2================================
3
4A recent change to e2fsck_add_dir_info() to use tdb files to check
5filesystems with a very large number of filesystems had a typo which
6caused us to resize the wrong data structure. This would cause a
7array overrun leading to malloc pointer corruptions and segfaults.
8Since we normally can very accurately predict how big the the dirinfo
9array needs to be, this bug only got triggered on very badly corrupted
10filesystems.
11
12Fix a bug in e2fsck which caused it to incorrectly salvange
13directories when the last entry's rec_len is bogusly too big. This
14resulted in a nonsense filesystem corruption to be reported, and
15required a second run of e2fsck to fully fix up the directory.
16
17Update tune2fs man page to include more discussion of reserved blocks
18(Addresses Launchpad bug #47817)
19
20Update Turkish, Polish, Dutch, and Vietnamese PO files from the
21Translation Project

27Fix bug which could cause libblkid to loop forever. When revalidating
28a partition where there is obsolete information in /etc/blkid.tab, we
29end up freeing a the type tag without clearing dev->bid_type, causing
30blkid_verify() to loop forever. (Addresses Debian Bug: #432052)
31
32The Turkish translation has a bug in it where it has the translation
33of "E@e '%Dn' in %p (%i)" to "E@E". This causes @E to be expanded at
34@E, recursively, forever, until the stack fills up and e2fsck core
35dumps. We fix this by making e2fsck stop @-expansions after a
36recursive depth of 10, which is far more than we need.
Theodore Ts'od2dc78a2007-07-14 09:03:17 -040037(Addresses Sourceforge Bug: #1646081)
Theodore Ts'o58b3df72007-07-08 20:26:51 -040038
39Compile the default mke2fs.conf into mke2fs program. People are
40getting surprised by mke2fs creating filesystems with different
41defaults than earlier versions of mke2fs if mke2fs.conf is not
42present. So we now create a built in version of mke2fs.conf file
43which is used by mke2fs if the /etc/mke2fs.conf is not present.
44(Addresses SourceforgeBug: #1745818)
45
46Improve the config/parse_types.sh helper script. Fix a potential
47security problem if e2fsprogs is built as root (as Gentoo does!). In
48addition fix the script and how it is called from the configure script
49so that it does the right thing when cross-compiling. (Fixes Gentoo
50bug: #146903)
51
52Update Vietnamese, French, and Dutch PO files from the Translation
53Project. Also created a new e2fsprogs.pot file for translator.
54
55Fix bogus strip permission errors when building under Debian. When
56building the e2fsprogs dpkg's, the dh_strip command emits a large
57number of error messages caused by the permissions not being right.
58So run dh_fixperms before running dh_strip.
Theodore Ts'o58b3df72007-07-08 20:26:51 -040059
60Programmer's Notes:
61-------------------
62
63Add new function: profile_set_default(). This function sets the value
64of the pseudo file "<default>". If the file "<default>" had
65previously been passed to profile_init(), then def_string parameter
66will be parsed and used as the profile information for the "<default>"
67file.
68
69Fix mk_cmds's error reporting so that it is unambiguous that it is the
70mk_cmds script which is generating the error. (Obviates Gentoo patch:
71e2fsprogs-1.32-mk_cmds-cosmetic.patch)
72
73Fix the test suite to use LC_ALL instead of LANG. LC_ALL is the "high
74priority" environment variable that overrides all others, where as
75LANG is the lowest priorty environment variable. If LC_ALL is set, it
76doesn't matter whether LANG, LANGUAGE, LC_COLLATE, LC_MESSAGES, and
77the all the rest are set. This will assure that the locale when
78running the test suites is the "C" locale. (Obviates Gentoo patch:
79e2fsprogs-1.38-tests-locale.patch)
80

84
85Fix divide by zero error in blkid's NTFS probing logic.
Theodore Ts'od7b64722007-06-24 17:32:47 -040086
87Add new blkid -g option which causes the blkid cache to be garbage
88collected.
89
90Fix a bug in libblkid which could cause the internal field bid_type to
91become corrupted. Fortunately bid_type isn't used much, and bid_label
92and bid_uuid is only used by debugging code, so the impact of this bug
93was very minor.
94
95Mke2fs will now store the RAID stride value when a filesystem is
96created with a requested RAID stride, and then use it automatically in
97resize2fs.
98
99Mke2fs has a sanity check added to make sure (inode_size * num_inodes)
100isn't too big. In some cases Lustre users have tried specifying an
101inode size of 4096 bytes, while keeping an inode ratio of one inode
102per 4096 bytes.
103
104Improve sanity check in e2fsck's algorithm for finding a backup
105superblock, so that it won't accidentally find a superblock that was
106located in the journal, and then later reject it as being not a valid
107backup superblock.
108
109Fix e2fsck get_size logic so that it will work with the Linux floppy
110driver. The Linux floppy driver is a bit different from the other
111block device drivers, in that if the device has been opened with
112O_EXCL, it disallows another open(), even if the second open() does
113not have the O_EXCL flag. (Addresses Debian Bug: #410569)
114
115Fix error checking of badblock's last-block and start-block arguments.
116(Addresses Debian Bug: #416477)
117
118Fix e2fsck so that it doesn't overwrite the backup superblocks when
119recovering a journal until the master superblock has been confirmed as
120being sane.
121
122Change the blkid library to be much more paranoid about concluding
123that a partition contains an NTFS filesystem, and fetch the UUID and
124LABEL information from NTFS filesystems. (Addresses Launchpad Bug:
125#110138)
126
127Factor out the code which sets the default journal size and move it
128into libext2fs.
129
130Enhance e2fsck so it will recreate the ext3 journal if the original
131journal inode was cleared to due it being corrupt after finishing the
132filesystem check.
133
134Fix e2fsck so that it updates the journal inode if it is corrupted and
135the backup journal information from the superblock was successfully
136used to recover the filesystem.
137
138Fix e2fsck so that it checks all of the blocks in the journal inode
139for validity. The original code only checked the direct blocks to
140make sure the journal inode was sane. Unfortunately, if some or all
141of the indirect or doubly indirect blocks were corrupted, this would
142not be caught.
143
144Add support in blkid to detect LUKS encrypted partitions.
145
146Add extra sanity checks for extended attributes in the case where the
147size is zero but the offset is very large.
148
149Fix byte-swapping issues for large inodes in ext2fs_read_inode_full()
150and ext2fs_get_next_inode_full().
151
152Clarify the copyright licenses used by the various libraries in
153the top-level COPYING file (Red Hat Bugzilla: 166058)
154
155Make mke2fs's defaults when /etc/mke2fs.conf doesn't exist more sane.
156
157Fix mke2fs and debugfs to support large (> 16 bit) uid's and gid's.
158
159Remove check in e2fsck which requires EA's in inodes to be sorted;
160they don't need to be sorted, and e2fsck was previously wrongly
161clearing unsorted EA's stored in the inode structure.
162
163Allow mke2fs or tune2fs to create a substantially larger journal (up
164to 10,240,000 blocks).
165
166Fix MD superblock detection, and make sure the correct UUID is
167reported from the MD superblock.
168
169Fix a signed vs. unsigned bug in debugfs.
170
171Enhance debugfs's date parser so that it accepts integer values.
172
173Fix e2fsck's pass1c accounting so it doesn't terminate too early if a
174file with multiply claimed blocks is hard linked. or not at all if the
175root directory contains shared blocks
176
177Enhance debugfs so it can modify the block group descriptors using the
178command set_block_group_descriptor.
179
180Improve e2fsck's reporting of I/O errors so it's clearer what it was
181trying to do when an error happens
182
183Fix a bug in in how e2fsprogs byte swaps inodes containing fast
184symlinks that have extended attributes. (Addresses Red Hat Bugzilla:
185#232663 and LTC Bugzilla: #27634)
186
187Fix potential file descriptor leak in ext2fs_get_device_size() in an
188error case.
Theodore Ts'oa0d42542007-04-07 11:05:10 -0400189
190Add libreadline.so.5 support to libss.
191
192Impove badblocks -n/-w exclusive usage message.
193
194Fix dump_unused segfault in debugfs when a filesystem is not open
195
196Fix memory leak in blkid library. (Addresses Debian Bug: #413661)
197
198Allow the debugfs lcd command to work w/o a filesystem being open.
199(Addresses LTC Bugzilla #27513)
200
201Fix e2fsck to clear i_size for special devices with a bogus i_blocks
202field on the first pass.
203
204Fix e2fsck to set the file type of the '..' entry when connecting
205a directory to lost+found. (Addresses Lustre Bug: #11645)
206
207Enhance e2fsck to recover directories whose modes field were corrupted
208to look like special files. This is probably only useful in
209artificial test cases, but it will be useful if we ever do the "inodes
210in directory" idea for ext4.
211
212Allow debugfs to dump (and rdump) > 2GB files. (Addresses Debian Bug:
213#412614)
214
215Fix resize2fs parsing of size parameter (in sector units). This was
216actually a bug in libe2p's parse_num_blocks() function. When handling
217the 's' suffix, it was ignoring the blocksize information passed in
218from the caller and always interpreting the number in terms of a 1k
219blocksize. (Addresses Debian Bug: #408298)
220
221There was a floating point precision error which could cause e2fsck to
222loop forever on really big filesystems with a large inode count.
223(Addresses Debian Bug: #411838)
224
225Fix memory leak in ext2fs_write_new_inode()
226
227Add support for using a scratch files directory to reduce e2fsck's
228emory utilization on really big filesystems. This uses the TDB
229library. See the [scratch_files] section of the e2fsck.conf man page
230for more details.
Theodore Ts'o7809bc52006-11-14 23:49:07 -0500231
232Fixed type-punning bug which caused dumpe2fs to crash on the Arm
233platform (Addresses Debian Bug: #397044)
234
235Add explanatory message to badblocks that -n and -w are mutually exclusive
236(Addresses Debian Bug: #371869)
237
238Allow debugfs and dumpe2fs to support fs features under development.
239
240Add support for the new flag EXT2_FLAG_SOFTSUPP_FEATURES flag to
241ext2fs_open() , which allows application to open filesystes with features
242which are currently only partially supported by e2fsprogs.
243
244Allow unix_io to support offsets greater than 2G (Addresses
245SourceForge Bug: #1547922)
Theodore Ts'o26bcc2c2006-10-02 13:34:48 -0400246
247Fixed overflow and signed/unsigned problems caused by the number of
Theodore Ts'o7809bc52006-11-14 23:49:07 -0500248blocks or inodes exceeding 2**31 or being close to 2**32-1.
249
250Add support for unsigned directory hash calculations with hints in the
251superblock to fix cross-architectural portability for htree
252directories with filenames where the high 8th bit is set. (Addresses
253Debian: #389772)
Theodore Ts'o26bcc2c2006-10-02 13:34:48 -0400254
255Fix resize2fs so that it gives user-intelligible error messages if the
256filesystem or the kernel does not support on-line resizing.
257(Addresses Debian Bug: #380548)
258
259Require mke2fs -F -F for really dangerous operations, since -F is
260needed for less dangerous operations such as creating filesystems
261images in regular files, or creating filesystems on whole block
262devices. These relatively innocuous usages should NOT be confused
263with running mke2fs on an apparently-mounted or in-use filesystem.
264
265Allow the default inode size to be specified into the mke2fs.conf
266file.
267
268Make the smallest default journal size is big enough so that on-line
269resizing should always work.
270
271Fix silly spelling error in e2fsck. (Addresses SourceForge bug:
272#1531372)
273
274Fix debugfs coredump when lsdel is run without an open filesystem
275(Addresses Debian Bug: #378335)
276
277Fix debugfs display bug us that bytes that have the high bit set are
278displayed as "ec" instead of "ffffffec".
279
280Add support in lsattr so it will display the EXT4_EXTENTS_FL flag.
281
282Device mapper scanning wasn't working in the blkid library because the
283pathnames had an extra "/dev" when they were being probed.
284
285Add GFS/GFS2 support to the blkid library.
286
287Fix blkid support of empty FAT filesystem labels.
288
289Avoid recursing forever (or for a long time) when the blkid library
290searches for a device and there are symlinks to directories in /dev.
291
292Avoid unaligned halfword access in blkid when accessing FAT
293superblocks, as this will cause Sparc/Solaris systems to throw a
294SIGBUS error.
295
296The latest devmapper libraries requires pthreads, add -lpthreads to
297the static link libraries for e2fsck.static if devmapper is enabled.
298(Addresses Debian bug: #388718)
299
300Improve the (non-installed, for experts only) findsuper program by
301printing the uuid and label from the superblocks, as well as the
302starting and ending offsets of the filesystem given the information in
303the superblock. Omit by default printing superblocks that are likely
304found in located in an ext3 journal unless an explicit -j option is
305given.
306
307Updated French and Dutch translations and added Vietnamese translation.
308
309Use FreeBSD's DIOCGMEDIASIZE and DIOCGDINFO ioctls if available when
310determining a partition's size, since binary searching to determine
311the device doesn't work on FreeBSD.
312
Theodore Ts'od7b64722007-06-24 17:32:47 -0400313Documentation about UUID's is available in enough places, and it's
314awkward to deal with debian-legal's insanities. So I'm caving in the
315"more-lunatic-than-RMS" wing of Debian by removing RFC-4122 so we
316don't have do the dfsg tarball. Also remove the rule that only tried
317to install RFC-4122 on Ubuntu, since Ubuntu seems to want to fetch
318e2fsprogs exclusively from Debian. (Addresses Debian Bug: #407107)
319
320Fix the info-dir line so that the menu name does not contain a .info
321prefix. First of all, it's ugly, secondly, it causes the install-info
322command to fail to remove the com_err info file from the
323/usr/share/info/dir file when the comerr-dev package is removed and
324purged. (Addresses Debian Bug: #401711)
325
Theodore Ts'o26bcc2c2006-10-02 13:34:48 -0400326Fixed spelling mistakes, typos, and otherwise clarified man pages.
Theodore Ts'oa0d42542007-04-07 11:05:10 -0400327(Addresses Debian Bug: #369761, #373004, #379695)
Theodore Ts'o26bcc2c2006-10-02 13:34:48 -0400328
329Fixed various Debian packaging issues --- see debian/changelog for
Theodore Ts'od7b64722007-06-24 17:32:47 -0400330details. (Addresses Debian Bugs #389554, #390664, #413208, #419605,
331#408352, #415560, #399155)
Theodore Ts'o26bcc2c2006-10-02 13:34:48 -0400332
333
334Programmer's notes:
335-------------------
336
Theodore Ts'oa0d42542007-04-07 11:05:10 -0400337E2fsck now supports the %It expansion when printing a problem report.
338It will print the type of the inode in the problem context.
339
Theodore Ts'o26bcc2c2006-10-02 13:34:48 -0400340Fix misc/Makefile.in so that it builds even if e2fsck hasn't been built yet
341(Addresses Sourceforge Bug: #1565561)
342
343Remove unused variables and other lint/gcc -Wall cleanups
344
345Add check to ext2fs_get_device_size() so it will return EFBIG for for
346filesystems contained in regular files where the filesystem image size
347is returned by stat64().
348
Theodore Ts'o7809bc52006-11-14 23:49:07 -0500349Set local environment variables to C so mk_cmds and compile_et always
350work. (Addresses SourceForge Bug: #1532177)
351
Theodore Ts'o26bcc2c2006-10-02 13:34:48 -0400352Added the 64-bit byte swapping function ext2fs_swab64().
353
354Added two new helper functions to prevent 2**31/2**32-1 overflow
355problems: ext2fs_div_ceil() and e2p_percent().
356
357Create new ext2fs library inline functions ext2fs_group_first_block()
358and ext2fs_group_last_block() in order to calculate the starting and
359ending blocks in a block group.
360
361Create the generated files read-only to remind developers not to edit them.
362
Theodore Ts'o7809bc52006-11-14 23:49:07 -0500363Add support for autoconf 2.60 (with backwards compatibility for older
364versions of autoconf).
365
Theodore Ts'o26bcc2c2006-10-02 13:34:48 -0400366Added an "make rpm" target to top-level Makefile
367
368Added various FreeBSD portability fixes.
369
370Exclude mercurial files from the RPM build tree to speed up copy/build.
371
372Use root_sysconfdir to define the locations of mke2fs.conf and
373e2fsck.conf instead of using a hard-coded /etc pathname.
374
375Prevent e2fsck.h and ext2_ext_attr.h from getting included multiple times.
376
377Fixed "make clean" in blkid's Makefile.in file from removing tst_*.c files.
378
379If diff -u is supported, use it to report test failures.
380
381Updates/improvements to RPM spec file
382
Theodore Ts'o7809bc52006-11-14 23:49:07 -0500383Add on-disk format definitions for the following new features:
384EXT4_FEATURE_RO_COMPAT_HUGE_FILE, EXT4_FEATURE_RO_COMPAT_GDT_CSUM,
385EXT4_FEATURE_RO_COMPAT_DIR_NLINK, EXT4_FEATURE_INCOMPAT_64BIT,
386EXT4_FEATURE_RO_COMPAT_EXTRA_ISIZE
387
388Add a new make target "checked-failed" in the tests directory which
389reruns any failed tests
390
391Update draft-leach-uuids-guids-01.txt with rfc4122.txt
392
Theodore Ts'oa0d42542007-04-07 11:05:10 -0400393Fix miscellaneous bugs reported by Coverity: Dead code, potential nul
394pointer dereferences, memory leaks, etc. None were security-criticial
395problems.
396
397Fix up usage and decrement error messages in the test_icount program
398
399Add debugging code to the com_err library; if the environment variable
400COMERR_DEBUG is set to 1, print out debugging messages as error tables
401are added and removed from the com_err library. If the
402COMERR_DEBUG_FILE environment variable is set (and the process is not
403setuid) the debugging messages may be redirected to a file.
404
405Change all of the e2fsprogs programs to use the newer add_error_table()
406and remove_error_table() interfaces instead of the much older
407initialize_*_error_table() function.
408
409Add TDB support into the ext2fs library. This allows us to have a
410guaranteed library we can count on always being present so we can
411store data in an on-disk database.
412
413Add support for using TDB to store the icount data, so we don't run out
414of memory when checking really large filesystems.
415
Theodore Ts'od7b64722007-06-24 17:32:47 -0400416Change the regression test suite so that it skips empty test directories.
417
418Define the l_i_iversion field in ext2_inode. The l_i_version field is
419now defined from the old l_i_reserved1 field in the ext2 inode. This
420field will be used to store high 32 bits of the 64-bit inode version
421number.
422
423Add Makefile production rule for e2fsprogs.spec in case it gets
424deleted.
425
426Add new function profile_get_uint() to allow for a clean way to fetch
427unsigned integers from the context.
428
429Add test to make sure the ext2 superblock structure is 1024 bytes.
430
431Fix typo in name of f_dup4 regression test
432
433Add new function blkid_gc_cache() which performs a garbage collection
434pass on the /etc/blkid.tab file.
435
436The ext2fs_open() function now sets EXT2_FLAG_MASTER_SB_ONLY. In
437general, only e2fsck (after the filesystem is clean), tune2fs, and
438resize2fs should change the backup superblocks by default. Most
439callers of ext2fs_open() should not be touching any superblock fields
440which require the backups to be touched.
441
442Add new function to libext2fs, ext2fs_default_journal_size(), which
443returns the default journal size.

Theodore Ts'o34a26112006-03-29 20:40:23 -0500449Fix 32-bit cleanliness in e2fsprogs so that we can support filesystems
450between 2**31 and 2**32 blocks.
451
Theodore Ts'o34a26112006-03-29 20:40:23 -0500452Change mke2fs to use /etc/mke2fs.conf as a configuration file to
453configure the filesystem features, blocksize, and inode_ratio for
454different filesystem types.
455
Theodore Ts'o6c094752006-05-29 11:47:25 -0400456Mke2fs will now create filesystems hash trees and on-line resizing
457enabled by default, based on the new /etc/mke2fs.conf file.
458
Theodore Ts'o34a26112006-03-29 20:40:23 -0500459The e2fsprogs tools (resize2fs, e2fsck, mke2fs) will open the
460filesystem device node in exclusive mode to prevent accidents by
461system administrators. In the case of resize2fs and mke2fs, it will
462only use exclusive mode if the filesystem is not mounted.
463
464Fixed a bug in mke2fs which caused it to to fail when creating the
465resize inode for large filesystems. (Addresses Debian Bug #346580)
466
Theodore Ts'obae55642006-05-14 17:31:48 -0400467When allocating space for the RAID filesystems with the stride
468parameter, mke2fs will now place each portion of the group's inode
469table right up after the superblock (if present) in order to minimize
470fragmentation of the freespace.
471
472Speed up mke2fs and e2fsck by writing inode and block bitmaps more
473efficiently by writing the inode and block bitmaps in one pass, thus
474reducing the number of disk seeks required.
475
Theodore Ts'o34a26112006-03-29 20:40:23 -0500476Add support for on-line resizing to resize2fs.
477
478Fix blkid library so that logic to determine whether or not a device's
479cached information in /etc/blkid.tab needs to be verified or not
480doesn't get confused by a system clock which is insane (for example,
481if the battery is dead on a Macintosh running PPC Linux. (Addresses
482Red Hat Bug: #182188)
483
484The blkid library will now store the UUID of the external journal used
485by ext3 filesystems, so that in the future, the userspace mount binary
486can use this to find the location of the external journal and pass
487this information to the kernel.
Theodore Ts'of3227852005-12-31 16:45:29 -0500488
489E2fsck will now consult a configuration file, /etc/e2fsck.conf to
Theodore Ts'o34a26112006-03-29 20:40:23 -0500490control how various options should be handled. See the e2fsck.conf
491man page for more details. (Addresses Debian Bug: #150295)
Theodore Ts'of3227852005-12-31 16:45:29 -0500492
Theodore Ts'o34a26112006-03-29 20:40:23 -0500493E2fsck now prints an explanatory message when delaying a filesystem
494check when the system is running on battery. (Addresses Debian Bug:
495#350306)
Theodore Ts'of2b74cd2005-08-22 01:20:23 -0400496
Theodore Ts'o4c02c412005-12-09 19:20:01 -0500497E2fsck will detect if the superblock's last mount field or last write
498field is in the future, and offer to fix if so. (Addresses Debian Bug
Theodore Ts'of3227852005-12-31 16:45:29 -0500499#327580) These problems will be fixed automatically in preen mode
500since Debian's boot sequence bogusly doesn't set the time correctly
501until potentially very late in the bootup process, and this can cause
502false positives which will cause users' systems to fail to boot.
503(Addresses Debian Bugs #343662 and #343645)
Theodore Ts'of2b74cd2005-08-22 01:20:23 -0400504
Theodore Ts'o34a26112006-03-29 20:40:23 -0500505E2fsck now checks to see if the superblock hint for the location of
506the external journal is incorrect, and if so, offer to update it.
507(Addresses Debian Bug: #355644)
508
Theodore Ts'of2b74cd2005-08-22 01:20:23 -0400509Fix e2fsck from segfaulting on disconnected inodes that contain one or
510more extended attributes. (Addresses Debian Bug: #316736, #318463)
511
Theodore Ts'o4c02c412005-12-09 19:20:01 -0500512E2fsck will stop and print a warning if the user tries running a
513read/write badblocks test on a read-only mounted root filesystem.
514
Theodore Ts'obae55642006-05-14 17:31:48 -0400515Fix a memory leak in e2fsck's error paths. (Thanks to Michael
516C. Thompson for pointing these out; they were originally found using
517Coverity.)
518
Theodore Ts'of3227852005-12-31 16:45:29 -0500519When resizing a file containing a filesystem, resize2fs will expand or
520truncate a file as necessary. (Addresses Debian Bug: #271607)
521
Theodore Ts'obae55642006-05-14 17:31:48 -0400522Resize2fs will now automatically determine the RAID stride parameter that
523had been used to create the filesystem, and use that for newly created
524block groups. The RAID stride parameter may also be manually specified
525on the command line using the new -S option to resize2fs.
526
Theodore Ts'o4c02c412005-12-09 19:20:01 -0500527Fix mke2fs so that it correctly creates external journals on
528big-endian machines (such as a S/390).
529
Theodore Ts'obae55642006-05-14 17:31:48 -0400530Fix a bug in the e2p library which could cause dumpe2fs to (rarely)
531fail to print out the journal or hash seed UUID. (Thanks to Guillaume
532Chambraud for pointing this out.)
533
534Dumpe2fs will now print the size of the journal (if present).
535
Theodore Ts'o4c02c412005-12-09 19:20:01 -0500536Fix debugfs's set_inode_field command so it can properly set the frag,
537fsize, uid_high, gid_high, and author fields in the inode instead of
538silently failing, and so that setting the i_size actually sets i_size
539correctly.
540
541Add a new debugfs command, set_current_time, which sets fs->now so
542that regression test suites can repeatedly modify the filesystem's
543last_write fields.
544
Theodore Ts'o34a26112006-03-29 20:40:23 -0500545Fix a bug in debugfs's icheck which would incorrectly report the owner
546of an extended attribute block.
547
Theodore Ts'obae55642006-05-14 17:31:48 -0400548Fix the debugfs commands htree_dump, dx_hash, and list_dir so they print a
549print a usage message when an illegal option character is given.
550
Theodore Ts'o6c094752006-05-29 11:47:25 -0400551Fix debugfs's dump_unsued command on filesystems with a 64k blocksize
552so it won't core dump. (Addresses SourceForge bug #1424311)
553
Theodore Ts'obae55642006-05-14 17:31:48 -0400554Fix mklost+found so that it creates a full-sized directory on
555filesystems with larger block sizes.
556
557Fix a file descriptor leak in blkid library.
558
Theodore Ts'o4c02c412005-12-09 19:20:01 -0500559Fix a display bug in "badblocks -sv" so that the done message properly
560clears the block number at the end of the test. (Addresses Debian Bug
561#322231)
562
Theodore Ts'of2b74cd2005-08-22 01:20:23 -0400563Allow fractional percentages to the -m option in mke2fs and tune2fs
564(Addresses Debian Bug: #80205)
565
566Use fstat/fstat64 in getsize.c if the the target is a regular file,
567instead of attempting to do a binary search. Fix some fd leaks in
568error cases.
569
Theodore Ts'o34a26112006-03-29 20:40:23 -0500570Add support for device mapper library to the blkid library to ensure
571that the "best" (i.e., leaf) device is probed by the blkid library.
572
Theodore Ts'o4c02c412005-12-09 19:20:01 -0500573Fix the blkid library so that it notices when an ext2 filesystem is
574upgraded to ext3.
575
576Improve the blkid's library VFAT/FAT detection; it now understands
577labels stored in the root directory, and is more paranoid about
578checking the FAT superblock values.
579
Theodore Ts'o34a26112006-03-29 20:40:23 -0500580Fixed a fd leak in the uuid library which was causing problems for the
581LVM tools. (Addresses Debian Bug: #345832)
582
Theodore Ts'o4c02c412005-12-09 19:20:01 -0500583Add support for the reiser4 and software suspend partitions to the
584blkid library. Also add support for extract the label from iso9660
585filesystems.
586
Theodore Ts'of2b74cd2005-08-22 01:20:23 -0400587Fix a compile_et bug which miscount the number of error messages if
588continuations are used in the .et file.
589
590Add extra sanity checks to protect users from unusual cirucmstances
591where /etc/mtab may not be sane, by checking to see if the device is
592reported busy (works on Linux 2.6) kernels. (Addresses Debian Bug
593#319002)
594
Theodore Ts'o34a26112006-03-29 20:40:23 -0500595Updated French, Dutch, Polish, and Swedish translations. (Addresses Debian
596Bug: #343149, #341911, #300871, #316604, #316782, #330789)
Theodore Ts'o4c02c412005-12-09 19:20:01 -0500597
Theodore Ts'of2b74cd2005-08-22 01:20:23 -0400598Fix use-after-free bug in e2fsck when finishing up the use of the
599e2fsck context structure.
600
Theodore Ts'o34a26112006-03-29 20:40:23 -0500601Fixed spelling mistakes, typos, and otherwise clarified man pages and
602documentation. (Addresses Debian Bugs: #329859, #322188, #316811,
Theodore Ts'o6c094752006-05-29 11:47:25 -0400603#312515, #351268, #357951, #347295, #316040, #368392, #368393, #368394,
604#368179)
Theodore Ts'o4c02c412005-12-09 19:20:01 -0500605
Theodore Ts'of2b74cd2005-08-22 01:20:23 -0400606Fixed various Debian packaging issues --- see debian/changelog for
Theodore Ts'o3285a9c2005-12-10 23:05:30 -0500607details. (Addresses Debian Bugs #317862, #320389, #290429, #310950,
Theodore Ts'o6c094752006-05-29 11:47:25 -0400608#310428, #330737, #330736, #329074, #356293, #360046, #366017, #364516,

Theodore Ts'obae55642006-05-14 17:31:48 -0400610
Theodore Ts'of2b74cd2005-08-22 01:20:23 -0400611
612Programmer's notes:
613-------------------
614
Theodore Ts'o7e2ec012006-04-22 04:29:16 -0400615Update config.guess and config.sub to latest version (2006-02-23) from
616FSF.
617
618Fix asm_types.h type conflicts on AMD 64 platforms. (Addresses Debian
619Bugs: #360661, #360317)
620
Theodore Ts'o34a26112006-03-29 20:40:23 -0500621Fixed the Makefile so that they work correctly on newer versions of
622GNU make (i.e., 3.81).
623
Theodore Ts'of2b74cd2005-08-22 01:20:23 -0400624Add valgrind support to the regression test suites, and eliminate
625false positives from valgrind.
626
Theodore Ts'o4c02c412005-12-09 19:20:01 -0500627Add a regression test suite for the blkid library.
628
Theodore Ts'of2b74cd2005-08-22 01:20:23 -0400629Fix a fencepost error in resize2fs caught by valgrind.
630
Theodore Ts'o4c02c412005-12-09 19:20:01 -0500631Fix compiler warnings about missing memcpy prototypes.
632
633We no longer have the sparc assembly code in the header file any more,
634so we shouldn't set _EXT2_HAVE_HAS_BITOPS_ for the sparc. This would
635break compiles on the sparc architectures when using gcc.
636
637In the libext2fs library, add the new field fs->now which if non-zero
638is used instead of the system time when setting various filesystem
639fields (last modified time, last write time, etc.)
640
641Fix gcc 4.01 complaints by adding a missing #include <string.h> to
642ext2fs.h which is needed since the inline functions use memcpy().
643(Addresses Sourceforge Bug #1251062)
644
645Use BUILD_CFLAGS and BUILD_LDFLAGS instead of CFLAGS and LDFLAGS in
646the build system when building files in the util directory which are
647needed during the build process. This avoids potential problems when
648cross-compiling and some of the options specified in CFLAGS or LDFLAGS
649are not recognized as valid by the host compiler. (Addresses
650Sourceforge Bug #1261547)
651
652Clean up the blkid library by making the superblock and generic i/o
653functions to be more generic. Clean up interface to the probe
654function, and fix memory leak. Finallly, remove an unneeded reference
655to probe.h in the lib/blkid/resolve.c
656
Theodore Ts'o3285a9c2005-12-10 23:05:30 -0500657Add an ext2fs_read_bb_FILE regression test to confirm proper detection
658of invalid block #'s.
659
Theodore Ts'o34a26112006-03-29 20:40:23 -0500660The x86 asm constraints for ext2fs_{set/clear}_bit have been fixed to
661indicate that the the function read/writes the memory location.
662
Theodore Ts'o3285a9c2005-12-10 23:05:30 -0500663Fix various gcc -Wall complaints.
664
665Add a dependency to make sure that the subdirectories are created
666before creating all of the object files, in order to address parallel
667build problem in the library Makefiles. (Addresses Sourceforge Bug:
668#1261553)
669
670Add $(LDFLAGS) to the command line argument when generating an ELF or
671Solaris shared library, to allow cross-compile and other builds that
672might need to specify -L paths to needed libraries. (Addresses
673Sourceforge Bug #1261549)
674
Theodore Ts'obae55642006-05-14 17:31:48 -0400675Add a new feature, EXT2_FEATURE_COMPAT_LAZY_BG, which is initially
676intended for testing purposes. It allows an ext2/ext3 developer to
677create very large filesystems using sparse files where most of the
678block groups are not initialized and so do not require much disk
679space. Eventually it could be used as a way of speeding up mke2fs and
680e2fsck for large filesystem, but that would be best done by adding an
681RO_COMPAT extension to the filesystem to allow the inode table to be
682lazily initialized on a per-block basis, instead of being entirely
683initialized or entirely unused on a per-blockgroup basis.
684
Theodore Ts'o6c094752006-05-29 11:47:25 -0400685Fix backwards compatibility so e2fsprogs will better compile on Linux
6862.0.35 systems.
687
688Make test scripts more robust against locale-related environment variables
689
690Fix type warning problem with sizeof() in ext2fs_open2().
691
692Fix type warning problem with time_t in debugfs.
693
Theodore Ts'of2b74cd2005-08-22 01:20:23 -0400694
Theodore Ts'ofea95ff2005-07-01 17:31:55 -0500695E2fsprogs 1.38 (June 30, 2005)
Theodore Ts'o1f965c82005-06-30 20:06:45 -0400696==============================
697
698Fix blkid's test programs (built with "make check") compile correctly
699even without "configure --enable-blkid-debug".
700
701Fix ia64 core dump bug caused by e2fsprogs running afoul of C99 strict
702type aliasing rules on newer gcc compilers. (Addresses Red Hat
703Bugzilla ##161183.)
704
705Fix com_err library to make it more compatible with recent changes
706made to the com_err library in MIT Kerberos V5 version 1.4.
707(Addresses Sourcefroge Bug #1150146)
708
709General cleanup of messages printed by e2fsprogs programs for grammar,
710consistency, and to make life easier for translators. Fixed a few
711strings containing English that had not been marked as needing
712translations. Removed strings that do not need to be translated, to
713make life easier for translators.
714
715Mke2fs and badblocks will take advantage of a feature in Linux 2.6 to
716test to see if a device appears to be in use instead of just relying
717on /proc/mounts and /etc/mtab. (Addresses Debian Bug #308594).
718
719Fix portability problem in the filefrag program affecting platforms
720where the size of an integer is smaller than the size of a long.
721(Addresses Debian Bug #309655)
722
723Mke2fs will now use a larger journal by default for filesystems
724greater than 4GB. (128 MB instead of 32MB).
725
726Mke2fs will refuse to create filesystems greater than 2**31-1 blocks,
727unless forced. This is to avoid signed vs. unsigned kernel bugs in
728block numbers that still need to be fixed.
729
730The blkid program has a new option which will more efficiently search
731for device when it is known (or expected) that only one matching
732device will be found in the system, such as when doing a lookup by
733UUID.
734
735Debian's e2fsprogs-specific initrd fragment will avoid including
736unnecessary libraries into the initrd ramdisk by unsetting LD_PRELOAD
737and LD_LIBRARY_PATH, and filtering out libraries found in
738/etc/ld.so.preload. (Addresses Debian Bug: #304003)
739
740Fixed a potential portability issue in the blkid programs for
741architectures where the char type is unsigned. (Addresses Sourceforge
742Bug: #1180585)
743
744Fix a bug in filefrag so that it doesn't falsely count an extra
745discontinuity when the first block found is an indirect block.
746(Addresses Debian Bug #307607).
747
748Fix blkid's recognition of cramfs filesystems, and enhance it to be
749able to handle cramfs labels.
750
751Fix debugfs's stat command to not core dump when a filesystem is not
752open.
753
754Fix e2fsck's handling of error conditions caused by the resize inode
755claiming blocks that are also used by other inodes, a filesystem
756corruption which was commonly caused by a bug in Fedora Core 3's
757resize2fs program.
758
759Fixed bug in filefrag which caused it to fail on non-ext2/3
760filesystems. (Addresses Debian Bug: #303509)
761
762If the superblock last mount time indicates that the system clock may
763not be accurate, then e2fsck will omit checking inodes' deletion time
764field for indications of a potential corrupted orphaned inode list.
765(Previously e2fsck only ommited these LOW_DTIME checks when the
766superblock's last write time looked insane.)
767
768Fixed a IA64 core dump bug in the e2p library which affected dumpe2fs.
769(Addresses Debian bug #302200)
770
771Make the blkid library more paranoid about being run from setgid
772programs, and to use __secure_getenv() from libc if it is available.
773
774Fixed spelling mistakes, typos, and otherwise clarified man pages.
775(Addresses Debian Bugs: #304591, #304592, #304594, #304597, #304593
776and Sourceforge Bug: #1189803)
777
778Updated and fixed translations.
779
780Fixed various Debian packaging issues --- see debian/changelog for
781details.
782
783Programmer's notes:
784-------------------
785
786Ext2fs_set_bit(), ext2fs_clear_bit(), and ext2fs_test_bit( have been
787changed to take an unsigned int for the bit number. Negative bit
788numbers were never allowed (and didn't make any sense), so this should
789be a safe change. This is needed to allow safe use of block numbers
790greater than or equal to 2**31.
791
792The compile_et program will avoid recreating generated foo_err.c and
793foo_err.h files if no changes are necessary. The compile_et program
794will also atomically replace these files to avoid a potential parallel
795build race problem on SMP systems. (Addresses Sourceforge Bug:
796#1157933)
797
798Added a new function to the blkid library, blkid_probe_all_new(),
799which only probes newly added disk devices, and change
800blkid_find_dev_with_tag() to use this function so that when a
801requested tag is not found, devices that were previously not checked
802are searched before searching all devices in the system.
803
804Added new functions to the blkid library, blkid_dev_set_search() and
805blkid_dev_has_tag().
806
807E2fsck's problem strings can now use @m and @n as abbrevations for
808"multiply-claimed" and "invalid", respectively.
809
810The e2fsprog.pot file now has an explanation of how the @-expansion
811and %-expansion works, and strings in e2fsck/problem.c which contain @
812characters now have comments in e2fsprogs.pot with the @-expansion to
813make life easier for translators.
814
815Fixed missing return values in the ext2fs library which could cause it
816to return random garbage in certain error conditions.
817
818Allow the current time to be overriden via the E2FSCK_TIME environment
819variable for use in regression tests.
820
821The test scrpit driver program now exits with a non-zero status if
822there any of its test that it ran failed.
823
824Fixed problems with parabuilds on SMP systems. (Addresses Sourceforge
825Bug: #1157933)
826
827Fixed "make check" so that it compiles correctly even when e2fsprogs'
828header files have not be installed in the system include directories.
829(Addresses Sourceforge Bug: #1180572)
830
831Fixed gcc -Wall nits.
832

Theodore Ts'ofd4b28e2005-03-21 22:37:03 -0500834E2fsprogs 1.37 (March 21, 2005)
835===============================
836
837Add support for checking the validity of Extended Attributes stored in
838inodes to e2fsck.
839
840Add support for dumping the contents of large inodes to debugfs,
841including the extended attributes stored in inodes.
842
843Fix mke2fs, e2fsck, debugfs, and the ext2fs_mkdir function so that
844when we create a new inode we make sure that the extra information in
845the inode (any extra fields in a large inode and any ea-in-inode
846information) is initialized correctly. This can take place when
847mke2fs creates the root and lost+found directory, when e2fsck creates
848a new root inode or a new lost+found directory, and when the user uses
849the debugfs write, mknod, or mkdir commands. Otherwise, the newly
850create inode could inherit garbage (or old EA information) from a
851previously deleted inode.
852
853Fixed a bug in e2fsck so it would notice if a file with an extended
854attribute block was exactly 2**32 blocks, such that i_blocks wrapped
855to zero.
856
857Added support to filefrag to detect files which are using the new
858experimental file extents format, and use the non-ext2 algorithm in
859that case. Fixed a bug to avoid reporting a false discontinuity if
860there is one or more unallocated blocks at the beginning of a file.
861
862Duplicated a check for noticing whether or not the number of blocks
863(given a certain blocksize) is greater than 2**32 when the
864BLKGETSIZE64 ioctl is not available to ext2fs_get_device_size(). This
865allows mke2fs to automatically use a larger blocksize when creating a
866filesystem on a very large device when run on systems that do not
867support BLKGETSIZE64.
868
869Fix the I18N build which was broken in e2fsprogs 1.36 because the
870build system had been switched to treat the .gmo files as shipped
871files (for backwards compatibility with systems that have older GNU
872I18N tools installed), but the gen_tarball.in script was still
873removing the .gmo files from the official source distribution.
874
875Fixed various Debian packaging issues --- see debian/changelog for
876details. (Addresses Debian Bugs ##296769, #299341)
877
878Programmer's notes:
879-------------------
880
881Added new functions to the e2p library which convert between a string
882and os_type: e2p_os2string() and e2p_string2os(), and used them to
883make the generated binaries more compact.
884
885Fixed a compile-time error on Darwin systems.
886
887Cleaned up the lib/ext2fs Makefile slightly.
888
889
Theodore Ts'o3eee5e92005-02-05 18:26:03 -0500890E2fsprogs 1.36 (February 4, 2005)
891=================================
Theodore Ts'o2b0dc0a2005-01-09 15:53:09 -0500892
893All of the patches that were applied to Fedore Core 3's
894e2fsprogs-1.35-11.2 have been integrated, although sometimes with a
895lot of bug fixes first. Users of Fedora Core 3 are strongly
896encouraged to upgrade to e2fsprogs 1.36 as soon as possible.
897
898Add support for filesystem with the online resizing via resize inode
899feature. Fixed numerous bugs from the Fedora patches. The Fedora
900patches also didn't bother to do any consistency checking on the
901resize inode, or add any tests to the regression test suite. The "-R
902resize=4g" option to mke2fs was a no-op in the Fedora patches, despite
903being listed in mke2fs's usage message. All of these shortcomings
904have been corrected.
905
906E2fsck can also also fix filesystems trashed by Fedora's resize2fs
907program. In order to do this, the user must run the commands:
908
Theodore Ts'od0a3b462005-05-05 22:57:44 -0400909 debugfs -w /dev/hdXXX -R "features ^resize_inode"
Theodore Ts'o2b0dc0a2005-01-09 15:53:09 -0500910 e2fsck -f /dev/hdXXX
911
912Optionally, the ext2prepare command can be used to re-enable online
913resizing after the filesystem has been fixed.
914
915The fsck program will now accept an optional filedescriptor argument
916to the -C option. (The Fedora version of this patch would sometimes
917cause fsck to ignore a parameter on fsck's command line in some rare
918cases, sigh.)
919
Theodore Ts'odc256972005-01-26 13:20:12 -0500920Make sure e2fsprogs doesn't write garbage into the reserved portion of
921large inodes.
922
923Make sure resize2fs releases the blocks belonging to the old inode
924table blocks when moving the inode table. (Addresses Debian Bug:
925#290894)
926
927Skip the r_resize_inode test if resize2fs is not compiled (due to
928configure --disable-resizer)
929
930E2fsck now checks the summary filesystem accounting information, and
931if any of the information is obviously wrong, it will force a full
932filesystem check. (Addresses Debian Bug #291571)
933
934Fix e2fsck to not complain when the resize_inode feature is enabled,
935s_reserved_gdt_blocks is zero, and there is no DIND block allocated in
936the resize inode.
937
Theodore Ts'o8ceb55f2005-01-28 12:33:01 -0500938Fix e2fsck to note delete symlinks that contain an extended attribute
939after the ext_attr feature flag has been cleared. (Addresses Red Hat
940Bugzilla #146284).
941
Theodore Ts'odc256972005-01-26 13:20:12 -0500942Add new utility program, copy_sparse.c, which is very useful
943for dealing with large sparse files (such as e2image files).
944
945Add support for jnl_blocks[] for debugfs's set_super_value.
946
947Fix filefrag so that it works correctly with sparse files.
948
Theodore Ts'o3eee5e92005-02-05 18:26:03 -0500949Filefrag -v will print first and last blocks.
950
Theodore Ts'odc256972005-01-26 13:20:12 -0500951Add interpretation of OS Creator values for FreeBSD and Lites in mke2fs
952and dumpe2fs.
953
Theodore Ts'o8ceb55f2005-01-28 12:33:01 -0500954Add mke2fs support so that it can support filesystems larger than 4TB
955automatically, by retrying with a 4k blocksize if the device size is
956too big to be expressed using a 1k blocksize. (Addresses Sourceforge
957bug #1106631)
958
Theodore Ts'odc256972005-01-26 13:20:12 -0500959Change blkid to test for NTFS first because Windows sometimes doesn't
960clear enough of the parition to confuse the probing routines into
961thinking the old filesystem type is still valid. (Addresses Debian
962Bug #291990)
963
Theodore Ts'o66fa0de2005-01-11 14:39:55 -0500964Add support for swap partition label and uuid's in the blkid library.
965
Theodore Ts'odc256972005-01-26 13:20:12 -0500966Add support to the blkid library to recognize Oracle ASM volumes.
967
968Make blkid -t display all devices that match the specified criteria,
Theodore Ts'o8ceb55f2005-01-28 12:33:01 -0500969not just the first one, and work more consistently when the blkid
970cache file is not available or set to /dev/null. (Addresses Debian
971Bug #290530 and #292425)
Theodore Ts'odc256972005-01-26 13:20:12 -0500972
Theodore Ts'o2b0dc0a2005-01-09 15:53:09 -0500973Badblocks will now correctly display block numbers greater than
974999,999,999 in its progress display.
975
976The tune2fs program will not allow the user from setting a ridiculous
977number of reserved blocks which would cause e2fsck to assume the
978superblock was corrupt. E2fsck's standards for what is a ridiculous
979number of reserved block has also been relaxed to 50% of the blocks in
980the filesystem.
981
982The blkid library will return vfat in preference to msdos, and ext3 in
983preference to ext2 (if the journalling flag is set) so that mount will
984do the right thing. (Addresses Debian bug #287455)
985
986Mke2fs will now use the -E option for extended options; the old -R
987(raid options) option is still accepted for backwards compatibility.
988Fix a double-free problem in resize2fs. (Red Hat Bugzilla #132707)
989
990Mke2fs will now accept a size in megabytes, gigabytes, and other units
991(via "32m" or "4g" on the command line) if the user finds this more
992convenient than specifying a block count.
993
994Fix an obscure, hard-to find bug in "e2fsck -S" caused by an inode
995cache conherency problem.
996
997Debugfs now supports a new command, set_inode_field, which allows a
998user to manually set a specific inode field more conveniently, as well
999as set entries in the indirect block map.
1000
1001Debugfs's set_super_value command has been enhanced so that the user
1002can set most superblock fields, including the date/time fields and
1003some of the more newsly added superblock fields.
1004
1005E2fsprogs programs now accept an offset to be passed to the file
1006specifiers, via the syntax: "/tmp/test.img?offset=1024".
1007
1008E2fsprogs programs will now accept blocksizes up to 65536; kernel
1009support on the x86 doesn't exist for now, but it can be useful on
Theodore Ts'o8ceb55f2005-01-28 12:33:01 -05001010other architectures with page sizes greater than 4k. There are 2.6
1011kernel patches out there which enable this, but they are of this
1012writing still experimental.
Theodore Ts'o2b0dc0a2005-01-09 15:53:09 -05001013
Theodore Ts'o4ee558f2005-01-19 02:20:04 -05001014The e2image command now takes the -s option which will scramble
1015directory entries for raw image files.
1016
1017Fix a file descriptor leak in the filefrag program.
1018
1019Make sure e2fsck doesn't crash when /proc/acpi/ac_adapter is not
1020present.
1021
Theodore Ts'o2b0dc0a2005-01-09 15:53:09 -05001022Fix bug in debugfs where kill_file would lead to errors when deleting
1023devices and symlinks. (Sourceforge Bugs #954741 and #957244)
1024
1025Fix bug in the blkid library when detecting the ocfs1 filesystem
1026
1027Remove obsolete EVMS 1.x and a.out DLL support.
1028
1029E2fsck will attempt to recover from a journal containing illegal blocks.
Theodore Ts'o48301122004-09-19 08:23:41 -04001030
1031Fixed two potential ordering constraint problems in e2fsck which might
1032cause the filesystem to be corrupted if e2fsck is interrupted during a
1033(extremely narrow) race window. Thanks to Junfeng Yang from the
1034Stanford Metacompilation group for pointing this out.
1035
1036Fixed bug in e2fsck where it would not accurately detect whether or
1037not the system is running on adaptor if the ACPI device representing
1038the AC adapter didn't correspond to the what was used on IBM
1039Thinkpads.
1040
1041Change e2fsck to accept directories greater than 32MB.
1042
1043Fix e2fsck so that a checkinterval of zero disables a time-based check
1044of the filesystem.
1045
1046Debugfs will check the DEBUGFS_PAGER enviroment variable in preference
1047to the PAGER environment variable. (Addresses Debian Bug #239547)
1048
1049Tune2fs will not mark rewrite the superblock if the feature bitmasks
1050are not modified.
1051
1052The debugfs program will set the filetype information when creating a
1053link.
1054
1055Add debugfs -d option to use a separate source of data blocks when
1056reading from an e2image file.
1057
1058Add e2image -I option which allows the e2image metadata to be
1059installed into a filesystem.
1060
1061Fixed bug in the badblocks program which caused "done" to always
1062appear in english even when a translation was available. (Addresses
1063Debian Bug #252836)
1064
1065The blkid program has a new option -o which controls the output format
1066of the blkid program; this is makes blkid more convenient to use in
1067shell scripts.
1068
1069Fix a minor bug in uuid library, which was not using the full 14 bits
1070of clock sequence when generating UUID's.
1071
1072Fix a Y8.8888K problem in the uuid library.
1073
1074Logsave now creates a new session id for itself to avoid getting
1075killed by init whan transitioning between init levels.
1076
1077Change the licensing of the UUID library to be the 3-clause BSD-style
1078license; this allows Apple to use the uuid library in Darwin.
1079
1080Add ocfs and ocfs2 probe support into the blkid library.
1081
1082Fix a memory and file descriptor leak in the blkid library.
1083
1084The blkid library will revalidate the device if the system time is
1085earlier than last verification time of the device, since that
1086indicates that the system time is probably nottrustworthy.
1087
1088The blkid library will override the default location of the blkid.tab
1089file by the BLKID_FILE environment variable, if it is available.
1090
1091Change the getsize functions to use the BLKGETSIZE64 ioctl on Linux 2.6.
1092
1093Add various portability fixes for lame new versions of glibc, Darwin
1094and GNU/KFreeBSD, as well as removing XSI:ism's. (Addresses Debian
Theodore Ts'o2b0dc0a2005-01-09 15:53:09 -05001095Bugs #239934, #264630, #269044, #255589, #289133)
1096
1097Add support for Windows 9x/NT under Cygwin.
Theodore Ts'o48301122004-09-19 08:23:41 -04001098
1099Updated and clarified various man pages. (Addresses Debian Bugs #236383,
Theodore Ts'o2b0dc0a2005-01-09 15:53:09 -05001100 #241940, #238741, #242995, #256669, #268148, #256760, #273679)
Theodore Ts'o48301122004-09-19 08:23:41 -04001101
1102Updated and fixed translations. (Addresses Debian bugs #244105, #262836)
1103
1104Update the rpm spec files so that it works better with Fedora core 2
1105and RH9.
1106
1107Fixed various Debian packaging issues (see debian/changelog). In
1108particular, fixed the Debian initrd scripts. (#241183, #248050,
1109#253595, #247775)
1110
1111
1112Programmer's notes:
1113-------------------
1114
Theodore Ts'o2b0dc0a2005-01-09 15:53:09 -05001115Fixed various gcc -Wall warnings.
Theodore Ts'o48301122004-09-19 08:23:41 -04001116
1117The uuid library now has new functions uuid_unparse_upper() and
1118uuid_unparse_lower() which forces the case of the hex digits to be
1119upper case, or lower case.
1120
1121The build process has been speeded up by enhancing the subst program
1122to update the modtime on the generated files even when the generated
1123file hasn't changed.
1124
1125The uuid library now uses C99 stdint.h types instead of custom types.
1126
1127Updated config.guess and config.sub with newer versions from the FSF.
1128
1129Removed out of date .cvsignore files from the source distribution.
1130
Theodore Ts'o2b0dc0a2005-01-09 15:53:09 -05001131The ext2fs_unlink() function will return an error if both the name and
1132inode number are unspecified, to avoid doing something surprising
1133(such as unconditionally deleting the first directory entry).
1134Directory entries are now deleted by coalescing them with the previous
1135directory entry if possible, to avoid directory fragmentation. This
1136is not an issue with the e2fsprogs suite, but may be a problem for
1137some of the users of libext2fs, such as e2tools.
1138
1139Add support for version numbers of the form "1.36-rc1".
1140
Theodore Ts'o48301122004-09-19 08:23:41 -04001141Fix build of mke2fs.static.
1142
Theodore Ts'odc256972005-01-26 13:20:12 -05001143Add basic ext2fs library support for large (EA in inode) inodes.
1144
Theodore Ts'o48301122004-09-19 08:23:41 -04001145The test_io mechanism can now abort after n reads or writes to a
1146particular block. The block is specified by TEST_IO_BLOCK environment
1147variable, and the read/write count by the TEST_IO_READ_ABORT and
1148TEST_IO_WRITE_ABORT environment variables. The block data is now only
1149dumped if the 0x10 bit is set in TEST_IO_FLAGS.
1150
1151UUID_DEFINE() in the uuid library now creates a static variable, with
1152__attribute__ ((unused)) if we are using GCC, so that UUID_DEFINE can
1153be used in header files.
1154
Theodore Ts'o2b0dc0a2005-01-09 15:53:09 -05001155Add support for the install-strip and install-shlibs-strip targets, as
1156suggested by the GNU coding guielines. "make install" no longer
1157strips the binaries which are installed.
1158
Theodore Ts'o3eee5e92005-02-05 18:26:03 -05001159Remove support for the --enable-old-bitops configure option which was
1160only for very old sparc systems.
1161
1162Remove support for --enable-clear-htree; this was only needed during
1163the early development of the htree patch.
1164
Theodore Ts'o2b0dc0a2005-01-09 15:53:09 -05001165Use Linux-kernel-style makefile output so it is easier to see compiler
1166warnings.
1167
1168Update gettext files to version 0.14.1.
1169
1170Update to use autoconf 2.5x.
1171
1172Improved support for compiling e2fsprogs under dietlibc.
1173
Theodore Ts'o4ee558f2005-01-19 02:20:04 -05001174Make e2fsprogs portable to Solaris and FreeBSD systems.
1175
Theodore Ts'o8ceb55f2005-01-28 12:33:01 -05001176Add blkid_verify(), blkid_get_library_version(), and
1177blkid_parse_version_string() functions to the blkid library.
Theodore Ts'odc256972005-01-26 13:20:12 -05001178
1179Add pkg-config files for e2fsprogs's libraries.
1180
1181Fix "make uninstall" to so that it removes everything that is installed.
1182
Theodore Ts'o3eee5e92005-02-05 18:26:03 -05001183Add a configure --enable-maintainer-mode option which enables the
1184makefile rules to rebuild the configure script from configure.in, and
1185to reubuild the .gmo files in po directory.
1186
1187Drop the sparc assembly bitwise operations; it's less efficient
1188than the GCC 3.4 compile code and triggers compiler warnings on
1189sparc64. Thanks to Matthias Andree for his analysis and suggestions.
1190(Addresses Debian Bug #232326)
1191
Theodore Ts'o48301122004-09-19 08:23:41 -04001192
Theodore Ts'ob70b1162004-02-28 10:52:35 -05001193E2fsprogs 1.35 (February 28, 2004)
1194==================================
1195
Theodore Ts'o48301122004-09-19 08:23:41 -04001196E2fsck has a new -k option, which in conjunction with the -c options,
Theodore Ts'ob70b1162004-02-28 10:52:35 -05001197preserves the existing badblocks list.
1198
Theodore Ts'o48301122004-09-19 08:23:41 -04001199Cleaned up e2fsck's preen-mode messages during the passes 1b, 1c, and 1d.
Theodore Ts'ob70b1162004-02-28 10:52:35 -05001200
1201E2fsprogs will now deal correctly with symlinks that contain
1202extended attribute information, which can be created using SE Linux.
1203(Addresses Debian Bug #232328)
1204
1205Remove a double longjump into an invalid stack frame bug in e2fsck.
1206(This was during an abort sequence, which normally worked on Linux and
1207caused a core dump on other operating systems.)
Theodore Ts'oc4c30b22003-12-07 02:16:43 -05001208
Theodore Ts'o1daf7582004-01-31 22:33:16 -05001209Fix NLS bug in e2fsck, by avoiding trying to expand an empty string
1210(the NLS library will replace "" with the .po header information).
1211
Theodore Ts'oc4c30b22003-12-07 02:16:43 -05001212Fix a bug in mke2fs which caused -T largefile or -T largefile4 to core
1213dump due to a division by zero error. (Addresses Debian bug #207082)
1214
Theodore Ts'o151a7162003-12-26 14:04:33 -05001215Fixed a bug in e2fsck which caused it to incorrectly fix a filesystem
1216when reconnecting a directory requires creating a lost+found
1217directory. (Addresses Debian bug #219640).
1218
1219Fixed a bug where e2fsck would bomb out if a journal needed to be
1220replayed when using an alternate superblock.
1221
Theodore Ts'o48301122004-09-19 08:23:41 -04001222E2fsck will give an extra grace period before actually forcing a check
Theodore Ts'oc4c30b22003-12-07 02:16:43 -05001223if the laptop is running on battery. The next time fsck runs while
1224the system is on the AC mains, or after the grace period is exceeded,
1225the filesystem will be checked. (Addresses Debian bug #205177)
1226
1227E2fsck will inform the user when there are 5 or fewer mounts before a
1228filesystem check will be forced. (Addresses Debian bug #157194)
1229
1230Fix e2fsck's handling of corrupted indirect blocks in the bad block.
1231We now correctly handle the case where there is an overlap between a
1232block group descriptor or a superblock and a bad block indirect block.
1233In the case where the indirect block is corrupted, we now suggest
1234"e2fsck -c".
1235
Theodore Ts'o1daf7582004-01-31 22:33:16 -05001236Fix byte swap bugs in e2fsck that caused the journal backup location
1237in the superblock and symlinks created by SE Linux to be cleared
1238by e2fsck on big-endian machines. (Addresses Debian bug #228723)
1239
Theodore Ts'oc4c30b22003-12-07 02:16:43 -05001240E2fsck -c now replaces the current list of bad blocks with the ones
1241found by badblocks.
1242
1243Fix bugs in e2fsck and tune2fs which could cause a core dump if a
1244non-existent LABEL or UUID specifier is to e2fsck or tune2fs.
1245
1246Fix a potential bug in e2fsck which could cause it to core dump when
1247trying to print the location of the backup superblock.
1248
1249Protect against a potential core dump in e2fsck when printing a
1250message about backup superblocks.
Theodore Ts'o858dd7b2003-08-02 20:48:35 -04001251
Theodore Ts'o6826bde2003-08-21 02:14:44 -04001252Add support for backing up the journal inode location in the
1253superblock. E2fsck will automatically save the journal information in
1254the superblock if it is not there already, and will use it if the
1255journal inode appears to be corrupted. ext2fs_add_journal_inode()
1256will also save the backup information, so that new filesystems created
1257by mke2fs and filesystems that have journals added via tune2fs will
1258also have journal location written to the superblock as well.
1259Debugfs's logdump command has been enhanced so that it can use the
1260journal information in the superblock.
Theodore Ts'oc4c30b22003-12-07 02:16:43 -05001261
1262E2fsck will now update all superblocks when moving the journal inode.
Theodore Ts'o6826bde2003-08-21 02:14:44 -04001263
1264Shrink the size of the e2fsck executable by moving some initialized
1265variables to the BSS segment.
1266
1267E2fsck will avoid printing the ^A and ^B characters which bracket the
1268progress bar when stdout and stdin are a tty device instead of a pipe
1269to another program. (Addresses Debian bug #204137)
1270
Theodore Ts'o151a7162003-12-26 14:04:33 -05001271Debugfs's mkdir command will automatically expand the directory if
1272necessary. (Addresses Debian Bug: #217892)
1273
1274Fixed a bug in debugfs so that copying a file from /dev/null uses the
1275correct mode bits. (Addresses Debian Bug: #217456)
1276
1277If the environment variables DEBUFS_PAGER and PAGER are not set,
1278debugfs now searches for the appropriate pager to use, beginning with
Theodore Ts'o2b5ddd72004-01-24 18:54:41 -05001279/usr/bin/pager, and then falling back to 'more' and 'less'.
Theodore Ts'o1daf7582004-01-31 22:33:16 -05001280(Addresses Debian bug #221977)
1281
Theodore Ts'ob70b1162004-02-28 10:52:35 -05001282Debugfs will now support 2.6 device numbers where the major or minor
1283number may be larger than 255. (Addresses Sourceforge bug #865289)
1284
Theodore Ts'o48301122004-09-19 08:23:41 -04001285Fix debugging printf in resize2fs. (Addresses Debian Bug #271605)
1286
Theodore Ts'o1daf7582004-01-31 22:33:16 -05001287Chattr now stops processing options when it sees '--'. (Addresses
1288Debian bug #225188)
Theodore Ts'o151a7162003-12-26 14:04:33 -05001289
Theodore Ts'o858dd7b2003-08-02 20:48:35 -04001290Fix regression tests so they work correctly when e2fsprogs is compiled
1291with configure --disable-htree.
1292
Theodore Ts'o1daf7582004-01-31 22:33:16 -05001293Fix bug in uuid library when there is no network card and the library
1294is generating a time-based uuid. The random MAC address was not
1295correctly generated to be a multicast address.
1296
Theodore Ts'o858dd7b2003-08-02 20:48:35 -04001297Add compile_et extensions from Heimdall that were missed the first time
Theodore Ts'o48301122004-09-19 08:23:41 -04001298around.
Theodore Ts'o858dd7b2003-08-02 20:48:35 -04001299
1300Fix bug in badblocks when using O_DIRECT; we need to make sure that
1301we're reading from an offset which is page aligned. For read-only and
1302read-write tests, we try to recover after an error so that we can
1303continue reading on page-aligned boundaries. (Addresses Debian Bug
1304#203713)
1305
Theodore Ts'ob70b1162004-02-28 10:52:35 -05001306Badblocks now checks 64 blocks at a time instead of 16. (Addresses
1307Debian bug #232240)
1308
Theodore Ts'o151a7162003-12-26 14:04:33 -05001309Updated and clarified various man pages. (Addresses Debian Bug
Theodore Ts'ob70b1162004-02-28 10:52:35 -05001310#206845, #222606, #214920, #232406)

Theodore Ts'o151a7162003-12-26 14:04:33 -05001312Updated and fixed translations. (Addresses Debian bugs #200086, #214633)
Theodore Ts'o6826bde2003-08-21 02:14:44 -04001313
Theodore Ts'o858dd7b2003-08-02 20:48:35 -04001314Fixed various Debian packaging issues (see debian/changelog).
1315
1316Programmer's notes:
1317-------------------
1318
Theodore Ts'ob70b1162004-02-28 10:52:35 -05001319Fixed a build problem so that e2fsprogs would compile with the
1320--enable-profile option to configure selected. (Addresses Sourceforge
1321bug #811408)
1322
1323Fixed C++ problems with the ext2fs.h header. (Addresses Red Hat
1324Bugzilla Bug #112448)
1325
Theodore Ts'oc4c30b22003-12-07 02:16:43 -05001326Centralize code which calculates the location of the superblock
1327and block group descriptors so that it is in a single library routine.
1328
Theodore Ts'o6826bde2003-08-21 02:14:44 -04001329Added two new functions, ext2fs_file_open2() and
1330ext2fs_inode_io_intern2() which take a pointer to an inode structure.
1331
1332Fix compile_et to output the correct prototype for
1333initialize_xxx_err_table_r() in the header file. (Addresses Debian
1334bug #204332)
1335
1336In the lib/et makefile, make sure com_err.info is deleted on "make clean".
1337
Theodore Ts'o858dd7b2003-08-02 20:48:35 -04001338Fix 64-bit warnings in e2fsprogs pass1b by using inttypes.h if
1339present. This is for when we try stuffing an int into void * pointer.
1340
1341Fix type-punning which can cause gcc 3.x to miscompile code by getting
1342confused about pointer aliasing. ext2fs_getmem(), ext2fs_free_mem(),
1343and ext2fs_resize_mem() all now take a 'void *' instead of a 'void
1344**'. The EVMS code uses an ugly union approach since we don't want to
1345modify the EVMS interfaces.
1346
1347Make sure all Makefiles use $(MAKE) rather than hardcoded "make", to
1348aid build process on systems can use invoke GNU make as "gmake".
1349
Theodore Ts'oc4c30b22003-12-07 02:16:43 -05001350Added regression testing for mke2fs.
1351
1352Fixed gcc -Wall nitpicks.
1353
Theodore Ts'o1daf7582004-01-31 22:33:16 -05001354Fixed various compiler warnings.
1355
1356Add portability fixes for FreeBSD and for using fsctl under Darwin to
1357support ext2 ioctl's.
1358
Theodore Ts'o858dd7b2003-08-02 20:48:35 -04001359
Theodore Ts'o9c7ec172003-07-26 01:03:34 -04001360E2fsprogs 1.34 (July 25, 2003)
1361===============================
1362
1363Fixed a bug introduced in E2fsprogs 1.30 which caused fsck to spin in
1364a tight loop while waiting for a child fsck to exit in some cases.
1365This burns CPU times which slows down the low-level filesystem check.
1366
1367Added code to mke2fs to assure that the default block size for a
1368filesystem is at least as big as the sector size of the device, if it
1369can be determined.
1370
1371Changed mke2fs and resize2fs to round the default size of a filesystem
1372to be an even multiple of the VM pagesize in order to avoid a Linux
1373kernel bug introduced when the storage of the buffer cache was moved
1374into the page cache.
1375
1376Mke2fs will warn the user when creating a filesystem with journaling
1377and a blocksize greater than 4096. (Addresses Debian bug #193773)
1378
1379Fixed a bug in resize2fs which caused it to fail on filesystems with a
1380non-empty bad block list. Resize2fs now discards any blocks on the
1381badblock list which are no longer part of the filesystem as the result
1382of a filesystem shrink. (Note: this means that shrinking and then
1383enlarging a filesystem is no longer a reversible operation;
1384information about bad blocks in the part of the filesystem which is to
1385be chopped off will be lost.)
1386
1387Changed resize2fs so the user can use prefixes to specify the units of
1388the new filesystem size (sectors, kilobytes, megabytes, or gigabytes),
1389and to make the error and informational messages explicitly display
1390the blocksize used by the filesystem, in order to avoid confusion.
1391(Addresses Debian bug: #189814)
1392
1393Added a new debugfs command, dump_unused, which dumps the contents of
1394all unused blocks to stdout. (Useful as an emergency try-to-find
1395deleted data command.)
1396
1397Added a new debugfs command, imap, which prints the location of a
1398specified inode in the inode table.
1399
1400Fixed a bug in the badblocks program which caused it to use one bit of
1401randomness in its non-destructive read/write test, instead of using a
1402full 8 bits of randomness.
1403
1404Added a new option (-t) to badblocks, which allows the user to control
1405the test pattern(s) used when checking a disk.
1406
1407The blkid probe function now more correctly detects UDF filesystems.
1408
1409Fixed a bug in the blkid library which caused it to not update its
1410cache if a filesystem changes from having a label to not having a
1411label.
1412
1413Fixed a bug in the blkid library wihch could avoid an infinite loop
1414in blkid_find_dev_with_tag() if /proc is not mounted and there the
1415/etc/blkid.tab file has not yet been created.
1416
1417Fixed the badblocks program so that the destructive read/write test
1418honors the -c option, and to use O_DIRECT when possible to avoid
1419thrashing the system block buffer cache.
1420
1421Fixed various NLS issues.
Theodore Ts'oc8a40402005-06-05 16:42:20 -04001422 - Added Czech and Swedish translations
Theodore Ts'o9c7ec172003-07-26 01:03:34 -04001423 - Removed testing NYC translation
1424 - Fixed NLS support for message abbrevations in e2fsck
1425 - Remove de-utf.po, since we shouldn't have two versions using different
1426 charset encodings.
1427 - Used ngettext() (abbreivated with the macro P_(str1, str2, n)) to
1428 simplify the statistics reporting in e2fsck.
1429
1430Changed configure.in so that its defaults for *BSD systems no longer
1431build an fsck wrapper, and not to install in /usr/local by default.
1432
1433Fixed some minor spelling errors/typo's in e2fsck and the configure
1434script.
1435
1436Fixed various Debian packaging issues (see debian/changelog).
1437
1438Updated and clarified man pages. (Addresses Debian Bug #195616)
1439
1440Programmer's notes:
1441-------------------
1442
1443Fix gcc -Wall nitpicks.
1444
1445Updated gettext implementation used by e2fsprogs to 0.11.5, and enable
1446NLS support by default. (Added partial workaround for gettext/Darwin
1447incompatibility problems.)
1448
1449Added full MIT KRB5 and Himdall compaibility support to the com_err
1450library and the compile_et program. (Addresses Debian bug #191900)
1451
1452Added the blkid_known_fstype() function to the blkid library, which
1453returns true if it is passed a filesystem type which is recognized by
1454the blkid probing functions.
1455
1456Improved the documentation for the blkid library.
1457
1458Added the ext2fs_get_device_sectsize() function the the ext2fs library, which
1459returns the hardware sector size of a device, if it is available.
1460
1461Added a dependency in the blkid library's .so file to the uuid
1462library, since the former uses the latter. (Addresses Debian bug
1463#194094)
1464
1465Added --with-diet-libc and --disable-evms to the configure script.
1466
1467Fixed a minor memory leak in the badblocks program.
1468
1469Fixed a portability problem in tune2fs --- not all systems have strptime().
1470
1471Fixed a portability problem in debugfs with the use of getopt() more
1472than once. Old-style BSD, new-style BSD, and Linux C libraries all do
1473things differently.
1474
1475Add support Windows support to ext2fs_get_device_size().
1476
1477Added (normally disabled) debugging code to the Unix I/O manager which
1478causes it to disable all userspace caching if the NO_IO_CACHE is
1479defined.
1480
1481Changed the test I/O manager so it can always be linked into e2fsck,
1482mke2fs, and tune2fs if enabled via --enable-test-io-debug to the
1483configure script. The test I/O manager will only print any debugging
1484information if the TEST_IO_FLAGS or TEST_IO_BLOCK environment
1485variables are set, which specifies which I/O operations are logged and
1486a block number to watch, respectively. The log messages are sent to
1487stderr by default, unless a filename is specified via the
1488TEST_IO_LOGFILE environment variable.
1489
1490
Theodore Ts'o71df0dc2003-04-21 16:17:09 -04001491E2fsprogs 1.33 (April 21, 2003)
Theodore Ts'o9c7ec172003-07-26 01:03:34 -04001492===============================
Theodore Ts'o508d7f32003-03-16 20:41:04 -05001493
Theodore Ts'oba142c12003-04-16 00:59:59 -04001494Added a new utility program, logsave, which captures the output of a
1495command in a log file, even if the containing directory hasn't been
1496mounted yet (in which case the it saves the output in memory until it
1497can write out the logfile). This is useful for capturing the
1498output of fsck during the boot sequence.
1499
1500Fixed some portability problems that were causing problems under
1501the Cygwin32 environment.
1502
1503Mke2fs now interprets a negative number to the -b option as a minimum
1504block size.
1505
1506Fixed a bug in mke2fs which was incorrectly checking the argument to
1507the -g option if the default block size was used. (Addresses Debian
1508bug #188319)
1509
1510Fsck now explicitly ignores tmpfs and devpts, and it will complain if
1511it can not find filesystem checkers for jfs, reseirfs, and xfs.
1512
1513E2fsck now updates the global free block and inode counters from the
1514block group specific counters quietly. This is needed for an
1515experimental patch which eliminates locking the entire filesystem when
1516allocating blocks or inodes; if the filesystem is not unmounted
1517cleanly, the global counts may not be accurate.
1518
1519Imported bug fixes to the EVMS plugin from the EVMS 2.0 tree. (EVMS
15202.0 is not yet supported; this only pulled in the bug fixes: fixed
1521possible hangs caused by bugs in calling waitpid, and not setting the
1522pipe to non-blocking mode; also fixed a file descriptor leak; made
1523sure all functions call log entry/exit functions.)
1524
1525Badblocks now flushes its output file as bad blocks are discovered.
1526
1527The uuid library is now more paranoid about assuming the correctness
1528of the /dev/random device; it mixes in a stream of bytes from
1529random/srandom, just in case.
1530
Theodore Ts'o39d38b02003-03-30 23:45:02 -05001531Update Debian files to reflect the fact that I am now the Debian
Theodore Ts'oba142c12003-04-16 00:59:59 -04001532maintainer of e2fsprogs. Other various Debian-specific packaging
1533cleanups.
Theodore Ts'o39d38b02003-03-30 23:45:02 -05001534
1535Move the source tarball generation functions from the top-level
1536makefile to the util/gen-tarball script.
1537
1538Updated the Turkish .po translation file.
1539
Theodore Ts'o1daf7582004-01-31 22:33:16 -05001540Added Heimdal and MIT krb5 extensions to the com_err library to make
Theodore Ts'o39d38b02003-03-30 23:45:02 -05001541it more compatible with com_err libraries from those distributions.
1542
1543Changed dumpe2fs to always display the superblock fields relating to
1544the journalling and/or directory indexing feature even if those
1545features are not enabled.
1546
Theodore Ts'o508d7f32003-03-16 20:41:04 -05001547Updated and clarify copyright statement vis-a-vis alpha releases of
1548e2fsprogs.
1549
1550The ss library will now try to dynamically link to the readline
1551library and use it if it is present in the system. This means that
Theodore Ts'oba142c12003-04-16 00:59:59 -04001552the debugfs program now has line editing and history features. The
1553SS_READLINE_PATH environment variable is used to find a readline or
1554readline-compatible library.
Theodore Ts'o3809bf12003-03-07 01:09:57 -05001555
Theodore Ts'oe5dced72003-03-15 04:28:17 -05001556E2fsck now finds most duplicate filenames (all when rebuilding all
1557directories via the -D option) and offers to delete or rename
1558duplicate filenames/directory entries. (Addresses Debian Bug #176814).
1559
1560Fix bug in e2image. When writing out a raw image file, include data
1561blocks from symlinks that do not store the symlink within the inode.
1562
Theodore Ts'o3809bf12003-03-07 01:09:57 -05001563Fix bug in resize2fs which incorrectly moved the block and inode
1564bitmaps for sparse superblock filesystems and incorrectly marked
1565blocks as in use. (Addresses Debian bug #174766)
1566
1567Added a new shared library, the blkid library, which efficiently
1568allows fsck, mke2fs, e2fsck, and tune2fs to be able to look up LABEL
1569and UUID filesystem specifiers without needing to search all of the
1570devices in the system. Instead, the device is looked up in a cache
1571file, and then verified to make sure the blkid cache is correct.
1572
1573Tune2fs and e2label will accept LABEL=xxx and UID=yyy specifiers for
1574the device name, using the blkid library. (Addresses Debian bugs
1575#166048, #179671)
1576
1577Fsck now supports backslash escapes in /etc/fstab so that \040 can be
1578used for spaces in device labels.
1579
1580Removed 32-bit limitations for debugfs's dump command.
1581
1582If the user specifies a large number of inodes, Mke2fs will
1583automatically adjust the number of blocks per group to find a valid
1584set of filesystem parameters.
1585
1586Add workaround to detect broken MD devices where when some of the
1587underlying devices are marked read-only, writes to the MD device are
1588silently dropped. E2fsck will detect if there is an attempt to run
1589the journal twice, and abort with an error if this is the case.
1590(Addresses IBM Bugzilla bug #1226)
1591
1592E2fsck will print an error if more than one of the -p/-a, -n or -y
1593options are specified.
1594
1595E2fsck will fix HTREE corruptions in preen mode, without stopping the
1596boot process. This is needed because the 2.4 ext2 filesystem
1597accidentally had the INDEX_FL backwards compatibility code removed.
1598
1599Mke2fs no longer creates filesystems with the dir_index flag set by
1600default; the user has to specifically request it.
1601
1602Update and clarified various man pages. (Addresses Debian bugs

1609
1610Fix various gcc -Wall nits.
1611
1612Fixed a lot of portability problems that caused e2fsprogs not to build
Theodore Ts'oe5dced72003-03-15 04:28:17 -05001613successfully under Solaris and Apple/Darwin.
1614
1615Fixed a Makefile dependency to allow building e2fsprogs using parallel
1616make jobs.
Theodore Ts'o3809bf12003-03-07 01:09:57 -05001617
1618Changes to create a subset distribution which consists only of the
1619et, ss, uuid, and blkid libraries. The configure script and top-level
1620makefile were changed to support working with a subset distribution.
1621
Theodore Ts'oba142c12003-04-16 00:59:59 -04001622Removed EXT2_FEATURE_RO_COMPAT_BTREE_DIR mention of since it's not
1623actually used, and might people who are looking for
1624EXT2_FEATURE_COMPAT_DIR_INDEX, which is in use.
1625
Theodore Ts'o508d7f32003-03-16 20:41:04 -05001626Updated debian files to fix a number of Lintian warnings.
1627
1628Updated config.guess and config.sub with newer versions from the FSF.

1634==================================
1635
1636Fixed a bug in the Unix I/O routines which caused needless writebacks
1637of clean blocks from the unix_io cache (they were erroneously marked
1638as being dirty, so they were getting written back to disk before
1639getting evicted from the disk cache). This was harmless, but it
1640significantly slowed down e2fsck.
1641
1642Made some other minor optimizations to the Unix I/O routines to save a
1643small amount of CPU time.
1644
1645Updated internationalization files.

1649==================================
1650
1651Update EVMS ext2fsim plugin with EVMS 1.2. (We still support
1652compiling the fsim plugin with EVMS 1.0 and 1.1.) Add better error
1653handling for child process that die unexpectly. Add a hack to force
1654mkfs to create filesystems that won't cause problems with hardware
1655that has 2k or 4k minimum blocksize requirements. Read from child
1656processes in non-blocking mode, so that the GUI continues to update.
1657
1658Fix e2fsck so that it returns the appropriate exit code when the root
1659filesystem has been changed, so that system's rc scripts will be told that
1660the system needs to be rebooted.
1661
1662Fix a bug in ext2fs_flush/ext2fs_close; when the MASTER_SB_ONLY flag
1663was set, some of the descriptor blocks that should have been written
1664out were getting skipped.
1665
1666Changed e2fsck to force out changes to the backup copies of the
1667superblock and block group descriptors when important changes are made
1668to those data structures.
1669
1670Fix a bug where e2fsck could erroneously mark a filesystem as being
1671clean if a check of dirty filesystem is interrupted with a ^C. (Bug
1672introduced in e2fsprogs 1.28.)
1673
1674If journal debuging is enabled using --enable-jbd-debug, the debugging
1675level is now set via the E2FSCK_JBD_DEBUG environment variable.
1676
1677If byteswapping support is disabled using configure --disable-swapfs,
1678skip the tests which depend on byte-swapping, so that "make check"
1679won't bomb out.
1680
1681Lshattr will now display the indexed directory flag. Also, some of
1682the more esoteric compression flags are supressed unless compression
1683support has been enabled.
1684
1685Update man pages.
1686
1687
Theodore Ts'o5d823a42002-11-01 02:13:53 -05001688E2fsprogs 1.30 (October 31, 2002)
1689=================================
1690
1691When resizing a filesystem, and inodes need to moved, resize2fs will
1692update the inode's ctime field, and the mtime field of the containing
1693directories, so that incremental backups using dump/restore will work
1694correctly.
1695
1696In order to avoid spurious errors, e2fsck wil check the last
1697superblock write time to determine whether or not it can safely use
1698the LOW_DTIME checks to determine if there are inodes on the orphan
1699inode linked list that had somehow gotten disconnected. (Addresses
1700Sourceforge bug #620980)
1701
1702Partition in /proc/partitions that being with the string "lvm" are
1703considered real partitions even if they do not end with a number.
1704
1705Fixed a bug in the the uuid generation function, where if /dev/urandom
1706is not present, but /dev/random is, and there isn't sufficient
1707entropy, the get_random_byte function could spin a loop forever.
1708
1709E2fsck, mke2fs, etc. will now reliably notice when image files are
1710mounted using the loopback interface. (Addresses Sourceforge bug
1711#619119)
1712
1713When flushing buffers (as is done by badblocks, for example) check to
1714see if the BLKFLSBUF ioctl succeeds, and if so, avoid using the
1715FDFLUSH ioctl which causes the MD device driver which causes confusing
1716syslog messages about obselete ioctl messages. (Addresses Sourceforge
1717bug #545832).
1718
1719Debugfs's write command now checks to see if the destination filename
1720exists before creating it. (Addresses Sourceforge bug #478195.)
1721
1722When installing man pages, search for compressed man pages using all
1723commonly used compression extensions (i.e., .Z, .gz, .bz2, etc.)
1724
1725Fixed a bug in fsck where multiple filesystems specified on the
1726command were not being checked in parallel due to a logic bug
1727introduced to support the FSCK_MAX_INST environment variable.
1728
1729We have added a new superblock field, s_mkfs_time, which indicates
1730when a filesystem was created. It is set via mke2fs, and printed out
1731by dumpe2fs, but is not actually touched by the kernel.
1732
1733Dumpe2fs has been made more robust by not aborting if there is an
1734error reading the block/inode bitmaps; instead it will still print out
1735the location of the block/inode bitmaps and inode table.
1736
1737Add support for the an alternative block group descriptor layout which
1738allows for on-line resizing without needing to prepare the filesystem
1739in advance. (This is the incomat feature flag meta_bg.)
1740
1741Add support for storing default mount options in the superblock, so
1742that the filesystem can be mounted with specific mount options without
1743needing to specify them on the mount command line or in the /etc/fstab
1744file.
1745
1746Add support for a new inode flag, which is to be used for indicating
1747the top of directory hierarchies for the Orlov block allocator.
1748
1749Fix e2fsck so that if it creates the lost+found directory, it does so
1750with the more apporpriate permissions of 0700. Also change
1751mklost+found so that it also creates the directory 0700.
1752
1753Fixed format bug in e2fsck if NLS is in use.
1754
1755Add a German translation for e2fsprogs's NLS support.
1756
1757Fixed e2fsck so that it more handles BAD_BLOCK_IN_INODE_TABLE even at
1758the beginning of the inode table. This won't matter much, since if
1759there is a bad block at the beginning of the inode table, the root
1760directory won't be available. But at least e2fsck won't crash in this
1761case.
1762
1763Fixed endian problems in the htree code for e2fsck and debugfs.
1764
1765When byte-swapping a filesystem on a PPC architecture, byte-swap the
1766bitmaps since the historical big-endian ext2 variant had byte-swapped
1767bitmaps, and the ext2fs library assumes this. This fixes the
1768regression test suite on PPC machines.
1769
1770Fix e2image so that it handles a bad block in the inode table
1771appropriately.
Theodore Ts'od5e78102002-09-30 11:33:36 -04001772
1773E2fsck now uses a more sophisticated algorithm to salvage corrupted
1774directories that recovers more information in the corrupted directory
1775block.
1776
1777E2fsck now performs additional consistency checks on indexed (HTREE)
1778directories.
1779
1780Fix bug where efsck might get confused about whether a completely
1781empty directory block is an empty leaf block or an interior htree
1782node. This could cause e2fsck to get confused into think that a valid
1783indexed directory was corrupted.
1784
1785E2fsck no longer creates an empty directory entry at the end of a
1786directory block when optimizing a directory. This would cause some
1787earlier versions of the dxdir kernel code to corrupt the directory
1788when attempting to split a node containing an empty directory entry.
1789
1790E2fsck could sometimes in rare circumstances leave the indexed flag
1791set after a small directory was optimized by compressing it instead of
1792indexing it. (This should never happen in real life, since
1793directories that small wouldn't have been indexed, but better safe
1794than sorry.)
1795
1796E2fsck now only updates the master superblock in all cases. This
1797slightly shortens its run time.
1798
1799Ext2ed can deal with directory entries of length 0; previously it
1800would get stuck in an infinite loop.
1801
1802Fsck now has support for reiserfs volumes when parsing LABEL= and UUID=
1803specifiers. (Sourceforge patch #613447)
1804
1805Badblocks will now work correctly on read-only devices such as
1806CD-ROM's. (Sourceforge patch #600451)
1807
Theodore Ts'o5d823a42002-11-01 02:13:53 -05001808Updated and clarified man pages. (Addresses Debian bug #167108)

1812===================================
1813
1814Fixed a bug in e2fsck which could corrupt a directory when optimizing
1815it (via the -D option) or rebuiliding the hash tree index with a 1 in
1816512 probability, due to a fence post error.
1817
1818Fixed a bug in the LVM support code which caused LABEL='xxx' not to
1819work correctly.
1820
1821Mke2fs now enables the directory indexing flag by default. (Since
1822this is a compatible feature flag, it's safe to do so.)
1823
1824Tune2fs will support setting the directory indexing feature flag. It
1825will automatically set up the default hash algorithm and hash seed
1826fields in the superblock.
1827
1828If the bone-headed user enters the root filesystem twice in
1829/etc/fstab, the -R option which skips the root filesystem will skip
1830all of them. (Addresses Debian bug #159423). Note! This is not a
1831precedent for dealing intelligently with any other kind of doubled
1832entry in /etc/fstab!
1833
1834
1835Programmer's notes:
1836-------------------
1837
1838Removed perror declaration in lib/et/internal.h. All modern systems
1839can be expected to define perror() these days. Besides, the lib/et
1840code wasn't using perror at all anyway. :-)

Theodore Ts'ob7bad612002-08-31 03:00:33 -04001843E2fsprogs 1.28 (August 31, 2002)
1844================================
1845
1846Add support for the Hashed-Tree Directory Indexing to e2fsck. Support
1847for setting the htree flag is not included yet, although it can be
1848manually turned on via the debugfs program.
1849
1850Clarified e2fsck error message which is printed when it cannot find
1851sufficient contiguous block when relcating filesystem metadata.
1852
1853Added support for building an EVMS plugin module for ext2/3. This
1854module is substantially the same as the EVMS module shipping with EVMS
18551.1, with one or two bugfixes. E2fsprogs can also build this plugin
1856for use with EVMS 1.0 (which did not include the ext2 plugin module),
1857if the configure --enable-old-evms flag is given.
1858
1859Fsck will search through EVMS volumes when trying to resolve
1860filesystem specifications such as LABEL=xxx or UUID=xxx.
1861
1862Added a new utility program, /sbin/findfs, which will return
1863filesystem specifications such as LABEL=xxx or UUID=xxx, and prints
1864the device name.
1865
1866Update and clarified various man pages. (addresses Debian Bug #145044,
1867#146437, #131350, #151990, #144621, #141938)
1868
1869If there are no filesystems specified on fsck's command line, fsck now
1870treat that as if the -As options were given. Previously it would
1871simply do nothing. (Addresses Debian Bug #153102)
1872
1873Mke2fs no longer treats a failure to be able to clear the MD signature
1874at the end of the filesystem as a fatal error. (Addresses Debian Bug
1875#155007)
1876
1877The e2p library functions (which are used by lsattr and chattr) now
1878double check to make sure the file is a regular file or directory
1879before attempting to use the ext2 ioctls. Some device drivers
1880unfortunately respond to the ext2 ioctl's with unknown behaviour.
1881(Addresses Debian Bug #152029).
1882
1883The extended attribute handling has been updated to correspond with
1884the latest V2 bestbits ACL code.
1885
1886Fixed bug in e2fsck which caused it to not clear the dtime field when
1887processing truncated inodes on the orphan list. This could cause data
1888loss(!) if a filesystem is rebooted before a truncate has been
1889committed.
1890
1891E2fsck now uses red/black trees in pass1b, which removes some O(n**2)
1892algorithms. This makes e2fsck much faster in the case of severely
1893corrupted filesystems where a large number of blocks are claimed by a
1894large number of inodes. (Thanks to the 2.5 IDE device driver for
1895inspiring this work.)
1896
1897Resize2fs has been significantly sped up when shrinking and expanding
1898a filesystem by a very small number of blocks (for example, when EVMS
1899is converting a partition to be an EVMS legacy volume).
1900
1901Added a new option to e2fsck, -D, which will optimize or compress all
1902of the directories in the filesystem.
1903
1904E2fsck now catches SIGINT and SIGTERM to make sure it will can
1905properly clean up and only exit at safe points. Fsck will pass
1906SIGINT/SIGTERM to its child processes, and wait until they have all
1907exited before it exits.
1908
1909The uuid parsing code in the uuid library now properly complains when
1910an illegally formated uuid is presented to it. (Addresses Debian bug
1911#152891)
1912
1913Restrict use of the 2.4 setrlimit ABI f*ckup to kernels between 2.4.10
1914and 2.4.17, since the workaround can cause problems when using a 2.4
1915kernel with an old version of glibc built with the 2.2 headers.
1916
1917Fixed a bug in mke2fs where it wasn't properly clearing the initial
1918superblock used by other filesystems. (Addresses Debian bug #147256.)
1919
1920Added support for the synchronous directory feature written by Andrew
1921Morton.
1922
1923The debugfs program can delete directories using the rmdir command.
1924
1925Add support for 8k and 16k filesystems (for systems with page sizes
1926that are greater or equal to 8k or 16k, respectively). Note that
1927these filesystems can not be mounted on x86 systems, or other systems
1928with only 4k page sizes, due to limitations in the current Linux VM
1929code.
1930
1931Resize2fs requires that the filesystem state be valid and have no
1932errors; otherwise, e2fsck -f must be run first. (Previously it simply
1933required that the last fsck time be greater than the last mount time.)
1934
1935Configure now defaults the man pages directory to /usr/share/man on
1936Linux systems.
1937
1938E2fsck now offers to truncate inodes which contain too many blocks (so
1939that i_blocks would overflow. Also fixed handling of large sparse
1940files.
1941
1942E2fsck now more completely checks for symlink validity, including
1943requiring NULL termination and length checks.
1944
1945E2fsck will offer to try forcing a disk write to remap a bad block
1946after finding a read error when reading a filesystem metadata block.
1947
1948Fixed a bug in debugfs which caused the -b and -s options to crash
1949debugfs, as well as breaking the testb, setb, and clearb functions.
1950
1951Added a bmap command to debugfs which calculates the logical to
1952physical block mapping for a particular inode.
1953
1954Fixed a bug in code which checked to see if a device was mounted which
1955sometimes (rarely) failed in the case of a plain file.
1956
1957Fixed a bug in resize2fs where when it reported an error, it would
1958print a message erroneously indicating that the filesystem had been
1959resized before it aborted.
1960
1961When resizing a plain file which is smaller than the requested size,
1962resize2fs will attempt to extended the file so that programs like
1963e2fsck will not complain that the file is too small.
1964
1965Resize2fs will print the actual new size of the filesystem when it is
1966finished resizing.
1967
1968Fixed a bug in debugfs where "ls -l" would report incorrectl file type
1969information on big-endian systems.
1970
1971
1972Programmer's notes:
1973-------------------
1974
1975Fixed collisions with C++ reserved words.
1976
1977Added portability fixes for building e2fsprogs on the HURD and AIX.
1978
1979Added the ext2ed program for creation of test cases. (ext2ed has many
1980limitations and bugs which make it unsuitable for production use.)
1981
1982The ext2fs_read_dir_block2 and ext2fs_write_dir_block now take a new
1983flag, EXT2_DIRBLOCK_V2_STRUCT, which will will reverse when the
1984name_len field is byte swampped on big-endian machines, since in the
1985V2 structure, name_len is a char field which is doesn't need to be
1986byte swapped --- except if an old-style kernel had byte-swapped the
1987name_len field as part of the V1 structure.

1991==============================
1992
1993The warning messages for mke2fs now go to standard error.
1994
1995Fixed to make sure "make check" runs all of the test programs with
1996LD_LIBRARY_PATH set, so that we test the libraries in the build tree.
1997
1998The mke2fs program checks the boot sector for the BSD disk label, and
1999avoids erasing it if it is there.
2000
2001Fixed a bug in e2fsck which caused it to core dump if the journal
2002inode was missing when it was supposed to be there.
2003
2004E2fsck now prints ranges in pass 5 when printing deltas for the block
2005and inode bitmaps.
Theodore Ts'oafa14ba2002-03-05 03:31:06 -05002006
2007Debugfs's "ls -l" command now will print out the file type information
2008in the directory entry.
2009
2010Create man pages and hard links for fsck.ext3 and mkfs.ext3. If
2011mke2fs is invoked as mkfs.ext3, create the filesystem with a journal.
2012
2013Debugfs can now examine the experimental directory indexing
2014information.
2015
Theodore Ts'oa471ac52002-03-05 03:37:06 -05002016Fixed bug in debugfs which caused it to core dump if modify_inode is
2017called without an open filesystem.
2018
2019The debugfs lsdel command now runs its output through a pager first.
2020
Theodore Ts'oafa14ba2002-03-05 03:31:06 -05002021When installing manual pages, remove the compressed manual pages first.
2022
2023Synchronized with Debian's packaging information for e2fsprogs-1.26-1.
2024
2025Fix the 2.4 resource limitation workaround introduced in 1.26 which
2026actually broke things on mips32, sparc32, and Alpha platforms.
2027
Theodore Ts'oa471ac52002-03-05 03:37:06 -05002028Updated the I18N code so that calls to setlocate(LC_CTYPE, 0) are made
2029(which is required by the newer libintl libraries).
2030
Theodore Ts'oafa14ba2002-03-05 03:31:06 -05002031Programmer's notes:
2032-------------------
2033
Theodore Ts'oa8e77242002-03-08 03:12:14 -05002034Fixed various gcc -Wall complaints.
2035
Theodore Ts'oafa14ba2002-03-05 03:31:06 -05002036Fixed a few memory leaks in the e2fsck journaling code, and in the
2037ismounted code checking for a swap device.
2038
2039Add new inode I/O abstraction interface which exports an inode as
2040an I/O object.
2041
2042Exported ext2_file_flush as a public interface.
2043
2044In ext2_file_write, we now mark the buffer void * argument as a const, since ext2_file_write doesn't modify the buffer.
2045
2046Lots of small random portability fixes to make e2fsprogs build under
2047AIX --- even without the 5L compatibility toolkit, and even using the
2048uber-crippled AIX native C compiler.

Theodore Ts'o06987392002-02-03 01:36:54 -05002051E2fsprogs 1.26 (February 3, 2002)
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05002052=================================
Theodore Ts'ocd1a79a2001-11-27 03:36:42 -05002053
Theodore Ts'o446314f2001-12-24 15:22:27 -05002054Dumpe2fs will keep going now if the bad block inode can't be read.
2055(Previously it stopped with a fatal error.)
2056
2057E2fsck will now give an opportunity to run the journal even if the
2058recovery flag is not set. This is the default behaviour if e2fsck is
2059using a backup superblock, since the needs_recovery flag will never be
2060set in the backup superblock copies.
2061
2062E2fsck now automatically finds the backup superblock/group descriptors
2063even when the primary superblock is completely destroyed for 2k and 4k
2064filesystems. (Previously it just guessed/assumed that we were dealing
2065with a 1k filesystem in that case, and users had to manually specify
2066the backup superblock number.)
2067
2068Fixed a bug in e2fsck where it dereferences a null pointer when there
2069is a problem opening a filesystem in preen mode.
2070
2071E2fsck now handles external journals correctly; previously it trashed
2072the external journal device if the journal needed to be replayed.
2073
2074Work around ulimit incompatibility problem caused by recent 2.4
2075kernels; the unix IO module will automatically try to set any resource
2076limits to be infinite on startup.
2077
Theodore Ts'ocd1a79a2001-11-27 03:36:42 -05002078Fixed a bug in e2fsck where it wasn't allocating a new block or inode
2079bitmap if it wasn't present and the blocksize was 2k or 4k.
Theodore Ts'o9c7ec172003-07-26 01:03:34 -04002080 (Addresses Debian Bug #116975)
Theodore Ts'ocd1a79a2001-11-27 03:36:42 -05002081
2082E2fsck will check and fix botched ext3 V1 to V2 superblock updates by
2083clearing the new V2 fields if they do not make sense or if the ext3
2084superblock is version 1 superblock.
2085
2086E2fsck will automatically relocate the ext3 journal from a visible
2087file (i.e., /.journal) to an hidden inode if the filesystem has been
2088opened read/write. This allows the users to add a journal while the
2089filesystem is mounted, but the next time the system is rebooted, the
2090journal file will disappear. This avoids problems with backups,
2091stupid operators with superuser bits, etc.
2092
2093Fix a bug in fsck where it would not support a filesystem type of
2094"auto" if the device was specified in terms of LABEL=xxx or UUID=xxx.
2095
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05002096Fsck now supports fstab entries of the form "ext3,ext2". It will also
2097automatically identify reiserfs filesystems.
2098
2099The number of processes spawned by fsck can now be limited using the
2100FSCK_MAX_INST environment variable.
2101
Theodore Ts'o446314f2001-12-24 15:22:27 -05002102Fsck now searchs the LVM proc hierarchy to find logical volumes which
2103should be searched for UUID and label information.
2104
Theodore Ts'ocd1a79a2001-11-27 03:36:42 -05002105Work around a bug in 2.4.10+ kernels by trying to unset the filesize
2106limit if at all possible, when opening a block device. (The filesize
2107limit shouldn't be applied against writes to a block device.)
2108
Theodore Ts'o446314f2001-12-24 15:22:27 -05002109In mke2fs and e2fsck, specifying the -c option twice will now do
2110a read/write test on the disk. Update the man pages to encourage
2111using the -c option, and to discouraging running badblocks separately,
2112since users tend to forget to set the blocksize when running
2113badblocks.
2114
Theodore Ts'ocd1a79a2001-11-27 03:36:42 -05002115Mke2fs now automatically clears the immutable attribute on a
2116pre-existing .journal file left over from a previous failed attempt to
2117add a journal to an alreadyy-mounted filesystem.
2118
2119Fixed mke2fs's exit codes to consistently indicate when the mke2fs
2120operation failed.
2121
Theodore Ts'o446314f2001-12-24 15:22:27 -05002122Mke2fs now creates the lost+found directory with permissions of 0700,
2123so that files that had previously lived in protected directory are
2124safe if they get dropped in lost+found and the system administrator
2125doesn't deal with immediately. (Addresses Debian #bug 118443)
2126
2127Mke2fs and e2fsck (and all programs that use the
2128ext2fs_check_if_mounted function) will now properly identify that a
2129device is mounted, even in cases where devfs has confused things with
2130multiple devices names with the same identity, or if a dim-witted
2131system administrator has done something stupid like creating device
2132file aliases in their home directory. Also now checks for swap devices
2133by using /proc/swaps. (Addresses Debian bug #106622)
2134
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05002135Added a new option (-T) to tune2fs which sets the time a filesystem
2136was last checked.
2137
Theodore Ts'ocd1a79a2001-11-27 03:36:42 -05002138Speed up e2image when creating sparse raw image files by optimizing
2139away excess lseek() system calls.
2140
2141Fix support of large (> 2GB) files when used as a filesystem in
2142mke2fs, tune2fs, debugfs, and findsuper.
2143
2144Debugfs's stat and icheck commands now properly deals with large (>
21452GB) files.
2146
2147Debugfs's set_super_value command now prints out the list of valid
2148superblock fields which can be set using the command.
2149
Theodore Ts'o446314f2001-12-24 15:22:27 -05002150Debugfs's rm and kill_file command now updates the superblock free block
2151and inode counts, thus keeping the filesystem consistent.
2152
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05002153Debugfs's lsdel command now takes an optional argument which allows
2154the user to only see the most recently deleted files.
2155
2156A new command (undel) was added to debugfs which automates
2157undeleting a deleted inode and linking it back to a directory.
2158
2159Debugfs's ls command now takes a new option, -d, which lists
2160deleted directory entries.
2161
2162Debugfs's testb, freeb, setb, and find_free_block commands now take an
2163optional count argument.
2164
Theodore Ts'ocd1a79a2001-11-27 03:36:42 -05002165Add support for a new ext2 file attribute, EXT2_NOTAIL_FL, which will
2166be used to signal that a particular inode should not be eligible for
2167tail-merging --- this is needed for programs like LILO.
2168
2169The findsuper (an unreleased, uninstalled utility program) has been
2170improved to add extra validity checks and to add a progress meter.
2171(It is still an unsupported program; the officially supported way to
2172recover from a trashed partition table is to use gpart; findsuper is
2173for wizards only. :-)
2174
2175Debugfs was fixed to compile with "configure --disable-swapfs".
2176
Theodore Ts'o446314f2001-12-24 15:22:27 -05002177Cleaned up various manual pages. (Addresses Debian bug #119624, #120171)
Theodore Ts'ocd1a79a2001-11-27 03:36:42 -05002178
2179Added new translation file for Turkish.
2180
Theodore Ts'o446314f2001-12-24 15:22:27 -05002181Programmer's notes:
2182-------------------
2183
2184Fix general gcc -Wall complaints.
2185
2186E2fsprogs (mostly) works with the dietlibc.
2187
2188The programming texinfo file has been expanded to include description
2189of additional libext2fs functions. (Still not compeltely done, but a
2190lot of the more important functions have been documented.)
2191
2192Added a umask structure to struct_ext2_filsys, which currently only
2193modifies the behaviour of ext2fs_mkdir(), but if we add any file
2194creation functions to libext2fs, we should also make sure they respect
2195the umask setting.
2196
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05002197The build-rpm script was fixed to be a bit more safe.
2198
2199The tests' Makefile now has a way of automating test case creation
2200for e2fsck, using "make testnew".
2201
2202Created a new function, ext2fs_dir_iterate2 which passes more
2203information to the callback function (identical to the one used by
2204ext2fs_dblist_dir_iterate). The directory iterator functions take a
2205new flag, DIRENT_FLAG_INCLUDE_REMOVED, which will return deleted
2206directory entries. If the directory entry is deleted, the callback
2207function will be called with the entry paraemter set to
2208DIRENT_DELETED_FILE.
2209
2210Added new functions, ext2fs_inode_alloc_stats and
2211ext2fs_block_alloc_stats, which takes updates block/inode allocation
2212statistics in the bitmaps, block group descriptors, and superblock
2213when inodes or blocks are allocated or deallocated.

Theodore Ts'od08a4ce2001-09-20 09:47:42 -04002216E2fsprogs 1.25 (September 20, 2001)
2217===================================
2218
2219This is primarily a bug-fix release; no new features were added, but
2220there are a number of embarassing bug fixes and cleanups applied.
2221
2222Fix a bug mke2fs which causes stack garbage to be written to disk when
2223zapping disk sectors. (This bug could cause mke2fs to core dump for
2224some kernels, I suspect with security enhancement patches.)
2225
2226Remove unneeded #include of <linux/config.h> which was breaking
2227building e2fsprogs on the Hurd. (Addresses Debian bug #112414.)
2228
2229Updated tune2fs man page to reflect the fact that adding or removing a
2230journal doesn't require running e2fsck.
2231
2232Remove use of AC_REQUIRE from autoconf which had been used to prevent
2233AC_CANONICAL_HOST from being called twice; unfortunately this causes
2234recent autoconf to bomb out since they don't allow AC_REQUIRE to be
2235used outside of autoconf macros. Fortunately, it doesn't seem to be
2236necessary any more, anyway.
2237
2238E2fsck will now not fall back to an alternate superblock if the user
2239specifies the superblock location explicitly on the command-line.
2240This allows easier recovery from a situation where the primary
2241superblock and block groups are slightly corrupted, but the backup
2242superblocks are completely broken.
2243
2244Fix problem which caused compile_et and mk_cmds to blow up if
2245e2fsprogs was in a directory with a pathname that contained spaces.
2246
2247We are now more paranoid about checking the entry in /etc/mtab to make
2248sure the filesystem is really mounted, since some broken distributions
2249(read: Slackware) don't initialize /etc/mtab before checking non-root
2250filesystems. (Slackware also doesn't check the root filesystem
2251separately, and reboot if the root filesystem had changes applied to
2252it, which is dangerous and broken, but there's nothing I can do about
2253that.)
2254
2255Make UUID library C++ friendly by adding appropriate extern "C"
2256declarations and using const in the function declarations.
2257
2258Fix up the com_err texinfo file so that it can product a valid info
2259file (previously, it could only be used to generate paper
2260documentation using texinfo.tex).
2261
2262
Theodore Ts'ofb707752001-09-04 15:00:37 -04002263E2fsprogs 1.24a (September 2, 2001)
2264===================================
2265
2266Fix brown-paper bug in mke2fs which caused it to segfault when
2267printing the version string.
2268
2269
Theodore Ts'o109624a2001-08-31 00:59:55 -04002270E2fsprogs 1.24 (August 30, 2001)
2271================================
2272
2273Revert the BLKGETSIZE64 support, since for some distributions, this
2274ioctl has been used by an unofficial kernel patch to update the last
2275sector on the disk, and this was causing disk corruption problems as a
2276result.
2277
2278Mke2fs is now more careful about zapping swap space signatures and
2279other filesystem/raid superblock magic values so that programs like
2280mount who try to use hueristics to determine the filesystem type of a
2281partition are less likely to be confused.
2282
2283E2fsck will no longer complain if the the mode of EXT2_RESIZE_INO is a
2284regular file (since Andreas Dilger's on-line resizing tools will set
2285its mode bits).
2286
2287Fixed some minor texinfo, man pages nits for spelling errors,
2288texinfo warnings, etc. (Addresses Debian bug #110621.)
2289
2290E2fsprogs program no longer print the filesystem version number
2291(i.e. 0.5b), since it only confuses people and doesn't serve any real
2292purpose.
2293
2294E2fsck will once again compile under libc5, since it will supply its
2295own version of strnlen if necesssary.
2296
2297mke2fs and tune2fs will allow the use of UUID= or LABEL= specifiers
2298when specifying the external journal device. tune2fs will also search
2299devices looking for the externla journal debice when removing.
2300
2301E2fsprogs 1.23 (August 15, 2001)
2302================================
Theodore Ts'od1ef5c32001-07-20 12:35:11 -04002303
2304Add initial support for extended attributes (EA); e2fsck will
Theodore Ts'o6c0a0412001-07-23 00:23:52 -04002305correctly handle a filesystem with EA's and check the EA blocks for
2306corruptions.
2307
Theodore Ts'od494bba2001-08-09 06:14:42 -04002308E2fsck's symlink sanity checking has been cleaned up. It now checks
2309the i_size value of fast symlinks, and checks for immutable flags
2310being set of symlinks, etc.
2311
Theodore Ts'oc4ac9e12001-08-15 21:02:23 -04002312E2fsck now offers to clear inodes which are special files that have a
2313non-zero i_blocks or i_size field. (The i_size field check was in the
2314previous version of the code, but due to a bug it didn't offer to
2315clear the inode unless i_size and i_size_high were both non-zero.)
2316
Theodore Ts'od494bba2001-08-09 06:14:42 -04002317E2image can now create "raw" image files, which only contain the
2318filesystem metadata placed in a spare file so that e2fsck, dumpe2fs,
2319debugfs, etc., can be run directly on the raw image file.
Theodore Ts'obf16d102001-07-27 22:20:06 -04002320
2321Add support for the 64-bit block device patches.
2322
2323Fixed bugs in creating external journals with a 1k blocksize.
2324
Theodore Ts'od494bba2001-08-09 06:14:42 -04002325Add initial support for external journals (so long as the external
2326journal only supports a single filesystem) in e2fsck.
2327
2328Remove requirement for needing to run fsck on a filesystem after
2329removing a journal (either internal or external).
2330
Theodore Ts'obf16d102001-07-27 22:20:06 -04002331The man pages now document how to create and manage external journals.
Theodore Ts'od1ef5c32001-07-20 12:35:11 -04002332
2333Speed up the check of an ext3 filesystems by avoiding a needless flush
2334of all of the superblock and block group descriptors.
2335
Theodore Ts'od494bba2001-08-09 06:14:42 -04002336Speed up creating an internal journal using tune2fs in the case where
2337the filesystem has a lot blocks already allocated.
2338
Theodore Ts'oc4ac9e12001-08-15 21:02:23 -04002339Tune2fs has been fixed to make sure that only error messages go to
2340stderr, and normal message go to stdout. (Addresses Debian bug #108555)
2341
Theodore Ts'od494bba2001-08-09 06:14:42 -04002342Fixed a minor bug in mke2fs; if -O none is passed to mke2fs, it will
Theodore Ts'oc4ac9e12001-08-15 21:02:23 -04002343now not set the sparse_super feature. (Addresses Debian bug #108165)
Theodore Ts'od494bba2001-08-09 06:14:42 -04002344
Theodore Ts'od1ef5c32001-07-20 12:35:11 -04002345Add support in fsck for the filesystem type "auto".
2346
Theodore Ts'oc4ac9e12001-08-15 21:02:23 -04002347Fsck -A will not try to interpret device names for filesystems which
2348have a pass number is 0. (Addresses Debian bug #106696).
2349
2350Fsck prints a warning message if now valid filesystems are passed to
2351it. (Addresses Debian Bug #107458.)
2352
Theodore Ts'o9249d982001-07-20 18:14:10 -04002353E2fsck now gives an explicit warning if there filesystem still has
2354errors at the end of the run. (Addresses Debian bug #104502)
2355
Theodore Ts'od494bba2001-08-09 06:14:42 -04002356E2fsck will set the EXT2_ERROR_FS flag if the journal superblock
Theodore Ts'oc4ac9e12001-08-15 21:02:23 -04002357reflects an error. E2fsck will also not run the orphan list if the
2358filesystem contains errors, since the orphan list might be corrupted.
Theodore Ts'od494bba2001-08-09 06:14:42 -04002359
2360E2fsck now prints the number of large files when given the -v option.
2361
2362Fixed minor memory leaks in e2fsck.
Theodore Ts'obf16d102001-07-27 22:20:06 -04002363
Theodore Ts'oc4ac9e12001-08-15 21:02:23 -04002364Some minor man pages updates. (Addresses Debian bug #30833, #108174)
Theodore Ts'o9249d982001-07-20 18:14:10 -04002365
Theodore Ts'od1ef5c32001-07-20 12:35:11 -04002366
Theodore Ts'o19d6b542001-06-23 00:13:09 -04002367E2fsprogs 1.22 (June 22, 2001)
2368==============================
2369
2370Fixed a bug in e2fsck's handling of orphan inodes which are special
2371files (i.e., block/character device files, named FIFO's, etc.).
2372
2373Fixed a bug accidentally introduced in e2fsprogs 1.21 which caused
2374tune2fs to fail at adding a journal to a mounted filesystem.
2375
2376Fixed a few big-endian bugs in e2fsprogs
2377 * The directory block functions were accidentally reporting
2378 some directories as corrupted when they weren't.
2379 * If e2fsprogs is compiled --disable-swapfs, the C language
2380 equivalents weren't being included for big-endian platforms.
2381 (Fixes Debian bug #101686).
2382
2383Fixed a Hurd compilation problem. (Addresses Debian bug #101361)
2384
2385Programmer's notes:
2386-------------------
2387
2388Use platform independent method of defining the BLKFLSBUF and FDFLUSH
2389ioctls, and allow them to be defined for non-i386 platforms.
2390
2391The uuid.h header file is now protected against multiple inclusions.
2392
2393E2fsprogs is now being developed using BitKeeper. Changed the test
2394scripts to deal with BK's stripping CR characgters from text files,
2395and changed the top-level Makefile.in to avoid including BitKeeper
2396files when generating the source tarball.
2397
2398
Theodore Ts'ob90b8262001-06-15 22:54:34 +00002399E2fsprogs 1.21 (June 15, 2001)
2400==============================
Theodore Ts'o767de092001-06-02 01:20:18 +00002401
Theodore Ts'ob90b8262001-06-15 22:54:34 +00002402Added new configure flags which allow a subset e2fsprogs to be built;
2403this is most useful for boot floopies, since the resulting shared
2404libraries and programs are slimmed down by removing features that
2405aren't necessary for a boot floppy. The new flags that were added
2406are: --disable-swapfs, which removes support for byte swapping old
2407legacy PPC/68k filesystems, --disable-debugfs, which removes support
2408for debugfs from the libext2fs library, --disable-imager, which
2409removes support for the e2image program, and --disable-resizer, which
2410removes support for resize2fs.
2411
2412E2fsck now prints the number of mounts or days elapsed since the last
2413check when e2fsck is forced to check an otherwise clean filesystem.
2414
2415Tune2fs now prints an informative message about how often a filesystem
2416will be checked when adding a journal to the filesystem, to remind the
2417user that he/she may want to adjust those parameters using tune2fs
2418-c/-i.
2419
2420Worked around hurd brain-damage which causes e2fsck to sometimes
2421believe a filesystem is the root filesystem based on device numbers
2422(since Hurd doesn't have dev_t's, which is arguably a POSIX.1
2423violation).
2424
2425Fixed a bug introduced in 1.20 which caused e2fsck to abort with an
2426erroneous error with the -F option was specified.
2427
2428Fixed a ext3 recovery bug in the revoke handling; synchronized with
Theodore Ts'oc05b5522001-06-08 12:03:36 +00002429ext3 0.7a.
2430
Theodore Ts'o767de092001-06-02 01:20:18 +00002431Fixed two bugs in e2fsck's handling of dup block handling, dealing
2432with relatively uncommon edge cases: a directory with an indirect
2433block which is claimed by another file, and when the last inode in the
2434filesystem has blocks claimed by another file.
2435
Theodore Ts'o5a9c0362001-06-02 04:55:57 +00002436E2fsck now checks to see if the i_size field of a fast symlink is too
2437big, and offers to clear the symlink if so.
2438
2439E2fsck now checks to see if i_size_high of special files is non-zero,
2440and offers to clear i_size_high.
2441
Theodore Ts'o767de092001-06-02 01:20:18 +00002442Fix e2fsck's handling of incompatible journal flags so that the user
2443has chance to abort, and then has the option to clear out the journal
Theodore Ts'oe3338452001-06-14 07:11:33 +00002444entirely. (Addresses Debian bug #98527.)
Theodore Ts'o767de092001-06-02 01:20:18 +00002445
Theodore Ts'ob90b8262001-06-15 22:54:34 +00002446Fixed a bug in fsck which could cause it to core dump if a mix of
2447standard and non-standard device names are used in /etc/fstab.
2448(Debian bug #100559)
2449
Theodore Ts'oc05b5522001-06-08 12:03:36 +00002450Fixed a bug in debugfs which caused read errors when copying a file to
2451not be noticed.
2452
Theodore Ts'ob90b8262001-06-15 22:54:34 +00002453The debugfs set_super_value command can now modify the s_lastcheck field.
2454
Theodore Ts'oc05b5522001-06-08 12:03:36 +00002455Fixed a bug in lsattr and chattr which was accidentally introduced in
24561.20 to support > 2GB files; both lsattr and chattr wasn't reading
2457directories correctly because the change modified the layout of struct
2458dirent to be incompatible with the libe2p shared library.
2459
Theodore Ts'ob90b8262001-06-15 22:54:34 +00002460Cleaned up the mke2fs manual page and included a discussion about why
2461it's good to periodically check the filesystem even when journaling is
2462enabled.
2463
Theodore Ts'o767de092001-06-02 01:20:18 +00002464Programmer's notes:
2465-------------------
2466
2467Fix general gcc -Wall complaints.
2468
2469The types needed by the ext2 header files are now provided by
2470lib/ext2fs/ext2_types.h, instead of include/asm/types.h.
2471
Theodore Ts'oc05b5522001-06-08 12:03:36 +00002472Integers are now preferred to longs when trying to find a 32-bit type
Theodore Ts'ob90b8262001-06-15 22:54:34 +00002473in ext2_types.h. Also, if linux/types.h has already been defined,
2474don't try to redefine the types.
Theodore Ts'oc05b5522001-06-08 12:03:36 +00002475
Theodore Ts'o767de092001-06-02 01:20:18 +00002476Fixed make depend script so that it automatically corrects the
2477pathname cleanups performed by make -M, so I don't have to fix them up
2478by hand.
2479
2480Fixed the d_loaddump test case to be more robust, and not depend on
2481bash'isms.
2482
2483Removed debugfs's dependence on pread(), which was accidentally
2484intrudced in e2fsprogs 1.20
2485
Theodore Ts'oc05b5522001-06-08 12:03:36 +00002486Fixed a performance bug in the libext2fs's icount routine; the size
2487estimate of the icount array was incorrectly being calculated.
2488
Theodore Ts'ob90b8262001-06-15 22:54:34 +00002489Removed use of the badblocks compatibility functions in the e2fsprogs
2490programs.
2491
2492Added paranoia code which protects against strange cases where /etc
2493isn't on the root filesystem, or if /etc/mtab doesn't exist.
2494
2495The header file ext2_types.h is now installed.
2496
2497Autoconf is used to determine when we are on big-endian machines,
2498instead of doing run-time tests, to save a few bytes of code.
2499
2500The ext2fs_mark_generic_bitmap and ext2fs_unmark_generic_bitmap
2501functions are no longer inline functions, which saves space and
2502doesn't really cost any real performance.
2503
2504The ext2fs library no longer depends on the e2p library. (What need
2505there was of it --- namely, fsetflags, was coded in-line).
2506
2507Fixed the makefile so that lib/ext2fs/ext2_types.h is generated even
2508when the user is stupid and tries compiling the package using "make
2509install" as root.
2510
2511Miscellaneous code cleanups:
2512 * Added missing files from Makefile.in's SRCS file, so that
2513 their dependencies would be properly calculated.
2514 * Removed redundant code
2515 * Fixed comments in code
2516 * Removed no-longer unneeded argsused #pragma.

Theodore Ts'o5a009bb2001-05-21 05:27:45 +00002519E2fsprogs 1.20 (May 20, 2001)
Theodore Ts'o31d1d0c2001-05-11 05:15:06 +00002520=============================
Theodore Ts'o5570a652000-08-21 01:23:39 +00002521
Theodore Ts'o31d1d0c2001-05-11 05:15:06 +00002522Add support for replaying the ext3 journal purely in user mode,
2523including handling the orphaned inode list. Used code contributed by
2524Andreas Dilger, with bug fixes and the orphaned inode handling done
2525by Theodore Ts'o.
2526
2527The mke2fs and tune2fs programs can create or modify a filesystem to
2528include an ext3 journal. Tune2fs also can be used to remove an ext3
2529journal from a filesystem.
Theodore Ts'o5570a652000-08-21 01:23:39 +00002530
2531E2fsck will now check for the existence of a linked list of orphan
2532inodes in the superblock, and clear those inodes before starting the
2533rest of the filesystem check (but after the journal playback).
2534
Theodore Ts'o31d1d0c2001-05-11 05:15:06 +00002535E2fsck now validates the file descriptor passed to the -C option,
2536which saves against the completion bar getting written to an
2537unexpected location, such as the disk being checked. (Debian
2538bug/wishlist #55220)
2539
2540E2fsck will now bump the filesystem revision number from zero to one
2541if any of the compatibility bits are set.
2542
2543Fixed a bug where a badly corrupted directory on a big endian system
2544could cause e2fsck to die with a bus error. The
2545ext2fs_read_dir_block() and ext2fs_process_dir_block() functions in
2546the ext2 library now does alignment sanity checks on the rec_len field
2547of the directory entry before using it.
2548
2549The ext2 library has been enhanced to make tune2fs safe to run on
2550mounted filesystems. (Users could usually get away with using tune2fs
2551on mounted filesystems before, but with the advent of ext3 and
2552journaling, it became important to make tune2fs was *really* safe for
2553use even when the filesystem being modified is mounted.) E2label is
2554now implemented by tune2fs using an argv[0] dispatch, so that e2label
2555is also now safe for use on mounted filesystems.
2556
2557Added a new program, e2image, which creates a backup of critical ext2
2558filesystem data structures. The generated image file can be examined
2559using dumpe2fs and debugfs. In the future, e2fsck will be able to use
2560the image file to help recover very badly damaged filesystems.
2561
2562Fixed a number of LFS bugs in e2fsck; very, very large (> 2**42) files
2563no longer cause e2fsck to bomb out. Also treat files > 2GB as being
2564large file when deciding whether or not the filesystem has large files.
2565
2566Fixed lsattr and chattr so that they work correctly on large files.
2567(Fixes Debian bug #72690.)
2568
2569Removed limitation in get_device_size() which imposed a one terrabyte
2570filesystem limitation. (Most 2.2 kernels still have a signed int
2571problem which cause 1 TB block device limitation. Fortunately, the
2572kernel patches to fix this are much easier than fixing the 2TB
2573limitation in the kernel. :-)
2574
2575A max_mount_count of zero is now treated as if no mount count were
2576set. (Previously, no mount count was indicated by using -1, and a
2577mount count of zero caused e2fsck to always be run.)
2578
Theodore Ts'o77648562001-05-14 13:04:44 +00002579Mke2fs supports two new filesystem types largefile and largefile4.
Theodore Ts'o31d1d0c2001-05-11 05:15:06 +00002580
2581Mke2fs now adds some randomness in s_max_mount_count so that multiple
2582filesystems won't be all checked at the same time under normal
2583operations.
2584
Theodore Ts'o5570a652000-08-21 01:23:39 +00002585Fixed bug in the progress bar printing code which could cause e2fsck
2586to core dump on an illegal filesystem.
2587
Theodore Ts'o31d1d0c2001-05-11 05:15:06 +00002588Fixed bug in fsck which could allow more than one instance of e2fsck
2589to be printing a progress bar. (Debian bug #65267)
2590
Theodore Ts'o5570a652000-08-21 01:23:39 +00002591Fsck using a UUID or a LABEL specifier will work even if devfs is
2592compiled into the kernel and not mounted. If the pathnames in
2593/proc/partitions are incorrect, fsck will search /dev for the correct
2594device (using the new ext2fs_find_block_device library function).
2595Fsck now also checks the RAID devices first so that they are properly
Theodore Ts'o31d1d0c2001-05-11 05:15:06 +00002596found when they are in use. Support has also been added to support
2597additional IDE disks and the DAC 960 device names. (Debian bug #94159)
2598
2599Fixed a bug in fsck which caused it not deal properly with 16
2600byte long filesystem labels.
Theodore Ts'o5570a652000-08-21 01:23:39 +00002601
Theodore Ts'o5a009bb2001-05-21 05:27:45 +00002602Fsck's -t option has been made a lot more flexible. The semantics for
2603what happens if a comma-separated list to fsck has been regularized,
2604and it is now possible to filter what filesystems will get checked
2605based what is in the filesystem's fstab entry's option field. (Debian
2606bug #89483.)
2607
Theodore Ts'o5570a652000-08-21 01:23:39 +00002608The dumpe2fs program can now print out the group description
2609information in hex, and also prints the location of the superblock and
2610block group descriptor for those block groups that have them.
2611
2612Mke2fs now clears the ext2 superblock before it starts creating a
2613filesystem, so that the superblock magic number is only written if the
2614filesystem creation process successfully completes.
2615
2616The debugfs program's stat command now pretty-prints the blocks used
2617by an inode so that it's more compact and informative.
2618
2619The debugfs stats command now uses the same libe2p code (which is used
2620by dumpe2fs) to print the superblock header information. This is more
2621complete, and it avoids a bit of code duplication.
2622
2623Added a new debugfs command, set_super_value (ssv) which allows the
2624user to set arbitrary superblock fields.
2625
Theodore Ts'o31d1d0c2001-05-11 05:15:06 +00002626Debugfs was extended to support inode numbers in hex (by prefixing
2627them with 0x), and so that modify_inode can set the inode generation
2628number. Also, there is now a new function command called logdump
2629which will dump an ext3 journal.
2630
2631Fixed a bug in debugfs so that quitting out of the pager doesn't kill
2632debugfs.
2633
2634Debugfs's dump command now stops immediately upon reporting a disk
2635read error. (Fixed a bug in ext2fs_file_read library routine which
2636caused debugfs not to stop.) (Debian bug #79163)
2637
2638On systems with /proc/mounts (mainly Linux systems), /proc/mounts is
2639checked before /etc/mtab is used, since /proc/mounts is more likely to
2640be accurate.
2641
2642Added portability fixes for Solaris and Linux/ia64.
2643
2644Various manual pages were clarified and cleaned up. (Fixed debian
2645bugs #63442, #67446, and #87216)
2646
Theodore Ts'o5570a652000-08-21 01:23:39 +00002647
2648Programmer's notes:
2649-------------------
2650
2651The e2fsck message printer now supports %Iu and %Ig, which will print
2652out the inode's user and group owners, respectively.
2653
Theodore Ts'o31d1d0c2001-05-11 05:15:06 +00002654E2fsprogs now includes its own version of include/linux/ext2_fs.h, so
2655that no longer dependent on the system having the correct version of
2656the kernel header files.
2657
Theodore Ts'o5570a652000-08-21 01:23:39 +00002658Added a new function to libext2, ext2fs_find_block_device(), which
2659searches the system (i.e., /dev, /devfs, /devices) for a pathname to a
2660device given its device number.
2661
Theodore Ts'o31d1d0c2001-05-11 05:15:06 +00002662Added a new function to libext2, ext2fs_sync_device, which centralizes
2663all of the places which might try to use the BLKFLSBUF or FDFLUSH
2664ioctls (and usually failing to define them since the system header
2665files don't usually do this for us, and we're trying to avoid usage of
2666kernel include files now).
2667
Theodore Ts'o5570a652000-08-21 01:23:39 +00002668Added new utility programs in tests/progs: random_exercise and
2669hold_inode. They aren't built by default; they're useful for
2670exercising ext3 filesystem code.
2671
Theodore Ts'o31d1d0c2001-05-11 05:15:06 +00002672Added a new ext2 filesystem flag, EXT2_FLAG_SUPER_ONLY, which causes
2673the filesystem close functions to only update the superblock, and to
2674not touch the block group descriptors. Needed by tune2fs when
2675modifying a mounted filesystem.
2676
2677Got rid of struct ext2fs_sb and replaced it with the standard struct
2678ext2_super_block from include/linux/ext2_fs.h. Note: this may break
2679source (but not binary) compatibility of some users of the ext2
2680library. Those applications should just simply do a global search and
Theodore Ts'o7d614e32001-06-13 23:49:05 +00002681replace of struct ext2fs_sb with struct ext2_super_block, and include
2682the new header file <ext2fs/ext2_fs.h> which defines it.
Theodore Ts'o31d1d0c2001-05-11 05:15:06 +00002683
2684The ino_t type has been renamed ext2_ino_t to protect applications
2685that attempt to compile -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64, since this
2686inexplicably changes ino_t(!?). So we use ext2_ino_t to avoid an
2687unexpected ABI change.
2688
2689The Makefiles have been reworked so that "make check" can be run from
2690the top-level Makefile.
2691
2692Fix general gcc -Wall complaints and removed dead code.
2693
2694Remove use of NOARGS, because we assume everyone does ANSI C these
2695days.
2696
2697Added build-rpm script from sct.
2698
2699New functions ext2fs_image_{inode,super,bitmap}_{read,write} added
2700to support e2image.
2701
2702New function ext2fs_flush_icache which must be called if the
2703application program modifies the inode table blocks without going
2704through ext2fs_write_inode() interface.
2705
2706New ext2fs_check_mount_point() function, which will return the mount
2707point of a device if mounted.
2708
2709The io_channel abstraction now has an optional interface,
2710io_channel_write_range, which allows specific byte ranges to be
2711written.
2712
2713The unix_io IO channel now supports write-through caching, so that
2714journal creation is more efficient.
2715
2716Added x86 assembly language routines to support byte swapping, to
2717reduce executable size.
2718
2719Fixed bug in the utility program subst so that it's possible to
2720replace a substitution variable with a zero-length string.
2721
2722Fixed numbering e2fsck pass1 problem numbers; an extra zero had
2723slipped into some of the problem number.
Theodore Ts'o5570a652000-08-21 01:23:39 +00002724
Theodore Ts'ob777e262000-07-27 01:39:23 +00002725E2fsprogs 1.19 (July 13, 2000)
2726==============================
Theodore Ts'oab146762000-07-07 04:37:35 +00002727
2728Release the resize2fs program since the timeout before it could
Theodore Ts'o006ea712000-08-21 03:39:49 +00002729be released under the GPL has finally expired.
Theodore Ts'oab146762000-07-07 04:37:35 +00002730
2731Add experimental support needed for the ext2 compression patches.
2732This requires compiling e2fsprogs with the --enable-compression flag
2733to the configure script.
2734
2735Added ext3 journalling support. E2fsck will run the journal (if
2736necessary) by temporarily mounting the filesystem. /sbin/fsck.ext3 is
2737installed as a symlink to e2fsck. Fsck has been taught about ext3,
2738and treats it the same as ext2 in terms of the progress bar logic.
2739Dumpe2fs will display the superblock journaling information if the
2740filesystem has a journal. The ext2 library will now permit opening an
2741ext3 filesystem with the recovery flag set. This is necessary for
2742on-line dump's to work correctly, but there may be issues with this
2743working well since ext3 is much less agressive about syncing blocks to
2744the filesystem, since they're safe on the journal.
2745
2746Tune2fs and e2fsck have been changed to allow the mount_count check to
2747be disabled by setting max_mount_count to -1. (This was already
2748supported by the kernel.)
2749
2750Create a symbolic link for fsck.ext3, since the e2fsprogs utilities
2751are used for ext3 as well.
2752
2753Added internationalization support for e2fsprogs; must be enabled
2754by passing --enable-nls to configure.
2755
2756Always use the provided ext2fs header files to insulate ourselves from
2757kernel version changes. Which include files are used by e2fsprogs
2758have also been cleaned up to improve portability.
2759
2760Limit the number of times that e2fsck updates the progress bar so that
2761people who are booting using a 9600 baud console don't get swampped by
2762too many updates.
2763
2764Improved the loop detection algorithm in e2sck's pass #3 so that it is
2765much, much faster for large filesystems with a large number of
2766directories.
2767
2768The memory footprint for e2fsck is now slightly smaller than before.
2769
2770E2fsck now checks if special devices have a non-zero size, and offers
2771to clear the size field if it finds such an inode.
2772
2773E2fsck now checks if special devices have the append-only flag set,
2774and offers to clear the inode.
2775
2776E2fsck now properly handles some "should never fail" cases during a
2777bitmap copy in pass5.
2778
2779E2fsck now properly prints control characters in filenames as ^A .. ^Z.
2780
Theodore Ts'o31d1d0c2001-05-11 05:15:06 +00002781E2fsck now calculates the correct location of the backup superblock in
2782the case of filesystem blocksizes > 1k.
2783
2784Fixed a bug in e2fsck's calculation of the number of inodes_per_block
2785which normally didn't cause problems under most filesystem parameters,
2786but could cause a valid superblock to be rejected in extreme cases.
2787Other checks for validating superblock values were made more
2788stringent.
2789
Theodore Ts'oab146762000-07-07 04:37:35 +00002790Added non-destructive write testing to the badblocks program, courtesy
2791of David Beattie. The badblocks also now has an option to input the
2792current set of bad blocks, so that known bad blocks are skipped to
2793speed up the badblocks test. There is also a persistent rescan
Theodore Ts'o006ea712000-08-21 03:39:49 +00002794feature which causes badblocks to run until it has completed some
2795number of passes without discovering any new bad blocks.
Theodore Ts'oab146762000-07-07 04:37:35 +00002796
2797Badblocks now checks to see if the device is mounted and refuses to do
2798the tests involving writing to the device if it is mounted. Also,
2799badblocks now allows the number of blocks to be checked to be
2800defaulted to the size of the partition.
2801
2802Fixed a bug in fsck which didn't allow non-root users to be able to
2803check filesystems if there were any LABEL= or UUID= entries in
2804/etc/fstab.
2805
2806The Hurd doesn't support the filetype filesystem feature. The mke2fs
2807program now makes sure that for the Hurd, the filestype feature is
2808turned off. E2fsck will check to see if the filetype feature is
2809turned on for Hurd filesystems, and offer to turn off the feature.
2810
2811Mke2fs now has a safety check to make sure the number of blocks do not
2812exceed 32 bits even on a 64 bit platform.
2813
2814Really fixed a bug in fsck to allow "fsck -As" to run interactive
2815fsck's. (For those people who like to do interactive fsck's in the
2816/etc/rc scripts!?!)
2817
2818Debugfs has a few new features: the rdump command, which will do a
2819recursive dump of a directory and all of its contents, and the lcd
2820command which does a local chdir (much like the ftp command of the
2821same name). In addition, the debugfs program and the open_filesystem
2822command now takes three new options: -b and -s, which allows the
2823blocksize and superblock location to be specified, and the -c option
2824which is used in catastrophic situations where the block group
2825descriptors are corrupt. If the -c option is specified, debugfs will
2826skip trying to read in the block and inode bitmaps.
2827
2828Debufs's lsdel command was fixed to handle bad blocks in the inode
2829table.
2830
2831A Y2K bug in debugfs's "ls -l" handling was fixed by switching to use
28324 digit years.
2833
2834General improvements in error messages
2835
2836 - Mke2fs prints a sane error message if the partition size is zero
2837 (usually because the partition table wasn't reread by the
2838 kernel due to the partition being busy), instead of "invalid
2839 argument passed to ext2 library while initializing superblock".
2840
2841 - Fsck now prints more self-explanatory message if an invalid UUID=
2842 or LABEL= specification is passed to it.
2843
2844UUID library changed to use the LGPL.
2845
2846Fixed a bug in the UUID library where very rapid calls to the
2847time-based UUID generator could cause duplicate UUID's to be returned.
2848This was not a problem for e2fsprogs, but it could be a problem for
2849other users of the library.
2850
2851Make the UUID library more robust in the face of missing or an
2852improper /dev/urandom or /dev/random files.
2853
2854Added some random portability fixes for Solaris.
2855
2856Some minor man page updates.
2857
2858Fixed a memory leak in the ss library.
2859
2860
2861Programmer's notes:
2862-------------------
2863
2864We now try to use lseek64 and open64 from the LFS if possible.
2865
2866The 3rd parameter in e2p's print_flags is now a flags word, instead of
2867a boolean option.
2868
2869The mark and unmark bitmap functions now return the previous state of
2870the bit that was being changed, which is useful for some speed
2871optimizations.
2872
2873The following functions have been added to enhance the badblocks list
2874handling in libext2fs: ext2fs_write_bb_FILE, ext2fs_read_bb_FILE2, and
2875ext2fs_badblocks_equal.
2876
2877The ext2 header files now have the latest journalling fields to the
2878superblock.
2879
2880The ext2fs_mkdir function in libext2fs now properly backs out of error
2881conditions robustly.
2882
2883Cleaned up makefiles:
2884 - to cleanly compile with the -j flag.
2885 - so distclean removes all generated files.
2886 - so in case of an error while installing header files, the make aborts.
2887
2888Fix test_script so that it works correctly when compiling in the
2889source directory.
2890
Theodore Ts'o31d1d0c2001-05-11 05:15:06 +00002891The random UUID generation routine has been made slightly better in
2892the case where /dev/random doesn't exist. (Use of randomly-based UUID
2893is still not recommended if /dev/random doesn't exist, however; it's
2894better to use the time/ethernet MAC address UUID in this case.)
Theodore Ts'oab146762000-07-07 04:37:35 +00002895
2896Clean up the build process so it's more friendly in case of missing
2897directories.
2898
2899The ext2fs header file can now be #include'd into C++ programs.
2900
2901The e2p.h header file is now installed.
2902
2903Added workaround to a gawk 3.0.5 bug in lib/ss/mk_cmds.
2904
2905
2906
Theodore Ts'o24ded091999-11-10 15:56:16 +00002907E2fsprogs 1.18 (November 10, 1999)
2908==================================
2909
2910Fix a core dumping bug in e2fsck if an imagic inode is present or
2911(more rarely) if the filesystem is badly corrupted enough that e2fsck
2912has to restart pass 1 processing. E2fsck now closes the filesystem
2913before freeing a large number of its data structures, so in the case
2914of future memory faults, at least the fixed filesystem will be fully
2915written out.
2916
2917If a filesystem doesn't support imagic inodes, and e2fsck discovers an
2918imagic inode, it will offer to clear the imagic flag.
2919
2920E2fsck will now offer to clear the immutable flag on special files
2921(device/socket/fifos) when running it in non-preen mode.
2922
2923E2fsck will now set the filetype when creating /lost+found, and when
2924connected orphaned inodes to /lost+found.
2925
2926Debugfs's ncheck and icheck commands now handles the case where there
2927are bad blocks in the inode table without bombing out.
2928
2929The badblocks list processing code has been made more efficiently for
2930appending a large number of (ordered) badblocks to the badblocks list.
2931
2932Some minor man page updates.
2933
2934Fsck now allows interactive e2fsck's when using fsck -As (not a common
2935mode, but some people like to do this in boot scripts for silly reasons).
2936
2937Programmer's notes:
2938-------------------
2939
2940The internal e2fsck problem code for PR_2_SPLIT_DOT was fixed to meet
2941with the problem code convention.
2942
2943The badblocks list regression test program has been updated to work
2944with previously made API name changes.
2945
2946The ext2fs_free() command now uses the new badblocks API to avoid
2947using the compatibility layer.
2948
2949Added new regression test cases; the run_e2fsck test script now
2950supports the ability for a test case to run a prepratory command
2951before running e2fsck.
2952
Theodore Ts'o28e11941999-10-26 18:17:20 +00002953E2fsprogs 1.17 (October 26, 1999)
2954=================================
2955
2956Fixed nasty typo in fsck which caused parallelized fsck's to go into an
2957infinite loop.
2958
2959Fixed a bug in fsck where it used strncmp to compare a binary UUID,
2960thus potentially causing problems if a binary UUID contained a NULL
2961character.
2962
2963E2fsck now uses stricter checks for directory entries in pass 2:
2964zero-length filenames are not allowed; neither are 8 byte long
2965directory entries.
2966
2967The debugfs "dirty" command now clears the filesystem valid bit.
2968(Previously this just set the dirty-as-in-needs-writing-out-to-disk
2969bit in the in-core superblock image. The new functionality is more
2970what the user expects, and is more useful.)
2971
2972Added a debugging hook to test parallel fsck; if the environment
2973variable FSCK_FORCE_ALL_PARALLEL, then filesystems on the same drive
2974will be checked in parallel when they normally would not be.
2975
2976Programmer's notes:
2977-------------------
2978
2979Fixed some #ifdef's for compilation under the Hurd OS.
2980
2981Fixed minor W2K compatibility problems.
2982
2983Fixed some miscellaneous GCC warnings.
2984
2985
Theodore Ts'o8a31ffe1999-10-23 03:33:15 +00002986E2fsprogs 1.16 (October 22, 1999)
2987=================================
2988
2989Fixed a race condition bug in fsck; when printing a progress bar, if
2990checking multiple filesystems in parallel, it was possible for fsck to
2991send e2fsck a SIGUSR1 signal before e2fsck had installed its signal
2992handler, which would cause it to terminate with a signal 10.
2993
2994E2fsck now properly handles filesystems that have the
2995INCOMPAT_FILETYPE feature turned on. It can be used to convert a
2996filesystem into using or not using FILETYPE feature.
2997
2998E2fsck now properly handles filesystems that have the IMAGIC feature
2999turned on (this is used on Linux AFS servers).
3000
3001The mke2fs program now creates filesystems that have the filetype and
3002sparse_superblock features enabled by default, unless it is run on a
3003pre-2.2 kernel. These features are not supported by a pre-2.2 kernel,
3004so there is now a new flag -O which allows the user to specify with
3005which features she would like to create the filesystem; "mke2fs -O
3006none" will create a filesystsem compatible with 2.0 kernels.
3007
3008The tune2fs program now has a -O option which allows the user to set
3009and reset "safe" filesystem features. Currently, the only ones which
3010allows to be modified are the filetype and sparse_superblock features.
3011Note setting or clearing either feature will require running e2fsck on
3012the filesystem afterwards. (n.b. Clearing the sparse_superblock feature
3013requires that there is enough free space on the filesystem for the
3014extra superblocks which will be created by e2fsck.)
3015
3016Debugfs can now set and print filesystem features in the superblock
3017using the "features" command. Dumpe2fs will print out the complete
3018set of features when listing the superblock.
3019
3020Dumpe2fs has new options -f (force) and -h (header-only).
3021
3022Fixed a bug in e2fsck which could cause the PROGRAMMING ERROR/bonehead
3023message to come up. This could happen when decrementing or
3024incrementing a link count could result in an overflow.
3025
3026Fixed a bug in e2fsck where the block count on the lost+found
3027directory would not be properly incremented when the directory was
3028expanded to the point where an indirect block needed to be allocated.
3029
3030E2fsck now makes some additional sanity checks on the superblock to
3031avoid crashing or giving a memory allocation error if some of the
3032values in the superblock are unresonable (but the superblock otherwise
3033looks valid).
3034
3035Fixed a bug in e2fsck where a very badly corrupted filesystem might
3036require two passes to completely fix the filesystem. This happened if
3037an inode claimed blocks that was part of the filesystem metadata
3038(typically, when garbage was written into an inode table or indirect
3039block, since this kind of filesystem corruption normally doesn't
3040happen otherwise).
3041
3042On the Alpha, glibc declares st_flags although it isn't actually used;
3043the configure script was improved to detect this case so that
3044e2fsprogs can avoid using the non-functional stat field.
3045
3046The manual pages were updated to use a more consistent formatting
3047style consistent with standard Unix man pages. Mke2fs's man page
3048added documentation for a few previously undocumented options.
3049
3050Fixed minor display bugs in tune2fs and mke2fs.
3051
3052Programmer's notes:
3053-------------------
3054
3055Improved portability of e2fsprogs to non-Unix systems (in particular, NT).
3056
3057Added features to parse and print feature strings into the e2p library.
3058(e2p_feature2string, e2p_string2feature, e2p_edit_feature).
3059
3060ext2fs_mkdir() and ext2fs_new_dir_block() now creates directories
3061whose directory entries contain proper filetype information if the
3062filesystem supports it.
3063
3064ext2fs_link() now uses the low 3 bits of its flags parameter to pass
3065the directory entry filetype information. This is used to set the
3066directory entry filetype information if the filesystem supports it.
3067
3068Fixed a bug in ext2fs_expand_dir() where the block count in a
3069directory's inode would not be properly incremented when the directory
3070was expanded to the point where an indirect block needed to be
3071allocated.
3072
3073
Theodore Ts'oa39f3ef1999-07-20 02:02:40 +00003074E2fsprogs 1.15 (July 18, 1999)
Theodore Ts'oe2a99be1999-07-19 15:48:08 +00003075==============================
Theodore Ts'o6d53db31999-07-03 20:52:21 +00003076
3077Add configuration checks so that e2fsprogs will compile cleanly on
3078Linux 2.3 kernels that have renamed i_version to i_generation.
3079
Theodore Ts'oe2a99be1999-07-19 15:48:08 +00003080E2fsck now prints a progress/completion bar (and not just a simple
3081spinner) if the -C0 option is requested or if it receives a SIGUSR1
3082signal. Fsck will automatically manage the (potentially muliple)
3083e2fsck processes to print completion bars if it is given a -C option,
3084with the right thing happening if multiple filesystems are being
3085checked in parallel.
3086
3087Mke2fs now has better automatic hueristics to determine the filesystem
3088parameters to be used for a particular filesystem. Added a new option
3089-T which allows the user to specify how the filesystem is to be used,
3090which helps mke2fs do a better job selecting the filesystem parameters.
3091
Theodore Ts'oa39f3ef1999-07-20 02:02:40 +00003092Mke2fs now creates revision 1 filesystems by default, and with the
3093sparse superblock feature enabled. The sparse superblock feature is
Theodore Ts'o8a31ffe1999-10-23 03:33:15 +00003094not understood by Linux 2.0 kernels, so they will only allow read-only
3095mounts of filesystems with this sparse superblocks.
Theodore Ts'oa39f3ef1999-07-20 02:02:40 +00003096
Theodore Ts'o6d53db31999-07-03 20:52:21 +00003097Fix bug where if /dev/null couldn't be opened (should never happen),
3098e2fsck would hang in a tight loop.
3099
3100Make e2fsck handle the case where /lost+found isn't a directory.
3101
3102E2fsck now uses mallinfo if it exists to get accurate statistics about
3103its memory usage.
3104
3105Fix bug in e2fsck where it wouldn't check to see if a disconnected
3106inode had any problems before connecting it to /lost+found.
3107
3108Add check to e2fsck so it makes sure that total number of inodes in
3109the filesystem is a sane number.
3110
3111Fix fencepost error when clearing an the end of the block bitmap which
3112caused the last block in the bitmap not to get cleared.
3113
3114Cleaned up a number of messages in e2fsck:
3115 * The message "Group's #'s copy of the group descriptor..."
3116 was fixed so that the correct number would be displayed.
3117 * Added missing space in the "disk write-protected" error messsage
3118 * Cleaned up the error message printed when a non-interactive
3119 e2fsck needs to abort a check because the filesystem
3120 appears to be mounted.
3121
3122Added a new command-line utility, uuidgen, which will create and print
3123a UUID.
3124
3125Make debugfs's icheck command more robust by checking to make sure an
3126inode has valid blocks before interarting over the inode's blocks.
3127
3128UUID generation now uses a random-based scheme whenever possible to
3129prevent potential privacy problems.
3130
3131Man pages for all of the UUID functions in the lirbary were added.
3132
3133Fixed bug in fsck so it won't coredump if a filesystem not in
3134/etc/fstab is given to it.
3135
3136Fsck now understands the UUID=xxxx and LABEL=yyyy forms in /etc/fstab
3137that most of the other mount utilities understands.
3138
3139Mke2fs will make a filesystem even if it appears mounted if the force
3140option is given.
3141
3142Dumpe2fs has new command-line options which allow a filesystem expert
3143to specify the superblock and blocksize when opening a filesystem.
3144This is mainly useful when examining the remains of a toasted
3145filesystem.
3146
3147The badblocks program has been updated to display correctly on disks
3148with large block numbers.
3149
Theodore Ts'oe2a99be1999-07-19 15:48:08 +00003150The badblocks program no longer gives spurious errors when errors
3151occur on non-block boundaries, which is common if the blocksize is
3152larger than 1k.
3153
Theodore Ts'o6d53db31999-07-03 20:52:21 +00003154Mke2fs will sync the disk device every MKE2FS_SYNC block groups if the
3155MKE2FS_SYNC environment variable is set. This is to work around a VM
3156bug in the 2.0 kernel. I've heard a report that a RAID user was able
Theodore Ts'oa39f3ef1999-07-20 02:02:40 +00003157to trigger it even using a 2.2 kernel, but hopefully it will not be
3158needed for most Linux 2.2 users.
Theodore Ts'o6d53db31999-07-03 20:52:21 +00003159
3160Fixed miscellaneous documentation and man pages.
3161
3162Programmer's notes:
3163-------------------
3164
3165Cleaned up functions such as pass1_get_blocks, pass1_read_inode which
3166in e2fsck's pass1.c really should have been static.
3167
3168The return value of the uuid_compare() function was changed to make it
3169match with the convetions used by strcmp, memcmp, and Paul Leach's
3170UUID sample document.
3171
3172The "make depend" process has now been made more automated; it now
3173automatically word-wraps the dependencies, and only replaces source
3174Makefile.in if there has been a change in the dependencies. Also, a
3175top-level "make depend" now recurses through all the subdirectories
3176automatically.
3177
3178The Makefile in .../util has been changed so that subst is built using
3179the native C compiler during a cross-compilation, since the subst
3180program is only used during the build process. Also add an explicit
3181rule to build util/subst by cd'ing to the correct directory and
3182running Makefile.
3183
3184The man directories are defined in terms mandir, so that the configure
3185script can override the location of the manual pages.
3186
3187The config files have been updated to recognize new machine types for
3188both the i386 and alpha families.
3189
3190Fsck has been modified so that it will accurately create an
3191fsck_instance even when the noexecute flag is set. This allows for
3192accurate debugging of the fsck pass structure. Also, when the verbose
3193flag is given twice, fsck will print debugging information about when
3194fsck is waiting for jobs to finish.
3195
3196
Theodore Ts'o14790ed1999-01-12 23:32:52 +00003197E2fsprogs 1.14 (January 9, 1999)
3198================================
3199
3200Fix the fstab parsing code so that it can handle blank lines and
3201comment characters. Also, missing pass numbers need to be treated as
3202zero.
3203
3204Fixed a bug in e2fsck where under some circumstances (when e2fsck
3205needs to restart processing after fixing an egregious inconsistency)
3206it would try to access already freed memory.
3207
3208E2fsck now prints non-printable characters in directory entries and
3209pathnames using '^' and 'M-' notation.
3210
3211Fixed chattr so that it will ignore symbolic links when doing
3212recursive descent traversals. For both chattr and lsattr, no longer
3213print the version string unless the -V option is given.
3214
3215Allow the system administrator to directly specify the number of
3216inodes desired in the filesystem, for some special cases where this is
3217necessary.
3218
3219Fix portability problems so that e2fsprogs can be compiled under Linux
32201.2 systems and Solaris systems.
3221
3222Update the config.guess file with a more recent version that will
3223identify newer Linux platforms.
3224
3225Programmer's notes
3226------------------
3227
3228Ext2fs_read_inode and ext2fs_write_inode will now return an error if
3229an inode number of zero is passed to them.
3230
Theodore Ts'o556ad131998-12-19 08:10:58 +00003231E2fsprogs 1.13 (December 15, 1998)
3232==================================
3233
3234Fixed a bug in debugfs where an error messages weren't getting printed
3235when the ext2 library routines to read inodes returned errors in the
3236stat, cmri and rm commands.
3237
3238Fixed a bug in mke2fs so that if a ridiculous inode ratio parameter is
3239provided, it won't create an inode table smaller than the minimum
3240number of inodes required for a proper ext2 filesystem.
3241
3242Fsck now parses the /etc/fstab file directly (instead of using
3243getmntent()), so that it can distinguish between a missing pass number
3244field and pass number field of zero. This caused problems for
3245diskless workstations where all of the filesystems in /etc/fstab have
3246an explicit pass number of zero, and fsck could not distinguish this
3247from a /etc/fstab file with missing pass numbers.
3248
3249E2fsck will create a /lost+found directory if there isn't one in the
3250filesystem, since it's safer to create the lost+found directory before
3251it's needed.
3252
3253Fixed e2fsck so that it would detect bogus immutable inodes which
3254happen to be sockets and FIFO files, and offer to clear them.
3255
3256If a filesystem has multiple reasons why it needs to be checked, and
3257one of the reasons is that it is uncleanly mounted, e2fsck will print
3258that as the reason why the filesystem is being checked.
3259
3260Cleaned up the output routines of mke2fs so that it doesn't overflow
3261an 80 column display when formating really big filesystems.
3262
3263Added a sanity check to e2fsck to make sure that file descriptors 0,
32641, 2 are open before opening the hard disk. This avoids a problem
3265where a broken program might exec e2fsck with those file descriptors
3266closed, which would cause disastrous results if the kernel returns a
3267file descriptor for the block device which is also used by FILE *
3268stdout.
3269
3270Fixed up the e2fsck progress reporting functions so that the values
3271reliably reach 100% at the completion of all of the e2fsck passes.
3272
3273Fixed minor documentation bugs in man pages and usage messages.
3274
3275Programmer's notes:
3276-------------------
3277
3278Fixed a number of lint warnings in the ext2fs library and potential
3279portability problems from other OS's header files that might define
3280CPP macros for names like "max" and "min".
3281
3282ext2fs_badblocks_list_add() has been made more efficient when it needs
3283to grow the bad blocks list.
3284
3285Fixed a bug in e2fsck which caused it to dereference a freed pointer
3286just before exiting.
3287
3288Fixed the substition process for generating the mk_cmds and compile_et
3289scripts so that they will work outside of the build tree.
3290
3291Add sanity check to e2fsck so that if an internal routine
3292(ext2fs_get_dir_info) returns NULL, avoid dereferencing the pointer
3293and causing a core dump. This should never happen, but...
3294
Theodore Ts'oa5696711998-07-09 05:38:07 +00003295E2fsprogs 1.12 (July 9, 1998)
Theodore Ts'o21d53851998-02-21 03:14:50 +00003296==================================
3297
3298E2fsprogs now works with glibc (at least with the version shipped wtih
3299RedHat 5.0). The ext2fs_llseek() function should now work even with
3300i386 ELF shared libraries and if llseek() is not present. We also
3301explicitly do a configure test to see if (a) llseek is in libc, and
3302(b) if llseek is declared in the system header files. (See standard
3303complaints about libc developers don't understand the concept of
3304compatibility with previous versions of libc.)
3305
Theodore Ts'oc9833a61998-07-05 19:37:53 +00003306The ext2fs library now writes out the block group number in each of
3307the superblock copies. This makes it easier to automatically
3308determine the starting block group of the filesystem when the block
3309group information is trashed.
3310
3311Added support for the EXT2_FEATURE_INCOMPAT_FILETYPE feature,
Theodore Ts'o101c84f1998-03-24 16:27:11 +00003312which means that e2fsprogs will ignore the high 8 bits of the
3313directory entry's name_len field, so that it can be used for other
3314purposes.
3315
3316Added support for the EXT2_FEATURE_RO_COMPAT_LARGE_FILE feature.
3317E2fsprogs will now support filesystems with 64-bit sized files.
3318
3319Added support for the EXT2_FEATURE_COMPAT_DIR_PREALLOC feature.
3320
Theodore Ts'o21d53851998-02-21 03:14:50 +00003321Added new program "e2label", contributed by Andries Brouwer. E2label
3322provides an easy-to-use interface to modify the filesystem label.
3323
Theodore Ts'oa4b2d3c1998-04-03 16:12:25 +00003324Fixed bug so that lsattr -v works instead of producing a core dump.
3325
Theodore Ts'o21d53851998-02-21 03:14:50 +00003326Fixed a minor bug in mke2fs so that all groups with bad superblock
3327backup blocks are printed (not just the first one).
Theodore Ts'oa4b2d3c1998-04-03 16:12:25 +00003328
3329Mke2fs will check the size of the device, and if the user specifies a
3330filesystem size larger than the apparent size of the device it will
3331print a warning message and ask if the user wants to proceed.
3332
Theodore Ts'oc9833a61998-07-05 19:37:53 +00003333E2fsck has a new option -C, which sends completion information to the
3334specified file descriptor. For the most part, this is intended for
3335programs to use, although -C 0 will print a spinning character to the
3336stdout device, which may be useful for users who want to see something
3337happening while e2fsck goes about its business.
3338
Theodore Ts'o21d53851998-02-21 03:14:50 +00003339Fixed a bug in e2fsck which could cause a core dump when it needs to
3340expand the /lost+found directory, and sometimes the bitmaps haven't
3341been merged in. Also fixed a related bug where ext2fs_write_dir_block
3342was used to write out a non-directory block. (Which would be bad on a
3343non-Intel platform with byte swapping going on.)
3344
3345Fixed bug in e2fsck where it would print a "programming error" message
3346instead of correctly identifying where a bad block was in used when
3347the bad block was in a non-primary superblock or block group
3348descriptor. Also fixed a related bug when sparse superblocks are in
3349use and there is a bad block where a superblock or block group
3350descriptor would have been in a group that doesn't include a
3351superblock.
3352
3353Fixed a bug in e2fsck (really in libext2fs's dblist function) where if
3354the block group descriptor table is corrupt, it was possible to try to
3355allocate a huge array, fail, and then abort e2fsck.
3356ext2fs_get_num_dirs() now sanity checks the block group descriptor,
3357and subsitutes reasonable values if the descriptors are obviously bogus.
3358
3359If e2fsck finds a device file which has the immutable flag set and the
3360i_blocks beyond the normal device number are non-zero, e2fsck will
3361offer to remove it, since it's probably caused by garbage in the inode
3362table.
3363
3364When opening a filesystem, e2fsck specially checks for the EROFS error
3365code, and prints a specific error message to the user which is more
3366user friendly.
3367
3368If the filesystem revision is too high, change the e2fsck to print
3369that this is either because e2fsck is out of date, or because the
3370superblock is corrupt.
3371
3372E2fsck now checks for directories that have duplicate '.' and '..'
3373entries, and fixes this corruption.
3374
3375E2fsck no longer forces a sync of the filesystem (with attendant sleep
3376calls) at all times. The ext2fs_flush() function now performs a sync
3377only if it needed to write data blocks to disk.
3378
3379Fixed a minor bug in e2fsck's pass1b's file cloning function, where
3380certain errors would not be properly reported.
3381
3382Updated and expanded a few points in the man pages which users
3383complained wheren't explicit enough.
3384
3385Added special case byte-swapping code if compiling on the PowerPC, to
3386accomodate the strange big-endian variant of the ext2 filesystem that
3387was previously used on the PowerPC port.
3388
3389
3390Programmer's notes:
3391-------------------
3392
3393Removed C++ keywords from the ext2fs libraries so that it could be
3394compiled with C++.
3395
3396E2fsck's internal organization has now been massively reorganized so
3397that pass*.c don't have any printf statements. Instead, all problems
3398are reported through the fix_problem() abstraction interface. E2fsck
3399has also been revamped so that it can be called as a library from a
3400application.
3401
3402Added new fileio primitives in libext2fs for reading and writing
3403files on an unmounted ext2 filesystem. This interface is now used by
3404debugfs.
3405
3406Added a new libext2fs function for mapping logical block numbers of
3407a file to a physical block number.
3408
3409Added a new libext2fs function, ext2fs_alloc_block(), which allocates
3410a block, zeros it, and updates the filesystem accounting records
3411appropriately.
3412
3413Added a new libext2fs function, ext2fs_set_bitmap_padding(), which
3414sets the padding of the bitmap to be all one's. Used by e2fsck pass 5.
3415
3416The libext2fs functions now use a set of memory allocation wrapper
3417functions: ext2fs_get_mem, ext2fs_free_mem, and ext2fs_resize_mem,
3418instead of malloc, free, and resize. This makes it easier for us to
3419be ported to strange environments where malloc, et. al. aren't
3420necessarily available.
3421
3422Change the libext2fs fucntion to return ext2-specific error codes
3423(EXT2_DIR_EXISTS and EXT2_DB_NOT_FOUND, for example) instead of using
3424and depending on the existence of system error codes (such as EEXIST
3425and ENOENT).
3426
3427Renamed io.h to ext2_io.h to avoid collision with other OS's header
3428files.
3429
3430Add protection against ext2_io.h and ext2fs.h being included multiple
3431times.
3432
3433The types used for memory lengths, etc. have been made more portable.
3434In generla, the code has been made 16-bit safe. Added Mark
3435Habersack's contributed DOS disk i/o routines.
3436
3437Miscellaneous portability fixes, including not depending on char's
3438being signed.
3439
3440The io_channel structure has a new element, app_data, which is
3441initialized by the ext2fs routines to contain a copy of the filesystem
3442handle.
3443
3444ext2fs_check_directory()'s callback function may now return the error
3445EXT2_ET_CALLBACK_NOTHANDLED if it wishes ext2fs_check_directory() to
3446really do the checking, despite the presence of the callback function.
3447
3448
Theodore Ts'obc210071997-06-17 05:41:36 +00003449E2fsprosg 1.11 (June 17, 1997)
3450==============================
3451
3452Fixed e2fsck to detect (previously ignored) conflicts between the
3453superblock or block group descriptors and block bitmaps, inode
3454bitmaps, and inode tables.
3455
3456Fixed bug in e2fsck so that when the message printed out when a block
3457or inode bitmap conflicts with other data, it has the correct group
3458number.
3459
3460Fixed bug in e2fsck and mke2fs where the blocksize wasn't being passed
3461to badblocks. This meant that not all of the filesystem was being
3462tested for bad blocks!
3463
3464Fixed an array boundary overrun case which cropped up in
3465ext2fs_badblocks_list_test when a user tried running "mke2fs -c
3466-b 4096".
3467
3468Adjusted the number of columns printed by mke2fs when displaying the
3469superblock backups to avoid running over 80 columns when making a
Theodore Ts'o21d53851998-02-21 03:14:50 +00003470really big filesystem.
Theodore Ts'obc210071997-06-17 05:41:36 +00003471
3472Fixed up the man pages for e2fsck, debugfs, badblocks, chattr,
3473dumpe2fs, fsck, mke2fs, and tune2fs (typos and other minor grammar
3474fixes), thanks to some suggestions from Bill Hawes (whawes@star.net).
3475
3476Programmer's notes:
3477-------------------
3478
3479Fixed install rule in lib/ss so that ss_err.h is actually getting
3480installed.
3481
3482Fixed bug in ext2fs_copy_bitmap; the destination bitmap wasn't getting
3483bassed back to the caller.
3484
3485Fixed bug in ext2fs_inode_scan_goto_blockgroup; it had not been
3486setting the current inode number (which meant this function wasn't
3487working at all).
3488
3489Fixed bug in ext2fs_resize_generic_bitmap; it had not be zeroing all
3490blocks in the bitmap when increasing the size of the bitmap.
3491
3492Changed the initial number of blocks allocated by ext2fs_init_dblist()
3493to be more realistic.
3494
3495Added a new function ext2fs_allocate_group_table, which sets up the
3496group descriptor information (and allocates inode and block bitmaps,
3497and inode tables for a particular group). The function was created by
3498factoring out code form ext2fs_allocate_tables().
3499
3500Added a new function ext2fs_move_blocks which takes a bitmap of the
3501blocks to be moved, and moves them to another location on the
3502boardboard.
3503
3504Make the unix_io channel's io_channel_flush implementation calls sync()
3505to to flush the kernel buffers to disk.
3506
3507Added a new function ext2fs_dblist_count returns the number of
3508directory blocks in dblist.
3509
3510
Theodore Ts'oae851481997-04-29 18:13:24 +00003511E2fsprogs 1.10 (April 24, 1997)
3512===============================
3513
3514Mke2fs once again defaults to creating revision #0 filesystems, since
3515people were complaining about breaking compatibility with 1.2 kernels.
3516Warning messages were added to the mke2fs and tune2fs man pages that
3517the sparse superblock option isn't supported by most kernels yet (1.2
3518and 2.0 both don't support parse superblocks.)
3519
3520Added new flag to mke2fs, -R <raid options>, which allows the user to
3521tell mke2fs about the RAID configuration of the filesystem. Currently
3522the only supported raid option is "stride" which specifies the width
3523of the RAID stripe.
3524
3525Fixed bug in e2fsck where pass1b would bomb out if there were any
3526blocks marked bad in the inode table.
3527
3528Fixed rare bug in mke2fs where if the user had a very unlucky number
3529of blocks in a filesystem (probability less than .002) the resulting
3530filesystem would be corrupt in the last block group.
3531
3532Fixed bug where if e2fsck tried to allocate a block to fix a
3533filesystem corruption problem and the filesystem had no free blocks,
3534ext2fs_new_block() would loop forever.
3535
3536The configure script now checks explicitly to see if "-static" works,
3537since that can't be assumed to be true --- RedHat doesn't install
3538libc-static by default.
3539
3540Fixed bug in libext2's block iterator functions where under some
3541cirmcustances, file with holes would cause the bcount parameter to the
3542callback function to be incorrect. This bug didn't affect any of
3543e2fsprogs programs, but it was discovered by Paul Mackerras, the
3544author of the PPC boot loader.
3545
3546Removed use of static variables to store the inode cache in libext2fs.
3547This caused problems if more than one filesystem was accessed via
3548libext2fs (static variables in libraries are generally a bad idea).
3549Again, this didn't affect e2fsprogs programs, but it was discovered by
3550Paul Mackerras.
3551
3552Fixed minor bugs and version code drift to assure that e2fsprogs 1.10
3553will compile cleanly with 1.2.13 kernels (even with a.out shared
3554libraries!)
3555
3556Programmer's notes:
3557-------------------
3558
3559Added new functions to duplicate an ext2 filesystem handle, and its
3560associated substructure. New functions: ext2fs_dup_handle(),
3561ext2fs_copy_dblist(), ext2fs_badblocks_copy(), ext2fs_copy_bitmap().
3562Other structures, such as the io_channel and the inode_cache, now have
3563a ref count so that they only get freed when they are no longer used
3564by any filesystem handle. (These functions were added as part of the
3565development effort for an ext2 resizer).
3566
Theodore Ts'o2ecc6fe1997-04-29 17:57:00 +00003567E2fsprogs 1.09 (April 14, 1997)
3568===============================
3569
3570Fixed bug in mke2fs (really in lib/ext2fs/initialize.c) which was
3571accidentally introduced in the 1.08 release. The overhead calculation
3572was accidentally removed, which caused ext2fs_initialize() to not
3573notice when the filesystem size needed to be adjusted down because
3574there wasn't enough space in the last block group.
3575
3576Fixed bug in version parsing library routine; it was always parsing
3577the library version string, instead of using the passed-in string.
3578
3579Clarified chattr man page.
3580
Theodore Ts'o24757fa1997-04-29 17:39:27 +00003581E2fsprogs 1.08 (April 10, 1997)
3582===============================
3583
3584E2fsck 1.07 was very slow when checking very large filesystems with a
3585lot of files that had hard links (i.e., news spools). This was fixed
3586by seriously revamping the icount abstraction. Added a formal test
3587suite for the icount abstraction.
3588
3589Debugfs now has a "-l" option to the "ls" command, which lists the
3590inode number, permissions, owner, group, size, and name of the files
3591in the directory.
3592
3593Fix a bug in e2fsck where when a directory had its blocks moved to
3594another location during the pass 1b processing, the directory block
3595list wasn't updated, so pass 2 wouldn't check (and correct) the
3596correct directory block.
3597
3598E2fsck will now treat inodes which contain blocks which are claimed by
3599the filesystem metadata by treating them as multiply claimed blocks.
3600This way, the data in those blocks can be copied to a new block during
3601the pass 1b--1d processing.
3602
3603E2fsck will attempt to determine the correct superblock number and
3604display it in the diagnostic and warning messages if possible.
3605
3606Add support for a new (incompatible) feature, "sparse_super". This
3607feature reduces the number of blocks which contain copies of backup
3608superblocks and block group descriptors. (It is only an incompatible
3609feature because of a bug in ext2_free_blocks.) mke2fs and tune2fs now
3610support a new -s option; e2fsck will recognize filesystems built with
3611this feature turned on.
3612
3613E2fsck now checks the library to make sure is the correct version,
3614using new library functions. (This helps to diagnose incorrectly
3615installed e2fsprogs distributions.)
3616
3617Dumpe2fs now prints more information; its now prints the the
3618filesystem revision number, the filesystem sparse_super feature (if
3619present), the block ranges for each block group, and the offset from
3620the beginning of the block group.
3621
3622Mke2fs now distributes the inode and block bitmap blok so that the
3623won't be concentrated in one or two disks in RAID/striping setups.
3624Also, if the user chooses a 2k or 4k block group, mke2fs will try to
3625choose the largest blocks per group that be chosen. (For 2k blocks,
3626you can have up to 16384 blocks/group; for 4k blocks, you can have up
3627to 32768 blocks/group.) Previously mke2fs would not allow
3628specification of more than 8192 blocks per group, even if you were
3629using a 2k or 4k block group.
3630
3631Programmer's notes:
3632-------------------
3633
3634Added a new function ext2fs_create_icount2() which takes a "hint"
3635argument. This hint argument presets the icount array with the list
3636of inodes which actually need to be in the icount array. This really
3637helps to speed up e2fsck.
3638
3639Added a new function ext2fs_icount_validate() which checks the rep
3640invariant for the icount structure. This is used mostly for testing.
3641
3642The error mesasage given when a bad inode number is passed to
3643test_generic_bitmap to reflect EXT2FS_TEST_ERROR (instead of
3644EXT2FS_UNMARK_ERROR).
3645
3646Added a new function ext2fs_set_dir_block which sets the block of a
3647dblist entry, given the directory inode and blockcnt.
3648
3649Added a new function ext2fs_get_library_version() which returns the
3650current library version, and ext2fs_parse_version_string() which
3651returns a version number based on a e2fsprogs version string.
3652
3653The icount functions will return EINVAL if the passed in inode number
3654is out of bounds.
3655
Theodore Ts'o21c84b71997-04-29 16:15:03 +00003656E2fsprogs 1.07 (March 9, 1997)
3657==============================
3658
3659E2fsck is now uses much less memory when checking really large
3660filesystems (or rather, filesystems with a large number of inodes).
3661Previously a filesystem with 1 million inodes required 4 megabytes of
3662memory to store inode count statistics; that storage requirement has
3663now been reduced to roughly half a megabyte.
3664
3665E2fsck can now properly deal with bad blocks appearing inside the
3666inode table. Instead of trying to relocate the inode table (which
3667often failed because there wasn't enough space), the inodes in the bad
3668block are marked as in use.
3669
3670E2fsck will automatically try to use the backup superblocks if the
3671primary superblocks have a bad magic number or have missing meta-data
3672blocks (or meta-data blocks which are out of range).
3673
3674E2fsck's pass 3 has been made more efficient; most noticeable on
3675filesystems with a very large number of directories.
3676
3677Completely revamped e2fsck's system of printing problem reports. It
3678is now table driven, to make them more easily customizeable and
3679extendable. Error messages which can be printed out during preen mode
3680are now one line long.
3681
3682Fixed e2fsck's filesystem swapping code so that it won't try to swap
3683fast symbolic links or deleted files.
3684
3685Fixed e2fsck core dumping when fixing a filesystem which has no
3686directories (not even a root directory).
3687
3688Added a check to e2fsck to make sure that the length of every
3689directory entry is a multiple of 4 (since the kernel complains if it
3690isn't).
3691
3692Added a check to e2fsck to make sure that a directory entry isn't a
3693link to the root directory, since that isn't allowed.
3694
3695Added a check to e2fsk to now make sure the '.' and '..' directory
3696entries are null terminated, since the 2.0 kernel requires it.
3697
3698Added check to write_bitmaps() to make sure the superblock doesn't get
3699trashed if the inode or block bitmap is marked as being block zero.
3700
3701Added checking of the new feature set fields in the superblock, to
3702avoid dealing with new filesystem features that this package wasn't
3703set up to handle.
3704
3705Fixed a fencepost error in ext2fs_new_block() which would occasionally
3706try to allocate a block beyond the end of a filesystem.
3707
3708When the UUID library picks a random IEEE 802 address (because it
3709can't find one from a network card), it sets the multicast bit, to
3710avoid conflicting with a legitimate IEEE 802 address.
3711
3712Mke2fs now sets the root directory's owner to be the real uid of the
3713user running mke2fs. If the real uid is non-zero, it also sets
3714the group ownership of the root directory to be the real group-id of
3715the user running mke2fs.
3716
3717Mke2fs now has more intelligent error checking when it is given a
3718non-existent device.
3719
3720When badblocks is given the -vv option, it now updates the block that
3721it is currently testing on every block.
3722
3723Fixed a bug in fsck where it wouldn't modify the PATH envirnoment
3724currently correctly if PATH wasn't already set.
3725
3726Shared libraries now built with dependencies. This allows the shared
3727library files to be used with dlopen(); it also makes the transition
3728to libc 6 easier, since ld.so can tell which libc a particular shared
3729library expects to use.
3730
3731Programmer's notes:
3732-------------------
3733
3734Added new abstraction (defined in dblist.c) for maintaining a list of
3735blocks which belongs to directories. This is used in e2fsck and other
3736programs which need to iterate over all directories.
3737
3738Added new functions which test to see if a contiguous range of blocks
3739(or inodes) are available. (ext2fs_*_bitmap_range).
3740
3741Added new function (ext2_inode_has_valid_blocks) which returns true if
3742an inode has valid blocks. (moved from e2fsck code).
3743
3744Added new function (ext2fs_allocate_tables) which allocates the
3745meta-data blocks as part of initializing a filesystem. (moved from
3746mke2fs code).
3747
3748Added a new I/O manager for testing purposes. It will either allow a
3749program to intercept I/O requests, or print debugging messages to
3750trace the activity of a program using the I/O manager.
3751
3752The badblocks_list functions now store the bad blocks in a sorted
3753order, and use a binary search to speed up badblocks_list_test.
3754
3755The inode scan function ext2fs_get_next_inode() may now return a soft
3756error returns: MISSING_INODE_TABLE and BAD_BLOCK_IN_INODE_TABLE in
3757those cases where part of an inode table is missing or there is a bad
3758block in the inode table.
3759
3760Added a new function (ext2fs_block_iterate2) which adds new arguments to
3761the callback function to return a pointer (block and offset) to the
3762reference of the block.
3763
3764Added new function (ext2fs_inode_scan_goto_blockgroup) which allows an
3765application to jump to a particular block group while doing an inode
3766scan.
3767
3768The badblocks list functions were renamed from badblocks_* to
3769ext2fs_badblocks_*. Backwards compatibility functions are available
3770for now, but programs should be modified to use the new interface.
3771
3772Some of the library functions were reorganized into separate files to
3773reduce the size of some programs which statically link against the
3774ext2 library.
3775
3776Put in some miscellaneous fixes for the Alpha platform.

3779E2fsprogs 1.06 (October 7, 1996)
3780================================
3781
3782Fixed serious bug in e2fsck: if the block descriptors are bad, don't
3783smash the backup copies in ext2fs_close(). (The problem was that when
3784e2fsck -p discovered the problem, while it was closing the filesystem
3785and exiting, it was also blowing away the backup superblocks on the
3786disk, which was less than friendly.) We now make it the case that we
3787only write out the backup superblock and the back block descriptors if
3788the filesystem is completely free from problems.
3789
3790Fixed a bug in block_interate in the lib/ext2fs library which caused
3791e2fsck to fail on GNU Hurd-created filesystems.
3792
3793Add support for Linux/FT's bootloader, which actually uses
3794EXT2_BOOT_LOADER, and sets its mode bits which caused e2fsck to want
3795to clear the inode.
3796
3797Add support for the "A" (no atime update) attribute. (Note: this
3798attribute is not yet in production kernels.)
3799
3800The test suite is not automatically run when doing a "make all" from
3801the top level directory. Users should manually run "make check" if
3802they wish to run the test suite.
3803
3804Upon a preenhalt(), make the printed message more explicit that
3805running e2fsck "MANAULLY" means without the -p or -a options.
3806
3807In e2fsck, if a disconnected inode is zero-length, offer to clear it
3808instead of offering to connect it to lost+found.
3809
3810In e2fsck, if a filesystem was just unmounted uncleanly, and needs
3811e2fsck to be run over it, change e2fsck to explicitly display this
3812fact.
3813
3814For dumpe2fs and e2fsck, cause the -V option to print out which
3815version of the ext2fs library is actually getting used. (This will
3816help detect mismatches of using a 1.06 utility with a 1.05 library,
3817etc.)
3818
3819Programmers' notes:
3820-------------------
3821
3822EXT2_SWAP_BYTES was changed to EXT2_FLAG_SWAP_BYTES, which better fits
3823the naming convention.
3824
3825In ext2fs_initialize(), make sure the description for the inode bitmap
3826is correctly initialize.
3827
3828Fixed minor type typo in ext2fs_allocate_generic_bitmap();
3829
Theodore Ts'ofc6d9d51997-04-29 14:51:31 +00003830E2fsprogs 1.05 (September 7, 1996)
3831==================================
3832
3833Add support for new fields in the ext2 superblock --- volume name,
3834volume UUID, and last mounted field. Dumpe2fs displays these fields,
3835tune2fs and mke2fs allows you to set them. E2fsck will automatically
3836generate a UUID for those volumes that don't have them.
3837
3838Put in support for e2fsck to recognize HURD specific ext2 features ---
3839most notably, the translator block. The e2fsprogs tools will now use
3840the creator_os field in the superblock to correctly handle different
3841OS-specific variants of the ext2 filesystem.
3842
3843E2fsck now fixes inodes which have a the deletion time set, but which
3844have a non-zero i_link_count field by offering to clear the deletion
3845time. Previously e2fsck assumed that the inode was deleted (per 0.3c
3846ext2 kernel behavior) and offered to unlink the file.
3847
3848If e2fsck sets the clean bit, but nothing else, set the exit code
3849FSCK_NONDESTRUCT. After all, e2fsck did fix a filesystem error --- it
3850set the filesystem valid bit when it was previously cleared. :-) This
3851was needed to make the HURD fsck driver happy.
3852
3853If the user refuses to attach an unattached inode, e2fsck will no
3854longer set the inode's link count. Otherwise, the inode would end up
3855getting marked as unused, which might cause loss of data later.
3856
3857Make the message issued by e2fsck when the superblock is corrupt less
3858confusing for users. It now mentions that another reason for the
3859"corrupt superblock" message might be that the partition might not be
3860an ext2 filesystem at all (it might swap, msdos filesystem, ufs, etc.)
3861
3862Make the libext2 library more robuest so that e2fsck won't coredump on
3863an illegal superblock where the blocksize is zero. (f_crashdisk is
3864the test case).
3865
3866By default, create filesystems where the default checkinterval is 6
3867months (180 days). Linux servers can be robust enough that 20 reboots
3868can be a long, long time.
3869
3870Added configure flag --enable-old-bitops, which forces the bitops to
3871use the old (native) bitmask operations. By default on the sparc
3872platform, the standard ext2 bit ordering is now used.
3873
3874Added a new feature to e2fsck to byte-swap filesystems; this can be
3875used to convert old m68k filesystems to use the standard byte-order
3876storage for the superblock, inodes, and directory blocks. This
3877function is invoked by using the '-s' option to e2fsck.
3878
3879Debugfs's "dump" command has been enhanced so that it writes out the
3880exact size of the file so that the nulls at the end of the file are
3881eliminated. The command also accept a new "-p" option which will
3882attempt preserve to preserve the ownernship, permissions, and
3883file modification/access times.
3884
3885Debugfs has two new options, -f and -R. The -R option allows the user
3886to execute a single debugfs command from the command line. The -f
3887option allows the user to specify a "command file" containing debugfs
3888commands which will get executed.
3889
3890Dumpe2fs now pretty prints the check interval, instead of just
3891printing the check interval as a number of seconds.
3892
3893Fix bugs in debugfs: the params command when no filesystem is opened
3894no longer causes a core dump. It is now possible to unlink a file
3895when a pathame containing a '/' is specified.
3896
3897Tune2fs has a new -C option which sets the number of times the
3898filesystem has been mounted.
3899
3900Fix the chattr '-v' option so that it actually works. Chattr was
3901being buggy about the -v option parsing.
3902
3903Programmers' notes:
3904-------------------
3905
3906The directory lib/uuid contains a set of library routines to generate
3907DCE compatible UUIDs.
3908
3909Extended ext2fs_namei() to handle symbolic links. Added new function
3910ext2fs_nami_follow() which will follow last symbolic link in the case
3911where the pathname points to a sym link.
3912
3913The ext2fs_block_iterate function will now return the HURD translator
3914block, if present. The new flag BLOCK_FLAG_DATA_ONLY will cause the
3915iterator to return data blocks only. The ext2fs.h file now defines
3916constants BLOCK_COUNT_IND, BLOCK_COUNT_DIND, BLOCK_COUNT_TIND, and
3917BLOCK_COUNT_TRANSLATOR, which are the magic values passed in the block
3918count field of the iterator callback function.
3919
3920The test script driver now takes an optional second argument, which is
3921the test case to be run. This allows you to run a test case without
3922needing to run the entire test suite.
3923
3924On Linux ELF systems, install the .so files in the correct places
3925(/usr/lib). The .so files must be stored in the same directory as the
3926.a files.
3927
3928Fixed miscellaneous HURD compilation issues with header file being
3929included in the right order.
3930
3931Fixed debugfs so that it resets optind to zero, not one, since setting
3932optind to zero is more correct.
3933
3934
Theodore Ts'oa4d09611997-04-29 14:28:00 +00003935E2fsprogs 1.04 (May 16, 1996)
3936=============================
3937
3938First "official" (1.03 was a limited release only) to support building
3939e2fsprogs under Linux 2.0 kernels (as well as late model 1.3 and 1.99
3940kernels).
3941
3942This package includes a RPM specs file, that it can be built using the
3943RedHat Package Manager.
3944
3945E2fsck now prints a hint that if there are lots of incorrectly located
3946inode bitmaps, block bitmaps, and inode table blocks, the user might
3947want to try using e2fsck -b 8193 first, to see if that fares any
3948better.
3949
3950For ext2 filesystem written with the hurd, debugfs will now print out
3951the translator field when printing an inode structure.
3952
3953Lots of miscellaneous linking/installation cleanups:
3954
3955 Libraries are now linked using a relative pathname, instead of
3956 relying on -L working correct. It doesn't, in many cases, including
3957 current versions of GNU ld. This guarantees that the build tree is
3958 linking with the right libraries, instead of the ones installed in
3959 /usr/lib.
3960
3961 Header files, man pages, and the et/ss shell scripts are now
3962 generated using a custom substitution script, instead of relying on
3963 the configure script. This prevents needless recompilation of
3964 files; in addition, the custom substitution script is much faster.
3965
3966 e2fsck may now be linked dynamically, by using the
3967 --enable-dynamic-e2fsck flag to configure. This is not recommended,
3968 since it increases e2fsck's dependence on other files, but some
3969 people need to save disk space, and other critical programs on their
3970 systems were being linked dynamically anyway.
3971
3972 Programs such as fsck which didn't need to be linked against
3973 libext2fs (or mke2fs which didn't need to be linked against libe2p)
3974 only link against libraries they actually need. Otherwise, those
3975 programs would require the presense of libraries that otherwise
3976 could be removed from a rescuse diskette.
3977
3978 The ss include files are now installed correctly so they can
3979 actually be used by another package.
3980
3981 If the profiling libraries are built, they are now installed on a
3982 "make install-libs".
3983
3984
Theodore Ts'o7f88b041997-04-26 14:48:50 +00003985E2fsprogs 1.03 (March 27, 1996)
3986===============================
3987
3988Change the m68k bit numbering for bitmasks to match the bit numbering
3989used by all other ext2 implementations. (This change was requested by
3990the m68k kernel development team.)
3991
3992Support (in-development) filesystem format revision which supports
3993(among other things) dynamically sized inodes.
3994
3995Fixed a bug in the ext2 library so that an intelligent error is
3996returned if mke2fs is run with a ridiculously small number of blocks
3997for a partition.
3998
3999Fixed a bug in the ext2 library which required that the device be
4000openable in read/write mode in order to determine its size. This
4001caused e2fsck -n to require read/write access when it was not
4002previously necessary.
4003
4004Fixed a bug in e2fsck which casued it to occasionally fail the test
4005suite depending on which version of the floating point library it was
4006using.
4007
4008Fixed a bug in e2fsck so that it now halts with a fatal error when
4009certain superblock consistency checks fail. Previously it continued
4010running e2fsck, with some potential confusing/damaging consequences.
4011
4012Added new flag to fsck which allows the root to be checked in parallel
4013with other filesytems. This is not the safest thing in the world to
4014do, but some system administrators really wanted it.
4015
Theodore Ts'ofc6d9d51997-04-29 14:51:31 +00004016Fixed -Wall flames in lib/ss.

4019E2fsprogs 1.02 (January 16, 1996)
4020=================================
4021
4022Fix to allow e2fsprogs to be compiled on recent 1.3 (pl45+) kernels.
4023
4024Change e2fsck to print statistics of how many non-contiguous files are
4025on the system. Note that a file which is larger than 8k blocks, it is
4026guaranteed to be non-contiguous.
4027
4028In mke2fs, print a warning message if a user tries to format a whole
4029disk (/dev/hda versus /dev/hda1). If a user really wants to format a
4030whole disk, the -F (force) option forces mke2fs to format a whole disk
4031as a filesytem.
4032
4033Fix a bug in fsck where in some cases it might start checking
4034partitions in the next pass before it finishes checking partitions in
4035the current pass. This still won't cause two partitions on the same
4036disk will be checked, so it's rarely a problem in real life.
4037
4038Patch lsattr so that it won't hang when checking a named pipe.
4039
4040Minor compilation fixes:
4041 * Fix the order of libraries that were linked in debugfs.
4042 * Allow the sources to be compiled with -ansi turned on.
