73Core and Builtins
74-----------------
75
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +000076- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
77
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +000078- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
79 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
80 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
81 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
82 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
83 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
84 64bit values.
85
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +000086- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
87 error.
88
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +000089- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
90 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
91 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
92 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
93
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000094- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
95 a unicode argument.
96
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000097- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
98
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000099- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000100 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000101 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
102
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000103- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000104 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
105 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
106 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
107 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
108 type object.
109
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000110- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
111
112- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
113
114- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
115
116- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
117
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000118- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
119 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
120
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000121- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
122 ``__delslice__``.
123
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000124- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
125 library targets in the Makefile.
126
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +0000127- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
128 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
129 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).
130
Benjamin Peterson14cb6bc2008-08-26 17:08:40 +0000131C-API

137-------
138
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc24cb3822008-09-11 20:56:13 +0000139- Issue #3640: Pickling a list or a dict uses less local variables, to reduce
140 stack usage in the case of deeply nested objects.
141

145
Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +0000146- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
147 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
148 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.
149
Vinay Sajip844f7412008-09-09 13:42:08 +0000150- Issue #3809: Fixed spurious 'test.blah' file left behind by test_logging.

179 warnings.catch_warnings() along with some API cleanup. Expanding the tests
180 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a
181 DeprecationWarning related to warnings.warn_explicit().
182
Benjamin Peterson973e6c22008-09-01 23:12:58 +0000183- The deprecation warnings for the old camelCase threading API were removed.

246
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000247*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000248
249Core and Builtins
250-----------------
251
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000252- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
253 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
254 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
255 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
256 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
257 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
258 default.
259
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000260- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
261 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
262
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000263- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
264 value again.
265
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000266- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
267 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
268 and introducing s*.
269
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000270- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
271 object was stored in the freelist.
272
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000273- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
274 ValueError consistently across platforms.
275
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000276- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
277 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
278 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
279
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000280- Apply security patches from Apple.
281
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000282- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
283 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
284
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000285- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
286 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
287
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000288- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
289 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
290 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
291
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000292- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
293 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
294 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
295 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
296 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
297 failed have been fixed.
298
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000299Library
300-------
301
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000302- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
303
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000304- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
305 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
306
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000307- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
308 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
309 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
310
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000311- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
312 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
313 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
314 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
315 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
316 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
317
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000318- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
319 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
320

Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000443Core and Builtins
444-----------------
445
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000446- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
447 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
448 an integer using operator.index().
449
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000450- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
451 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
452
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000453- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
454 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
455
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000456- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
457 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
458 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
459
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000460- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
461 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
462 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
463 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
464 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
465 level.
466
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000467- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
468 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
469 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
470 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
471 all imports from that module to fail.
472
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000473- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
474 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
475 new-style classes.
476
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000477- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
478 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
479 another file in sys.stdout.
480
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000481- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
482 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
483 another thread's dictionary.
484
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000485- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
486 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
487 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
488 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
489 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
490 10, -1).
491
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000492- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
493 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
494 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000495
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000496- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with

505 error when they failed.
506
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000507- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000532- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
533 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000534 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000535 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
536 merged into trunk.

553
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000554- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001006- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1007 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1008 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1009 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

1011 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1012 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001076- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1077 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1078 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1079 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1080 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1081 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1082 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1083 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1084 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1085 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1086 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1087 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1088 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1089 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1090 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1091 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1092 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1093 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1094 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1095 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1096
1097 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1098 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1099 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1100 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1101 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1102 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1103 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1104 access to the underlying socket used.
1105
1106 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1107 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1108 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001109
1110 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001111 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1114
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001115 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test

1394
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001395- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1396 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1397 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1398 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1399 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1400 module is:
1401 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1402
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001403- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1404 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1405 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1406 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1407 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1408 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1409
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001410- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1411 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1412 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1413 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1414 PyObject_Format().
1415
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001416- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1417 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1418 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001419
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001420- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001424- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as
1425 real or imaginary part.
Christian Heimes2f0da532008-02-15 06:57:08 +00001426
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001427- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1428 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1429 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001430
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001431- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
1432 subclass of collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set
