Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000370- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
371
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000372- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
373 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
374 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
375 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
376 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
377 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
378 64bit values.
379
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000380- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on

382
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000383- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
384 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
385 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
386 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
387
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000388- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with

Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000398 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
399 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
400 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
401 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000542
543Core and Builtins
544-----------------
545
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000546- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
547 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
548 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
549 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
550 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
551 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
552 default.
553
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000554- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
555 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
556
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000557- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
558 value again.
559
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000560- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
561 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
562 and introducing s*.
563
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000564- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
565 object was stored in the freelist.
566
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000567- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
568 ValueError consistently across platforms.
569
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000570- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
571 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
572 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
573
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000574- Apply security patches from Apple.
575
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000576- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
577 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
578
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000579- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
580 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
581
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000582- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
583 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
584 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
585
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000586- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
587 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
588 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
589 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
590 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
591 failed have been fixed.

594-------
595
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000596- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
597
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000598- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
599 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
600
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000601- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
602 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
603 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
604
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000605- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
606 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
607 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
608 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
609 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
610 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
611
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000612- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
613 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
614
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000615- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
616
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000617- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
618
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000619- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
620
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000621- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
622 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
623
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000624- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
625 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
626
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000627- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
628 in a redirect.
629
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000630- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in

739
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000740- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
741 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
742 an integer using operator.index().
743
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000744- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
745 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
746
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000747- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
748 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
749
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000750- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
751 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
752 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
753
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000754- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
755 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
756 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
757 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
758 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
759 level.
760
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000761- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
762 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
763 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
764 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
765 all imports from that module to fail.
766
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000767- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
768 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
769 new-style classes.
770
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000771- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is

773 another file in sys.stdout.
774
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000775- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from

777 another thread's dictionary.
778
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000779- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
780 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
781 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
782 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
783 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
784 10, -1).
785
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000786- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
787 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
788 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000826- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
827 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000828 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000829 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +00001217 environment to control the '-arch' flags that are used to build
1218 an extension. This was added for compatibility with Apple's build
1219 of Python.
1220
1221- The bundled OSX-specific copy of libbffi is now in sync with the version
1222 shipped with PyObjC 2.0 and includes support for x86_64 and ppc64 platforms.
1223
Georg Brandl25c34082008-08-18 23:09:49 +00001224- The threading module gained aliases for names that will be removed in the

1233
Brett Cannonb61d8012008-05-11 23:39:04 +00001234- ``Lib/lib-old`` is now added to sys.path.
1235
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +00001236- On MacOS X it is now possible to install the framework in 64-bit
1237 mode or even as a 4-way universal binary (that is, PPC, i386,
Georg Brandl5cc774e2008-06-11 20:28:06 +00001238 PPC64 and x86_64 support in one binary).
Ronald Oussoren5640ce22008-06-05 12:58:24 +00001239
1240 This is controlled by the configure argument ``--with-universal-archs``:
1241
1242 - ``--with-universal-archs=all``: install 4-way universal
1243
1244 - ``--with-universal-archs=32-bit``: install 2-way universal, 32-bit (the default)
1245
1246 - ``--with-universal-archs=64-bit``: install 2-way universal, 64-bit
1247
1248 This option should be used in combination with ``--enable-universalsdk=``.
1249
1250 NOTE: 64-bit and 4-way builds are only suppported on Mac OS X 10.5 (or later).

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001300- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1301 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1302 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1303 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1304 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1305 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1306 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

1368-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001369
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001370- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1371 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1372 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1373 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1374 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1375 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1376 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1377 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1378 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1379 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1380 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1381 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1382 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1383 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1384 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1385 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1386 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1387 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1388 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1389 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1390
1391 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1392 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1393 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1394 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1395 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1396 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1397 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1398 access to the underlying socket used.
1399
1400 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1401 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1402 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001403
1404 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001405 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1407 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1408
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001409 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1410 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1688
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001689- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1690 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1691 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1692 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1693 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1694 module is:
1695 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1696
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001697- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1698 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1699 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1700 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1701 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1702 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1703
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001704- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1705 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1706 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and

1708 PyObject_Format().
1709
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001710- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1711 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent

1722 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1723 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001724
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001725- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a
