58XML is a standard for
59markup-based structured documents. Here is an example XML
60document:

61

62<EXAMPLE prop1="gnome is great" prop2="& linux too">
63

64
Welcome to Gnome

65

66 <chapter>
67
The Linux adventure

68
bla bla bla ...

69

70
...

71 </chapter>
72</EXAMPLE>

73
The first line specifies that it's an XML document and gives useful
74information about its encoding. Then the document is a text format whose
75structure is specified by tags between brackets. Each tag opened has
76to be closed. XML is pedantic about this. However, if a tag is empty
77(no content), a single tag can serve as both the opening and closing tag if
78it ends with
/>
rather than with
>
. Note
79that, for example, the image tag has no content (just an attribute) and is
80closed by ending the tag with
/>
.

81
XML can be applied sucessfully to a wide range of uses, from long term
82structured document maintenance (where it follows the steps of SGML) to
83simple data encoding mechanisms like configuration file formatting (glade),
84spreadsheets (gnumeric), or even shorter lived documents such as WebDAV where
85it is used to encode remote calls between a client and a server.
