Theodore Ts'o118d7da2002-08-17 23:01:22 -04003 * findfs.8.in: New man page.
4
5 * tune2fs.c (do_findfs): If tune2fs is executed with argv[0] set
6 to findfs, then it will interpret argv[1] as one of
7 LABEL=xxx or UUID=xxx and translate it to a device name.
8
9 * get_device_by_label.c (uuidcache_init): Moved code which
10 interpreted /proc/partitions into read_partitions(), and
11 then added support for interpreting /proc/evms/volumes in
12 read_evms(). uuidcache_init() calls both read_evms() and
13 read_partitions().
14
Theodore Ts'o1f22ce32002-08-17 18:16:29 -040015 * mke2fs.8.in: Add a common usage of the -n option. (Addresses
16 Debian Bug #146437)
17
Theodore Ts'oa1411352002-08-17 17:39:39 -040018 * fsck.c (main): If no filesystems are specified on the command
19 line, default to -As. (Addresses Debian Bug #153102)
20
21 * badblocks.8.in: Clarify why it's bad to do a non-destructive
22 test on a r/o mounted filesystem. (Addresses Debian Bug
23 #131350)
24
Theodore Ts'o023d1112002-08-17 14:44:56 -040025 * chattr.1.in: Document the compression attribute flags E, X, and
26 Z, and explain that chattr can't set or set these flags.
27 (Addresses Debian Bug #151990)
28
Theodore Ts'of044b4d2002-08-17 13:32:21 -040029 * fsck.8.in: Fix typo in man page, and clarified text regarding
30 options specifiers for -t option. (Addresses Debian bug
31 #145044)
32
33 * mke2fs.c (main): If there is a problem zeroing blocks at the end
34 of the filesystem, don't abort mke2fs. Addresses Debian
35 bug #155007.
36
Theodore Ts'oed909bb2002-08-16 17:03:59 -0400372002-08-16 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@mit.edu>
38
39 * e2image.c (write_raw_image_file): Check for an extended
40 attribute block before checking for has_valid_blocks.
41
Theodore Ts'o4cae0452002-07-21 14:14:03 -0400422002-07-21 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@mit.edu>
43
44 * fsck.8.in: Document new fsck exit code, FSCK_CANCELED.
45
46 * fsck.c: Trap SIGINT and SIGTERM, and relay it to all of the
47 child fsck processes.
48
Theodore Ts'o70988102002-07-14 08:00:00 -0400492002-07-14 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@mit.edu>
50
51 * mke2fs.c (zap_sector): Clear the buffer *after* testing for the
52 BSD sector label. Otherwise the first 512 bytes don't get
53 zapped. (Addresses Debian bug #147256.)
54
Theodore Ts'of0865ce2002-07-02 10:08:27 -0400552002-07-02 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@mit.edu>
56
57 * mke2fs.8.in: Cleaned up man page, and made it a bit more
58 OS-agnostic. Addresses Debian bug #144621. Hope this
59 makes the Hurd whiners happy. :-)
60
Theodore Ts'o5cfd7402002-06-28 10:47:24 -0400612002-06-28 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@mit.edu>
62
63 * chattr.1.in: Fix man page typo. (Addresses Debian bug #141938)
64
Theodore Ts'o88372d52002-06-15 18:58:39 -0400652002-06-15 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@mit.edu>
66
67 * chattr.c: Applied patch from Andrew to support the dirsync flag.
68
Andreas Dilgerb21bf262002-06-10 11:05:56 -0600692002-05-22 Andreas Dilger <adilger@clusterfs.com>
70
71 * mke2fs.c (set_fs_defaults): make the default inode ratio at most
72 one inode per block for large blocksizes.
73
Theodore Ts'o31e29a12002-05-17 10:53:07 -0400742002-05-17 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@mit.edu>
75
76 * mke2fs.c (PRS): Determine the page size using sysconf() at
77 runtime, instead of using the Linux system header files.
78
792002-05-16 Andreas Dilger <adilger@clusterfs.com>
80
81 * mke2fs.c (PRS): Allow blocksizes larger than 4k to be specified,
82 with warning printed and the user questioned if blocksize
83 is larger than the system's page size according to the
84 Linux kernel header files. Added better checking for
85 valid inode sizes, and again print a warning message if
86 using a large inode size (since most kernels today don't
87 support this yet).

Theodore Ts'o7d4343d2002-02-12 02:34:44 -0500137
138 * get_device_by_label.c: Since on non-STDC compilers, we define
139 away const, include get_device_by_label.h after we include
140 fsck.h.
141
142 * Makefile.in (base_device): Remove use of $<, which is
143 non-portable.
144

162 envrionment variable.
163
164 * fsck.8.in: Document all of the environment variables used by fsck.
165
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05001662002-01-27 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>
Theodore Ts'o177ab2b2002-01-27 18:23:49 -0500167
168 * tune2fs.8.in: Document the -f flag to tune2fs.
169
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05001702002-01-02 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>
Theodore Ts'o5493a272002-01-02 14:15:35 -0500171
172 * badblocks.c (main): Open the device as O_RDWR if possible, since
173 fsync() isn't guaranteed to work if the filesystem is
174 opened read-only.
175
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05001762001-12-26 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>
Theodore Ts'od4de4aa2001-12-26 08:58:01 -0500177
178 * tune2fs.8.in, tune2fs.c (parse_tune2fs_options, main): Add
179 support for new option, -T, which allows the user to set
180 the last checked time on the filesystem.
181
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05001822001-12-24 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>
Theodore Ts'o6a525062001-12-24 09:40:00 -0500183
Theodore Ts'o3ed57c22001-12-24 15:01:59 -0500184 * mke2fs.c (main, test_disk): If two -c options are
185 specified, then perform a destructive read/write test
186 of the disk.
187
188 * mke2fs.8.in: Document the double -c option; also encourage users
189 to use -c instead of the -l/-L options since it's too hard
190 for users to get things like the blocksize parameter correct.
191
192 * badblocks.8.in: Encourage users to use the -c option in mke2fs
193 and e2fsck instead of running badblocks directly.
194
Theodore Ts'o6a525062001-12-24 09:40:00 -0500195 * mke2fs.c (create_lost_and_found): The lost+found directory is
196 now created with 0700 permissions, since files which get
197 dropped into that directory may have come from a protected
198 directory, and the system administrator may not deal with
199 immediately. (Addresses Debian bug #118443)
200
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05002012001-12-23 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>
Theodore Ts'o19007e52001-12-23 19:33:51 -0500202
203 * Makefile.in, jfs_user.h: Move linux/jbd.h to
204 ext2fs/kernel-jbd.h, to avoid using the system header
205 file version of hbd.h when using diet glibc (since it
206 forcibly adds /usr/include to the beginning of the
207 include search path.)
208
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05002092001-12-22 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>
Theodore Ts'oeaf4dc52001-12-22 00:04:22 -0500210
211 * get_device_by_label.c (init_lvm): Add support to read out
212 information from the LVM proc hierarchy, so that the UUID
213 cache can search the LVM logical volumes for UUID's,
214 labels, etc.
215
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05002162001-12-21 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>
Theodore Ts'o0655b102001-12-21 23:59:46 -0500217
218 * dumpe2fs.c (list_bad_blocks): Change to not die if the listing
219 of the bad blocks can't be found. Slimmed down dumpe2fs
220 by eliminating duplicate code paths.
221

225 get_device_by_label.c (get_label_uuid),
226 mke2fs.c (set_fs_defaults, zap_sector, PRS),
227 tune2fs.c (remove_journal_device, update_feature_set),
228 util.c (figure_journal_size), util.h: Fix gcc -Wall nits.
229
230 * e2image.c (write_raw_image_file): Fix gcc -Wall nits, and use
231 the stashed inode functions to optimize away system calls.
232
Theodore Ts'o8cf93332001-12-16 02:23:36 -0500233 * Makefile.in, jfs_user.h: linux/jfs.h has been renamed to
234 linux/jbd.h
235
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05002362001-12-02 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>
Theodore Ts'oa5f0bb92001-12-02 19:29:35 +0100237
238 * dumpe2fs.c: Don't print the offset to the bitmap and inode table
239 if it's negative. Also did some generalized code clean up
240 to slim it down the support of the -x option.
241
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05002422001-11-24 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>

249 * util.c (check_plausibility): Use stat64 if available so that
250 check_plausibility() works with files > 2GB.
251
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05002522001-11-05 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>

Theodore Ts'ob3f5b4c2001-11-05 19:22:02 -0500254 * chattr.1.in: Update the man page to document the EXT2_NOTAIL_FL
255 flag.
256
257 * chattr.c: Add support for the EXT2_NOTAIL_FL flag.
258
Theodore Ts'o6430bd62001-11-05 18:58:46 -0500259 * fsck.c (interpret_type): If the "auto" type is specified, make
260 sure interpet_device() is called so that device
261 specifications which use LABEL= or UUID= are translated
262 into a real device name.
263
Theodore Ts'oa5f3f5c2002-02-03 01:00:22 -05002642001-10-12 Theodore Tso <tytso@mit.edu>

283 in use.
284
Theodore Ts'o39567c42001-09-19 15:28:21 -0400285 * tune2fs.8.in: Update man page to reflect the fact that adding or

307 * badblocks.8.in: Fix spelling typo. (Addresses Debian bug #110621)
308
Theodore Ts'o04a96852001-08-30 21:55:26 -0400309 * mke2fs.c (zap_sector): Now takes a third argument, which is how
310 many sectors to clear out. Fixed up Andreas's patch to
311 make it a bit more efficient/compact.
312
Andreas Dilger59f27242001-08-30 15:39:04 -06003132001-08-30 Andreas Dilger <adilger@turbolinux.com>
314
315 * mke2fs.c (main): Zap the second sector of the disk, along with
316 any sectors in the same filesystem block after the superblock.
317 The latter will remove (for example) swapspace signatures
318 on 4kB+ blocksize filesystems. Also when zeroing the "end"
319 of the filesystem don't actually zero the start of a very
320 small device (less than 64 blocks).

326
327 * lsattr.c, chattr.c, mke2fs.c, tune2fs.c, dumpe2fs.c, e2image.c,
328 mklost+found.c: Remove EXT2FS_VERSION from the version

661
Theodore Ts'obe4244b2001-02-08 03:28:18 +0000662 * tune2fs.8.in: Update man page to reflect that 2.0.39 supports
663 sparse_super.
664
Theodore Ts'o8b164f92001-02-08 03:24:18 +0000665 * dumpe2fs.c (list_desc): Fix fencepost error when calculating the
666 range of inode table blocks. Add '0x' to values printed
667 in hex.
668
Theodore Ts'offf18b42001-02-08 03:06:43 +0000669 * chattr.c, lsattr.c: Define the _LARGEFILE64_SOURCE to force the
670 use of the LFS so that lstat will work on large files.
671
Theodore Ts'o02088862001-01-18 01:44:19 +00006722001-01-17 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@valinux.com>
673
Theodore Ts'odc2ec522001-01-18 01:51:15 +0000674 * tune2fs.c, mke2fs.c, tune2fs.8.in, mke2fs.8.in: Change user
675 interface so that -J is used to specify journal options,
676 and -j is used to request creation of a journal using
677 default values. (This is a UI change, but we haven't done
678 a formal release, and it makes things much more consistent
679 with the rest of the options out there.)
680
681 * tune2fs.c: Add support for removing a filesystem from an
682 external journal; we correctly remove the filesystem UUID
683 from the external journal's filesystem list.
684
Theodore Ts'o5683e6e2001-01-18 01:47:48 +0000685 * util.h, util.c (journal_default_size): New function from Andreas
686 Dilger to calculate an appropriate default journal size
687 given a filesystem size.
688
689 * util.c (parse_journal_opts): Allow the creation of a journal as
690 small as 1MB.
691
Theodore Ts'o02088862001-01-18 01:44:19 +0000692 * dumpe2fs.c (print_journal_information): Use s_first_data_block
693 to find the correct block to read the journal superblock.
694
Theodore Ts'o16ed5b32001-01-16 07:47:31 +00006952001-01-15 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@valinux.com>
696
697 * tune2fs.c: Changed the external journal code so that it simply
698 adds a filesystem to a journal; the journal must have bene
699 created via "mke2fs -O journal_dev /dev/XXX".
700
701 * mke2fs.c: Add support for creating an external journal device by
702 using the command "mke2fs -O journal_dev /dev/XXX". Also
703 changed the external journal code so -j device=/dev/XXX it
704 simply adds a filesystem to that journal; the journal must
705 have been created via separate step.
706
707 * dumpe2fs.c (print_journal_information): Add support for dumping
708 information about an external journal device.
709
Theodore Ts'o4055ef72001-01-14 16:11:14 +00007102001-01-14 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@valinux.com>
711
Theodore Ts'o44c09c02001-01-14 17:02:09 +0000712 * mke2fs.c: Add new filesystem types, largefile and largefile4,
713 for those filesystems whose average inode size is 1MB and
714 4MB, respectively. Allow the inode ratio specified to be
715 has high as 4MB. Make the s_max_mount_count vary between
716 20 and 40, to avoid needing to check all of the
717 filesystems at the same time. Add some random jitter to
718 the s_max_mount_count value so that we avoid checking all
719 of the filesystems at the same time when we reboot.
720
Theodore Ts'o08dd8302001-01-14 16:25:58 +0000721 * tune2fs.8.in: Add description of the -j option.
722
Theodore Ts'o4055ef72001-01-14 16:11:14 +0000723 * tune2fs.c (add_journal): Minor fixes from Andreas Dilger. Flush
724 stdout after printing in-progress message.
725 (main): Exit with status code 1 if we failed to determine
726 the mount status of the device.
727
Theodore Ts'odfcdc322001-01-11 15:38:00 +00007282001-01-11 <tytso@snap.thunk.org>
729
Theodore Ts'oc8c071a2001-01-11 16:08:23 +0000730 * e2image.c, mke2fs.c, mklost+found.c, tune2fs.c, util.c,
731 uuidgen.c: Fix gcc -Wall complaints, including one bug in
732 tune2fs caused by a block automatic shadowing version of
733 the variable we really wanted to use, which broke the
734 logic testing to see if the filesystem was mounted.
735
Theodore Ts'o4d404542001-01-11 16:04:59 +0000736 * badblocks.c (flush_bufs): Use ext2fs_sync_device() to sync and
737 flush the device.
738
Theodore Ts'odfcdc322001-01-11 15:38:00 +0000739 * mke2fs.c: Change ino_t to ext2_ino_t.
740
Theodore Ts'o83238152001-01-09 00:16:26 +00007412001-01-08 <tytso@snap.thunk.org>
742
743 * Makefile.in, tune2fs.c: Move e2label functionality into tune2fs,
744 using argv[0] as a dispatch. This allows e2label to be
745 (more) safely used on mounted filesystems.
746
Theodore Ts'o8820c792001-01-06 04:20:03 +00007472001-01-05 <tytso@snap.thunk.org>
748
749 * get_device_by_label.h (get_volume_label_by_spec): Add function
750 prototype.
751
752 * get_device_by_label.c: Use string_copy() instead of strdup() for
753 portability's sake. Fix a few other gcc -Wall
754 complaints.
755
756 * fsck.c (string_copy): Export string_copy() extern.
757
758 * badblocks.c: Fix various gcc -Wall complaints, including
759 an incorrect reference to sync in flush_bufs().
760
Theodore Ts'o63985322001-01-03 17:02:13 +00007612001-01-03 <tytso@snap.thunk.org>
762
763 * tune2fs.c (update_feature_set, add_journal): Moved to separate
764 functions. Added ability to add and remove the journal
765 while the filesystem is live. Added support for setting
766 a time-based UUID. Removed zero-initialized static variables.
767
768 * mke2fs.c, util.c, util.h (strcasecmp, proceed_question,
769 check_plausibility, parse_journal_opts, check_mount):
770 Moved functions to util.c so they can be used by tune2fs.
771
772 * mke2fs.c (main): Change ext2fs_add_journal_fs() to
773 ext2fs_add_journal_inode() to reflect function renaming.
774
Theodore Ts'ob21e38a2001-01-01 15:26:58 +00007752001-01-01 <tytso@snap.thunk.org>
776
Theodore Ts'oef9abe52001-01-01 15:31:53 +0000777 * mke2fs.c, e2image.c: Removed references to struct ext2fs_sb to
778 struct ext2_super_block.
779
Theodore Ts'ob21e38a2001-01-01 15:26:58 +0000780 * tune2fs.c (main): Add support to allow HAS_JOURNAL flag to be
781 cleared, but only if the filesystem is unmounted or
782 mounted read-only. Changed struct ext2fs_sb to struct
Theodore Ts'oef9abe52001-01-01 15:31:53 +0000783 ext2_super_block, and cleaned up old code which was needed
784 for old versions of ext2_fs.h (not needed since we're
785 using our own version now).
Theodore Ts'ob21e38a2001-01-01 15:26:58 +0000786
Theodore Ts'o9a718842000-12-31 13:48:12 +00007872000-12-31 <tytso@snap.thunk.org>
788
Theodore Ts'od4cf2fc2000-12-31 14:09:38 +0000789 * fsck.c (check_all): Call interpet_device to resolve LABEL= and
790 UUID= right away so that the device_already_active() logic
791 can do the right thing. Also cleaned up the the root
792 filesystem logic checking code; fixed up a logic bug with
793 the parallel_root option.
794
Theodore Ts'of10748d2000-12-31 13:55:14 +0000795 * lsattr.1.in: Add pointer to chattr man page for definition of
796 the file attributes.
797
798 * lsattr.c (list_attributes): Minor cleanup to smooth out logic
799 flow. Also removed static initialized variables to zero.
800
Theodore Ts'o9a718842000-12-31 13:48:12 +0000801 * chattr.c (decode_arg, get_flag): Use a table-driven method for
802 decoding the ext2 file flags character options. Add
803 support for the journaled data flag.
804
805 * chattr.1.in: Document the -j/+j/=j flag.
806
Theodore Ts'o16ad3332000-12-31 03:21:56 +00008072000-12-30 <tytso@snap.thunk.org>
808
809 * mke2fs.8.in: Minor clarity edit.
810
811 * mke2fs.c (usage): Document the -j option.
812 (main): Print the number blocks used in the journal.
813
Theodore Ts'ob9fd8c12000-12-29 03:10:45 +00008142000-12-28 <tytso@snap.thunk.org>
815
816 * base_device.c (base_device): Add support for DAC960 device
817 names.
818
819 * fsck.c (device_already_active): Handle the case where
820 base_device doesn't know how to interpret the device name,
821 instead of core dumping.
822
Theodore Ts'o74a74d22000-12-09 14:33:29 +00008232000-12-09 <tytso@snap.thunk.org>
824
Theodore Ts'od48755e2000-12-09 14:36:04 +0000825 * mke2fs.c (main, parse_journal_opts): Add support for creating V1
826 superblocks. We now pass in a journal_flags field to the
827 journal creation routines for this purpose.
828
829 * mke2fs.c: Remove zero initializers to save a few bytes from the
830 executable image. (Are we excited yet?)
831
Theodore Ts'o74a74d22000-12-09 14:33:29 +0000832 * findsuper.c: And non-subtle copyright licensing restriction to
833 get Yann to remove this program from the Debian package. :-)
834
Theodore Ts'o793e27d2000-12-03 06:33:56 +00008352000-12-03 <tytso@snap.thunk.org>
836
837 * fsck.c (device_already_active): Change to use new version of
838 base_device() which now returns dynamically allocated
839 memory.
840
841 * base_device.c (base_device): New version moved from fsck.c which
842 now understands ugly devfs names. (Debian bug #65181)
843
844 * base_device.tst: Test case for base_device.c
845
Theodore Ts'oe1c6b2f2000-12-02 06:19:33 +00008462000-12-02 <tytso@snap.thunk.org>
847
Theodore Ts'o2d091792000-12-02 07:03:32 +0000848 * fsck.8.in: Add clarification that filesystems with a fs_passno
849 of 0 are skipped with the -A option. (Debian wishlist/bug
850 #63442)
851
Theodore Ts'oe9f9dd82000-12-02 06:35:07 +0000852 * fsck.c (wait_one): When we let a new fsck take control of the
853 console to display the progress bar, set FLAG_PROGRESS to
854 so that fsck knows not to start new processes during an
855 fsck pass with the progress bar. (Should fix debian bug
856 #65267)
857
Theodore Ts'oe1c6b2f2000-12-02 06:19:33 +0000858 * tune2fs.8.in: Add clarifying statement about converting user and
859 group names to uid's before storing them in the
860 superblock. (Debian bug #67446)
861
Theodore Ts'o8ddaa662000-11-17 04:55:24 +00008622000-11-16 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@valinux.com>
863
864 * mke2fs.c(main): Expand the -j option so that it parses
865 option=argument style options, and add support for
866 creating filesystems with external journals.
867
868 * mke2fs.8.in: Document new syntax for the -j option.
869
Theodore Ts'o72ed1262000-11-12 19:32:20 +00008702000-11-05 <tytso@snap.thunk.org>
871
872 * e2image.c, Makefile.in: New program which saves ext2 metadata to
873 a file for people who need a last-ditch saving throw.
874
Theodore Ts'o85ef4ae2000-10-24 19:33:45 +00008752000-10-24 <tytso@snap.thunk.org>
876
Theodore Ts'of6f65832000-10-25 03:01:37 +0000877 * mke2fs.c (PRS): Applied Andreas Dilger's patch to make the -r -s
878 handling a bit more sane. (Even though -s is deprecated
879 at this point.)
880
Theodore Ts'o0056be12000-10-25 02:24:33 +0000881 * get_device_by_label.c: Apply fix from Erik Troan to support 16
882 character labels.
883
Theodore Ts'o43819662000-10-25 02:06:09 +0000884 * fsck.c (device_already_active): Add a special case check for MD
885 devices, so we don't try to check them in parallel with
886 other devices.
887
Theodore Ts'o85ef4ae2000-10-24 19:33:45 +0000888 * mke2fs.c (PRS, main), mke2fs.8.in: Add support for the -j
889 option, which builds an ext2/3 filesystem with an ext3
890 journal.
891
Theodore Ts'oe294cf22000-10-24 18:41:44 +00008922000-10-24 <tytso@valinux.com>
893
894 * mke2fs.c (zap_sector): Fix really stupid typo which gcc 2.95
895 didn't catch.
896
Theodore Ts'o3f1e9a52000-09-12 21:21:52 +00008972000-09-12 <tytso@valinux.com>
898
899 * fsck.c: Add base device definitions for hd[e-h], for those
900 systems with four IDE interfaces.
901
Theodore Ts'od7e39b02000-09-11 17:01:35 +00009022000-09-11 <tytso@valinux.com>
903
904 * mke2fs.c (zap_sector): Fix error message printed when zap_sector
905 fails.
906
907 * dumpe2fs.c (list_desc): Fixed format string bug when printing
908 the inode table location in non-hex format.
909
Theodore Ts'o556ccbd2000-08-20 19:11:05 +00009102000-08-20 <tytso@valinux.com>
911
912 * get_device_by_label.c: Add call to ext2fs_find_block_device if
913 we can't find the device using the name given by
914 /proc/partitions. (This can happen if devfs is compiled
915 into the kernel, but not mounted.)
916
Theodore Ts'o80c22c92000-08-14 15:32:11 +00009172000-06-27 Andreas Dilger <adilger@turbolabs.com>
918
919 * dumpe2fs.c (usage): add fhx options to usage message, add -x option
920 to print out the per-group block numbers in hex, add line for
921 location of primary/backup superblock and group descriptors
922
923 * mke2fs.c: rename max to group_blk_max avoid potential macro conflict
924
Theodore Ts'oe41784e2000-08-14 14:44:15 +00009252000-08-14 <tytso@valinux.com>
926
927 * mke2fs.c (zap_sector): Change zap_bootsect to more general
928 zap_sect.
929 (main): Clear the superblock when starting mke2fs, to
930 avoid leaving the filesystem in an inconsistent state.
931
Theodore Ts'o28412de2000-07-27 02:45:55 +00009322000-07-26 <tytso@valinux.com>
933
934 * get_device_by_label.c: Improve /proc/partitions parsing in
935 fsck, and speed up fsck -a.
936
Theodore Ts'of9e67062000-07-13 23:25:54 +00009372000-07-13 <tytso@valinux.com>
938
939 * Release of E2fsprogs 1.19
940
Theodore Ts'oa551b782000-07-13 22:05:31 +00009412000-07-13 <tytso@snap.thunk.org>
942
943 * badblocks.8.in: Added text explaining that the -n and -w options
944 are mutually exclusive.
945
946 * badblocks.c (usage): Fix usage message to make it clear that the
947 block count must be specified if the starting block is to
948 be specified. (The starting block should be a option, in
949 the long run.)
950
951 * badblocks.c (test_nd): Save and restore the currently_testing
952 variable before going into the write verification loop.
953 This avoids a loop termination problem if the last block
954 on the disk is bad. Also, turn off the SIGALRM signal
955 while restoring blocks after the user types ^C. The
956 num_saved variable is now static so that it won't get
957 clobbered by a longjmp. buf_used and bb_count are no
958 longer static, since they aren't used by the cleanup
959 routines anymore.
960
961 * badblocks.c (main): Removed an unsued varaible (buf_size).
962 Fixed bad getopt argument that didn't allow the 'b' option
963 to take an argument. Added error checking when parsing
964 the starting block number. Fixed lint warning in fscanf
965 format string.
966
Theodore Ts'o35964b52000-07-06 13:19:43 +00009672000-07-06 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@valinux.com>
968
Theodore Ts'o19c68912000-07-07 03:25:13 +0000969 * fsck.c (execute, wait_one): Treat fsck.ext3 the same as
970 fsck.ext2 (because they are the same) for the purposes of
971 the progress bar display logic.
972
Theodore Ts'o45d9e2f2000-07-07 03:12:54 +0000973 * tune2fs.8.in: Update manual page to document what happens if
974 max_mount_count is negative.
975
976 * tune2fs.c (main): Allow setting the maximal count value to be
977 negative, since the kernel interprets that as forcing a
978 check.
979
Theodore Ts'o5b1519b2000-07-06 14:16:08 +0000980 * fsck.c (lookup, load_fs_info, check_all): Use lazy evaluation
981 for calling interpret_device(), since this requires root
982 privileges if the partitions need to be scanned.
983 Otherwise, it's not possible to do non-proot fsck's for
984 removeable devices such as floppies if there are any
985 LABEL= or UUID= entries in /etc/fstab.
986
Theodore Ts'o981dc562000-07-06 14:13:29 +0000987 * badblocks.c (check_mount, main): Check to see if the filesystem
988 is mounted before doing a read/write or non-destructive
989 test. This can be overriden using the new -f option.
990
Theodore Ts'o35964b52000-07-06 13:19:43 +0000991 * badblocks.8.in: Update manual page to reflect that the
992 blocks-count parameter is now optional. Also properly
Theodore Ts'o981dc562000-07-06 14:13:29 +0000993 document the start-block parameter. Added documentation
994 for the -f option.
Theodore Ts'o35964b52000-07-06 13:19:43 +0000995
996 * badblocks.c (main): Allow the blocks-count parameter to be
997 optional. If it's not specified, use the size of the
998 device as a default.
999
Theodore Ts'od49a22b2000-07-06 00:31:27 +000010002000-07-05 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@valinux.com>
1001
1002 * badblocks.c (test_nd): Significantly simplify the logic so that
1003 it's more obviously what's going on. Fixed a few
1004 potential cases which weren't handled correctly in the
1005 old, overly complicated logic.
1006 (flush_bufs): Now doesn't take a second argument, and
1007 always forces a sync; this is required before it's really
1008 safe to call BLKFLSBUF, at least for some kernels.
1009
Theodore Ts'o26ab5312000-05-29 15:05:42 +000010102000-05-29 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@valinux.com>
1011
1012 * mke2fs.c (PRS): Add a much more specific error message if the
1013 filesystem size is defaulted and get_device_size returns a
1014 size of zero. Otherwise, users get a confusing "invalid
1015 argument while passed to ext2 library" error message.
1016
Theodore Ts'o4ea0a112000-05-08 13:33:17 +000010172000-05-08 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@valinux.com>
1018
Theodore Ts'oc96e5112000-05-08 14:47:15 +00001019 * fsck.c (interpret_device): Add better error messages if a UUID=
1020 or LABEL= specification is given.
1021

1117
1118 * badblocks.c: Folded in patches David Beattie <dbeattie@usa.net>.
1119 Need to do cleanup before release: use of GCC extensions
1120 (dynamic arrays); unclean coding tricks (use of || instead
1121 of if statements, etc.). Comments from David Beattie:
1122
1123 "I added non-destructive write-testing, and quite a few
1124 other features. The non-destructive write testing,
1125 triggered by new "-n" command-line option, will write test
1126 patterns to the disk, but only after reading data off the
1127 disk into memory. Then, comparing the test patterns gives
1128 a result as to whether or not those sectors are reliable.
1129 Finally, the original data is written back.
1130
1131 To streamline this operation, I added another option, "-c
1132 blocks_at_once", which will give the number of disk blocks
1133 to process at one time (mnemonic--"count"). I made this
1134 default to 16 (as in the read-only testing mode), and also
1135 affect the read-only testing mode. Of course, read-only
1136 mode needs (count * block_size) amount of memory, and
1137 non-destructive read-write needs 3 times that much, so it
1138 makes sense to do the calculations and not overrun
1139 available RAM...I would have liked to implement and
1140 auto-memory-usage heuristic, but I have no idea if it's
1141 even possible to determine the amount of free memory on a
1142 Unix system except by reading /proc entries, and that
1143 didn't seem portable. I did NOT make this blocks_at_once
1144 affect the behavior of the test_rw routine, as it is
1145 processing the whole disk at once, anyway.
1146
1147 I *think* that I got higher detection rates on my hard
1148 drive using random test data than patterned test data, so
1149 my non-destructive mode initializes its test data buffer
1150 randomly.
1151
1152 I fixed a typo in flush_bufs that caused the ioctl
1153 BLKFLSBUF to never get compiled into the program.
1154
1155 Also, I added an "undocumented" (I didn't put it into the
1156 usage message; you can if you think it's useful) "-h"
1157 option to specify the host device to flush--useful if you
1158 want to test out my "non-destructive" code on something
1159 other than a hard drive, such as a file on a hard drive,
1160 and want the host hard drive to flush.
1161
1162 I provided support for an "input" file (via option "-i",
1163 similar to the "-o" option)...containing a list of
1164 already-known bad blocks; it will skip testing those
1165 blocks, thus adding speed to the bad block scan (on my
1166 computer, hitting a physically bad block causes a
1167 half-second-or-more freeze as the kernel waits for the
1168 hard drive to give up and reset itself; pretty annoying
1169 when you already know the block is bad from a previous
1170 scan).
1171
1172 Finally, the real killer, the persistent re-scan (option:
1173 "-p num_passes") that I created will, if desired,
1174 persistently re-scan the drive until it has completed a
1175 user-decidable number of passes in a row during which no
1176 new bad blocks are found. On my drive, I would see
1177 behavior that a certain percentage of bad blocks would be
1178 found with each pass (it was not reliable in the defective
1179 areas!), so I wanted it to check it over and over again
1180 until it didn't find any more, several times. Perhaps
1181 this will be useful to others. Defaults of course to
1182 zero, meaning it will stop after the first pass. I used
1183 "-p 2" on my drive, and it ran for 2 1/2 days...then used
1184 "-p 3" a couple days later and it ran for a few more
1185 hours, and since then the rest of my drive has been
1186 completely reliable.
1187
1188 Implementation of these last two features, "-i" and "-p",
1189 I did using a bb_list from libext2fs. I debated whether
1190 bad blocks input through "-i" should be output into the
1191 "-o" file (or stdout, of course), and decided against it,
1192 but left the code to do so in place, commented out, just
1193 for your information.
1194
1195 In order to maintain data integrity upon interruption of a
1196 non-destructive-write test, I created a signal handler
1197 which I install which will write back whatever original
1198 disk data is in the buffers upon any of the fatal signals
1199 (except SIGKILL, of course).
1200
1201 Of course, ideally, the new options would be reflected in
1202 the badblocks manual page, but I am not experienced at
1203 manual page modification; if you decide my patch to
1204 badblocks should be incorporated into the distribution, I
1205 could learn how to update the manpage and other
1206 documentation, or you could do it for me after exercising
1207 your opinions, if you have any, on exactly what the
1208 command-line parameters should be called and which ones
1209 should be in the distribution."

1414
1415 * dumpe2fs.c, dumpe2fs.8.in: Added new command-line options which
1416 allow a filesystem expert to specify the superblock and
1417 blocksize when opening a filesystem. This is mainly
1418 useful when examining the remains of a toasted filesystem.

1432 * fsck.c (fsck_device): Print an error message if the user passes
1433 in a device or directory name which isn't found in /etc/fstab.
1434 Allow the location of /etc/fstab to be overridden by
1435 the FSTAB_FILE environment variable.

14371999-01-30 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1438
1439 * mke2fs.c (write_inode_tables): Add kludge code so that when the
1440 MKE2FS_SYNC environment variable is set, mke2fs will sync
1441 every MKE2FS_SYNC block groups, while it is writing out
1442 the inode tables. This is to work around a VM bug in the
1443 2.0 kernel. I've heard a report that a RAID user was able
1444 to trigger it even using a 2.2 kernel.

1453 debugging information about when fsck is waiting for jobs
1454 to finish.

1832
Theodore Ts'o62c06f71997-04-29 14:34:47 +00001833Thu May 16 11:12:30 1996 Theodore Ts'o <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1834
1835 * Release of E2fsprogs version 1.04

1850
1851Tue Mar 5 03:51:35 1996 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1852
1853 * mke2fs.8.in: Fix a few minor typo's in the man page.

1857
1858Mon Feb 5 22:19:49 1996 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1859
1860 * fsck.c (check_all, PRS): Added new flag -P, which turns on the
1861 parallel root option. This allows you to check the root
1862 filesystem in parallel with the other filesystems. Note
1863 that this is not the safest thing in the world to do,
1864 since if the root filesystem is in doubt things like
1865 the e2fsck executable might be corrupted! But some
1866 sysadmins, who don't want to repartition the root
1867 filesystem to be small and compact, may really want this
1868 option turned on.
1869
Theodore Ts'o74becf31997-04-26 14:37:06 +00001870Wed Jan 31 11:06:08 1996 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>

1875
1876 * mke2fs.c (check_plausibility): Add check to warn user if they
1877 are trying to mke2fs the whole disk. (/dev/hda
1878 vs. /dev/hda1)

1880Fri Dec 15 19:09:56 1995 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1881
1882 * fsck.c (check_all): If we break out of the loop because we are
1883 serializing and have just started at fsck we haven't
1884 finished the pass. We need to go round again in case there
1885 are more filesystems to be done in this pass. (Patch
1886 submitted by Mike Jagdis)
1887
1888Sat Dec 9 10:07:16 1995 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1889
1890 * dumpe2fs.c (in_use): test_bit() was renamed to
1891 ext2fs_test_bit().
1892
Theodore Ts'o297f47a1997-04-26 14:25:20 +00001893Mon Oct 30 20:21:18 1995 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1894
1895 * fsck.c (fsck_device): Check fstype instead of type; this was a
1896 stupid typo which caused coredumps in some cases.
1897
Theodore Ts'oa418d3a1997-04-26 14:00:26 +00001898Thu Oct 26 12:05:18 1995 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1899
1900 * Makefile.in (install): Strip programs when they are installed.
1901
1902Fri Aug 18 15:10:40 1995 Theodore Y. Ts'o <tytso@dcl>
1903
1904 * mke2fs.c (PRS): Move call of check_mount() from main() to PRS(),
1905 so we do the check to see if the filesystem is mounted
1906 *before* we try to determine the size of the device.
1907
1908Wed Sep 6 23:34:07 1995 Remy Card <card@bbj>
1909
1910 * fsck.c (load_fs_info): Load the informations from /etc/fstab in
1911 the same order.
1912
1913Thu Aug 17 22:33:09 1995 <tytso@rsts-11.mit.edu>
1914
1915 * mke2fs.c (check_mount): Use the new ext2fs_check_if_mounted()
1916 function to determine if the device is mounted.
1917
1918 * mke2fs.c (PRS): Change call to use the new
1919 ext2fs_get_device_size() function in order to determine
1920 the size of the filesystem. Remove get_size() and
1921 is_valid_offset(), which are no longer called.
1922
1923Fri Aug 11 08:26:24 1995 Theodore Y. Ts'o <tytso@lurch.mit.edu>
1924
1925 * fsck.c (fsck_device): Make sure fstype has been set by the user
1926 and that it does not begin with "no" and the user has
1927 specified exactly one type before using it as the type to
1928 check.
1929
1930Fri Aug 11 14:17:18 1995 Remy Card <card@bbj>
1931
1932 * badblocks.8:
1933 * chattr.1:
1934 * dumpe2fs.8:
1935 * fsck.8:
1936 * lsattr.1:
1937 * mke2fs.8:
1938 * mklost+found.8:
1939 * tune2fs.8: Updated date and version number.
1940
1941Thu Aug 10 14:18:36 1995 Remy Card <card@bbj>
1942
1943 * tune2fs.c: Fixed a bug which prevented the use of user and group
1944 names with the -g and -u options. Thanks to Jean Christophe
1945 ANDRE <progfou@mycrob.cafard.freenix.fr>.
1946
1947 * mke2fs.8:
1948 * tune2fs.8: Fixed a spelling error in Ted's name :-)
1949
1950Wed Aug 9 20:41:54 1995 Theodore Y. Ts'o <tytso@dcl>
1951
1952 * mke2fs.c (count_blocks): Divide the size by
1953 EXT2_BLOCK_SIZE(&param), instead of assuming that the
1954 blocksize is always 1024 bytes.
1955
1956Sat Aug 5 12:00:51 1995 Theodore Y. Ts'o <tytso@lurch.mit.edu>
1957
1958 * mke2fs.c (PRS): Use malloc() instead of alloca() --- alloca() is
1959 not portable!! In any case putenv() in some systems must
1960 take a static character array or malloc()'ed memory;
1961 passing memory allocated using alloca() to putenv() is not
1962 advisable.
1963
1964 * chattr.c (chattr_dir_proc):
1965 * lsattr.c (lsattr_dir_proc): Use malloc() instead of alloca() ---
1966 alloca is not portable!
1967
1968 * fsck.c (fsck_device): If the filesystem type is specified by the
1969 user using the -t option, let it override the type in
1970 /etc/fstab.
1971
1972 * fsck.c (strdup): Don't build strdup() if the system defines it.
1973
1974Mon Jun 12 19:15:10 1995 Theodore Y. Ts'o (tytso@dcl)
1975
1976 * chattr.c, lsattr.c: Include <sys/types.h> for <dirent.h>'s
1977 benefit.
1978
1979 * The $(UPROGS) go in bin, not sbin.
1980
1981 * badblocks.c, chattr.c, dumpe2fs.c, fsck.c, lsattr.c, mke2fs.c,
1982 tune2fs.c: Don't include <getopt.h> if it doesn't exist.
1983
1984Mon Jun 12 16:36:04 1995 Theodore Y. Ts'o <tytso@dcl>
1985
1986 * badblocks.c, chattr.c, dumpe2fs.c, fsck.c, lsattr.c, mke2fs.c,
1987 tune2fs.c: Only include getopt.h if HAVE_GETOPT_H is defined.
1988
1989Sat Jun 10 23:37:09 1995 Theodore Y. Ts'o <tytso@lurch.mit.edu>
1990
1991 * chattr.c: Include errno.h, since we use errno
1992
1993 * fsck.c (load_fs_info): If HAVE_MNTENT_H is not defined,
1994 explicitly initialize filesys_info to be NULL.
1995
1996 * mke2fs.c: Include the stdio.h and errno.h header files
1997
1998Thu Jun 8 13:25:23 1995 Miles Bader <miles@churchy.gnu.ai.mit.edu>
1999
2000 * mke2fs.c: Only include <linux/fs.h> if we can.
2001 (get_size): Don't try to use the BLKGETSIZE ioctl unless it's defined.
2002 (check_mount): Only check to see if the device is mounted if
2003 HAVE_MNTENT_H is defined (by configure).
2004
2005 * fsck.c (load_fs_info): Only try to get info about filesystems if
2006 HAVE_MNTENT_H is defined (by configure).
2007 (main): Allocate space for a new fsck_path instead of append to a
2008 statically sized buffer.
2009 (PRS): Use alloca to allocate the new path string, instead of
2010 having a fixed size buffer (which was the wrong size anyway).
2011
2012 * chattr.c (chattr_dir_proc): Use alloca to allocate space for a
2013 filename instead of using a fixed-size buffer.
2014 * lsattr.c (lsattr_dir_proc): Ditto.
2015 * mklost+fond.c (main): Calculate the actual needed size for the
2016 path buffer instead of using MAXPATHLEN (which not all systems have).
2017
2018 * badblocks.c: Only include linux include files if we have them.
2019 (flush_bufs): New function to flush a block device, optionally
2020 syncing it first. This replaces other copies of this code.
2021 (test_ro): Replace calls to ioctl with flush_bufs().
2022 (test_rw): Ditto.
2023
2024 * Makefile.in: Rewritten to conform to GNU coding standards and
2025 support separate compilation directories.
2026
Theodore Ts'of3db3561997-04-26 13:34:30 +00002027Sat Mar 11 10:59:58 1995 Theodore Y. Ts'o <tytso@localhost>
2028
2029 * mke2fs.c (main, zap_bootblock): Added new function
2030 zap_bootblock() which clears the first 512 bytes of the
2031 filesystem. This protects the filesystem from being
2032 misidentified as a MS-DOS FAT filesystem.
2033
2034 * badblocks.c (alarm_intr, test_ro, test_rw): Increase the space
2035 allocated for printing the block numbers, so that the
2036 display doesn't get corrupted when running badblocks on a
2037 very large partition.
2038
2039 * badblocks.c (do_test, test_ro, test_rw): Added missing cast to
2040 ext2_loff_t, so that when checking a large device,
2041 spurious seek errors aren't reported.
2042
2043 * mke2fs.c (count_blocks): Declare mid to be of type ext2_loff_t
2044 instead of type int, so that it works for filesystems
2045 greater than 2 GB. (Fortunately count_blocks is only
2046 called if the device does not support the BLKGETSIZE
2047 ioctl, which most do.)
2048
2049 * fsck.c (ignore): Add check to ignore filesystems with a pass
2050 number of zero. (This check was accidentally deleted at
2051 during 0.5b development.)
2052
2053Sat Dec 31 00:47:16 1994 <tytso@rsx-11.mit.edu>
2054
2055 * mke2fs.c (new_table_block, alloc_tables, PRS, main): Add a new
2056 option, -S, which only writes the superblock and group
2057 descriptors. Useful for recovering when all of the
2058 superblocks are corrupted somehow (as a last ditch
2059 measure).
2060
2061 Also, don't bother initializing the bitmap blocks in
2062 alloc_tables(), since they will be overwritten at the end
2063 anyway. (Should speed up mke2fs by a little.)
2064
2065Tue Dec 6 02:20:55 1994 <tytso@rsx-11.mit.edu>
2066
2067 * fsck.c (main): Fix stupid typo where a null inst would be freed.
2068
2069 * fsck.c (wait_one): Check WIFEXITED on status before trying to
2070 extract the exit status. In other cases, return
2071 FSCK_ERROR if the back end processor exited with a signal.
2072
2073Tue Nov 15 10:20:00 1994 Remy Card <card@bbj>
2074
2075 * tune2fs.c (main): Fixed a bug which prevented the use of the
2076 new options.
2077 Added the `w' (week) suffix recognition in the check interval.
2078
2079Sun Nov 13 15:58:48 1994 (tytso@rsx-11)
2080
2081 * fsck.c (load_fs_info): If the user has an obviously old
2082 /etc/fstab file, issue a warning message and assume that
2083 all partitions should be checked.
2084
2085Sat Nov 12 00:33:18 1994 (tytso@rsx-11)
2086
2087 * dumpe2fs.c (list_desc): Update to new inode and block bitmap
2088 structures.
2089
2090 * mke2fs.c (create_root_dir): Create the root directory owned by
2091 the effective uid.
2092
2093Mon Nov 7 22:04:37 1994 Remy Card <card@bbj>
2094
2095 * tune2fs.c (main.c): Added support for new options:
2096 -r reserved_blocks_count, -g reserved_gid, -u reserved_uid.
2097
2098Sun Aug 21 00:57:33 1994 Theodore Y. Ts'o (tytso@rt-11)
2099
2100 * fsck.c (ignore): If the pass number is 0, ignore the filesystem.
2101
2102Wed Aug 17 21:55:03 1994 Remy Card (card@bbj)
2103
2104 * badblocks.c (test_rw): Added verbose output like in the
2105 read-only test.
2106
2107 (do_test and test_rw): Use the llseek system call if available.
2108
2109 * chattr.c: Added support for new attributes.
2110
2111 * lsattr.c: Added support for long format.
2112
2113 * mke2fs.c (usage): Fixed bogus usage message.
2114
2115 (valid_offset): Use the llseek system call if available.
2116
2117Wed Aug 17 10:50:57 1994 Theodore Y. Ts'o (tytso@rt-11)
2118
2119 * mke2fs.c (handle_bad_blocks): Check to see if a bad block is
2120 where a backup superblock/group descriptor is stored. If so,
2121 print a warning message and adjust the superblock counts so that
2122 they are correct. (Otherwise, the bad block will get counted
2123 twice and the # of free blocks count will be wrong.)
2124
2125 (alloc_tables): Removed code which calcualated the free block
2126 statistics, which was moved to lib/ext2fs/initialize.c. This
2127 allows the bad block code to adjust the group descriptor
2128 statistics if necessary.
