philippe454bd962014-09-17 20:57:54 +00001Release 3.11.0 (?? ????????? 201?)
2~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
3Release 3.11.0 is under development, not yet released.
4
5* ================== PLATFORM CHANGES =================
6
florian92b33b52014-12-08 14:03:00 +00007* s390x: It is now required for the host to have the long displacement
8 facility. The oldest supported machine model is z990.
9
philippe9b2ec0b2015-06-18 21:31:51 +000010* x86: on an SSE2 only host, Valgrind in 32 bits now claims to be a Pentium 4.
11 3.10.1 was wrongly claiming to be a CORE 2, which is SSSE3.
12
philippe454bd962014-09-17 20:57:54 +000013* ==================== TOOL CHANGES ====================
14
15* Memcheck:
16
philippe868bfa22015-03-07 19:20:12 +000017* Massif:
philippe328d6622015-05-25 17:24:27 +000018 - New monitor command 'all_snapshots <filename>' that dumps all snapshots
19 taken so far.
philippe868bfa22015-03-07 19:20:12 +000020
philippe454bd962014-09-17 20:57:54 +000021* Helgrind:
philippe328d6622015-05-25 17:24:27 +000022 - The default value for --conflict-cache-size=N has been doubled to 2000000.
23 Users that were not using the default value should preferrably also
24 double the value they give.
25 The default was updaded due to the changes in the full history
26 implementation. Doubling the value gives in average a slightly more
27 complete history and uses similar memory (or significantly less memory
28 in the worst case) than the previous Helgrind version.
29
30 - Significant memory improvement and moderate speed improvement for
31 --history-level=full for applications accessing a lot of memory with
32 many different stacktraces.
33
34 - The helgrind monitor command 'info locks' now accepts an optional
35 argument 'lock_addr', to only show information about the lock at the
36 given address.
37
38 - When using --history-level=full, the new helgrind monitor command
39 'accesshistory <addr> [<len>]' will show the recorded accesses for
40 <len> (or 1) bytes at <addr>.
philippe454bd962014-09-17 20:57:54 +000041
42* Callgrind:
43
44* ==================== OTHER CHANGES ====================
45
florianb9749a52015-07-24 11:50:12 +000046* The command line options --db-attach and --db-command have been removed.
47 They were deprecated in 3.10.0
48
philippef6185652015-05-17 18:31:55 +000049* When a process dies due to a signal, Valgrind now shows the signal
50 and the stacktrace at default verbosity (i.e. verbosity 1).
51
philippef7ec77f2014-11-24 17:46:41 +000052* Address description logic (used by memcheck and helgrind)
philippe5b684dd2015-03-30 21:29:54 +000053 now describes addresses in anonymous segments, file mmap-ed
philipped0da9682014-12-28 17:30:22 +000054 segments, shared memory segments and the brk data segment.
philippef7ec77f2014-11-24 17:46:41 +000055
philippe7b3d3562014-11-12 19:43:29 +000056* Option --error-markers=<begin>,<end> can be used to mark
57 the begin/end of errors in textual output mode, to facilitate
58 searching/extracting errors in output files mixing valgrind
59 errors with program output.
60
philippe17040ab2015-03-12 22:53:18 +000061* New Option --max-threads=<number> can be used to change the
florian1e802b62015-02-13 19:08:26 +000062 number of threads valgrind can handle. The default is 500 threads
63 which should be more than enough for most applications.
64
philippe17040ab2015-03-12 22:53:18 +000065* New Option --valgrind-stacksize=<number> can be used to change
66 the size of the private thread stacks used by Valgrind.
67 Useful to reduce memory use or increase the stack size if Valgrind
68 segfaults due to stack exhausted.
69
philippe924c8522015-03-15 12:24:19 +000070* New Option --avg-transtab-entry-size=<number> can be used to tune
71 the size of the translation table sectors, either to gain memory
72 or to avoid too many retranslations.
73
florian7f793092015-03-10 20:48:07 +000074* Valgrind can be built with Intel's ICC compiler. The required
75 compiler version is 14.0 or later.
76
philippe5e94f052015-05-14 19:56:47 +000077* New and modified GDB server monitor features:
philippeb3014692015-05-17 13:38:25 +000078 - When a signal is reported in GDB, you can now use the GDB convenience
79 variable $_siginfo to examine detailed signal information.
80
81 - Valgrind gdbserver now allows the user to change the signal
82 to deliver to the process. So, use 'signal SIGNAL' to continue execution
83 with SIGNAL instead of the signal reported to GDB. Use 'signal 0' to
84 continue without passing the signal to the process.
philippe5e94f052015-05-14 19:56:47 +000085
86 - With recent GDB (>= 7.9.50.20150514-cvs), the command 'target remote'
87 will automatically load the executable file of the process running
88 under Valgrind. This means you do not need to specify the executable
89 file yourself, GDB will discover it itself.
90 See GDB documentation about 'qXfer:exec-file:read' packet for more info.
91
philippe454bd962014-09-17 20:57:54 +000092* ==================== FIXED BUGS ====================
93
94The following bugs have been fixed or resolved. Note that "n-i-bz"
95stands for "not in bugzilla" -- that is, a bug that was reported to us
96but never got a bugzilla entry. We encourage you to file bugs in
97bugzilla (https://bugs.kde.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=valgrind) rather
98than mailing the developers (or mailing lists) directly -- bugs that
99are not entered into bugzilla tend to get forgotten about or ignored.
100
101To see details of a given bug, visit
102 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=XXXXXX
103where XXXXXX is the bug number as listed below.

285Release 3.10.1 (25 November 2014)
286~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2873.10.1 is a bug fix release. It fixes various bugs reported in 3.10.0
288and backports fixes for all reported missing AArch64 ARMv8 instructions
289and syscalls from the trunk. If you package or deliver 3.10.0 for others
290to use, you might want to consider upgrading to 3.10.1 instead.
291
292The following bugs have been fixed or resolved. Note that "n-i-bz"
293stands for "not in bugzilla" -- that is, a bug that was reported to us
294but never got a bugzilla entry. We encourage you to file bugs in
295bugzilla (https://bugs.kde.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=valgrind) rather
296than mailing the developers (or mailing lists) directly -- bugs that
297are not entered into bugzilla tend to get forgotten about or ignored.

sewardj218f6512014-09-02 09:38:27 +0000381* ================== DEPRECATED FEATURES =================
382
383* --db-attach is now deprecated and will be removed in the next
384 valgrind feature release. The built-in GDB server capabilities are
385 superior and should be used instead. Learn more here:
386 http://valgrind.org/docs/manual/manual-core-adv.html#manual-core-adv.gdbserver
387
philippea501f122013-12-01 12:42:30 +0000388* ==================== TOOL CHANGES ====================
389
sewardjc5fc8662014-03-20 23:00:09 +0000390* Memcheck:
sewardj218f6512014-09-02 09:38:27 +0000391
392 - Client code can now selectively disable and re-enable reporting of
393 invalid address errors in specific ranges using the new client
394 requests VALGRIND_DISABLE_ADDR_ERROR_REPORTING_IN_RANGE and
395 VALGRIND_ENABLE_ADDR_ERROR_REPORTING_IN_RANGE.
396
397 - Leak checker: there is a new leak check heuristic called
398 "length64". This is used to detect interior pointers pointing 8
399 bytes inside a block, on the assumption that the first 8 bytes
400 holds the value "block size - 8". This is used by
401 sqlite3MemMalloc, for example.
402
403 - Checking of system call parameters: if a syscall parameter
404 (e.g. bind struct sockaddr, sendmsg struct msghdr, ...) has
405 several fields not initialised, an error is now reported for each
406 field. Previously, an error was reported only for the first
407 uninitialised field.
408
409 - Mismatched alloc/free checking: a new flag
410 --show-mismatched-frees=no|yes [yes] makes it possible to turn off
411 such checks if necessary.
sewardjc5fc8662014-03-20 23:00:09 +0000412
philippea501f122013-12-01 12:42:30 +0000413* Helgrind:
sewardj218f6512014-09-02 09:38:27 +0000414
415 - Improvements to error messages:
416
417 o Race condition error message involving heap allocated blocks also
418 show the thread number that allocated the raced-on block.
419
420 o All locks referenced by an error message are now announced.
421 Previously, some error messages only showed the lock addresses.
422
423 o The message indicating where a lock was first observed now also
424 describes the address/location of the lock.
425
426 - Helgrind now understands the Ada task termination rules and
427 creates a happens-before relationship between a terminated task
428 and its master. This avoids some false positives and avoids a big
429 memory leak when a lot of Ada tasks are created and terminated.
philippea1369f82014-09-02 20:59:13 +0000430 The interceptions are only activated with forthcoming releases of
philippe0c12c462014-08-20 20:53:07 +0000431 gnatpro >= 7.3.0w-20140611 and gcc >= 5.0.
sewardj218f6512014-09-02 09:38:27 +0000432
433 - A new GDB server monitor command "info locks" giving the list of
434 locks, their location, and their status.
philippea501f122013-12-01 12:42:30 +0000435
philippecffe2a52014-01-11 13:56:48 +0000436* Callgrind:
sewardj218f6512014-09-02 09:38:27 +0000437
philippecffe2a52014-01-11 13:56:48 +0000438 - callgrind_control now supports the --vgdb-prefix argument,
439 which is needed if valgrind was started with this same argument.
440
philippea501f122013-12-01 12:42:30 +0000441* ==================== OTHER CHANGES ====================
442
sewardj47c6d142014-09-12 09:22:36 +0000443* Unwinding through inlined function calls. Stack unwinding can now
444 make use of Dwarf3 inlined-unwind information if it is available.
445 The practical effect is that inlined calls become visible in stack
446 traces. The suppression matching machinery has been adjusted
447 accordingly. This is controlled by the new option
448 --read-inline-info=yes|no. Currently this is enabled by default
449 only on Linux and Android targets and only for the tools Memcheck,
450 Helgrind and DRD.
philippe67e1ad22014-06-15 15:54:58 +0000451
sewardj218f6512014-09-02 09:38:27 +0000452* Valgrind can now read EXIDX unwind information on 32-bit ARM
453 targets. If an object contains both CFI and EXIDX unwind
454 information, Valgrind will prefer the CFI over the EXIDX. This
455 facilitates unwinding through system libraries on arm-android
456 targets.
philippe18d6f4e2014-05-22 23:48:24 +0000457
sewardj218f6512014-09-02 09:38:27 +0000458* Address description logic has been improved and is now common
459 between Memcheck and Helgrind, resulting in better address
460 descriptions for some kinds of error messages.
philippe8587b542013-12-15 20:24:43 +0000461
sewardj218f6512014-09-02 09:38:27 +0000462* Error messages about dubious arguments (eg, to malloc or calloc) are
463 output like other errors. This means that they can be suppressed
464 and they have a stack trace.
philippe5c5b8fc2014-05-06 20:15:55 +0000465
florianc9d75822014-06-30 21:04:16 +0000466* The C++ demangler has been updated for better C++11 support.
467
sewardj218f6512014-09-02 09:38:27 +0000468* New and modified GDB server monitor features:
florian7b6899d2014-07-13 14:41:55 +0000469
sewardj218f6512014-09-02 09:38:27 +0000470 - Thread local variables/storage (__thread) can now be displayed.
philippe59e1f3c2014-07-14 21:20:57 +0000471
sewardj218f6512014-09-02 09:38:27 +0000472 - The GDB server monitor command "v.info location <address>"
473 displays information about an address. The information produced
474 depends on the tool and on the options given to valgrind.
475 Possibly, the following are described: global variables, local
476 (stack) variables, allocated or freed blocks, ...
sewardjade2edd2014-07-31 14:25:29 +0000477
sewardj218f6512014-09-02 09:38:27 +0000478 - The option "--vgdb-stop-at=event1,event2,..." allows the user to
479 ask the GDB server to stop at the start of program execution, at
480 the end of the program execution and on Valgrind internal errors.
481
482 - A new monitor command "v.info stats" shows various Valgrind core
483 and tool statistics.
484
485 - A new monitor command "v.set hostvisibility" allows the GDB server
486 to provide access to Valgrind internal host status/memory.
487
488* A new option "--aspace-minaddr=<address>" can in some situations
489 allow the use of more memory by decreasing the address above which
490 Valgrind maps memory. It can also be used to solve address
491 conflicts with system libraries by increasing the default value.
492 See user manual for details.
493
494* The amount of memory used by Valgrind to store debug info (unwind
495 info, line number information and symbol data) has been
496 significantly reduced, even though Valgrind now reads more
497 information in order to support unwinding of inlined function calls.
498
499* Dwarf3 handling with --read-var-info=yes has been improved:
500
501 - Ada and C struct containing VLAs no longer cause a "bad DIE" error
502
503 - Code compiled with
504 -ffunction-sections -fdata-sections -Wl,--gc-sections
505 no longer causes assertion failures.
506
507* Improved checking for the --sim-hints= and --kernel-variant=
508 options. Unknown strings are now detected and reported to the user
509 as a usage error.
510
511* The semantics of stack start/end boundaries in the valgrind.h
512 VALGRIND_STACK_REGISTER client request has been clarified and
513 documented. The convention is that start and end are respectively
514 the lowest and highest addressable bytes of the stack.

philippea501f122013-12-01 12:42:30 +0000516* ==================== FIXED BUGS ====================
517
518The following bugs have been fixed or resolved. Note that "n-i-bz"
519stands for "not in bugzilla" -- that is, a bug that was reported to us
520but never got a bugzilla entry. We encourage you to file bugs in
521bugzilla (https://bugs.kde.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=valgrind) rather
522than mailing the developers (or mailing lists) directly -- bugs that
523are not entered into bugzilla tend to get forgotten about or ignored.
524

philippe2d75ea22012-08-16 19:40:52 +0000729* ==================== TOOL CHANGES ====================
sewardj4c7254d2013-11-29 23:08:28 +0000730
philippe2193a7c2012-12-08 17:54:16 +0000731* Memcheck:
732
sewardj4c7254d2013-11-29 23:08:28 +0000733 - Improvements in handling of vectorised code, leading to
734 significantly fewer false error reports. You need to use the flag
735 --partial-loads-ok=yes to get the benefits of these changes.
philippe2d75ea22012-08-16 19:40:52 +0000736
sewardj4c7254d2013-11-29 23:08:28 +0000737 - Better control over the leak checker. It is now possible to
738 specify which leak kinds (definite/indirect/possible/reachable)
739 should be displayed, which should be regarded as errors, and which
740 should be suppressed by a given leak suppression. This is done
741 using the options --show-leak-kinds=kind1,kind2,..,
742 --errors-for-leak-kinds=kind1,kind2,.. and an optional
743 "match-leak-kinds:" line in suppression entries, respectively.
philippeab1fce92013-09-29 13:47:32 +0000744
sewardj4c7254d2013-11-29 23:08:28 +0000745 Note that generated leak suppressions contain this new line and
746 are therefore more specific than in previous releases. To get the
747 same behaviour as previous releases, remove the "match-leak-kinds:"
748 line from generated suppressions before using them.
philippe8617b5b2013-01-12 19:53:08 +0000749
sewardj4c7254d2013-11-29 23:08:28 +0000750 - Reduced "possible leak" reports from the leak checker by the use
751 of better heuristics. The available heuristics provide detection
752 of valid interior pointers to std::stdstring, to new[] allocated
753 arrays with elements having destructors and to interior pointers
754 pointing to an inner part of a C++ object using multiple
755 inheritance. They can be selected individually using the
756 option --leak-check-heuristics=heur1,heur2,...
757
758 - Better control of stacktrace acquisition for heap-allocated
759 blocks. Using the --keep-stacktraces option, it is possible to
760 control independently whether a stack trace is acquired for each
761 allocation and deallocation. This can be used to create better
762 "use after free" errors or to decrease Valgrind's resource
763 consumption by recording less information.
764
765 - Better reporting of leak suppression usage. The list of used
766 suppressions (shown when the -v option is given) now shows, for
767 each leak suppressions, how many blocks and bytes it suppressed
768 during the last leak search.
769
770* Helgrind:
771
772 - False errors resulting from the use of statically initialised
773 mutexes and condition variables (PTHREAD_MUTEX_INITIALISER, etc)
774 have been removed.
775
776 - False errors resulting from the use of pthread_cond_waits that
777 timeout, have been removed.
philippe4e32d672013-10-17 22:10:41 +0000778
philippe2d75ea22012-08-16 19:40:52 +0000779* ==================== OTHER CHANGES ====================
780
sewardj4c7254d2013-11-29 23:08:28 +0000781* Some attempt to tune Valgrind's space requirements to the expected
782 capabilities of the target:
philippe8e1bee42013-10-18 00:08:20 +0000783
sewardj4c7254d2013-11-29 23:08:28 +0000784 - The default size of the translation cache has been reduced from 8
785 sectors to 6 on Android platforms, since each sector occupies
786 about 40MB when using Memcheck.
philippe46207652013-01-20 17:11:58 +0000787
sewardj4c7254d2013-11-29 23:08:28 +0000788 - The default size of the translation cache has been increased to 16
789 sectors on all other platforms, reflecting the fact that large
790 applications require instrumentation and storage of huge amounts
791 of code. For similar reasons, the number of memory mapped
792 segments that can be tracked has been increased by a factor of 6.
philippe46207652013-01-20 17:11:58 +0000793
sewardj4c7254d2013-11-29 23:08:28 +0000794 - In all cases, the maximum number of sectors in the translation
795 cache can be controlled by the new flag --num-transtab-sectors.
philippe6ec8d632013-01-23 22:10:28 +0000796
sewardj4c7254d2013-11-29 23:08:28 +0000797* Changes in how debug info (line numbers, etc) is read:
philippe02ea4132013-09-04 21:42:43 +0000798
sewardj4c7254d2013-11-29 23:08:28 +0000799 - Valgrind no longer temporarily mmaps the entire object to read
800 from it. Instead, reading is done through a small fixed sized
801 buffer. This avoids virtual memory usage spikes when Valgrind
802 reads debuginfo from large shared objects.
philippe6ec8d632013-01-23 22:10:28 +0000803
sewardj4c7254d2013-11-29 23:08:28 +0000804 - A new experimental remote debug info server. Valgrind can read
805 debug info from a different machine (typically, a build host)
806 where debuginfo objects are stored. This can save a lot of time
807 and hassle when running Valgrind on resource-constrained targets
808 (phones, tablets) when the full debuginfo objects are stored
809 somewhere else. This is enabled by the --debuginfo-server=
810 option.
philippe6ec8d632013-01-23 22:10:28 +0000811
sewardj4c7254d2013-11-29 23:08:28 +0000812 - Consistency checking between main and debug objects can be
813 disabled using the --allow-mismatched-debuginfo option.
philippe4e32d672013-10-17 22:10:41 +0000814
sewardj4c7254d2013-11-29 23:08:28 +0000815* Stack unwinding by stack scanning, on ARM. Unwinding by stack
816 scanning can recover stack traces in some cases when the normal
817 unwind mechanisms fail. Stack scanning is best described as "a
818 nasty, dangerous and misleading hack" and so is disabled by default.
819 Use --unw-stack-scan-thresh and --unw-stack-scan-frames to enable
820 and control it.
sewardj82792172013-09-19 23:04:03 +0000821
sewardj4c7254d2013-11-29 23:08:28 +0000822* Detection and merging of recursive stack frame cycles. When your
823 program has recursive algorithms, this limits the memory used by
824 Valgrind for recorded stack traces and avoids recording
825 uninteresting repeated calls. This is controlled by the command
826 line option --merge-recursive-frame and by the monitor command
827 "v.set merge-recursive-frames".
sewardj82792172013-09-19 23:04:03 +0000828
sewardj4c7254d2013-11-29 23:08:28 +0000829* File name and line numbers for used suppressions. The list of used
830 suppressions (shown when the -v option is given) now shows, for each
831 used suppression, the file name and line number where the suppression
832 is defined.
sewardj82792172013-09-19 23:04:03 +0000833
sewardj4c7254d2013-11-29 23:08:28 +0000834* New and modified GDB server monitor features:
sewardj82792172013-09-19 23:04:03 +0000835
sewardj4c7254d2013-11-29 23:08:28 +0000836 - valgrind.h has a new client request, VALGRIND_MONITOR_COMMAND,
837 that can be used to execute gdbserver monitor commands from the
838 client program.
839
840 - A new monitor command, "v.info open_fds", that gives the list of
841 open file descriptors and additional details.
842
843 - An optional message in the "v.info n_errs_found" monitor command,
844 for example "v.info n_errs_found test 1234 finished", allowing a
845 comment string to be added to the process output, perhaps for the
846 purpose of separating errors of different tests or test phases.
847
848 - A new monitor command "v.info execontext" that shows information
849 about the stack traces recorded by Valgrind.
850
851 - A new monitor command "v.do expensive_sanity_check_general" to run
852 some internal consistency checks.
853
854* New flag --sigill-diagnostics to control whether a diagnostic
855 message is printed when the JIT encounters an instruction it can't
856 translate. The actual behavior -- delivery of SIGILL to the
857 application -- is unchanged.
858
859* The maximum amount of memory that Valgrind can use on 64 bit targets
860 has been increased from 32GB to 64GB. This should make it possible
861 to run applications on Memcheck that natively require up to about 35GB.
sewardj82792172013-09-19 23:04:03 +0000862
philippe2d75ea22012-08-16 19:40:52 +0000863* ==================== FIXED BUGS ====================
864
865The following bugs have been fixed or resolved. Note that "n-i-bz"
866stands for "not in bugzilla" -- that is, a bug that was reported to us
867but never got a bugzilla entry. We encourage you to file bugs in
868bugzilla (https://bugs.kde.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=valgrind) rather
869than mailing the developers (or mailing lists) directly -- bugs that
870are not entered into bugzilla tend to get forgotten about or ignored.

sewardj328f9182012-09-18 07:03:27 +00001073Release 3.8.1 (19 September 2012)
1074~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
10753.8.1 is a bug fix release. It fixes some assertion failures in 3.8.0
1076that occur moderately frequently in real use cases, adds support for
1077some missing instructions on ARM, and fixes a deadlock condition on
1078MacOSX. If you package or deliver 3.8.0 for others to use, you might
1079want to consider upgrading to 3.8.1 instead.
1080
1081The following bugs have been fixed or resolved. Note that "n-i-bz"
1082stands for "not in bugzilla" -- that is, a bug that was reported to us
1083but never got a bugzilla entry. We encourage you to file bugs in
1084bugzilla (https://bugs.kde.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=valgrind) rather
1085than mailing the developers (or mailing lists) directly -- bugs that
1086are not entered into bugzilla tend to get forgotten about or ignored.

sewardj1c41a1a2012-08-09 15:06:36 +00001132Release 3.8.0 (10 August 2012)
sewardj31e8f542012-08-05 14:57:38 +00001133~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
sewardj8ab8a8e2012-08-07 14:54:17 +000011343.8.0 is a feature release with many improvements and the usual
1135collection of bug fixes.
sewardj31e8f542012-08-05 14:57:38 +00001136
1137This release supports X86/Linux, AMD64/Linux, ARM/Linux, PPC32/Linux,
1138PPC64/Linux, S390X/Linux, MIPS/Linux, ARM/Android, X86/Android,
1139X86/MacOSX 10.6/10.7 and AMD64/MacOSX 10.6/10.7. Support for recent
1140distros and toolchain components (glibc 2.16, gcc 4.7) has been added.
1141There is initial support for MacOSX 10.8, but it is not usable for
1142serious work at present.

florian8dc79ce2011-12-10 16:00:25 +00001144* ================== PLATFORM CHANGES =================
1145
sewardj31e8f542012-08-05 14:57:38 +00001146* Support for MIPS32 platforms running Linux. Valgrind has been
1147 tested on MIPS32 and MIPS32r2 platforms running different Debian
1148 Squeeze and MeeGo distributions. Both little-endian and big-endian
sewardj10856a02012-08-05 15:24:12 +00001149 cores are supported. The tools Memcheck, Massif and Lackey have
1150 been tested and are known to work. See README.mips for more details.
1151
sewardj8ab8a8e2012-08-07 14:54:17 +00001152* Preliminary support for Android running on x86.
sewardj10856a02012-08-05 15:24:12 +00001153
1154* Preliminary (as-yet largely unusable) support for MacOSX 10.8.
sewardj31e8f542012-08-05 14:57:38 +00001155
1156* Support for Intel AVX instructions and for AES instructions. This
1157 support is available only for 64 bit code.
1158
sewardj10856a02012-08-05 15:24:12 +00001159* Support for POWER Decimal Floating Point instructions.
philippe5d5dd8e2012-08-05 00:08:25 +00001160
florian8dc79ce2011-12-10 16:00:25 +00001161* ==================== TOOL CHANGES ====================
1162
sewardj10856a02012-08-05 15:24:12 +00001163* Non-libc malloc implementations are now supported. This is useful
1164 for tools that replace malloc (Memcheck, Massif, DRD, Helgrind).
1165 Using the new option --soname-synonyms, such tools can be informed
1166 that the malloc implementation is either linked statically into the
1167 executable, or is present in some other shared library different
1168 from libc.so. This makes it possible to process statically linked
1169 programs, and programs using other malloc libraries, for example
1170 TCMalloc or JEMalloc.
1171
1172* For tools that provide their own replacement for malloc et al, the
1173 option --redzone-size=<number> allows users to specify the size of
1174 the padding blocks (redzones) added before and after each client
1175 allocated block. Smaller redzones decrease the memory needed by
1176 Valgrind. Bigger redzones increase the chance to detect blocks
1177 overrun or underrun. Prior to this change, the redzone size was
1178 hardwired to 16 bytes in Memcheck.
philippe1e470b52012-05-11 19:33:46 +00001179
philippe84234902012-01-14 13:53:13 +00001180* Memcheck:
1181
1182 - The leak_check GDB server monitor command now can
1183 control the maximum nr of loss records to output.
1184
philippe1e470b52012-05-11 19:33:46 +00001185 - Reduction of memory use for applications allocating
philippe6643e962012-01-17 21:16:30 +00001186 many blocks and/or having many partially defined bytes.
1187
philippea22f59d2012-01-26 23:13:52 +00001188 - Addition of GDB server monitor command 'block_list' that lists
1189 the addresses/sizes of the blocks of a leak search loss record.
1190
1191 - Addition of GDB server monitor command 'who_points_at' that lists
1192 the locations pointing at a block.
philippe6643e962012-01-17 21:16:30 +00001193
sewardj10856a02012-08-05 15:24:12 +00001194 - If a redzone size > 0 is given, VALGRIND_MALLOCLIKE_BLOCK now will
1195 detect an invalid access of these redzones, by marking them
1196 noaccess. Similarly, if a redzone size is given for a memory
1197 pool, VALGRIND_MEMPOOL_ALLOC will mark the redzones no access.
1198 This still allows to find some bugs if the user has forgotten to
1199 mark the pool superblock noaccess.
philippe11cc9ce2012-03-11 17:59:00 +00001200
sewardj10856a02012-08-05 15:24:12 +00001201 - Performance of memory leak check has been improved, especially in
1202 cases where there are many leaked blocks and/or many suppression
1203 rules used to suppress leak reports.
philippe57a16a22012-07-18 22:26:51 +00001204
sewardje060f6a2012-08-05 16:14:02 +00001205 - Reduced noise (false positive) level on MacOSX 10.6/10.7, due to
philippe46217292012-08-05 21:35:02 +00001206 more precise analysis, which is important for LLVM/Clang
sewardje060f6a2012-08-05 16:14:02 +00001207 generated code. This is at the cost of somewhat reduced
1208 performance. Note there is no change to analysis precision or
1209 costs on Linux targets.
1210
bartc3009f82012-06-16 19:02:25 +00001211* DRD:
1212
bartc3009f82012-06-16 19:02:25 +00001213 - Added even more facilities that can help finding the cause of a data
1214 race, namely the command-line option --ptrace-addr and the macro
1215 DRD_STOP_TRACING_VAR(x). More information can be found in the manual.
1216
barta7a57882012-08-04 09:19:11 +00001217 - Fixed a subtle bug that could cause false positive data race reports.
1218
florian8dc79ce2011-12-10 16:00:25 +00001219* ==================== OTHER CHANGES ====================
1220
1221* The C++ demangler has been updated so as to work well with C++
philippe172a3bb2012-03-16 15:03:08 +00001222 compiled by up to at least g++ 4.6.
florianff7efa62011-11-16 03:59:49 +00001223
bart1e451642012-07-28 13:06:45 +00001224* Tool developers can make replacement/wrapping more flexible thanks
sewardj10856a02012-08-05 15:24:12 +00001225 to the new option --soname-synonyms. This was reported above, but
1226 in fact is very general and applies to all function
1227 replacement/wrapping, not just to malloc-family functions.
philippe1e470b52012-05-11 19:33:46 +00001228
sewardj10856a02012-08-05 15:24:12 +00001229* Round-robin scheduling of threads can be selected, using the new
1230 option --fair-sched= yes. Prior to this change, the pipe-based
1231 thread serialisation mechanism (which is still the default) could
1232 give very unfair scheduling. --fair-sched=yes improves
1233 responsiveness of interactive multithreaded applications, and
1234 improves repeatability of results from the thread checkers Helgrind
1235 and DRD.
philippe236a71a2012-02-22 20:23:29 +00001236
sewardj10856a02012-08-05 15:24:12 +00001237* For tool developers: support to run Valgrind on Valgrind has been
1238 improved. We can now routinely Valgrind on Helgrind or Memcheck.
philippe72faf102012-03-11 22:24:03 +00001239
philippeede2d6c2012-03-14 21:27:35 +00001240* gdbserver now shows the float shadow registers as integer
1241 rather than float values, as the shadow values are mostly
1242 used as bit patterns.
1243
florian7711f9e2012-06-29 21:20:52 +00001244* Increased limit for the --num-callers command line flag to 500.
1245
philippe02ccd562012-08-05 17:35:17 +00001246* Performance improvements for error matching when there are many

1264
1265The following bugs have been fixed or resolved. Note that "n-i-bz"
1266stands for "not in bugzilla" -- that is, a bug that was reported to us
1267but never got a bugzilla entry. We encourage you to file bugs in
sewardj31e8f542012-08-05 14:57:38 +00001268bugzilla (https://bugs.kde.org/enter_bug.cgi?product=valgrind) rather
1269than mailing the developers (or mailing lists) directly -- bugs that
1270are not entered into bugzilla tend to get forgotten about or ignored.

sewardj62b0d402011-11-09 23:42:41 +00001432Release 3.7.0 (5 November 2011)
1433~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
sewardj469b8362011-10-23 10:05:47 +000014343.7.0 is a feature release with many significant improvements and the
1435usual collection of bug fixes.
sewardjdc873c02011-07-24 16:02:33 +00001436
sewardj469b8362011-10-23 10:05:47 +00001437This release supports X86/Linux, AMD64/Linux, ARM/Linux, PPC32/Linux,
1438PPC64/Linux, S390X/Linux, ARM/Android, X86/Darwin and AMD64/Darwin.
1439Support for recent distros and toolchain components (glibc 2.14, gcc
14404.6, MacOSX 10.7) has been added.
1441
1442* ================== PLATFORM CHANGES =================
1443
1444* Support for IBM z/Architecture (s390x) running Linux. Valgrind can
1445 analyse 64-bit programs running on z/Architecture. Most user space
1446 instructions up to and including z10 are supported. Valgrind has
1447 been tested extensively on z9, z10, and z196 machines running SLES
1448 10/11, RedHat 5/6m, and Fedora. The Memcheck and Massif tools are
1449 known to work well. Callgrind, Helgrind, and DRD work reasonably
1450 well on z9 and later models. See README.s390 for more details.
1451
1452* Preliminary support for MacOSX 10.7 and XCode 4. Both 32- and
1453 64-bit processes are supported. Some complex threaded applications
1454 (Firefox) are observed to hang when run as 32 bit applications,
1455 whereas 64-bit versions run OK. The cause is unknown. Memcheck
1456 will likely report some false errors. In general, expect some rough
1457 spots. This release also supports MacOSX 10.6, but drops support
1458 for 10.5.
1459
1460* Preliminary support for Android (on ARM). Valgrind can now run
1461 large applications (eg, Firefox) on (eg) a Samsung Nexus S. See
1462 README.android for more details, plus instructions on how to get
1463 started.
1464
1465* Support for the IBM Power ISA 2.06 (Power7 instructions)
1466
1467* General correctness and performance improvements for ARM/Linux, and,
1468 by extension, ARM/Android.
1469
sewardj3bbaf482011-10-24 08:54:56 +00001470* Further solidification of support for SSE 4.2 in 64-bit mode. AVX
sewardj469b8362011-10-23 10:05:47 +00001471 instruction set support is under development but is not available in
1472 this release.
1473
1474* Support for AIX5 has been removed.
1475
1476* ==================== TOOL CHANGES ====================
1477
1478* Memcheck: some incremental changes:
1479
1480 - reduction of memory use in some circumstances
1481
1482 - improved handling of freed memory, which in some circumstances
1483 can cause detection of use-after-free that would previously have
1484 been missed
1485
1486 - fix of a longstanding bug that could cause false negatives (missed
1487 errors) in programs doing vector saturated narrowing instructions.
1488
1489* Helgrind: performance improvements and major memory use reductions,
1490 particularly for large, long running applications which perform many
1491 synchronisation (lock, unlock, etc) events. Plus many smaller
1492 changes:
1493
1494 - display of locksets for both threads involved in a race
1495
1496 - general improvements in formatting/clarity of error messages
1497
1498 - addition of facilities and documentation regarding annotation
1499 of thread safe reference counted C++ classes
1500
1501 - new flag --check-stack-refs=no|yes [yes], to disable race checking
1502 on thread stacks (a performance hack)
1503
1504 - new flag --free-is-write=no|yes [no], to enable detection of races
1505 where one thread accesses heap memory but another one frees it,
1506 without any coordinating synchronisation event
1507
1508* DRD: enabled XML output; added support for delayed thread deletion
1509 in order to detect races that occur close to the end of a thread
1510 (--join-list-vol); fixed a memory leak triggered by repeated client
1511 memory allocatation and deallocation; improved Darwin support.
1512
florian0f0ed672011-11-26 04:05:47 +00001513* exp-ptrcheck: this tool has been renamed to exp-sgcheck
1514
1515* exp-sgcheck: this tool has been reduced in scope so as to improve
sewardj469b8362011-10-23 10:05:47 +00001516 performance and remove checking that Memcheck does better.
1517 Specifically, the ability to check for overruns for stack and global
1518 arrays is unchanged, but the ability to check for overruns of heap
1519 blocks has been removed. The tool has accordingly been renamed to
1520 exp-sgcheck ("Stack and Global Array Checking").
1521
1522* ==================== OTHER CHANGES ====================
1523
1524* GDB server: Valgrind now has an embedded GDB server. That means it
1525 is possible to control a Valgrind run from GDB, doing all the usual
1526 things that GDB can do (single stepping, breakpoints, examining
1527 data, etc). Tool-specific functionality is also available. For
1528 example, it is possible to query the definedness state of variables
1529 or memory from within GDB when running Memcheck; arbitrarily large
1530 memory watchpoints are supported, etc. To use the GDB server, start
1531 Valgrind with the flag --vgdb-error=0 and follow the on-screen
1532 instructions.
1533
1534* Improved support for unfriendly self-modifying code: a new option
1535 --smc-check=all-non-file is available. This adds the relevant
1536 consistency checks only to code that originates in non-file-backed
1537 mappings. In effect this confines the consistency checking only to
1538 code that is or might be JIT generated, and avoids checks on code
1539 that must have been compiled ahead of time. This significantly
1540 improves performance on applications that generate code at run time.
1541
1542* It is now possible to build a working Valgrind using Clang-2.9 on
sewardj960eef22011-09-30 17:55:13 +00001543 Linux.
1544
sewardj469b8362011-10-23 10:05:47 +00001545* new client requests VALGRIND_{DISABLE,ENABLE}_ERROR_REPORTING.
1546 These enable and disable error reporting on a per-thread, and
1547 nestable, basis. This is useful for hiding errors in particularly
1548 troublesome pieces of code. The MPI wrapper library (libmpiwrap.c)
1549 now uses this facility.
sewardj960eef22011-09-30 17:55:13 +00001550
sewardj469b8362011-10-23 10:05:47 +00001551* Added the --mod-funcname option to cg_diff.
sewardjdc873c02011-07-24 16:02:33 +00001552
sewardj469b8362011-10-23 10:05:47 +00001553* ==================== FIXED BUGS ====================

sewardj520501d2011-10-23 09:09:54 +00001555The following bugs have been fixed or resolved. Note that "n-i-bz"
1556stands for "not in bugzilla" -- that is, a bug that was reported to us
1557but never got a bugzilla entry. We encourage you to file bugs in
1558bugzilla (http://bugs.kde.org/enter_valgrind_bug.cgi) rather than
1559mailing the developers (or mailing lists) directly -- bugs that are
1560not entered into bugzilla tend to get forgotten about or ignored.

1739~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
17403.6.1 is a bug fix release. It adds support for some SSE4
1741instructions that were omitted in 3.6.0 due to lack of time. Initial
1742support for glibc-2.13 has been added. A number of bugs causing
1743crashing or assertion failures have been fixed.

1824 -------------------------
1825
1826Here are details of the above changes, together with descriptions of
1827many other changes, and a list of fixed bugs.
1828
1829* ================== PLATFORM CHANGES =================
1830
1831* Support for ARM/Linux. Valgrind now runs on ARMv7 capable CPUs
1832 running Linux. It is known to work on Ubuntu 10.04, Ubuntu 10.10,
1833 and Maemo 5, so you can run Valgrind on your Nokia N900 if you want.
1834
1835 This requires a CPU capable of running the ARMv7-A instruction set
1836 (Cortex A5, A8 and A9). Valgrind provides fairly complete coverage
1837 of the user space instruction set, including ARM and Thumb integer
1838 code, VFPv3, NEON and V6 media instructions. The Memcheck,
1839 Cachegrind and Massif tools work properly; other tools work to
1840 varying degrees.
1841
1842* Support for recent Linux distros (Ubuntu 10.10 and Fedora 14), along
1843 with support for recent releases of the underlying toolchain
1844 components, notably gcc-4.5 and glibc-2.12.
1845
1846* Support for Mac OS X 10.6, both 32- and 64-bit executables. 64-bit
1847 support also works much better on OS X 10.5, and is as solid as
1848 32-bit support now.
1849
1850* Support for the SSE4.2 instruction set. SSE4.2 is supported in
1851 64-bit mode. In 32-bit mode, support is only available up to and
1852 including SSSE3. Some exceptions: SSE4.2 AES instructions are not
1853 supported in 64-bit mode, and 32-bit mode does in fact support the
sewardj695f13a2010-10-20 17:07:01 +00001854 bare minimum SSE4 instructions to needed to run programs on Mac OS X
sewardj18a08922010-10-14 00:26:42 +00001855 10.6 on 32-bit targets.
1856
1857* Support for IBM POWER6 cpus has been improved. The Power ISA up to
1858 and including version 2.05 is supported.
1859
1860* ==================== TOOL CHANGES ====================
1861
1862* Cachegrind has a new processing script, cg_diff, which finds the
1863 difference between two profiles. It's very useful for evaluating
1864 the performance effects of a change in a program.
njn69d495d2010-06-30 05:23:34 +00001865
1866 Related to this change, the meaning of cg_annotate's (rarely-used)
sewardj18a08922010-10-14 00:26:42 +00001867 --threshold option has changed; this is unlikely to affect many
1868 people, if you do use it please see the user manual for details.
njn9b919b62010-02-28 23:41:07 +00001869
sewardj18a08922010-10-14 00:26:42 +00001870* Callgrind now can do branch prediction simulation, similar to
1871 Cachegrind. In addition, it optionally can count the number of
1872 executed global bus events. Both can be used for a better
1873 approximation of a "Cycle Estimation" as derived event (you need to
1874 update the event formula in KCachegrind yourself).
njn2d853a12010-10-06 22:46:31 +00001875
sewardj18a08922010-10-14 00:26:42 +00001876* Cachegrind and Callgrind now refer to the LL (last-level) cache
1877 rather than the L2 cache. This is to accommodate machines with
1878 three levels of caches -- if Cachegrind/Callgrind auto-detects the
1879 cache configuration of such a machine it will run the simulation as
1880 if the L2 cache isn't present. This means the results are less
1881 likely to match the true result for the machine, but
1882 Cachegrind/Callgrind's results are already only approximate, and
1883 should not be considered authoritative. The results are still
1884 useful for giving a general idea about a program's locality.
njn2d853a12010-10-06 22:46:31 +00001885
sewardj695f13a2010-10-20 17:07:01 +00001886* Massif has a new option, --pages-as-heap, which is disabled by
sewardj18a08922010-10-14 00:26:42 +00001887 default. When enabled, instead of tracking allocations at the level
1888 of heap blocks (as allocated with malloc/new/new[]), it instead
1889 tracks memory allocations at the level of memory pages (as mapped by
1890 mmap, brk, etc). Each mapped page is treated as its own block.
1891 Interpreting the page-level output is harder than the heap-level
1892 output, but this option is useful if you want to account for every
1893 byte of memory used by a program.
njne323a6b2010-07-01 02:35:03 +00001894
sewardj18a08922010-10-14 00:26:42 +00001895* DRD has two new command-line options: --free-is-write and
1896 --trace-alloc. The former allows to detect reading from already freed
1897 memory, and the latter allows tracing of all memory allocations and
bart5cf4c392010-10-10 18:54:44 +00001898 deallocations.
1899
sewardj18a08922010-10-14 00:26:42 +00001900* DRD has several new annotations. Custom barrier implementations can
1901 now be annotated, as well as benign races on static variables.
bart5cf4c392010-10-10 18:54:44 +00001902
sewardj18a08922010-10-14 00:26:42 +00001903* DRD's happens before / happens after annotations have been made more
1904 powerful, so that they can now also be used to annotate e.g. a smart
bart5cf4c392010-10-10 18:54:44 +00001905 pointer implementation.
1906
sewardj18a08922010-10-14 00:26:42 +00001907* Helgrind's annotation set has also been drastically improved, so as
sewardj695f13a2010-10-20 17:07:01 +00001908 to provide to users a general set of annotations to describe locks,
sewardj18a08922010-10-14 00:26:42 +00001909 semaphores, barriers and condition variables. Annotations to
1910 describe thread-safe reference counted heap objects have also been
1911 added.
1912
1913* Memcheck has a new command-line option, --show-possibly-lost, which
1914 is enabled by default. When disabled, the leak detector will not
1915 show possibly-lost blocks.
1916
1917* A new experimental heap profiler, DHAT (Dynamic Heap Analysis Tool),
1918 has been added. DHAT keeps track of allocated heap blocks, and also
1919 inspects every memory reference to see which block (if any) is being
1920 accessed. This gives a lot of insight into block lifetimes,
1921 utilisation, turnover, liveness, and the location of hot and cold
1922 fields. You can use DHAT to do hot-field profiling.
1923
1924* ==================== OTHER CHANGES ====================
1925
1926* Improved support for unfriendly self-modifying code: the extra
1927 overhead incurred by --smc-check=all has been reduced by
1928 approximately a factor of 5 as compared with 3.5.0.
1929
1930* Ability to show directory names for source files in error messages.
sewardj695f13a2010-10-20 17:07:01 +00001931 This is combined with a flexible mechanism for specifying which
1932 parts of the paths should be shown. This is enabled by the new flag
1933 --fullpath-after.
sewardj18a08922010-10-14 00:26:42 +00001934
1935* A new flag, --require-text-symbol, which will stop the run if a
1936 specified symbol is not found it a given shared object when it is
sewardj695f13a2010-10-20 17:07:01 +00001937 loaded into the process. This makes advanced working with function
1938 intercepting and wrapping safer and more reliable.
sewardj18a08922010-10-14 00:26:42 +00001939
sewardj695f13a2010-10-20 17:07:01 +00001940* Improved support for the Valkyrie GUI, version 2.0.0. GUI output
1941 and control of Valgrind is now available for the tools Memcheck and
1942 Helgrind. XML output from Valgrind is available for Memcheck,
1943 Helgrind and exp-Ptrcheck.
sewardj18a08922010-10-14 00:26:42 +00001944
1945* More reliable stack unwinding on amd64-linux, particularly in the
1946 presence of function wrappers, and with gcc-4.5 compiled code.
1947
1948* Modest scalability (performance improvements) for massive
1949 long-running applications, particularly for those with huge amounts
1950 of code.
1951
1952* Support for analyzing programs running under Wine with has been
1953 improved. The header files <valgrind/valgrind.h>,
1954 <valgrind/memcheck.h> and <valgrind/drd.h> can now be used in
1955 Windows-programs compiled with MinGW or one of the Microsoft Visual
1956 Studio compilers.
1957
1958* A rare but serious error in the 64-bit x86 CPU simulation was fixed.
1959 The 32-bit simulator was not affected. This did not occur often,
1960 but when it did would usually crash the program under test.
1961 Bug 245925.
1962
1963* A large number of bugs were fixed. These are shown below.
1964
1965* A number of bugs were investigated, and were candidates for fixing,
1966 but are not fixed in 3.6.0, due to lack of developer time. They may
1967 get fixed in later releases. They are:

sewardj6bbe0242009-08-19 11:38:54 +00002115Release 3.5.0 (19 August 2009)
2116~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +000021173.5.0 is a feature release with many significant improvements and the
2118usual collection of bug fixes. The main improvement is that Valgrind
2119now works on Mac OS X.
2120
2121This release supports X86/Linux, AMD64/Linux, PPC32/Linux, PPC64/Linux
2122and X86/Darwin. Support for recent distros and toolchain components
2123(glibc 2.10, gcc 4.5) has been added.

2150
sewardj9176c862009-08-18 13:47:31 +00002151Here are details of the above changes, followed by descriptions of
2152many other minor changes, and a list of fixed bugs.
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002153
2154
2155* Valgrind now runs on Mac OS X. (Note that Mac OS X is sometimes
njnf95c30b2009-08-16 00:20:58 +00002156 called "Darwin" because that is the name of the OS core, which is the
2157 level that Valgrind works at.)
njnf76d27a2009-05-28 01:53:07 +00002158
njnf95c30b2009-08-16 00:20:58 +00002159 Supported systems:
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002160
njnf95c30b2009-08-16 00:20:58 +00002161 - It requires OS 10.5.x (Leopard). Porting to 10.4.x is not planned
2162 because it would require work and 10.4 is only becoming less common.
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002163
njnf95c30b2009-08-16 00:20:58 +00002164 - 32-bit programs on x86 and AMD64 (a.k.a x86-64) machines are supported
2165 fairly well. For 10.5.x, 32-bit programs are the default even on
2166 64-bit machines, so it handles most current programs.
2167
2168 - 64-bit programs on x86 and AMD64 (a.k.a x86-64) machines are not
2169 officially supported, but simple programs at least will probably work.
2170 However, start-up is slow.
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002171
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002172 - PowerPC machines are not supported.
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002173
njnc6ab7b62009-06-04 22:47:21 +00002174 Things that don't work:
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002175
2176 - The Ptrcheck tool.
2177
2178 - Objective-C garbage collection.
2179
2180 - --db-attach=yes.
2181
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002182 - If you have Rogue Amoeba's "Instant Hijack" program installed,
2183 Valgrind will fail with a SIGTRAP at start-up. See
2184 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=193917 for details and a
2185 simple work-around.
njnc6ab7b62009-06-04 22:47:21 +00002186
njn97db7612009-08-04 02:32:55 +00002187 Usage notes:
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002188
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002189 - You will likely find --dsymutil=yes a useful option, as error
2190 messages may be imprecise without it.
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002191
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002192 - Mac OS X support is new and therefore will be less robust than the
njn1205e022009-08-14 02:12:54 +00002193 Linux support. Please report any bugs you find.
njn97db7612009-08-04 02:32:55 +00002194
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002195 - Threaded programs may run more slowly than on Linux.
2196
njnc6ab7b62009-06-04 22:47:21 +00002197 Many thanks to Greg Parker for developing this port over several years.
2198
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002199
2200* Memcheck's leak checker has been improved.
2201
2202 - The results for --leak-check=summary now match the summary results
2203 for --leak-check=full. Previously they could differ because
2204 --leak-check=summary counted "indirectly lost" blocks and
2205 "suppressed" blocks as "definitely lost".
2206
2207 - Blocks that are only reachable via at least one interior-pointer,
2208 but are directly pointed to by a start-pointer, were previously
2209 marked as "still reachable". They are now correctly marked as
2210 "possibly lost".
2211
2212 - The default value for the --leak-resolution option has been
2213 changed from "low" to "high". In general, this means that more
2214 leak reports will be produced, but each leak report will describe
2215 fewer leaked blocks.
2216
2217 - With --leak-check=full, "definitely lost" and "possibly lost"
2218 leaks are now considered as proper errors, ie. they are counted
2219 for the "ERROR SUMMARY" and affect the behaviour of
2220 --error-exitcode. These leaks are not counted as errors if
2221 --leak-check=summary is specified, however.
2222
2223 - Documentation for the leak checker has been improved.
2224
njnf76d27a2009-05-28 01:53:07 +00002225
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002226* Various aspects of Valgrind's text output have changed.
njndbebecc2009-07-14 01:39:54 +00002227
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002228 - Valgrind's start-up message has changed. It is shorter but also
2229 includes the command being run, which makes it easier to use
2230 --trace-children=yes. An example:
njn53162bf2009-07-29 23:34:49 +00002231
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002232 - Valgrind's shut-down messages have also changed. This is most
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002233 noticeable with Memcheck, where the leak summary now occurs before
2234 the error summary. This change was necessary to allow leaks to be
2235 counted as proper errors (see the description of the leak checker
2236 changes above for more details). This was also necessary to fix a
2237 longstanding bug in which uses of suppressions against leaks were
2238 not "counted", leading to difficulties in maintaining suppression
sewardj783e9d62009-08-19 22:18:35 +00002239 files (see https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=186790).
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002240
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002241 - Behavior of -v has changed. In previous versions, -v printed out
2242 a mixture of marginally-user-useful information, and tool/core
2243 statistics. The statistics printing has now been moved to its own
2244 flag, --stats=yes. This means -v is less verbose and more likely
2245 to convey useful end-user information.
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002246
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002247 - The format of some (non-XML) stack trace entries has changed a
2248 little. Previously there were six possible forms:
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002249
2250 0x80483BF: really (a.c:20)
2251 0x80483BF: really (in /foo/a.out)
2252 0x80483BF: really
2253 0x80483BF: (within /foo/a.out)
2254 0x80483BF: ??? (a.c:20)
2255 0x80483BF: ???
2256
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002257 The third and fourth of these forms have been made more consistent
2258 with the others. The six possible forms are now:
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002259
2260 0x80483BF: really (a.c:20)
2261 0x80483BF: really (in /foo/a.out)
2262 0x80483BF: really (in ???)
2263 0x80483BF: ??? (in /foo/a.out)
2264 0x80483BF: ??? (a.c:20)
2265 0x80483BF: ???
2266
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002267 Stack traces produced when --xml=yes is specified are different
2268 and unchanged.
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002269
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002270
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002271* Helgrind and Ptrcheck now support XML output, so they can be used
2272 from GUI tools. Also, the XML output mechanism has been
2273 overhauled.
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002274
njn78b7bb32009-08-14 22:34:30 +00002275 - The XML format has been overhauled and generalised, so it is more
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002276 suitable for error reporting tools in general. The Memcheck
2277 specific aspects of it have been removed. The new format, which
2278 is an evolution of the old format, is described in
2279 docs/internals/xml-output-protocol4.txt.
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002280
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002281 - Memcheck has been updated to use the new format.
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002282
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002283 - Helgrind and Ptrcheck are now able to emit output in this format.
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002284
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002285 - The XML output mechanism has been overhauled. XML is now output
2286 to its own file descriptor, which means that:
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002287
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002288 * Valgrind can output text and XML independently.
njnb4e06872009-08-10 05:11:43 +00002289
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002290 * The longstanding problem of XML output being corrupted by
2291 unexpected un-tagged text messages is solved.
njn8df80b22009-03-02 05:11:06 +00002292
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002293 As before, the destination for text output is specified using
2294 --log-file=, --log-fd= or --log-socket=.
njnd55f0d92009-08-03 01:38:56 +00002295
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002296 As before, XML output for a tool is enabled using --xml=yes.
njnc6ab7b62009-06-04 22:47:21 +00002297
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002298 Because there's a new XML output channel, the XML output
2299 destination is now specified by --xml-file=, --xml-fd= or
2300 --xml-socket=.
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002301
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002302 Initial feedback has shown this causes some confusion. To
2303 clarify, the two envisaged usage scenarios are:
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002304
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002305 (1) Normal text output. In this case, do not specify --xml=yes
2306 nor any of --xml-file=, --xml-fd= or --xml-socket=.
2307
2308 (2) XML output. In this case, specify --xml=yes, and one of
2309 --xml-file=, --xml-fd= or --xml-socket= to select the XML
2310 destination, one of --log-file=, --log-fd= or --log-socket=
2311 to select the destination for any remaining text messages,
2312 and, importantly, -q.
2313
2314 -q makes Valgrind completely silent on the text channel,
2315 except in the case of critical failures, such as Valgrind
2316 itself segfaulting, or failing to read debugging information.
2317 Hence, in this scenario, it suffices to check whether or not
2318 any output appeared on the text channel. If yes, then it is
2319 likely to be a critical error which should be brought to the
2320 attention of the user. If no (the text channel produced no
2321 output) then it can be assumed that the run was successful.
2322
2323 This allows GUIs to make the critical distinction they need to
2324 make (did the run fail or not?) without having to search or
2325 filter the text output channel in any way.
2326
2327 It is also recommended to use --child-silent-after-fork=yes in
2328 scenario (2).
2329
2330
2331* Improvements and changes in Helgrind:
2332
2333 - XML output, as described above
2334
2335 - Checks for consistent association between pthread condition
2336 variables and their associated mutexes are now performed.
2337
2338 - pthread_spinlock functions are supported.
2339
2340 - Modest performance improvements.
2341
2342 - Initial (skeletal) support for describing the behaviour of
2343 non-POSIX synchronisation objects through ThreadSanitizer
2344 compatible ANNOTATE_* macros.
2345
2346 - More controllable tradeoffs between performance and the level of
2347 detail of "previous" accesses in a race. There are now three
2348 settings:
2349
2350 * --history-level=full. This is the default, and was also the
2351 default in 3.4.x. It shows both stacks involved in a race, but
2352 requires a lot of memory and can be very slow in programs that
2353 do many inter-thread synchronisation events.
2354
2355 * --history-level=none. This only shows the later stack involved
2356 in a race. This can be much faster than --history-level=full,
2357 but makes it much more difficult to find the other access
2358 involved in the race.
2359
2360 The new intermediate setting is
2361
2362 * --history-level=approx
2363
2364 For the earlier (other) access, two stacks are presented. The
2365 earlier access is guaranteed to be somewhere in between the two
2366 program points denoted by those stacks. This is not as useful
2367 as showing the exact stack for the previous access (as per
2368 --history-level=full), but it is better than nothing, and it's
2369 almost as fast as --history-level=none.
2370
njnace90d82009-04-27 01:27:58 +00002371
bart6a146fc2009-07-21 07:32:19 +00002372* New features and improvements in DRD:
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002373
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002374 - The error messages printed by DRD are now easier to interpret.
2375 Instead of using two different numbers to identify each thread
2376 (Valgrind thread ID and DRD thread ID), DRD does now identify
2377 threads via a single number (the DRD thread ID). Furthermore
2378 "first observed at" information is now printed for all error
2379 messages related to synchronization objects.
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002380
bartfe212db2009-07-25 11:16:51 +00002381 - Added support for named semaphores (sem_open() and sem_close()).
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002382
bart6a146fc2009-07-21 07:32:19 +00002383 - Race conditions between pthread_barrier_wait() and
2384 pthread_barrier_destroy() calls are now reported.
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002385
2386 - Added support for custom allocators through the macros
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002387 VALGRIND_MALLOCLIKE_BLOCK() VALGRIND_FREELIKE_BLOCK() (defined in
2388 in <valgrind/valgrind.h>). An alternative for these two macros is
2389 the new client request VG_USERREQ__DRD_CLEAN_MEMORY (defined in
bart6a146fc2009-07-21 07:32:19 +00002390 <valgrind/drd.h>).
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002391
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002392 - Added support for annotating non-POSIX synchronization objects
2393 through several new ANNOTATE_*() macros.
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002394
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002395 - OpenMP: added support for the OpenMP runtime (libgomp) included
2396 with gcc versions 4.3.0 and 4.4.0.
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002397
bart6a146fc2009-07-21 07:32:19 +00002398 - Faster operation.
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002399
2400 - Added two new command-line options (--first-race-only and
bart6a146fc2009-07-21 07:32:19 +00002401 --segment-merging-interval).
2402
njn6eccab92009-08-14 02:41:37 +00002403
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002404* Genuinely atomic support for x86/amd64/ppc atomic instructions
2405
2406 Valgrind will now preserve (memory-access) atomicity of LOCK-
2407 prefixed x86/amd64 instructions, and any others implying a global
2408 bus lock. Ditto for PowerPC l{w,d}arx/st{w,d}cx. instructions.
2409
2410 This means that Valgrinded processes will "play nicely" in
2411 situations where communication with other processes, or the kernel,
2412 is done through shared memory and coordinated with such atomic
2413 instructions. Prior to this change, such arrangements usually
2414 resulted in hangs, races or other synchronisation failures, because
2415 Valgrind did not honour atomicity of such instructions.
2416
2417
2418* A new experimental tool, BBV, has been added. BBV generates basic
2419 block vectors for use with the SimPoint analysis tool, which allows
2420 a program's overall behaviour to be approximated by running only a
2421 fraction of it. This is useful for computer architecture
2422 researchers. You can run BBV by specifying --tool=exp-bbv (the
2423 "exp-" prefix is short for "experimental"). BBV was written by
2424 Vince Weaver.
2425
2426
2427* Modestly improved support for running Windows applications under
2428 Wine. In particular, initial support for reading Windows .PDB debug
2429 information has been added.
2430
2431
2432* A new Memcheck client request VALGRIND_COUNT_LEAK_BLOCKS has been
2433 added. It is similar to VALGRIND_COUNT_LEAKS but counts blocks
2434 instead of bytes.
2435
2436
2437* The Valgrind client requests VALGRIND_PRINTF and
2438 VALGRIND_PRINTF_BACKTRACE have been changed slightly. Previously,
2439 the string was always printed immediately on its own line. Now, the
2440 string will be added to a buffer but not printed until a newline is
2441 encountered, or other Valgrind output is printed (note that for
2442 VALGRIND_PRINTF_BACKTRACE, the back-trace itself is considered
2443 "other Valgrind output"). This allows you to use multiple
2444 VALGRIND_PRINTF calls to build up a single output line, and also to
2445 print multiple output lines with a single request (by embedding
2446 multiple newlines in the string).
2447
2448
2449* The graphs drawn by Massif's ms_print program have changed slightly:
2450
2451 - The half-height chars '.' and ',' are no longer drawn, because
2452 they are confusing. The --y option can be used if the default
2453 y-resolution is not high enough.
2454
2455 - Horizontal lines are now drawn after the top of a snapshot if
2456 there is a gap until the next snapshot. This makes it clear that
2457 the memory usage has not dropped to zero between snapshots.
2458
2459
2460* Something that happened in 3.4.0, but wasn't clearly announced: the
2461 option --read-var-info=yes can be used by some tools (Memcheck,
2462 Helgrind and DRD). When enabled, it causes Valgrind to read DWARF3
2463 variable type and location information. This makes those tools
2464 start up more slowly and increases memory consumption, but
2465 descriptions of data addresses in error messages become more
2466 detailed.
2467
2468
2469* exp-Omega, an experimental instantaneous leak-detecting tool, was
2470 disabled in 3.4.0 due to a lack of interest and maintenance,
2471 although the source code was still in the distribution. The source
2472 code has now been removed from the distribution. For anyone
2473 interested, the removal occurred in SVN revision r10247.
2474
njnacda1782009-06-04 23:11:50 +00002475
njn8b68b642009-06-24 00:37:09 +00002476* Some changes have been made to the build system.
njn6bf365c2009-02-11 00:35:45 +00002477
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002478 - VEX/ is now integrated properly into the build system. This means
2479 that dependency tracking within VEX/ now works properly, "make
2480 install" will work without requiring "make" before it, and
2481 parallel builds (ie. 'make -j') now work (previously a
2482 .NOTPARALLEL directive was used to serialize builds, ie. 'make -j'
2483 was effectively ignored).
njn6bf365c2009-02-11 00:35:45 +00002484
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002485 - The --with-vex configure option has been removed. It was of
2486 little use and removing it simplified the build system.
njn8b68b642009-06-24 00:37:09 +00002487
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002488 - The location of some install files has changed. This should not
2489 affect most users. Those who might be affected:
njn8b68b642009-06-24 00:37:09 +00002490
2491 * For people who use Valgrind with MPI programs, the installed
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002492 libmpiwrap.so library has moved from
2493 $(INSTALL)/<platform>/libmpiwrap.so to
2494 $(INSTALL)/libmpiwrap-<platform>.so.
njn8b68b642009-06-24 00:37:09 +00002495
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002496 * For people who distribute standalone Valgrind tools, the
2497 installed libraries such as $(INSTALL)/<platform>/libcoregrind.a
2498 have moved to $(INSTALL)/libcoregrind-<platform>.a.
njn8b68b642009-06-24 00:37:09 +00002499
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002500 These changes simplify the build system.
njn8b68b642009-06-24 00:37:09 +00002501
sewardj570e2442009-08-14 13:42:41 +00002502 - Previously, all the distributed suppression (*.supp) files were
2503 installed. Now, only default.supp is installed. This should not
2504 affect users as the other installed suppression files were not
2505 read; the fact that they were installed was a mistake.
2506
2507
2508* KNOWN LIMITATIONS:
2509
2510 - Memcheck is unusable with the Intel compiler suite version 11.1,
2511 when it generates code for SSE2-and-above capable targets. This
2512 is because of icc's use of highly optimised inlined strlen
2513 implementations. It causes Memcheck to report huge numbers of
2514 false errors even in simple programs. Helgrind and DRD may also
2515 have problems.
2516
2517 Versions 11.0 and earlier may be OK, but this has not been
2518 properly tested.
2519
2520

njnad91a752009-03-13 19:55:36 +00002680Release 3.4.1 (28 February 2009)
2681~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
26823.4.1 is a bug-fix release that fixes some regressions and assertion
2683failures in debug info reading in 3.4.0, most notably incorrect stack
2684traces on amd64-linux on older (glibc-2.3 based) systems. Various
2685other debug info problems are also fixed. A number of bugs in the
2686exp-ptrcheck tool introduced in 3.4.0 have been fixed.
2687
2688In view of the fact that 3.4.0 contains user-visible regressions
2689relative to 3.3.x, upgrading to 3.4.1 is recommended. Packagers are
2690encouraged to ship 3.4.1 in preference to 3.4.0.
2691
2692The fixed bugs are as follows. Note that "n-i-bz" stands for "not in
2693bugzilla" -- that is, a bug that was reported to us but never got a
2694bugzilla entry. We encourage you to file bugs in bugzilla
2695(http://bugs.kde.org/enter_valgrind_bug.cgi) rather than mailing the
2696developers (or mailing lists) directly -- bugs that are not entered
2697into bugzilla tend to get forgotten about or ignored.

sewardj565fcf12008-12-23 13:14:06 +00002722Release 3.4.0 (2 January 2009)
2723~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
27243.4.0 is a feature release with many significant improvements and the
2725usual collection of bug fixes. This release supports X86/Linux,
2726AMD64/Linux, PPC32/Linux and PPC64/Linux. Support for recent distros
2727(using gcc 4.4, glibc 2.8 and 2.9) has been added.
sewardj8639f112008-12-17 12:26:24 +00002728
sewardj565fcf12008-12-23 13:14:06 +000027293.4.0 brings some significant tool improvements. Memcheck can now
2730report the origin of uninitialised values, the thread checkers
2731Helgrind and DRD are much improved, and we have a new experimental
2732tool, exp-Ptrcheck, which is able to detect overruns of stack and
2733global arrays. In detail:
sewardj8639f112008-12-17 12:26:24 +00002734
sewardj565fcf12008-12-23 13:14:06 +00002735* Memcheck is now able to track the origin of uninitialised values.
2736 When it reports an uninitialised value error, it will try to show
2737 the origin of the value, as either a heap or stack allocation.
2738 Origin tracking is expensive and so is not enabled by default. To
2739 use it, specify --track-origins=yes. Memcheck's speed will be
2740 essentially halved, and memory usage will be significantly
2741 increased. Nevertheless it can drastically reduce the effort
2742 required to identify the root cause of uninitialised value errors,
2743 and so is often a programmer productivity win, despite running more
2744 slowly.
sewardj8639f112008-12-17 12:26:24 +00002745
sewardj565fcf12008-12-23 13:14:06 +00002746* A version (1.4.0) of the Valkyrie GUI, that works with Memcheck in
sewardjb8b16642009-01-02 23:21:54 +00002747 3.4.0, will be released shortly.
sewardj8639f112008-12-17 12:26:24 +00002748
sewardj565fcf12008-12-23 13:14:06 +00002749* Helgrind's race detection algorithm has been completely redesigned
2750 and reimplemented, to address usability and scalability concerns:
sewardj8639f112008-12-17 12:26:24 +00002751
sewardj565fcf12008-12-23 13:14:06 +00002752 - The new algorithm has a lower false-error rate: it is much less
2753 likely to report races that do not really exist.
sewardj8639f112008-12-17 12:26:24 +00002754
sewardj565fcf12008-12-23 13:14:06 +00002755 - Helgrind will display full call stacks for both accesses involved
sewardjf1fa5ed2008-12-23 17:04:52 +00002756 in a race. This makes it easier to identify the root causes of
2757 races.
sewardj8639f112008-12-17 12:26:24 +00002758
sewardj565fcf12008-12-23 13:14:06 +00002759 - Limitations on the size of program that can run have been removed.
sewardj8639f112008-12-17 12:26:24 +00002760
sewardj565fcf12008-12-23 13:14:06 +00002761 - Performance has been modestly improved, although that is very
2762 workload-dependent.
sewardj8639f112008-12-17 12:26:24 +00002763
sewardj565fcf12008-12-23 13:14:06 +00002764 - Direct support for Qt4 threading has been added.
sewardj8639f112008-12-17 12:26:24 +00002765
sewardj565fcf12008-12-23 13:14:06 +00002766 - pthread_barriers are now directly supported.
njn75010ca2008-02-09 05:10:45 +00002767
sewardj565fcf12008-12-23 13:14:06 +00002768 - Helgrind works well on all supported Linux targets.
sewardj8639f112008-12-17 12:26:24 +00002769
sewardj565fcf12008-12-23 13:14:06 +00002770* The DRD thread debugging tool has seen major improvements:
sewardj8639f112008-12-17 12:26:24 +00002771
sewardj565fcf12008-12-23 13:14:06 +00002772 - Greatly improved performance and significantly reduced memory
2773 usage.
sewardj8639f112008-12-17 12:26:24 +00002774
sewardj565fcf12008-12-23 13:14:06 +00002775 - Support for several major threading libraries (Boost.Thread, Qt4,
2776 glib, OpenMP) has been added.
sewardj8639f112008-12-17 12:26:24 +00002777
sewardj565fcf12008-12-23 13:14:06 +00002778 - Support for atomic instructions, POSIX semaphores, barriers and
2779 reader-writer locks has been added.
2780
2781 - Works now on PowerPC CPUs too.
2782
2783 - Added support for printing thread stack usage at thread exit time.
2784
2785 - Added support for debugging lock contention.
2786
2787 - Added a manual for Drd.
2788
2789* A new experimental tool, exp-Ptrcheck, has been added. Ptrcheck
2790 checks for misuses of pointers. In that sense it is a bit like
2791 Memcheck. However, Ptrcheck can do things Memcheck can't: it can
2792 detect overruns of stack and global arrays, it can detect
2793 arbitrarily far out-of-bounds accesses to heap blocks, and it can
2794 detect accesses heap blocks that have been freed a very long time
2795 ago (millions of blocks in the past).
2796
2797 Ptrcheck currently works only on x86-linux and amd64-linux. To use
2798 it, use --tool=exp-ptrcheck. A simple manual is provided, as part
2799 of the main Valgrind documentation. As this is an experimental
2800 tool, we would be particularly interested in hearing about your
2801 experiences with it.
2802
sewardj974aace2008-12-24 18:40:57 +00002803* exp-Omega, an experimental instantaneous leak-detecting tool, is no
2804 longer built by default, although the code remains in the repository
2805 and the tarball. This is due to three factors: a perceived lack of
2806 users, a lack of maintenance, and concerns that it may not be
2807 possible to achieve reliable operation using the existing design.
sewardj565fcf12008-12-23 13:14:06 +00002808
2809* As usual, support for the latest Linux distros and toolchain
2810 components has been added. It should work well on Fedora Core 10,
2811 OpenSUSE 11.1 and Ubuntu 8.10. gcc-4.4 (in its current pre-release
2812 state) is supported, as is glibc-2.9. The C++ demangler has been
2813 updated so as to work well with C++ compiled by even the most recent
2814 g++'s.
2815
2816* You can now use frame-level wildcards in suppressions. This was a
2817 frequently-requested enhancement. A line "..." in a suppression now
2818 matches zero or more frames. This makes it easier to write
2819 suppressions which are precise yet insensitive to changes in
2820 inlining behaviour.
2821
2822* 3.4.0 adds support on x86/amd64 for the SSSE3 instruction set.
2823
2824* Very basic support for IBM Power6 has been added (64-bit processes only).
2825
2826* Valgrind is now cross-compilable. For example, it is possible to
2827 cross compile Valgrind on an x86/amd64-linux host, so that it runs
2828 on a ppc32/64-linux target.
2829
sewardjf1fa5ed2008-12-23 17:04:52 +00002830* You can set the main thread's stack size at startup using the
2831 new --main-stacksize= flag (subject of course to ulimit settings).
2832 This is useful for running apps that need a lot of stack space.
2833
2834* The limitation that you can't use --trace-children=yes together
2835 with --db-attach=yes has been removed.
2836
sewardj565fcf12008-12-23 13:14:06 +00002837* The following bugs have been fixed. Note that "n-i-bz" stands for
2838 "not in bugzilla" -- that is, a bug that was reported to us but
2839 never got a bugzilla entry. We encourage you to file bugs in
2840 bugzilla (http://bugs.kde.org/enter_valgrind_bug.cgi) rather than
2841 mailing the developers (or mailing lists) directly.

2878Developer-visible changes:
2879
2880* Valgrind's debug-info reading machinery has been majorly overhauled.
2881 It can now correctly establish the addresses for ELF data symbols,
2882 which is something that has never worked properly before now.
2883
2884 Also, Valgrind can now read DWARF3 type and location information for
2885 stack and global variables. This makes it possible to use the
2886 framework to build tools that rely on knowing the type and locations
2887 of stack and global variables, for example exp-Ptrcheck.
2888
2889 Reading of such information is disabled by default, because most
2890 tools don't need it, and because it is expensive in space and time.
2891 However, you can force Valgrind to read it, using the
2892 --read-var-info=yes flag. Memcheck, Helgrind and DRD are able to
2893 make use of such information, if present, to provide source-level
2894 descriptions of data addresses in the error messages they create.
