Georg Brandl6425a2f2008-12-28 11:54:53 +000015- Issue #4759: None is now allowed as the first argument of

19 fail.
20
Antoine Pitrou73c0e652008-12-17 22:46:54 +000021- Issue #2467: gc.DEBUG_STATS reported invalid elapsed times. Also, always

37 "offsetof(PyStringObject, ob_sval) + 1" when allocating memory for
38 str instances. On a typical machine this saves 3 bytes of memory
39 (on average) per string allocation.
40
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcdc619012008-11-22 20:01:18 +000041- Issue #3996: On Windows, the PyOS_CheckStack function would cause the
42 interpreter to abort ("Fatal Python error: Could not reset the stack!")
43 instead of throwing a MemoryError.

50
Vinay Sajip213faca2008-12-03 23:22:58 +000051- Issue #4233: Changed semantic of ``_fileio.FileIO``'s ``close()``
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc32265652008-11-20 23:34:31 +000052 method on file objects with closefd=False. The file descriptor is still
53 kept open but the file object behaves like a closed file. The ``FileIO``
54 object also got a new readonly attribute ``closefd``.
55
Benjamin Peterson46cc6d12008-11-19 21:49:09 +000056- Issue #4348: Some bytearray methods returned that didn't cause any change to

72 __future__ import didn't work.
73
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000074- Using ``nonlocal`` as a variable name will now raise a Py3k SyntaxWarning
Georg Brandl7fb00ad2008-10-25 07:00:52 +000075 because it is a reserved word in 3.x.
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000076

82 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
83 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
84 it correctly refers to the initial element.
85

329Core and Builtins
330-----------------
331
Martin v. Löwis9fa5a282008-09-11 06:53:30 +0000332- Issue #3642: Suppress warning in obmalloc when size_t is larger than uint.
333
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000334- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
335 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
336 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
337 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
338 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
339 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
340 64bit values.
341
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000342- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on
343 error.
344
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd3ffb892008-09-09 07:24:30 +0000345- Issue #3777: long() applied to a float object now always return a long
346 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
347 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
348 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
349
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000350- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
351 a unicode argument.
352
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +0000353- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
354
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000355- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000356 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +0000357 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
358
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000359- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000360 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
361 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
362 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
363 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
364 type object.
365
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +0000366- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.
367
368- Fix memory leaks found with valgrind and update suppressions file.
369
370- Fix compiler warnings in opt mode which would lead to invalid memory reads.
371
372- Fix problem using wrong name in decimal module reported by pychecker.
373
Christian Heimes7d4c3172008-08-22 19:47:25 +0000374- Silenced another compiler warning about a used but not defined
375 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
376
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +0000377- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
378 ``__delslice__``.
379
Gregory P. Smith2bb25cc2008-09-02 05:29:51 +0000380- Issue #3678: Correctly pass LDFLAGS and LDLAST to the linker on shared
381 library targets in the Makefile.
382
Gregory P. Smith980b99b2008-09-07 05:15:18 +0000383- Issue #1204: The configure script now tests for additional libraries
384 that may be required when linking against readline. This fixes issues
385 with x86_64 builds on some platforms (a few Linux flavors and OpenBSD).

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc24cb3822008-09-11 20:56:13 +0000395- Issue #3640: Pickling a list or a dict uses less local variables, to reduce
396 stack usage in the case of deeply nested objects.
397

401
Nick Coghland2e09382008-09-11 12:11:06 +0000402- Issue #3781: Further warnings.catch_warnings() cleanup to prevent
403 silent misbehaviour when a single instance is nested in multiple
404 with statements, or when the methods are invoked in the wrong order.
405
Vinay Sajip844f7412008-09-09 13:42:08 +0000406- Issue #3809: Fixed spurious 'test.blah' file left behind by test_logging.

435 warnings.catch_warnings() along with some API cleanup. Expanding the tests
436 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a
437 DeprecationWarning related to warnings.warn_explicit().
438
Benjamin Peterson973e6c22008-09-01 23:12:58 +0000439- The deprecation warnings for the old camelCase threading API were removed.

502
Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000503*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000504
505Core and Builtins
506-----------------
507
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000508- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
509 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
510 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
511 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
512 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
513 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
514 default.
515
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000516- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
517 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
518
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000519- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
520 value again.
521
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000522- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
523 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
524 and introducing s*.
525
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000526- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
527 object was stored in the freelist.
528
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000529- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
530 ValueError consistently across platforms.
531
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000532- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
533 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
534 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
535
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000536- Apply security patches from Apple.
537
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000538- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
539 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
540
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000541- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
542 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
543
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000544- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
545 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
546 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
547
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000548- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
549 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
550 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
551 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
552 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
553 failed have been fixed.
554
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000555Library
556-------
557
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000558- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
559
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000560- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
561 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
562
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000563- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
564 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
565 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
566
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000567- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
568 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
569 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
570 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
571 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
572 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
573
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000574- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
575 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
576
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000577- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
578
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000579- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
580
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000581- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
582
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000583- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
584 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
585
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000586- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
587 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
588
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000589- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
590 in a redirect.
591
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000592- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000593 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000594
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000595- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
596 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
597
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000598- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
599 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
600 regular expression.
601
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000602- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
603 thread-safe.
604
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000605- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
606 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
607 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
608
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000609- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
610
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000611- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
612 menu entries were not deleted.
613
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000614- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
615 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
616
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000617- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
618 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
619
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000620- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
621 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody

701
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000702- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
703 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
704 an integer using operator.index().
705
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000706- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
707 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
708
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000709- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
710 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
711
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000712- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
713 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
714 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
715
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000716- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
717 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
718 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
719 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
720 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
721 level.
722
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000723- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
724 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
725 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
726 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
727 all imports from that module to fail.
728
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000729- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
730 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
731 new-style classes.
732
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000733- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is

735 another file in sys.stdout.
736
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000737- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from

739 another thread's dictionary.
740
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000741- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
742 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
743 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
744 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
745 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
746 10, -1).
747
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000748- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
749 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
750 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000751
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000752- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000788- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
789 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000790 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000791 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001262- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1263 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1264 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1265 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``

1267 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1268 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support

1330-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001331
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001332- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1333 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1334 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1335 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1336 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1337 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1338 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1339 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1340 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1341 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1342 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1343 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1344 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1345 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1346 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1347 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1348 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1349 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1350 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1351 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1352
1353 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1354 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1355 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1356 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1357 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1358 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1359 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1360 access to the underlying socket used.
1361
1362 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1363 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1364 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001365
1366 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001367 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1369 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1370
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001371 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1372 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001651- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1652 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be

Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001659- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1660 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1661 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1662 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1663 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1664 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1665
