77 passed a value less than or equal to zero.
78
Brett Cannone9746892008-04-12 23:44:07 +000079- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the original Python
80 code has been kept as backup). This will allow for using the 'warning's
81 machinery in such places as the parser where use of pure Python code is not
Brett Cannonb457dda2008-05-02 02:25:09 +000082 possible. Both the ``showarning()`` and ``formatwarning()`` gain an
83 optional 'line' argument which is not called by default for
Brett Cannon8a232cc2008-05-05 05:32:07 +000084 backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting ``warnings.showwarning()`` to
85 an implementation that lacks support for the ``line`` argument will raise a
86 DeprecationWarning.

109
Gregory P. Smithd59fefb2008-04-22 08:11:33 +0000110- The getpass module has been improved on Unix. It now uses /dev/tty
111 by default and uses stderr instead of stdout. A GetPassWarning is
112 issued when input echo cannot be controlled.
Gregory P. Smith41e30182008-04-21 21:31:08 +0000113

130
Gregory P. Smithaa63d0d2008-04-06 23:11:17 +0000131- Issue #815646: Individual file objects may now be used from multiple
132 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
133 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
134 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
135
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +0000136- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released
137 libffi3.0.5 version, apart from some small changes to

141 controlled environment will more closely mirror the typical script
142 environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to data files.
143
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +0000144Tests
145-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000146- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining ports
147 to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an effort to
148 facilitate running multiple instances of the entire regression test suite
149 in parallel without issue. test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such
150 that it will always return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case
151 with the previous implementation, especially if socket options had been
152 set that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
153 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception if it
154 is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the SO_REUSEADDR or
155 SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if available, bind_port()
156 will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on the socket it's been passed.
157 This currently only applies to Windows. This option prevents any other
158 sockets from binding to the host/port we've bound to, thus removing the
159 possibility of the 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it,
160 that occurs when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a
161 host/port that's already been bound by another socket. The optional
162 preferred port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
163 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
164
165 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will pass
166 a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an unused port.
167 The temporary socket object is then closed and deleted, and the port is
168 returned. This method should only be used for obtaining an unused port
169 in order to pass to an external program (i.e. the -accept [port] argument
170 to openssl's s_server mode) or as a parameter to a server-oriented class
171 that doesn't give you direct access to the underlying socket used.
172
173 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used for
174 the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and connect).
175
176 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
177 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
178 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
179 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
180
181 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test suite to
182 run in parallel without issue.

188
Thomas Hellerdc96a772008-04-04 10:07:55 +0000189- Issue #2544: On HP-UX systems, use 'gcc -shared' for linking when
190 gcc is used as compiler.
191
Ronald Oussoren580c7fe2008-05-02 19:45:11 +0000192- Issue #2573: On MacOS X it is now possible to install the framework
193 with a different name using --with-framework-name=NAME.

200 platforms which provide the functions through their libm. The
201 files also contains several helpers and constants for math.
202
Benjamin Petersona692c4d2008-04-27 02:28:02 +0000203- Added a new convenience function, PyErr_WarnPy3k, for issuing Py3k

Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +0000437 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +0000438
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000439- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
440
441- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000442
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000443- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000444 issue 215555 for a discussion.
445
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000446- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
447 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
448 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
449 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
450 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
451 module is:
452 from future_builtins import hex, oct
453
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000454- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
455 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
456 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
457 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
458 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
459 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
460
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000461- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
462 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
463 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
464 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
465 PyObject_Format().
466
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000467- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted __del__
468 methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent state.
469
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000470- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

473
Christian Heimes2f0da532008-02-15 06:57:08 +0000474- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as real or
475 imaginary part.
476
Andrew M. Kuchlingc6511a82008-03-04 01:48:26 +0000477- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation in order
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000478 to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back memory to the
479 OS earlier.
480

482 collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set to a bound method.
483
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000484- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
485 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
486
Christian Heimes6075a822008-02-06 12:44:34 +0000487- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256 entries
488 each.

510 same object as the func_code attribute of the function that produced the
511 generator.
512
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000513- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the compiler,
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000514 even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is supposed to be run when
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000515 the condition is false. Now the compiler correctly emits bytecode for the

619 shifts from ints to longs.
620
Brett Cannon0b14f242007-09-30 19:45:10 +0000621- Issue #1686386: Tuple's tp_repr did not take into account the possibility of
622 having a self-referential tuple, which is possible from C code. Nor did
623 object's tp_str consider that a type's tp_str could do something that could
624 lead to an inifinite recursion. Py_ReprEnter() and Py_EnterRecursiveCall(),
625 respectively, fixed the issues.

690 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
691 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
692 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
693 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000694 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
695 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000696
Georg Brandl2b869942007-03-17 16:08:45 +0000697- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an object

2045-----
2046
Christian Heimes5b970ad2008-02-06 13:33:44 +00002047- Unified naming convention for free lists and their limits. All free lists
2048 in Object/ are named ``free_list``, the counter ``numfree`` and the upper

2050
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002051- ``PySet_Add()`` can now modify a newly created frozenset. Similarly to
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002052 ``PyTuple_SetItem``, it can be used to populate a brand new frozenset; but
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002053 it does not steal a reference to the added item.
2054
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002055- Added ``PySet_Check()`` and ``PyFrozenSet_Check()`` to the set API.

2065
2066- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t# of w#
2067 format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even when
2068 PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return incorrect
2069 results with huge strings.
2070
2071- Issue #1629: Renamed Py_Size, Py_Type and Py_Refcnt to Py_SIZE, Py_TYPE
2072 and Py_REFCNT.
2073

2089 (relevant to strings and sequences of more than 2**31 items).
2090
2091- Make _PyGILState_NoteThreadState() static, it was not used anywhere
