78 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
79 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
80 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
81
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +000082- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released

89
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +000090Tests
91-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +000092- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining ports
93 to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an effort to
94 facilitate running multiple instances of the entire regression test suite
95 in parallel without issue. test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such
96 that it will always return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case
97 with the previous implementation, especially if socket options had been
98 set that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
99 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception if it
100 is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the SO_REUSEADDR or
101 SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if available, bind_port()
102 will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on the socket it's been passed.
103 This currently only applies to Windows. This option prevents any other
104 sockets from binding to the host/port we've bound to, thus removing the
105 possibility of the 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it,
106 that occurs when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a
107 host/port that's already been bound by another socket. The optional
108 preferred port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
109 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
110
111 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will pass
112 a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an unused port.
113 The temporary socket object is then closed and deleted, and the port is
114 returned. This method should only be used for obtaining an unused port
115 in order to pass to an external program (i.e. the -accept [port] argument
116 to openssl's s_server mode) or as a parameter to a server-oriented class
117 that doesn't give you direct access to the underlying socket used.
118
119 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used for
120 the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and connect).
121
122 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
123 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
124 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
125 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
126
127 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test suite to
128 run in parallel without issue.

Mark Dickinson65134662008-04-25 16:11:04 +0000133- Issue #1496032: On alpha, use -mieee when gcc is the compiler.
134
Thomas Hellerdc96a772008-04-04 10:07:55 +0000135- Issue #2544: On HP-UX systems, use 'gcc -shared' for linking when
136 gcc is used as compiler.
137
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +0000138C API
139-----
140
Christian Heimes6f341092008-04-18 23:13:07 +0000141- Added implementation of copysign, acosh, asinh, atanh and log1p
142 to the new files Include/pymath.h and Python/pymath.h for
143 platforms which provide the functions through their libm. The
144 files also contains several helpers and constants for math.

373Core and builtins
374-----------------
375
Fred Drakea8ee94b2008-03-01 02:45:07 +0000376- Issue #2051: pyc and pyo files are no longer created with permission
Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +0000377 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +0000378
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000379- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
380
381- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000382
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000383- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000384 issue 215555 for a discussion.
385
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000386- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
387 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
388 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
389 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
390 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
391 module is:
392 from future_builtins import hex, oct
393
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000394- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
395 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
396 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
397 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
398 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
399 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
400
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000401- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
402 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
403 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
404 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
405 PyObject_Format().
406
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +0000407- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted __del__
408 methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent state.
409
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000410- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc60d6c7f2008-02-15 21:22:45 +0000412 on a registered virtual subclass.
413
Christian Heimes2f0da532008-02-15 06:57:08 +0000414- Fixed repr() and str() of complex numbers with infinity or nan as real or
415 imaginary part.
416
Andrew M. Kuchlingc6511a82008-03-04 01:48:26 +0000417- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation in order
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000418 to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back memory to the
419 OS earlier.
420
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcb01aa432008-02-08 00:56:02 +0000421- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a subclass of
422 collections.defaultdict, if its default_factory is set to a bound method.
423
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000424- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
425 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
426
Christian Heimes6075a822008-02-06 12:44:34 +0000427- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256 entries
428 each.

Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +0000434- Bug #1983: Fixed return type of fork(), fork1() and forkpty() calls.
435 Python expected the return type int but the fork familie returns pi_t.
436
Mark Dickinson105be772008-01-31 22:17:37 +0000437- Issue #1678380: Fix a bug that identifies 0j and -0j when they appear
438 in the same code unit.

448
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +0000449- Patch #1473257: generator objects gain a gi_code attribute. This is the
450 same object as the func_code attribute of the function that produced the
451 generator.
452
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000453- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the compiler,
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000454 even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is supposed to be run when
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000455 the condition is false. Now the compiler correctly emits bytecode for the
456 "else" suite.
457

579 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger recursion
580 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
581 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past
582 its limit. Fixes crashers infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.

630 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when

633 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000634 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
635 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000636

662

2005
2006- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t# of w#
2007 format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even when
2008 PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return incorrect
2009 results with huge strings.

2029 (relevant to strings and sequences of more than 2**31 items).
2030
2031- Make _PyGILState_NoteThreadState() static, it was not used anywhere
2032 outside of pystate.c and should not be necessary.
2033
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002034- ``PyImport_Import`` and ``PyImport_ImportModule`` now always do absolute
2035 imports. In earlier versions they might have used relative imports under
2036 some conditions.
2037
Andrew M. Kuchlingadc60ab2008-01-04 02:26:00 +00002038- Added case insensitive comparison methods ``PyOS_stricmp(char*, char*)``
