11
12Core and Builtins
13-----------------
14
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +000015- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
16 a unicode argument.
17
Benjamin Peterson17f03ca2008-09-01 14:18:30 +000018- Issue #3683: Fix compilation when --without-threads is given.
19
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000020- Issue #3668: Fix a memory leak with the "s*" argument parser in
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000021 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"
Antoine Pitroud4ae97b2008-08-29 18:39:48 +000022 was correctly parsed but parsing of subsequent arguments failed.
23
Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +000024- Issue #2534: speed up isinstance() and issubclass() by 50-70%, so as to
Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +000025 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
26 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
27 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
28 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each
29 type object.
30
Neal Norwitz18aa3882008-08-24 05:04:52 +000031- Fix crashes on memory allocation failure found with failmalloc.

43 function 'stringlib_contains_obj'.
44
Benjamin Peterson712ee922008-08-24 18:10:20 +000045- Added warnings on the use of ``__getslice__``, ``__setslice__``, or
46 ``__delslice__``.
47

66 its symbolic link.
67
Vinay Sajip65d66e12008-09-04 07:31:21 +000068- Issue #3772: Fixed regression problem in StreamHandler.emit().
69
Facundo Batistac585df92008-09-03 22:35:50 +000070- Issue 600362: Relocated parse_qs() and parse_qsl(), from the cgi module
71 to the urlparse one. Added a PendingDeprecationWarning in the old
72 module, it will be deprecated in the future.
73

80 path to the Python binary.
81
Brett Cannon1eaf0742008-09-02 01:25:16 +000082- Issue 3602: Moved test.test_support.catch_warning() to
83 warnings.catch_warnings() along with some API cleanup. Expanding the tests
84 for catch_warnings() also led to an improvement in the raising of a
85 DeprecationWarning related to warnings.warn_explicit().
86
Benjamin Peterson973e6c22008-09-01 23:12:58 +000087- The deprecation warnings for the old camelCase threading API were removed.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000132
133Core and Builtins
134-----------------
135
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000136- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
137 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
138 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
139 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
140 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
141 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
142 default.
143
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000144- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
145 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
146
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000147- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
148 value again.
149
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000150- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
151 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
152 and introducing s*.
153
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000154- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
155 object was stored in the freelist.
156
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000157- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
158 ValueError consistently across platforms.
159
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000160- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
161 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
162 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
163
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000164- Apply security patches from Apple.
165
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000166- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
167 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
168
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000169- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
170 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
171
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000172- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
173 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
174 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
175
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000176- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
177 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
178 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
179 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
180 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
181 failed have been fixed.
182
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000183Library
184-------
185
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000186- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
187
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000188- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
189 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
190
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000191- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
192 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
193 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
194
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000195- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
196 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
197 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
198 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
199 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
200 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
201
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000202- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
203 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
204
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000205- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
206
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000207- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
208
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000209- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
210
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000211- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
212 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
213
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000214- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
215 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
216
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000217- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
218 in a redirect.
219
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000220- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000221 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000222
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000223- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
224 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
225
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000226- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
227 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
228 regular expression.
229
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000230- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
231 thread-safe.
232
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000233- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
234 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
235 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
236
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000237- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
238
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000239- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
240 menu entries were not deleted.
241
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000242- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
243 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
244
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000245- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
246 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
247
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000248- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
249 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
250 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
251
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000252- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
253 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
254 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
255
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000256- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
257 the reload() built-in has been removed.
258
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000259- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000260 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,
Brett Cannon047e4a92008-08-17 04:16:04 +0000261 ConfigParser, cookielib, csv, difflib, distutils, DocXMLRPCServer, email,

264 subprocess, sqlite3, tarfile, Tkinter, test.test_support, textwrap,
265 threading, tokenize, traceback, urlparse, wsgiref, xml, xmlrpclib.
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000266
Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000267- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
268 raised an AttributeError.
269

Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000271 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
272 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000273
Mark Dickinsonfe84cce2008-07-27 06:39:07 +0000274- Issue #3449: Update decimal module to use most recent specification

296
Antoine Pitrou5fdfa3e2008-07-25 19:42:26 +0000297- Issue #3394: zipfile.writestr sets external attributes when passed a

314 interaction with the tp_hash slot (added in 2.6b2) are now documented
315
Nick Coghlan2a0c2b12008-08-04 12:47:17 +0000316- Issue #643841: The language reference now provides more detailed
317 coverage of the lookup process for special methods. The disclaimers
318 regarding lack of coverage of new-style classes have also been
319 removed, since the coverage is now fairly reasonable.

Raymond Hettingere3ae6552008-06-20 04:18:15 +0000327Core and Builtins
328-----------------
329
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000330- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
331 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
332 an integer using operator.index().
333
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000334- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
335 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
336
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000337- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
338 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
339
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000340- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
341 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
342 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
343
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000344- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
345 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
346 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
347 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
348 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
349 level.
350
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000351- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
352 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
353 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
354 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
355 all imports from that module to fail.
356
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000357- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
358 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
359 new-style classes.
360
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000361- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is
362 set to a custom object whose write() method happens to install
363 another file in sys.stdout.
364
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000365- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from
366 threading.local: the first member set by a thread could be saved in
367 another thread's dictionary.
368
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000369- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
370 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
371 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
372 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
373 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
374 10, -1).
375
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000376- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
377 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
378 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.
Benjamin Peterson175e4d92008-07-01 19:34:52 +0000379
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000380- Issue #2862: Make int and float freelist management consistent with
381 other freelists. Changes their CompactFreeList apis into
382 ClearFreeList apis and calls them via gc.collect().

388 api functions without holding the GIL, which could lead to a fatal
389 error when they failed.
390
Martin v. Löwisaabf4042008-08-02 07:20:25 +0000391- Issue #799428: Fix Tkinter.Misc._nametowidget to unwrap Tcl command objects.

Jesse Noller13e9d582008-07-16 14:32:36 +0000399- Issue #3125: Remove copy_reg in multiprocessing and replace it with
400 ForkingPickler.register() to resolve conflict with ctypes.
401
Vinay Sajip51e65192008-07-18 09:01:10 +0000402- Issue #3090: Fixed ARCHFLAGS parsing on OS/X

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000416- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
417 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000418 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000419 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never
420 merged into trunk.

Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000433 when completed.
Facundo Batista66c52772008-07-02 16:52:55 +0000434
Nick Coghlanc060b0e2008-07-02 13:09:19 +0000435- Issue #3190: Pydoc now hides the automatic module attribute __package__ (the
436 handling is now the same as that of other special attributes like __name__).
437
Brett Cannon8bb8fa52008-07-02 01:57:08 +0000438- Issue #2885 (partial): The urllib.urlopen() function has been deprecated for

893 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
894 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
895 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
896 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
897 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000960- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
961 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
962 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
963 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
964 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
965 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
966 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
967 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
968 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
969 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
970 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
971 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
972 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
973 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
974 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
975 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
976 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
977 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
978 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
979 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
980
981 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
982 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
983 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
984 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
985 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
986 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
987 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
988 access to the underlying socket used.
989
990 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
991 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
992 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000993
994 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000995 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

997 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
998
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +0000999 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1000 suite to run in parallel without issue.

Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001276- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +00001277 issue 215555 for a discussion.
1278
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001279- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1280 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1281 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1282 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1283 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1284 module is:
1285 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1286
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001287- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1288 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1289 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1290 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1291 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1292 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1293
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001294- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1295 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1296 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1297 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1298 PyObject_Format().
1299
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001300- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1301 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1302 state.
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc632fad32008-02-16 20:55:24 +00001303
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00001304- Issue #2115: Important speedup in setting __slot__ attributes. Also

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001311- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation
1312 in order to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back
1313 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001314
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001315- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a

1331 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001332

1350 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1351 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
