Merge r6087:

Changes for AIX5.  No surprises here.  New stuff:

- generates automake symbols of name VGP_platform and VGO_os, 
  whereas previously it just made VG_platform

- Do checks to enable building MPI wrapper library for both the
  primary and secondary target.
