Georg Brandlfe7b00f2012-10-06 13:49:34 +020016Python's interfaces for processing XML are grouped in the ``xml`` package.

Georg Brandlfe7b00f2012-10-06 13:49:34 +020025It is important to note that modules in the :mod:`xml` package require that
26there be at least one SAX-compliant XML parser available. The Expat parser is
27included with Python, so the :mod:`xml.parsers.expat` module will always be
28available.
29
30The documentation for the :mod:`xml.dom` and :mod:`xml.sax` packages are the
31definition of the Python bindings for the DOM and SAX interfaces.
32
33The XML handling submodules are:
34
35* :mod:`xml.etree.ElementTree`: the ElementTree API, a simple and lightweight

55The XML processing modules are not secure against maliciously constructed data.
Andrew Kuchling4da9ab02014-02-15 15:33:44 -050056An attacker can abuse XML features to carry out denial of service attacks,
57access local files, generate network connections to other machines, or
58circumvent firewalls.

Andrew Kuchling4da9ab02014-02-15 15:33:44 -050060The following table gives an overview of the known attacks and whether
61the various modules are vulnerable to them.

Miss Islington (bot)27067852021-08-29 07:32:50 -0700731. Expat 2.4.1 and newer is not vulnerable to the "billion laughs" and
74 "quadratic blowup" vulnerabilities. Items still listed as vulnerable due to
75 potential reliance on system-provided libraries. Check
76 :data:`pyexpat.EXPAT_VERSION`.
772. :mod:`xml.etree.ElementTree` doesn't expand external entities and raises a
Andrew Kuchling4da9ab02014-02-15 15:33:44 -050078 :exc:`ParserError` when an entity occurs.
Miss Islington (bot)27067852021-08-29 07:32:50 -0700793. :mod:`xml.dom.minidom` doesn't expand external entities and simply returns
Christian Heimes7380a672013-03-26 17:35:55 +010080 the unexpanded entity verbatim.
Miss Islington (bot)27067852021-08-29 07:32:50 -0700814. :mod:`xmlrpclib` doesn't expand external entities and omits them.
825. Since Python 3.7.1, external general entities are no longer processed by
Jules Lasne (jlasne)82d73552018-12-19 07:05:14 +010083 default.

86billion laughs / exponential entity expansion
87 The `Billion Laughs`_ attack -- also known as exponential entity expansion --
88 uses multiple levels of nested entities. Each entity refers to another entity
Andrew Kuchling4da9ab02014-02-15 15:33:44 -050089 several times, and the final entity definition contains a small string.
90 The exponential expansion results in several gigabytes of text and
91 consumes lots of memory and CPU time.
Christian Heimes7380a672013-03-26 17:35:55 +010092
93quadratic blowup entity expansion
94 A quadratic blowup attack is similar to a `Billion Laughs`_ attack; it abuses
95 entity expansion, too. Instead of nested entities it repeats one large entity
96 with a couple of thousand chars over and over again. The attack isn't as
Andrew Kuchling4da9ab02014-02-15 15:33:44 -050097 efficient as the exponential case but it avoids triggering parser countermeasures
98 that forbid deeply-nested entities.
Christian Heimes7380a672013-03-26 17:35:55 +010099
100external entity expansion
101 Entity declarations can contain more than just text for replacement. They can
Andrew Kuchling4da9ab02014-02-15 15:33:44 -0500102 also point to external resources or local files. The XML
103 parser accesses the resource and embeds the content into the XML document.
Christian Heimes7380a672013-03-26 17:35:55 +0100104
Georg Brandl5d941342016-02-26 19:37:12 +0100105`DTD`_ retrieval
R David Murray66c93502014-01-13 13:51:17 -0500106 Some XML libraries like Python's :mod:`xml.dom.pulldom` retrieve document type
Christian Heimes7380a672013-03-26 17:35:55 +0100107 definitions from remote or local locations. The feature has similar
108 implications as the external entity expansion issue.
109
110decompression bomb
Andrew Kuchling4da9ab02014-02-15 15:33:44 -0500111 Decompression bombs (aka `ZIP bomb`_) apply to all XML libraries
112 that can parse compressed XML streams such as gzipped HTTP streams or
113 LZMA-compressed
Christian Heimes7380a672013-03-26 17:35:55 +0100114 files. For an attacker it can reduce the amount of transmitted data by three
115 magnitudes or more.

125`defusedxml`_ is a pure Python package with modified subclasses of all stdlib
Andrew Kuchling4da9ab02014-02-15 15:33:44 -0500126XML parsers that prevent any potentially malicious operation. Use of this
127package is recommended for any server code that parses untrusted XML data. The
128package also ships with example exploits and extended documentation on more
129XML exploits such as XPath injection.
