.0.
51
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +000052- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a
53 file name rather than a ZipInfo instance, so files are extracted with
54 mode 0600 rather than 000 under Unix.

61
Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +000062Core and Builtins
63-----------------
64
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +000065- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
66 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
67 an integer using operator.index().
68
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +000069- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
70 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
71
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +000072- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
73 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
74
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +000075- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
76 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
77 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
78
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +000079- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
80 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
81 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
82 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
83 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
84 level.
85
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +000086- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
87 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
88 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
89 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
90 all imports from that module to fail.
91
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +000092- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
93 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
94 new-style classes.
95
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +000096- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
97 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
98 another file in sys.stdout.
99
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000100- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
101 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
102 another thread's dictionary.
103
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000104- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
105 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
106 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
107 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
108 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
109 10, -1).
110
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000111- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
112 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
113 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000114
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000115- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
116 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
117 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().
Gregory P. Smith2fe77062008-07-06 03:35:58 +0000118

127
Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000128- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with

134 a valid dlerror() message.
135
Thomas Heller2bad6572008-07-15 17:19:50 +0000136- Issue #3258: Fixed a crash when a ctypes POINTER type to an
137 incomplete structure was created.
138
Brett Cannon3d0b9f02008-07-13 01:15:07 +0000139- Issue #3339: dummy_thread.acquire() should not return None.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000145- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
146 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000147 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000148 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
149 merged into trunk.
150
Georg Brandle78fbcc2008-07-05 10:13:36 +0000151- Issue #2663: add filtering capability to shutil.copytree().

156
157- Issue #1746: Correct handling of zipfile archive comments (previously

165 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
166
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000167- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for
168 removal in Python 3.0 in favor of urllib2.urlopen().

Gregory P. Smithc4691ec2008-07-07 05:09:12 +0000177- Issue #3094: httplib.HTTPSConnection Host: headers no longer include the
178 redundant ":443" port number designation when the connection is using the
179 default https port (443).

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000616- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
617 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
618 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
619 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
620 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
621 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
622 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
623 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000686- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
687 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
688 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
689 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
690 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
691 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
692 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
693 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
694 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
695 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
696 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
697 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
698 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
699 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
700 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
701 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
702 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
703 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
704 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
705 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
706
707 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
708 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
709 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
710 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
711 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
712 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
713 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
714 access to the underlying socket used.
715
716 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
717 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
718 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000719
720 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000721 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000722 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
723 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
724
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000725 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
726 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000998- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
999
1000- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +00001001
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001002- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001003 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1004
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001005- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1006 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1007 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1008 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1009 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1010 module is:
1011 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1012
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001013- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1014 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1015 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1016 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1017 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1018 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1019
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001020- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1021 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1022 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1023 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1024 PyObject_Format().
1025
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001026- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1027 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1028 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001029
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001030- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001031 prevent a possible crash: an Abstract Base Class would try to access
1032 a slot on a registered virtual subclass.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +00001033
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001034- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001037- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1038 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1039 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001040
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001041- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1042 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
1043 to a bound method.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +00001044
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +00001045- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
1046 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
1047

1054
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001055- Issue #1983: Fixed return type of fork(), fork1() and forkpty()
1056 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1057 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001058
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001059- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001071- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is
1072 the same object as the func_code attribute of the function that
1073 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001074
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001075- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the
1076 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1077 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
1078 correctly emits bytecode for the "else" suite.
