Anthony Baxterb4096662006-08-16 03:42:26 +0000322*Release date: 17-AUG-2006*
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000323
324Core and builtins
325-----------------
326
Neal Norwitz24b6f202006-09-05 04:43:56 +0000327- Fix infinite recursion when subclassing long and overriding __hash__.
328
329- Fix concatenation (+=) of long strings.
330
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000331- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000332 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
333 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000334
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000335 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
336 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
337 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
338 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
339 exception, logged, etc.
340
341 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
342 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000343
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000344- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.
345
346- Fix bug related to __len__ functions using values > 2**32 on 64-bit machines
347 with new-style classes.
348
349- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
350 classic classes.
351
352- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
353 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
354 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
355 to effectively use __index__.
356
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +0000357- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
358 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
359
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +0000360- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.
361
Georg Brandl7e3ba2a2006-08-06 08:23:54 +0000362- Bug #1535165: fixed a segfault in input() and raw_input() when
363 sys.stdin is closed.
364
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +0000365- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
366 the Python dll again.
367
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000368- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
369 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
370 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
371 will be regenerated.
372
Neal Norwitz0cbd8052006-08-04 05:09:28 +0000373- Bug #1333982: string/number constants were inappropriately stored
374 in the byte code and co_consts even if they were not used, ie
375 immediately popped off the stack.
376
Georg Brandle9462c72006-08-04 18:03:37 +0000377- Fixed a reference-counting problem in property().
378
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000379
380Library
381-------
382
Neil Schemenauer4c6b0d52006-08-16 23:38:05 +0000383- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
384 generated for generator expressions.
385
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +0000386- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to
387 keep it programmatically in sync with the Python version running
388 the code (introduced in 2.5b3) has been reverted. It will continue
389 to be maintained manually as static string literal.
390
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000391- If the Python part of a ctypes callback function returns None,
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000392 and this cannot be converted to the required C type, an exception is
393 printed with PyErr_WriteUnraisable. Before this change, the C
Andrew M. Kuchlingc13324e2006-08-16 17:11:18 +0000394 callback returned arbitrary values to the calling code.
Thomas Hellerb4a0cf12006-08-16 15:10:12 +0000395
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000396- The __repr__ method of a NULL ctypes.py_object() no longer raises
Thomas Hellerb0aa98f2006-08-16 14:07:44 +0000397 an exception.
398
Tim Peterscbdd3502006-09-05 01:47:53 +0000399- uuid.UUID now has a bytes_le attribute. This returns the UUID in
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000400 little-endian byte order for Windows. In addition, uuid.py gained some
Anthony Baxter58179592006-08-16 13:08:25 +0000401 workarounds for clocks with low resolution, to stop the code yielding
402 duplicate UUIDs.
403
Kurt B. Kaiserd112bc72006-08-16 05:01:42 +0000404- Patch #1540892: site.py Quitter() class attempts to close sys.stdin
405 before raising SystemExit, allowing IDLE to honor quit() and exit().
406
Neal Norwitzbf8c1952006-08-15 04:14:57 +0000407- Bug #1224621: make tabnanny recognize IndentationErrors raised by tokenize.
408
Georg Brandl7a1af772006-08-14 21:55:28 +0000409- Patch #1536071: trace.py should now find the full module name of a
410 file correctly even on Windows.
411
Georg Brandl0a7d1bb2006-08-11 07:26:10 +0000412- logging's atexit hook now runs even if the rest of the module has
413 already been cleaned up.
414
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000415- Bug #1112549, fix DoS attack on cgi.FieldStorage.
Guido van Rossum133f4e42006-08-10 17:42:50 +0000416
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000417- Bug #1531405, format_exception no longer raises an exception if
418 str(exception) raised an exception.
419
Neil Schemenauer06ded092006-08-04 16:20:30 +0000420- Fix a bug in the ``compiler`` package that caused invalid code to be
421 generated for nested functions.
422
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000423
424Extension Modules
425-----------------
426
Neal Norwitz9a244792006-09-05 04:49:45 +0000427- Ignore data that arrives before the opening start tag in C etree.
428
Neal Norwitzbf8c1952006-08-15 04:14:57 +0000429- Patch #1511317: don't crash on invalid hostname (alias) info.
430
Georg Brandl3335a7a2006-08-14 21:42:55 +0000431- Patch #1535500: fix segfault in BZ2File.writelines and make sure it
432 raises the correct exceptions.
433
Thomas Heller1ce433e2006-08-14 16:20:04 +0000434- Patch # 1536908: enable building ctypes on OpenBSD/AMD64. The
435 '-no-stack-protector' compiler flag for OpenBSD has been removed.
436
Thomas Heller86720042006-08-14 11:17:48 +0000437- Patch #1532975 was applied, which fixes Bug #1533481: ctypes now
438 uses the _as_parameter_ attribute when objects are passed to foreign
439 function calls. The ctypes version number was changed to 1.0.1.
440
Bob Ippolitoe6c9f982006-08-04 23:59:21 +0000441- Bug #1530559, struct.pack raises TypeError where it used to convert.
442 Passing float arguments to struct.pack when integers are expected
443 now triggers a DeprecationWarning.
444
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000445

453
Georg Brandl9908d162006-08-06 07:06:33 +0000454- Bug #1535182: really test the xreadlines() method of bz2 objects.
455
Andrew MacIntyre16ee33a2006-08-06 12:37:03 +0000456- test_threading now skips testing alternate thread stack sizes on
457 platforms that don't support changing thread stack size.
458
Neal Norwitzff4b63b2006-08-04 04:50:21 +0000459

Anthony Baxter5d32a9f2006-08-02 07:43:09 +0000491*Release date: 03-AUG-2006*
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000492
493Core and builtins
494-----------------
495
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000496- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +0000497 returned a long (see PEP 353).
498
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +0000499- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
500
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +0000501- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
502 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
503 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
504
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +0000505- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
506 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
507
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000508- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
509 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
510 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
511 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
512
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000513- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
514 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
515 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
516 the code to make that compiler happy again.
517
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +0000518- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.
519
Martin v. Löwisd22968a2006-07-24 11:54:53 +0000520- Patch #1232023: Stop including current directory in search
521 path on Windows.
522
Neal Norwitze1fdb322006-07-21 05:32:28 +0000523- Fix some potential crashes found with failmalloc.
524
Neal Norwitze7563102006-07-17 01:00:16 +0000525- Fix warnings reported by Klocwork's static analysis tool.
526
Neal Norwitz84be93b2006-07-16 01:50:38 +0000527- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code within a function
528 had more than 255 blank lines.
529
Georg Brandl9dceedb2006-07-12 15:31:17 +0000530- Patch #1521179: Python now accepts the standard options ``--help`` and
531 ``--version`` as well as ``/?`` on Windows.
532
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000533- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000534 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000535 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000536
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000537- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000538 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000539 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,
540 mapping the faux "thread id" 0 to the current frame.
541
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000542- Bug #1525447: build on MacOS X on a case-sensitive filesystem.
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000543
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000544
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000545Library
546-------
547
Martin v. Löwis961b91b2006-08-02 13:53:55 +0000548- Correction of patch #1455898: In the mbcs decoder, set final=False
549 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
550
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000551- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or
552 KeyboardInterrupt.
553
Tim Peters4643c2f2006-08-10 22:45:34 +0000554- Bug #1525866: Don't copy directory stat times in
Martin v. Löwis4e678382006-07-30 13:00:31 +0000555 shutil.copytree on Windows
556
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000557- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
558 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
559
Tim Peterscbdd3502006-09-05 01:47:53 +0000560- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000561 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,
Fred Drakefbdeaad2006-07-29 16:56:15 +0000562 #1513611, and probably others.
563
Georg Brandledd9b0d2006-07-29 09:33:26 +0000564- Bug #1441397: The compiler module now recognizes module and function
565 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
566
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000567- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
568 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
569 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
570 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
571 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
572
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000573- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept
Martin v. Löwis1f30c372006-07-30 13:14:05 +0000574 in sync with sys.version_info[:3].
Martin v. Löwis997ceff2006-07-27 06:38:16 +0000575
Martin v. Löwis9298eff2006-07-26 12:12:56 +0000576- Bug #978833: Really close underlying socket in _socketobject.close.
577
Georg Brandldb232dc2006-08-20 13:15:43 +0000578- Bug #1459963: urllib and urllib2 now normalize HTTP header names with
579 title().
Georg Brandl0619a322006-07-26 07:40:17 +0000580
Georg Brandlcf0c1722006-07-26 07:23:32 +0000581- Patch #1525766: In pkgutil.walk_packages, correctly pass the onerror callback
582 to recursive calls and call it with the failing package name.
583
Martin v. Löwis0b483032006-07-25 09:53:12 +0000584- Bug #1525817: Don't truncate short lines in IDLE's tool tips.
585
Georg Brandlc13c34c2006-07-24 14:09:56 +0000586- Patch #1515343: Fix printing of deprecated string exceptions with a
587 value in the traceback module.
588
Greg Ward48fae7a2006-07-23 16:05:51 +0000589- Resync optparse with Optik 1.5.3: minor tweaks for/to tests.
590
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000591- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
592
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000593- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
594 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
595 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
596 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
597 tuple pre-2.4.
598
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000599- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
600
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000601- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
602 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
603 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
604 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
605 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
606 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
607 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
608 charset and language parts).
609
610 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
611 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.

644 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
645
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000646- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was

669
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +0000670- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,

722
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000723- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
724 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
725 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
726 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
727 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
728 an extension.

775
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +0000776- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
777 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
778 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
779
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000780- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

790 now.
791
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +0000792Extension Modules
793-----------------

Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000795- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
796 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
797 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +0000798
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +0000799- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
800 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
801
802- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
803 on non-Windows platforms.
804
805- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
806 integer or long, without range checking.
807
808- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
809 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
810 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
811
812- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
813 with the --without-threads option.

830
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000831- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +0000832 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
833 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
834
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +0000835- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR

866Core and builtins
867-----------------
868
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +0000869- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
870 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
871 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
872
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +0000873- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
874 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
875
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +0000876- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
877
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000878- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +0000879 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000880
Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +0000881- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
882 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
883 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
884 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
885 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
886
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +0000887- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
888 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
889
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +0000890- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
891 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
892 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
893 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
894 requested.
895
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +0000896- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
897 away like they were in Python 2.4.
898
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +0000899- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
900 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
901 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
902
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +0000903- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
904 Unicode 4.1.
905
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +0000906- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
907 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
908 fewer open calls on startup.
909
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +0000910- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
911 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
912 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
913 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
914 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
915
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +0000916- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
917 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
918 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch

936
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +0000937- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
938 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
939 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
940 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.

945
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +0000946- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
947 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
948 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
949 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
950
951- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
952 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
953 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
954 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

985
986- Use Win32 API to implement os.{access,chdir,chmod,mkdir,remove,rename,rmdir,utime}.
987 As a result, these functions now raise WindowsError instead of OSError.
988
Tim Peters7a822da2006-05-25 21:50:17 +0000989- ``time.clock()`` on Win64 should use the high-performance Windows

991 Windows platforms).
992

1011 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
1012
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +00001013- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and

1053 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
1054 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
1055 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
1056 of the matching pair.

Martin v. Löwis3f767792006-06-04 19:36:28 +00001075- Patch #1359618: Speed up charmap encoder by using a trie structure
1076 for lookup.
1077
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001078- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1079 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1080 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1081 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1082 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.

1160-----------------
1161
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001162- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1163 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1164
1165 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1166 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1167 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne

1169 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1170
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001171- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1172
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001173- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1174 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1175 multiple times.
1176
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001177- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1178 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1179 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1180
1181- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1182 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1183
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001184- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1185 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1186 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001187 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001188 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001189
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001190 def __hash__(self):
1191 return id(self) # WRONG
1192
1193 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1194 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001195 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001196 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1197 necessarily so.
1198
1199- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001200 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001201 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001202 #1454844)
1203
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001204- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1205 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1206 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1207 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1208 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001209
Anthony Baxter51bcb682006-04-05 14:51:42 +00001210Extension Modules
1211-----------------
1212
Martin v. Löwis7e75f1a2006-04-15 08:35:59 +00001213- Patch #1191065: Fix preprocessor problems on systems where recvfrom
1214 is a macro.
1215
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00001216- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()
1217 fails with an error condition.
1218
Gregory P. Smith3adc4aa2006-04-13 19:19:01 +00001219- Fixed bsddb.db.DBError derived exceptions so they can be unpickled.
1220
1221- Bug #1117761: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1222 the cachesize parameter.
1223
1224- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1225 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
1226
1227- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3

1238 abusing errno.
1239
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00001240- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes
1241 a doctest to be skipped (the code is not run, and the expected output
1242 or exception is ignored).
1243

1323
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001324- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1325 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1326 the current Decimal context.
1327
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001328- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1329 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1330 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument
1331 passed is the maximum amount of memory for the tests to use.

1358-----------------
1359
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001360- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1361 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1362
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001363- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1364 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1365 end in .PYD.
1366
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001367- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1368 sys.stdout.encoding.
1369
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001370- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1371
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001372- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1373
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001374- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1375
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001376- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1377 5.4 and later versions.
1378
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001379- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1380 now gives a SyntaxError.
1381
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001382- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1383 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1384 (closes patch #1170323).
1385
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001386- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1387 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1388 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1389 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1390 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1391 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1392 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001393 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1394 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001395 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1396 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1397
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001398- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1399 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1400 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1401
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001402- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1403 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1404 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1405 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1406
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001407- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1408
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001409- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1410 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1411 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1412 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1413
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001414- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1415 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1416 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1417 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1418 absolute_import' is used.
1419
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001420- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1421 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1422 exceptions.
1423
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001424- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001425 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1426
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001427- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001428
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001429- Patch 1433928:
1430 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1431 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1432 KeyError.
1433
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001434- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1435 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1436 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001437 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001438 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1439 - The built-in file type.
1440 - The thread.LockType type.
1441 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1442 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1443 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001444
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001445- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1446 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1447
1448 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1449 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1450
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001451- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1452
1453- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1454 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1455 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1456 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1457 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001458
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001459- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1460 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1461 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1462
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001463- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1464 configure would break checking curses.h.
1465
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001466- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1467 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1468
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001469- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
1470
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00001471- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
1472
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001473- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1474
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001475- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1476 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1477
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001478- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001480 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1481
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001482- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1483 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001484 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001485
Hye-Shik Chang835b2432005-12-17 04:38:31 +00001486- Bug #1379994: Builtin unicode_escape and raw_unicode_escape codec
1487 now encodes backslash correctly.
1488

1490
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001491- Bug #1281408: Py_BuildValue now works correctly even with unsigned longs
Georg Brandlf06e30a2005-11-24 15:37:42 +00001492 and long longs.
1493
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001494- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001495 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001496 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001497
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001498- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1499 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1500 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1501 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1502 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1503
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001504- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

1523
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001524- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001525 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1526 was empty.
1527
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001528- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
1529 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
1530
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001531- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is

1548
Barry Warsawe2eca0b2005-08-15 18:14:19 +00001549- SF bug #900092: When tracing (e.g. for hotshot), restore 'return' events for
1550 exceptions that cause a function to exit.
1551
Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001552- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1553 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1554 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1555
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001556- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1557
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00001558- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
1559 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1560
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001561- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1562 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1563 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001564 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001565 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1566 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1567 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1568 realloc.
1569
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001570- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when
1571 attempting to convert a large float to an int in os.utime().
1572
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001573- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1574 like their int counterparts.
1575
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001576- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1577 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1578 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1579 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
1580 for a longer write-up of the problem).
1581
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001582- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1583 serializing floats.
1584
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001585- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1586 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1587 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1588
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001589- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1590 278.
1591
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001592- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1593 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1594 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1595 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001596 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001597 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001598 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001599
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001600- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1601 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1602 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1603 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1604
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001605- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1606 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1607 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1608 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1609 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1610
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001611- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1612 disabled caused a crash.
1613
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001614- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1615 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1616
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001617- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this
Anthony Baxter12b6f6c2005-03-29 13:36:16 +00001618 fixes the crash seen in bug #1165761

1621
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001622- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00001623 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
1624 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
1625 (thanks to logistix for that added support).
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001626

1639
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001640- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00001641 an ferror() call.
1642
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00001643- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in

Jeremy Hyltonab630502005-02-04 18:44:06 +00001654- The parser did not complain about future statements in illegal
1655 positions. It once again reports a syntax error if a future
1656 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
1657
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00001658- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a
1659 unicode instance if the argument is not an instance of basestring and
1660 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
1661
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00001662- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
1663 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
1664 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
1665 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
1666 the same thread id).

Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001878 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00001879 module will not be built.

1906 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
1907 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
1908 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
1909 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
1910 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
1911 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

2185
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002186- Enhancements to the csv module:
2187
2188 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002189 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002190 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002191 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2192 reporting.
2193 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2194 dictates.
2195 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002196 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002197 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002198 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2199 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002200 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2201 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002202 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002203 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2204 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2205 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2206 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2207 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2208 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2209 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2210 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2211 without first creating a dialect class.
2212 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2213 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2214 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002215 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002216 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2217 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002218 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2219 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2220 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2221 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002222 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2223 This has been fixed.
2224
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002225- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2226 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2227 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2228 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2229
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002230- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2231

2233 (Bug #951915).
2234
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002235- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2236 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2237 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002238 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002239
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00002240- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
2241
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00002242- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
2243 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
2244
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00002245- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.

2252
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00002253- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
2254
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002255- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2256 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2257 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2258
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002259- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002260 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002261
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002262- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
2263 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
2264 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2265
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002266- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
2267 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
2268 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00002269
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00002270- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The
2271 reconvert module now has some simple documentation.
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002272
Walter Dörwaldaf3b39a2005-02-18 13:22:43 +00002273- ``UserString.MutableString`` now supports negative indices in
2274 ``__setitem__`` and ``__delitem__``
2275
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002276- Bug #1149508: ``textwrap`` now handles hyphenated numbers (eg. "2004-03-05")
2277 correctly.
2278
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002279- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2280 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2281 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2282 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2283 between two lines.
2284
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002285- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2286 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2287 handlers.
2288
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002289- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002290 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2291 encoding instead of a unicode string.
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002292
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00002293- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than
2294 considering it exactly like a '*'.

2297 ``encodings.aliases``.
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00002298
Walter Dörwald09f0dd52005-11-21 19:10:07 +00002299- ` uu.encode()`` and ``uu.decode()`` now support unicode filenames.
2300
Gustavo Niemeyer548148812006-01-31 18:34:13 +00002301- Patch #1413711: Certain patterns of differences were making difflib
2302 touch the recursion limit.
2303
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002304- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
2305 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002306 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2307 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2308 special classes that use unicode.

2334
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00002335- EXTRA_CFLAGS has been introduced as an environment variable to hold compiler
2336 flags that change binary compatibility. Changes were also made to
2337 distutils.sysconfig to also use the environment variable when used during
Martin v. Löwisd7c795e2005-04-25 07:14:03 +00002338 compilation of the interpreter and of C extensions through distutils.
Brett Cannon08cd5982005-04-24 22:26:38 +00002339
Bob Ippolitoed233462005-03-29 13:47:59 +00002340- SF patch 1171735: Darwin 8's headers are anal about POSIX compliance,
2341 and linking has changed (prebinding is now deprecated, and libcc_dynamic
2342 no longer exists). This configure patch makes things right.

Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00002344- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
2345
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002346- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
2347 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
2348
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002349- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2350 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2351 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2352 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2353 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2354 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2355 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2356 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2357
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002358- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2359 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2360 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
2361 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

2364-----
2365
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002366- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2367 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2368 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2369 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2370 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2371 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2372 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2373 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2374 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2375 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2376
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002377- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.
2378
Raymond Hettinger66517482004-12-03 11:45:13 +00002379- Removed PyRange_New().
2380
Walter Dörwaldd1c1e102005-10-06 20:29:57 +00002381- Patch #1313939: PyUnicode_DecodeCharmap() accepts a unicode string as the
2382 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
2383 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
2384 mappings.
