Brendan Greggee74c372016-02-15 22:22:19 -08001Demonstrations of btrfsslower, the Linux eBPF/bcc version.
2
3
4btrfsslower shows btrfs reads, writes, opens, and fsyncs, slower than a
5threshold. For example:
6
7# ./btrfsslower

17
18This shows several reads from a "randread.pl" program, each 8 Kbytes in size,
19and from a "data1" file. These all had over 10 ms latency.
20
21This "latency" is measured from when the operation was issued from the VFS
22interface to the file system, to when it completed. This spans everything:
23block device I/O (disk I/O), file system CPU cycles, file system locks, run
24queue latency, etc. This is a better measure of the latency suffered by
25applications reading from the file system than measuring this down at the
26block device interface.
27
28Note that this only traces the common file system operations previously
29listed: other file system operations (eg, inode operations including
30getattr()) are not traced.
31
32
33The threshold can be provided as an argument. Eg, I/O slower than 1 ms:
34
35# ./btrfsslower 1

69
70There's now much more output (this spans less than 3 seconds, the previous output
71spanned 6 seconds), as the lower threshold is catching more I/O.
72
73
74A threshold of 0 will trace all operations. Warning: the output will be
75verbose, as it will include all file system cache hits.
76
77# ./btrfsslower 0

8403:28:23 cksum 32743 R 0 0 0.00 date.txt
85
86While tracing, the following commands were run in another window:
87
88# date > date.txt
89# cksum date.txt
90
91The output of btrfsslower now includes open operations ("O"), and writes ("W").
92The first read from cksum(1) returned 29 bytes, and the second returned 0:
93causing cksum(1) to stop reading.
94
95
96A -j option will print just the fields (parsable output, csv):
97
98# ./btrfsslower -j 1

121This may be useful for visualizing with another tool, for example, for
122producing a scatter plot of ENDTIME vs LATENCY, to look for time-based
123patterns.
