272Core and builtins
273-----------------
274
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000275- Unicode objects will no longer raise an exception when being
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000276 compared equal or unequal to a string and a UnicodeDecodeError
277 exception occurs, e.g. as result of a decoding failure.
Neal Norwitz56423e52006-08-13 18:11:08 +0000278
Marc-André Lemburg040f76b2006-08-14 10:55:19 +0000279 Instead, the equal (==) and unequal (!=) comparison operators will
280 now issue a UnicodeWarning and interpret the two objects as
281 unequal. The UnicodeWarning can be filtered as desired using
282 the warning framework, e.g. silenced completely, turned into an
283 exception, logged, etc.
284
285 Note that compare operators other than equal and unequal will still
286 raise UnicodeDecodeError exceptions as they've always done.
Neal Norwitz8a87f5d2006-08-12 17:03:09 +0000287
Marc-André Lemburg757ea272006-08-14 11:44:34 +0000288- Fix segfault when doing string formatting on subclasses of long.

291 with new-style classes.
292
293- Fix bug related to __len__ functions returning negative values with
294 classic classes.
295
296- Patch #1538606, Fix __index__() clipping. There were some problems
297 discovered with the API and how integers that didn't fit into Py_ssize_t
298 were handled. This patch attempts to provide enough alternatives
299 to effectively use __index__.
300
Martin v. Löwisab2f8f72006-08-09 07:57:39 +0000301- Bug #1536021: __hash__ may now return long int; the final hash
302 value is obtained by invoking hash on the long int.
303
Thomas Hellerab1049c2006-08-08 17:37:00 +0000304- Bug #1536786: buffer comparison could emit a RuntimeWarning.

307 sys.stdin is closed.
308
Thomas Heller74d36f02006-08-04 18:17:40 +0000309- On Windows, the PyErr_Warn function is now exported from
310 the Python dll again.
311
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000312- Bug #1191458: tracing over for loops now produces a line event
313 on each iteration. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc
314 magic number. This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5c1
315 will be regenerated.

329
Marc-André Lemburg574cfea2006-08-16 16:11:01 +0000330- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0. The change to

437
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000438- _PyWeakref_GetWeakrefCount() now returns a Py_ssize_t; it previously
Neal Norwitzc5e060d2006-08-02 06:14:22 +0000439 returned a long (see PEP 353).
440
Neal Norwitzf71ec5a2006-07-30 06:57:04 +0000441- Bug #1515471: string.replace() accepts character buffers again.
442
Neal Norwitz07aadb12006-07-30 06:55:48 +0000443- Add PyErr_WarnEx() so C code can pass the stacklevel to warnings.warn().
444 This provides the proper warning for struct.pack().
445 PyErr_Warn() is now deprecated in favor of PyErr_WarnEx().
446
Neal Norwitz0d62a062006-07-30 06:53:31 +0000447- Patch #1531113: Fix augmented assignment with yield expressions.
448 Also fix a SystemError when trying to assign to yield expressions.
449
Phillip J. Ebyf7575d02006-07-28 21:12:07 +0000450- Bug #1529871: The speed enhancement patch #921466 broke Python's compliance
451 with PEP 302. This was fixed by adding an ``imp.NullImporter`` type that is
452 used in ``sys.path_importer_cache`` to cache non-directory paths and avoid
453 excessive filesystem operations during imports.
454
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000455- Bug #1521947: When checking for overflow, ``PyOS_strtol()`` used some
456 operations on signed longs that are formally undefined by C.
457 Unfortunately, at least one compiler now cares about that, so complicated
458 the code to make that compiler happy again.
459
Martin v. Löwis982e9fe2006-07-24 12:54:17 +0000460- Bug #1524310: Properly report errors from FindNextFile in os.listdir.

471
Georg Brandl9dceedb2006-07-12 15:31:17 +0000472- Patch #1521179: Python now accepts the standard options ``--help`` and

474
Andrew M. Kuchling93c928e2006-07-26 17:19:39 +0000475- Bug #1520864: unpacking singleton tuples in a 'for' loop (for x, in) works
Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000476 again. Fixing this problem required changing the .pyc magic number.
Neal Norwitz4ffedad2006-08-04 04:58:47 +0000477 This means that .pyc files generated before 2.5b3 will be regenerated.

Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000479- Bug #1524317: Compiling Python ``--without-threads`` failed.
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000480 The Python core compiles again, and, in a build without threads, the
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000481 new ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dictionary with one entry,

491 for stream decoder, but final=True for the decode function.
492
Georg Brandl07fec3a2006-08-01 18:49:24 +0000493- os.urandom no longer masks unrelated exceptions like SystemExit or

498
Georg Brandle34ac7c2006-07-30 11:07:23 +0000499- Bug #1002398: The documentation for os.path.sameopenfile now correctly
500 refers to file descriptors, not file objects.
501
Tim Petersc10c9d02006-09-05 02:18:09 +0000502- The renaming of the xml package to xmlcore, and the import hackery done
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000503 to make it appear at both names, has been removed. Bug #1511497,
Fred Drakefbdeaad2006-07-29 16:56:15 +0000504 #1513611, and probably others.
505

507 docstrings correctly as it did in Python 2.4.
508
Tim Peters6f681472006-07-27 23:44:37 +0000509- Bug #1529297: The rewrite of doctest for Python 2.4 unintentionally
510 lost that tests are sorted by name before being run. This rarely
511 matters for well-written tests, but can create baffling symptoms if
512 side effects from one test to the next affect outcomes. ``DocTestFinder``
513 has been changed to sort the list of tests it returns.
514
Andrew M. Kuchlingf9b5b8e2006-08-16 14:21:14 +0000515- The distutils version has been changed to 2.5.0, and is now kept

529 value in the traceback module.
530
Greg Ward48fae7a2006-07-23 16:05:51 +0000531- Resync optparse with Optik 1.5.3: minor tweaks for/to tests.
532
Martin v. Löwis426f4a12006-07-18 17:46:31 +0000533- Patch #1524429: Use repr() instead of backticks in Tkinter again.
534
Brett Cannoncaebe222006-07-18 04:41:36 +0000535- Bug #1520914: Change time.strftime() to accept a zero for any position in its
536 argument tuple. For arguments where zero is illegal, the value is forced to
537 the minimum value that is correct. This is to support an undocumented but
538 common way people used to fill in inconsequential information in the time
539 tuple pre-2.4.
540
Bob Ippolito5ea4bf12006-07-15 16:53:15 +0000541- Patch #1220874: Update the binhex module for Mach-O.
542
Barry Warsawb110bad2006-07-21 14:51:07 +0000543- The email package has improved RFC 2231 support, specifically for
544 recognizing the difference between encoded (name*0*=<blah>) and non-encoded
545 (name*0=<blah>) parameter continuations. This may change the types of
546 values returned from email.message.Message.get_param() and friends.
547 Specifically in some cases where non-encoded continuations were used,
548 get_param() used to return a 3-tuple of (None, None, string) whereas now it
549 will just return the string (since non-encoded continuations don't have
550 charset and language parts).
551
552 Also, whereas % values were decoded in all parameter continuations, they are
553 now only decoded in encoded parameter parts.
554
Ronald Oussoren3075e162006-07-25 20:28:55 +0000555- Bug #1517990: IDLE keybindings on MacOS X now work correctly
556
557- Bug #1517996: IDLE now longer shows the default Tk menu when a
558 path browser, class browser or debugger is the frontmost window on MacOS X
559
Barry Warsaw00decd72006-07-27 23:43:15 +0000560- Patch #1520294: Support for getset and member descriptors in types.py,
561 inspect.py, and pydoc.py. Specifically, this allows for querying the type
562 of an object against these built-in types and more importantly, for getting
563 their docstrings printed in the interactive interpreter's help() function.

575
Tim Peters9cab5932006-07-28 00:30:00 +0000576- The ``__reduce__()`` method of the new ``collections.defaultdict`` had

578
Tim Petersbc24eee2006-07-27 01:14:53 +0000579- Bug #1471938: Fix curses module build problem on Solaris 8; patch by

586 arrays, without the need to check the array size before.
587
Thomas Heller6e1ad2e2006-07-13 17:05:13 +0000588- Bug #1521375: When the code in ctypes.util.find_library was

Neal Norwitza1f10902006-07-12 07:28:29 +0000594
Thomas Hellerb4dc2ef2006-07-13 09:53:47 +0000595- Because of a misspelled preprocessor symbol, ctypes was always

608- Bug #1501330: Change test_ossaudiodev to be much more tolerant in terms of

611
Georg Brandl4793aa32006-07-28 18:31:39 +0000612- Patch #1529686: The standard tests ``test_defaultdict``, ``test_iterlen``,
613 ``test_uuid`` and ``test_email_codecs`` didn't actually run any tests when
614 run via ``regrtest.py``. Now they do.

642 again evaluates to a int object, not a long.
643
Neil Schemenauer0e07b602006-07-09 16:16:34 +0000644- Bug #1501934: The scope of global variables that are locally assigned

Neal Norwitzfb48afa2006-07-08 05:31:37 +0000657- Bug #1519018: 'as' is now validated properly in import statements.
658
Neal Norwitz28746ab2006-07-09 22:14:42 +0000659- On 64 bit systems, int literals that use less than 64 bits are
660 now ints rather than longs.
661
Neal Norwitzed657552006-07-10 00:04:44 +0000662- Bug #1512814, Fix incorrect lineno's when code at module scope
663 started after line 256.
664
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000665- New function ``sys._current_frames()`` returns a dict mapping thread
666 id to topmost thread stack frame. This is for expert use, and is
667 especially useful for debugging application deadlocks. The functionality
668 was previously available in Fazal Majid's ``threadframe`` extension
669 module, but it wasn't possible to do this in a wholly threadsafe way from
670 an extension.

687
Thomas Woutersadd19112006-07-05 11:03:49 +0000688- string.Template() now correctly handles tuple-values. Previously,

690 be treated as the value they contain, instead.
691
Martin v. Löwisede77f52006-07-03 13:01:35 +0000692- Bug #822974: Honor timeout in telnetlib.{expect,read_until}

717
Brett Cannon53ab5b72006-06-22 16:49:14 +0000718- Bug #1510580: The 'warnings' module improperly required that a Warning
719 category be either a types.ClassType and a subclass of Warning. The proper
720 check is just that it is a subclass with Warning as the documentation states.
721
Georg Brandlad29e632006-06-21 17:45:17 +0000722- The compiler module now correctly compiles the new try-except-finally

729
Gerhard Häring762fbd32006-07-02 17:48:30 +0000730- The sqlite3 module did cut off data from the SQLite database at the first

732 now.
733
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +0000734Extension Modules
735-----------------
736
Tim Peters112aad32006-07-19 00:03:19 +0000737- #1494314: Fix a regression with high-numbered sockets in 2.4.3. This
738 means that select() on sockets > FD_SETSIZE (typically 1024) work again.
739 The patch makes sockets use poll() internally where available.
Anthony Baxter93ab5fa2006-07-11 02:04:09 +0000740
Thomas Hellerb9cb84f2006-07-10 11:17:37 +0000741- Assigning None to pointer type fields in ctypes structures possible
742 overwrote the wrong fields, this is fixed now.
743
744- Fixed a segfault in _ctypes when ctypes.wintypes were imported
745 on non-Windows platforms.
746
747- Bug #1518190: The ctypes.c_void_p constructor now accepts any
748 integer or long, without range checking.
749
750- Patch #1517790: It is now possible to use custom objects in the ctypes
751 foreign function argtypes sequence as long as they provide a from_param
752 method, no longer is it required that the object is a ctypes type.
753
754- The '_ctypes' extension module now works when Python is configured
755 with the --without-threads option.
756
Martin v. Löwisee1e06d2006-07-02 18:44:00 +0000757- Bug #1513646: os.access on Windows now correctly determines write
758 access, again.
759
Neal Norwitz0f8b31a2006-06-28 06:28:31 +0000760- Bug #1512695: cPickle.loads could crash if it was interrupted with

772
Tim Peters32a83612006-07-10 21:08:24 +0000773- 'configure' now detects the zlib library the same way as distutils.
Thomas Woutersfc34f6c2006-07-06 10:48:28 +0000774 Previously, the slight difference could cause compilation errors of the
775 'zlib' module on systems with more than one version of zlib.
776
Martin v. Löwis4cbd05c2006-07-06 07:05:21 +0000777- The MSI compileall step was fixed to also support a TARGETDIR
778 with spaces in it.
779
Martin v. Löwis88ef6372006-07-06 06:55:58 +0000780- Bug #1517388: sqlite3.dll is now installed on Windows independent

810
Georg Brandla56b9152006-06-19 06:35:54 +0000811- Patch #1507676: Error messages returned by invalid abstract object operations
812 (such as iterating over an integer) have been improved and now include the
813 type of the offending object to help with debugging.
814
Brett Cannonea3912b2006-06-13 21:46:41 +0000815- Bug #992017: A classic class that defined a __coerce__() method that returned
816 its arguments swapped would infinitely recurse and segfault the interpreter.
817
Neal Norwitz909eb122006-06-12 02:13:21 +0000818- Fix the socket tests so they can be run concurrently.
819
Neal Norwitzb9845e72006-06-12 02:11:18 +0000820- Removed 5 integers from C frame objects (PyFrameObject).
Vinay Sajip28e57612006-07-01 10:45:20 +0000821 f_nlocals, f_ncells, f_nfreevars, f_stack_size, f_restricted.

Brett Cannon22565aa2006-06-09 22:31:23 +0000823- Bug #532646: object.__call__() will continue looking for the __call__
824 attribute on objects until one without one is found. This leads to recursion
825 when you take a class and set its __call__ attribute to an instance of the
826 class. Originally fixed for classic classes, but this fix is for new-style.
827 Removes the infinite_rec_3 crasher.
828
Georg Brandl24250812006-06-09 18:45:48 +0000829- The string and unicode methods startswith() and endswith() now accept
830 a tuple of prefixes/suffixes to look for. Implements RFE #1491485.
831
Brett Cannonde3b0522006-06-08 17:00:45 +0000832- Buffer objects, at the C level, never used the char buffer
833 implementation even when the char buffer for the wrapped object was
834 explicitly requested (originally returned the read or write buffer).
835 Now a TypeError is raised if the char buffer is not present but is
836 requested.
837
Georg Brandlddbaa662006-06-04 21:56:52 +0000838- Patch #1346214: Statements like "if 0: suite" are now again optimized
839 away like they were in Python 2.4.
840
Georg Brandlb7c8f542006-05-27 12:30:25 +0000841- Builtin exceptions are now full-blown new-style classes instead of
842 instances pretending to be classes, which speeds up exception handling
843 by about 80% in comparison to 2.5a2.
844
Martin v. Löwisd004fc82006-05-27 08:36:52 +0000845- Patch #1494554: Update unicodedata.numeric and unicode.isnumeric to
846 Unicode 4.1.
847
Georg Brandlf4ef1162006-05-26 18:03:31 +0000848- Patch #921466: sys.path_importer_cache is now used to cache valid and
849 invalid file paths for the built-in import machinery which leads to
850 fewer open calls on startup.
851
Tim Peters696cf432006-05-24 21:10:40 +0000852- Patch #1442927: ``long(str, base)`` is now up to 6x faster for non-power-
853 of-2 bases. The largest speedup is for inputs with about 1000 decimal
854 digits. Conversion from non-power-of-2 bases remains quadratic-time in
855 the number of input digits (it was and remains linear-time for bases
856 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32).
857
Tim Petersb713ec22006-05-23 18:45:30 +0000858- Bug #1334662: ``int(string, base)`` could deliver a wrong answer
859 when ``base`` was not 2, 4, 8, 10, 16 or 32, and ``string`` represented
860 an integer close to ``sys.maxint``. This was repaired by patch
861 #1335972, which also gives a nice speedup.
862
Richard Jonescebbefc2006-05-23 18:28:17 +0000863- Patch #1337051: reduced size of frame objects.
864
865- PyErr_NewException now accepts a tuple of base classes as its
866 "base" parameter.
867
Richard Jones7c88dcc2006-05-23 10:37:38 +0000868- Patch #876206: function call speedup by retaining allocated frame
869 objects.
870
Georg Brandl7b90e162006-05-18 07:01:27 +0000871- Bug #1462152: file() now checks more thoroughly for invalid mode
872 strings and removes a possible "U" before passing the mode to the
873 C library function.
874
Neal Norwitz1004a532006-05-15 07:17:23 +0000875- Patch #1488312, Fix memory alignment problem on SPARC in unicode
876
Neal Norwitz373f0a72006-05-15 07:04:36 +0000877- Bug #1487966: Fix SystemError with conditional expression in assignment
878
Martin v. Löwis879768d2006-05-11 13:28:43 +0000879- WindowsError now has two error code attributes: errno, which carries
880 the error values from errno.h, and winerror, which carries the error
881 values from winerror.h. Previous versions put the winerror.h values
882 (from GetLastError()) into the errno attribute.
883
Martin v. Löwis77736712006-05-04 05:51:03 +0000884- Patch #1475845: Raise IndentationError for unexpected indent.
885
Neal Norwitzc4edb0e2006-05-02 04:43:14 +0000886- Patch #1479181: split open() and file() from being aliases for each other.
887
Tim Peters44bd9862006-06-01 13:49:23 +0000888- Patch #1497053 & bug #1275608: Exceptions occurring in ``__eq__()``
889 methods were always silently ignored by dictionaries when comparing keys.
890 They are now passed through (except when using the C API function
891 ``PyDict_GetItem()``, whose semantics did not change).
892
893- Bug #1456209: In some obscure cases it was possible for a class with a
894 custom ``__eq__()`` method to confuse dict internals when class instances
895 were used as a dict's keys and the ``__eq__()`` method mutated the dict.
896 No, you don't have any code that did this ;-)

904
Brett Cannon6ee7d012006-06-08 16:23:04 +0000905- Change binascii.hexlify to accept a read-only buffer instead of only a char

912 This provides a home for additional function related utilities that are
913 not specifically about functional programming. See PEP 309.

952 results. It could previously incorrectly return 0 in some cases.
953 Fixes SF bug 1493322 (pybsddb bug 1184012).
954
Gregory P. Smithff7d9912006-06-08 05:17:08 +0000955- bsddb: the bsddb.dbtables Modify method now raises the proper error and
956 aborts the db transaction safely when a modifier callback fails.

993
Tim Peters43898b42006-06-14 04:09:25 +0000994- ``difflib``'s ``SequenceMatcher.get_matching_blocks()`` was changed to
995 guarantee that adjacent triples in the return list always describe
996 non-adjacent blocks. Previously, a pair of matching blocks could end
997 up being described by multiple adjacent triples that formed a partition
998 of the matching pair.

1018 for lookup.
1019
Tim Petersd609b1a2006-06-02 23:22:51 +00001020- The functions in the ``pprint`` module now sort dictionaries by key
1021 before computing the display. Before 2.5, ``pprint`` sorted a dictionary
1022 if and only if its display required more than one line, although that
1023 wasn't documented. The new behavior increases predictability; e.g.,
1024 using ``pprint.pprint(a_dict)`` in a doctest is now reliable.

1045
Neal Norwitz7a5fc282006-05-15 06:48:14 +00001046- Patch #721464: pdb.Pdb instances can now be given explicit stdin and

1102-----------------
1103
Thomas Heller1b046642006-04-18 18:51:06 +00001104- Bug #1465834: 'bdist_wininst preinstall script support' was fixed
1105 by converting these apis from macros into exported functions again:
1106
1107 PyParser_SimpleParseFile PyParser_SimpleParseString PyRun_AnyFile
1108 PyRun_AnyFileEx PyRun_AnyFileFlags PyRun_File PyRun_FileEx
1109 PyRun_FileFlags PyRun_InteractiveLoop PyRun_InteractiveOne
1110 PyRun_SimpleFile PyRun_SimpleFileEx PyRun_SimpleString
1111 PyRun_String Py_CompileString
1112
Martin v. Löwis45294a92006-04-18 06:24:08 +00001113- Under COUNT_ALLOCS, types are not necessarily immortal anymore.
1114
Martin v. Löwis19ab6c92006-04-16 18:55:50 +00001115- All uses of PyStructSequence_InitType have been changed to initialize
1116 the type objects only once, even if the interpreter is initialized
1117 multiple times.
1118
Neal Norwitz61546162006-04-14 05:20:28 +00001119- Bug #1454485, array.array('u') could crash the interpreter. This was
1120 due to PyArgs_ParseTuple(args, 'u#', ...) trying to convert buffers (strings)
1121 to unicode when it didn't make sense. 'u#' now requires a unicode string.
1122
1123- Py_UNICODE is unsigned. It was always documented as unsigned, but
1124 due to a bug had a signed value in previous versions.
1125
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001126- Patch #837242: ``id()`` of any Python object always gives a positive
1127 number now, which might be a long integer. ``PyLong_FromVoidPtr`` and
1128 ``PyLong_AsVoidPtr`` have been changed accordingly. Note that it has
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001129 never been correct to implement a ``__hash()__`` method that returns the
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001130 ``id()`` of an object:
Martin v. Löwis0bc2ab92006-04-10 20:28:17 +00001131
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001132 def __hash__(self):
1133 return id(self) # WRONG
1134
1135 because a hash result must be a (short) Python int but it was always
1136 possible for ``id()`` to return a Python long. However, because ``id()``
Tim Peters527f6522006-04-11 01:47:17 +00001137 could return negative values before, on a 32-bit box an ``id()`` result
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001138 was always usable as a hash value before this patch. That's no longer
1139 necessarily so.
1140
1141- Python on OS X 10.3 and above now uses dlopen() (via dynload_shlib.c)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001142 to load extension modules and now provides the dl module. As a result,
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001143 sys.setdlopenflags() now works correctly on these systems. (SF patch
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001144 #1454844)
1145
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001146- Patch #1463867: enhanced garbage collection to allow cleanup of cycles
1147 involving generators that have paused outside of any ``try`` or ``with``
1148 blocks. (In 2.5a1, a paused generator that was part of a reference
1149 cycle could not be garbage collected, regardless of whether it was
1150 paused in a ``try`` or ``with`` block.)
Anthony Baxter82201742006-04-09 15:07:40 +00001151
Anthony Baxter51bcb682006-04-05 14:51:42 +00001152Extension Modules

1157
Georg Brandlbbfe4fa2006-04-11 06:47:43 +00001158- Bug #1467952: os.listdir() now correctly raises an error if readdir()
1159 fails with an error condition.
1160
Gregory P. Smith3adc4aa2006-04-13 19:19:01 +00001161- Fixed bsddb.db.DBError derived exceptions so they can be unpickled.

1163- Bug #1117761: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1164 the cachesize parameter.
1165
1166- Bug #1149413: bsddb.*open() no longer raises an exception when using
1167 a temporary db (file=None) with the 'n' flag to truncate on open.
1168
1169- Bug #1332852: bsddb module minimum BerkeleyDB version raised to 3.3
1170 as older versions cause excessive test failures.
Gregory P. Smith7f5b6f42006-04-08 07:10:51 +00001171
Armin Rigoa9017c32006-04-19 11:50:27 +00001172- Patch #1062014: AF_UNIX sockets under Linux have a special
1173 abstract namespace that is now fully supported.

1176-------
1177
Peter Astrand7d1d4362006-07-14 14:04:45 +00001178- Bug #1223937: subprocess.CalledProcessError reports the exit status
1179 of the process using the returncode attribute, instead of
1180 abusing errno.
1181
Tim Peters711bf302006-04-25 03:31:36 +00001182- Patch #1475231: ``doctest`` has a new ``SKIP`` option, which causes
1183 a doctest to be skipped (the code is not run, and the expected output
1184 or exception is ignored).
1185
Nick Coghlanda2268f2006-04-24 04:37:15 +00001186- Fixed contextlib.nested to cope with exceptions being raised and
1187 caught inside exit handlers.
1188
Greg Wardab05edc2006-04-23 03:47:58 +00001189- Updated optparse module to Optik 1.5.1 (allow numeric constants in
1190 hex, octal, or binary; add ``append_const`` action; keep going if
1191 gettext cannot be imported; added ``OptionParser.destroy()`` method;
1192 added ``epilog`` for better help generation).
1193
Tim Peters21fbd572006-04-21 21:18:10 +00001194- Bug #1473760: ``tempfile.TemporaryFile()`` could hang on Windows, when
1195 called from a thread spawned as a side effect of importing a module.
1196
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001197- The pydoc module now supports documenting packages contained in
1198 .zip or .egg files.
1199
1200- The pkgutil module now has several new utility functions, such
1201 as ``walk_packages()`` to support working with packages that are either
1202 in the filesystem or zip files.
1203
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001204- The mailbox module can now modify and delete messages from
1205 mailboxes, in addition to simply reading them. Thanks to Gregory
1206 K. Johnson for writing the code, and to the 2005 Google Summer of
1207 Code for funding his work.
Phillip J. Eby17a35f92006-04-18 16:45:14 +00001208
Tim Petersc7605f22006-04-17 21:12:33 +00001209- The ``__del__`` method of class ``local`` in module ``_threading_local``
1210 returned before accomplishing any of its intended cleanup.
1211
Martin v. Löwisbd30f522006-04-17 17:08:37 +00001212- Patch #790710: Add breakpoint command lists in pdb.

1217
Anthony Baxtere29002c2006-04-12 12:07:31 +00001218- SimpleXMLRPCServer relied on the fcntl module, which is unavailable on
1219 Windows. Bug #1469163.
1220
Phillip J. Eby47032112006-04-11 01:07:43 +00001221- The warnings, linecache, inspect, traceback, site, and doctest modules
1222 were updated to work correctly with modules imported from zipfiles or

1265
Phillip J. Eby51dd7d92006-04-11 01:21:31 +00001266- The test_contextlib test in 2.5a1 wasn't actually run unless you ran
1267 it separately and by hand. It also wasn't cleaning up its changes to
1268 the current Decimal context.
1269
Thomas Woutersabd08882006-04-26 15:53:30 +00001270- regrtest.py now has a -M option to run tests that test the new limits of
1271 containers, on 64-bit architectures. Running these tests is only sensible
1272 on 64-bit machines with more than two gigabytes of memory. The argument

1300-----------------
1301
Nick Coghlan43832302006-04-23 17:04:07 +00001302- PEP 338: -m command line switch now delegates to runpy.run_module
1303 allowing it to support modules in packages and zipfiles
1304
Martin v. Löwisc661b882006-04-20 04:54:23 +00001305- On Windows, .DLL is not an accepted file name extension for
1306 extension modules anymore; extensions are only found if they
1307 end in .PYD.
1308
Martin v. Löwisea62d252006-04-03 10:56:49 +00001309- Bug #1421664: sys.stderr.encoding is now set to the same value as
1310 sys.stdout.encoding.
1311
Neal Norwitz92e212f2006-04-03 04:48:37 +00001312- __import__ accepts keyword arguments.
1313
Georg Brandlccadf842006-03-31 18:54:53 +00001314- Patch #1460496: round() now accepts keyword arguments.
1315
Anthony Baxter262c00a2006-03-30 10:53:17 +00001316- Fixed bug #1459029 - unicode reprs were double-escaped.
1317
Hye-Shik Changd478f342006-03-23 12:32:36 +00001318- Patch #1396919: The system scope threads are reenabled on FreeBSD
1319 5.4 and later versions.
1320
Neal Norwitze98ccf62006-03-23 05:39:47 +00001321- Bug #1115379: Compiling a Unicode string with an encoding declaration
1322 now gives a SyntaxError.
1323
Georg Brandlabd1ff82006-03-18 07:59:59 +00001324- Previously, Python code had no easy way to access the contents of a
1325 cell object. Now, a ``cell_contents`` attribute has been added
1326 (closes patch #1170323).
1327
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001328- Patch #1123430: Python's small-object allocator now returns an arena to
1329 the system ``free()`` when all memory within an arena becomes unused
1330 again. Prior to Python 2.5, arenas (256KB chunks of memory) were never
1331 freed. Some applications will see a drop in virtual memory size now,
1332 especially long-running applications that, from time to time, temporarily
1333 use a large number of small objects. Note that when Python returns an
1334 arena to the platform C's ``free()``, there's no guarantee that the
Andrew M. Kuchling1da4a942006-04-22 02:32:43 +00001335 platform C library will in turn return that memory to the operating system.
1336 The effect of the patch is to stop making that impossible, and in tests it
Tim Peterscf79aac2006-03-16 01:14:46 +00001337 appears to be effective at least on Microsoft C and gcc-based systems.
1338 Thanks to Evan Jones for hard work and patience.
1339
Georg Brandl533ff6f2006-03-08 18:09:27 +00001340- Patch #1434038: property() now uses the getter's docstring if there is
1341 no "doc" argument given. This makes it possible to legitimately use
1342 property() as a decorator to produce a read-only property.
1343
Guido van Rossum9aa37ab2006-03-07 18:54:08 +00001344- PEP 357, patch 1436368: add an __index__ method to int/long and a matching
1345 nb_index slot to the PyNumberMethods struct. The slot is consulted instead
1346 of requiring an int or long in slicing and a few other contexts, enabling
1347 other objects (e.g. Numeric Python's integers) to be used as slice indices.
1348
Neal Norwitz995acdf2006-03-07 05:01:00 +00001349- Fixed various bugs reported by Coverity's Prevent tool.
1350
Brett Cannonbf364092006-03-01 04:25:17 +00001351- PEP 352, patch #1104669: Make exceptions new-style objects. Introduced the
1352 new exception base class, BaseException, which has a new message attribute.
1353 KeyboardInterrupt and SystemExit to directly inherit from BaseException now.
1354 Raising a string exception now raises a DeprecationWarning.
1355
Thomas Woutersfb609f42006-02-28 16:37:25 +00001356- Patch #1438387, PEP 328: relative and absolute imports. Imports can now be
1357 explicitly relative, using 'from .module import name' to mean 'from the same
1358 package as this module is in. Imports without dots still default to the
1359 old relative-then-absolute, unless 'from __future__ import
1360 absolute_import' is used.
1361
Brett Cannona7446e32006-02-27 23:39:10 +00001362- Properly check if 'warnings' raises an exception (usually when a filter set
1363 to "error" is triggered) when raising a warning for raising string
1364 exceptions.
1365
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001366- CO_GENERATOR_ALLOWED is no longer defined. This behavior is the default.
Neal Norwitz0023a2f2006-02-27 23:24:48 +00001367 The name was removed from Include/code.h.
1368
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001369- PEP 308: conditional expressions were added: (x if cond else y).
Neal Norwitzeb651252006-02-27 16:47:12 +00001370
Guido van Rossum1968ad32006-02-25 22:38:04 +00001371- Patch 1433928:
1372 - The copy module now "copies" function objects (as atomic objects).
1373 - dict.__getitem__ now looks for a __missing__ hook before raising
1374 KeyError.
1375
Tim Peters84ef21c2006-02-28 20:39:06 +00001376- PEP 343: with statement implemented. Needs ``from __future__ import
1377 with_statement``. Use of 'with' as a variable will generate a warning.
1378 Use of 'as' as a variable will also generate a warning (unless it's
Neal Norwitz055ec242006-02-28 20:06:49 +00001379 part of an import statement).
Guido van Rossum1a5e21e2006-02-28 21:57:43 +00001380 The following objects have __context__ methods:
1381 - The built-in file type.
1382 - The thread.LockType type.
1383 - The following types defined by the threading module:
1384 Lock, RLock, Condition, Semaphore, BoundedSemaphore.
1385 - The decimal.Context class.
Guido van Rossumc2e20742006-02-27 22:32:47 +00001386
Marc-André Lemburgfe4b34c2006-02-19 15:22:22 +00001387- Fix the encodings package codec search function to only search
1388 inside its own package. Fixes problem reported in patch #1433198.
1389
1390 Note: Codec packages should implement and register their own
1391 codec search function. PEP 100 has the details.
1392
Tim Peters9ea89d22006-06-04 03:26:02 +00001393- PEP 353: Using ``Py_ssize_t`` as the index type.
1394
1395- ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` builds now add ``4*sizeof(size_t)`` bytes of debugging
1396 info to each allocated block, since the ``Py_ssize_t`` changes (PEP 353)
1397 now allow Python to make use of memory blocks exceeding 2**32 bytes for
1398 some purposes on 64-bit boxes. A ``PYMALLOC_DEBUG`` build was limited
1399 to 4-byte allocations before.
Martin v. Löwis18e16552006-02-15 17:27:45 +00001400
Neal Norwitzfc76d632006-01-10 06:03:13 +00001401- Patch #1400181, fix unicode string formatting to not use the locale.
1402 This is how string objects work. u'%f' could use , instead of .
1403 for the decimal point. Now both strings and unicode always use periods.
1404
Neal Norwitz671b9e32006-01-09 07:07:12 +00001405- Bug #1244610, #1392915, fix build problem on OpenBSD 3.7 and 3.8.
1406 configure would break checking curses.h.
1407
Georg Brandlcd4d1e82005-12-27 17:37:07 +00001408- Bug #959576: The pwd module is now builtin. This allows Python to be
1409 built on UNIX platforms without $HOME set.
1410
Neal Norwitzc10978f2005-12-19 06:07:16 +00001411- Bug #1072182, fix some potential problems if characters are signed.
1412
Neal Norwitz5d0ad502005-12-19 04:27:42 +00001413- Bug #889500, fix line number on SyntaxWarning for global declarations.
1414
Neal Norwitzdb83eb32005-12-18 05:29:30 +00001415- Bug #1378022, UTF-8 files with a leading BOM crashed the interpreter.
1416
Neal Norwitze7214a12005-12-18 05:03:17 +00001417- Support for converting hex strings to floats no longer works.
1418 This was not portable. float('0x3') now raises a ValueError.
1419
Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001420- Patch #1382163: Expose Subversion revision number to Python. New C API

Barry Warsaw2a38a862005-12-18 01:27:35 +00001422 is now displayed in interactive prompt banner.
1423
Georg Brandlfa166682005-12-17 21:45:17 +00001424- Implementation of PEP 341 - Unification of try/except and try/finally.
1425 "except" clauses can now be written together with a "finally" clause in
Neal Norwitz11ca77e2005-12-17 22:24:12 +00001426 one try statement instead of two nested ones. Patch #1355913.

1432
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001433- Bug #1281408: Py_BuildValue now works correctly even with unsigned longs
Georg Brandlf06e30a2005-11-24 15:37:42 +00001434 and long longs.
1435
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001436- SF Bug #1350188, "setdlopenflags" leads to crash upon "import"
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001437 It was possible for dlerror() to return a NULL pointer, so
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001438 it will now use a default error message in this case.
Neal Norwitz67715f02005-11-09 06:59:35 +00001439
Marc-André Lemburga5bafc42005-10-23 13:43:40 +00001440- Replaced most Unicode charmap codecs with new ones using the
1441 new Unicode translate string feature in the builtin charmap
1442 codec; the codecs were created from the mapping tables available
1443 at ftp.unicode.org and contain a few updates (e.g. the Mac OS
1444 encodings now include a mapping for the Apple logo)
1445
Tim Peterse3547fd2005-12-16 23:13:57 +00001446- Added a few more codecs for Mac OS encodings

1465
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001466- All iterators now have a Boolean value of True. Formerly, some iterators
Raymond Hettinger6b27cda2005-09-24 21:23:05 +00001467 supported a __len__() method which evaluated to False when the iterator
1468 was empty.
1469
Guido van Rossum630db602005-09-20 18:49:54 +00001470- On 64-bit platforms, when __len__() returns a value that cannot be
1471 represented as a C int, raise OverflowError.
1472
Skip Montanarof8948ca2005-09-19 03:54:46 +00001473- test__locale is skipped on OS X < 10.4 (only partial locale support is

Raymond Hettinger9f1a6792005-07-31 01:16:36 +00001494- The implementation of set() and frozenset() was revised to use its
1495 own internal data structure. Memory consumption is reduced by 1/3
1496 and there are modest speed-ups as well. The API is unchanged.
1497
Tim Petersde7990b2005-07-17 23:45:23 +00001498- SF bug #1238681: freed pointer is used in longobject.c:long_pow().
1499
Michael W. Hudson0edc7a02005-07-12 10:21:19 +00001500- SF bug #1229429: PyObject_CallMethod failed to decrement some
1501 reference counts in some error exit cases.
1502
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001503- SF bug #1185883: Python's small-object memory allocator took over
1504 a block managed by the platform C library whenever a realloc specified
1505 a small new size. However, there's no portable way to know then how
Andrew M. Kuchling7034f6b2006-04-01 10:50:08 +00001506 much of the address space following the pointer is valid, so there's no
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001507 portable way to copy data from the C-managed block into Python's
1508 small-object space without risking a memory fault. Python's small-object
1509 realloc now leaves such blocks under the control of the platform C
1510 realloc.
1511
Michael W. Hudsonb8963812005-07-05 15:21:58 +00001512- SF bug #1232517: An overflow error was not detected properly when
1513 attempting to convert a large float to an int in os.utime().
1514
Raymond Hettinger3296e692005-06-29 23:29:56 +00001515- SF bug #1224347: hex longs now print with lowercase letters just
1516 like their int counterparts.
1517
Michael W. Hudson188d4362005-06-20 16:52:57 +00001518- SF bug #1163563: the original fix for bug #1010677 ("thread Module
1519 Breaks PyGILState_Ensure()") broke badly in the case of multiple
1520 interpreter states; back out that fix and do a better job (see
1521 http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-dev/2005-June/054258.html
1522 for a longer write-up of the problem).
1523
Michael W. Hudsondf888462005-06-03 14:41:55 +00001524- SF patch #1180995: marshal now uses a binary format by default when
1525 serializing floats.
1526
Michael W. Hudsonda85a902005-06-01 11:34:22 +00001527- SF patch #1181301: on platforms that appear to use IEEE 754 floats,
1528 the routines that promise to produce IEEE 754 binary representations
1529 of floats now simply copy bytes around.
1530
Skip Montanarobbf12ba2005-05-20 03:07:06 +00001531- bug #967182: disallow opening files with 'wU' or 'aU' as specified by PEP
1532 278.
1533
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001534- patch #1109424: int, long, float, complex, and unicode now check for the
1535 proper magic slot for type conversions when subclassed. Previously the
1536 magic slot was ignored during conversion. Semantics now match the way
1537 subclasses of str always behaved. int/long/float, conversion of an instance
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00001538 to the base class has been moved to the proper nb_* magic slot and out of
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001539 PyNumber_*().
Neal Norwitzcfba5f82006-04-25 05:05:03 +00001540 Thanks Walter Drwald.
Brett Cannonc3647ac2005-04-26 03:45:26 +00001541
Barry Warsawc8d907c2005-04-19 23:43:40 +00001542- Descriptors defined in C with a PyGetSetDef structure, where the setter is
1543 NULL, now raise an AttributeError when attempting to set or delete the
1544 attribute. Previously a TypeError was raised, but this was inconsistent
1545 with the equivalent pure-Python implementation.
1546
Michael W. Hudson774479c2005-04-18 08:46:17 +00001547- It is now safe to call PyGILState_Release() before
1548 PyEval_InitThreads() (note that if there is reason to believe there
1549 are multiple threads around you still must call PyEval_InitThreads()
1550 before using the Python API; this fix is for extension modules that
1551 have no way of knowing if Python is multi-threaded yet).
1552
Michael W. Hudsone3afc592005-04-07 10:11:19 +00001553- Typing Ctrl-C whilst raw_input() was waiting in a build with threads
1554 disabled caused a crash.
1555
Michael W. Hudsonb330adf2005-03-31 09:35:44 +00001556- Bug #1165306: instancemethod_new allowed the creation of a method
1557 with im_class == im_self == NULL, which caused a crash when called.
1558
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001559- Move exception finalisation later in the shutdown process - this

1563
Brett Cannon409d8f22005-03-05 06:47:57 +00001564- Defining a class with empty parentheses is now allowed
Brett Cannonf4189912005-04-09 02:30:16 +00001565 (e.g., ``class C(): pass`` is no longer a syntax error).
1566 Patch #1176012 added support to the 'parser' module and 'compiler' package
1567 (thanks to logistix for that added support).

1581
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00001582- Bug #1074011: closing sys.std{out,err} now causes a flush() and
Martin v. Löwis8e3ca8a2005-01-23 09:41:49 +00001583 an ferror() call.
1584
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00001585- min() and max() now support key= arguments with the same meaning as in

Jeremy Hyltonab630502005-02-04 18:44:06 +00001596- The parser did not complain about future statements in illegal
1597 positions. It once again reports a syntax error if a future
1598 statement occurs after anything other than a doc string.
1599
Neil Schemenauercf52c072005-08-12 17:34:58 +00001600- Change the %s format specifier for str objects so that it returns a
1601 unicode instance if the argument is not an instance of basestring and
1602 calling __str__ on the argument returns a unicode instance.
1603
Tim Petersf4e69282006-02-27 17:15:31 +00001604- Patch #1413181: changed ``PyThreadState_Delete()`` to forget about the
1605 current thread state when the auto-GIL-state machinery knows about
1606 it (since the thread state is being deleted, continuing to remember it
1607 can't help, but can hurt if another thread happens to get created with
1608 the same thread id).

Georg Brandl828fdef2006-04-01 08:59:03 +00001819 a DB-API interface in the standard library. You'll need sqlite 3.0.8 or
Tim Peters3a5e8b12006-04-11 01:44:07 +00001820 later to build this - if you have an earlier version, the C extension
Anthony Baxterc51ee692006-04-01 00:57:31 +00001821 module will not be built.

1846
Barry Warsaw4d90bbd2006-03-22 02:45:50 +00001847- email 4.0 package now integrated. This is largely the same as the email 3.0
1848 package that was included in Python 2.3, except that PEP 8 module names are
1849 now used (e.g. mail.message instead of email.Message). The MIME classes
1850 have been moved to a subpackage (e.g. email.mime.text instead of
1851 email.MIMEText). The old names are still supported for now. Several
1852 deprecated Message methods have been removed and lots of bugs have been
1853 fixed. More details can be found in the email package documentation.

2068 allows other classes to implement __radd__ style methods and have them
2069 work as expected.
2070
Raymond Hettingerbea3f6f2005-03-15 04:59:17 +00002071- Bug #1163325: Decimal infinities failed to hash. Attempting to

2127
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002128- Enhancements to the csv module:
2129
2130 + Dialects are now validated by the underlying C code, better
Georg Brandl7eb4b7d2005-07-22 21:49:32 +00002131 reflecting its capabilities, and improving its compliance with
Tim Petersecc6e6a2005-07-10 22:30:55 +00002132 PEP 305.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002133 + Dialect parameter parsing has been re-implemented to improve error
2134 reporting.
2135 + quotechar=None and quoting=QUOTE_NONE now work the way PEP 305
2136 dictates.
2137 + the parser now removes the escapechar prefix from escaped characters.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002138 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the writer now tests for numeric
Andrew M. Kuchling6db67822006-04-18 14:04:57 +00002139 types, rather than any object that can be represented as a numeric.
Andrew McNamara0f0599d2005-01-12 09:45:18 +00002140 + when quoting=QUOTE_NONNUMERIC, the reader now casts unquoted fields
2141 to floats.
Andrew McNamaraf69d94f2005-01-13 11:30:54 +00002142 + reader now allows \r characters to be quoted (previously it only allowed
2143 \n to be quoted).
Andrew McNamarac89f2842005-01-12 07:44:42 +00002144 + writer doublequote handling improved.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002145 + Dialect classes passed to the module are no longer instantiated by
2146 the module before being parsed (the former validation scheme required
2147 this, but the mechanism was unreliable).
2148 + The dialect registry now contains instances of the internal
2149 C-coded dialect type, rather than references to python objects.
2150 + the internal c-coded dialect type is now immutable.
2151 + register_dialect now accepts the same keyword dialect specifications
2152 as the reader and writer, allowing the user to register dialects
2153 without first creating a dialect class.
2154 + a configurable limit to the size of parsed fields has been added -
2155 previously, an unmatched quote character could result in the entire
2156 file being read into the field buffer before an error was reported.
Andrew McNamara31d88962005-01-12 03:45:10 +00002157 + A new module method csv.field_size_limit() has been added that sets
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002158 the parser field size limit (returning the former limit). The initial
2159 limit is 128kB.
Andrew McNamara7f2053e2005-01-12 11:17:16 +00002160 + A line_num attribute has been added to the reader object, which tracks
2161 the number of lines read from the source iterator. This is not
2162 the same as the number of records returned, as records can span
2163 multiple lines.
Andrew McNamaraa08eecb2005-01-12 03:25:27 +00002164 + reader and writer objects were not being registered with the cyclic-GC.
2165 This has been fixed.
2166
Brett Cannone6539c42005-01-08 02:43:53 +00002167- _DummyThread objects in the threading module now delete self.__block that is
2168 inherited from _Thread since it uses up a lock allocated by 'thread'. The
2169 lock primitives tend to be limited in number and thus should not be wasted on
2170 a _DummyThread object. Fixes bug #1089632.
2171
Raymond Hettinger97db05d2005-01-07 08:15:41 +00002172- The imghdr module now detects Exif files.
2173

2175 (Bug #951915).
2176
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002177- locale.py now uses an updated locale alias table (built using
2178 Tools/i18n/makelocalealias.py, a tool to parse the X11 locale
2179 alias file); the encoding lookup was enhanced to use Python's
Andrew M. Kuchling88b85822005-08-23 00:57:07 +00002180 encoding alias table.
Marc-André Lemburgbb4f1bd2004-12-10 21:58:14 +00002181
Raymond Hettinger3557f422004-12-07 12:02:02 +00002182- moved deprecated modules to Lib/lib-old: whrandom, tzparse, statcache.
2183
Raymond Hettingera6b45cc2004-12-07 07:05:57 +00002184- the pickle module no longer accepts the deprecated None option in the
2185 args tuple returned by __reduce__().
2186
Brett Cannon84667c02004-12-07 03:25:18 +00002187- optparse now optionally imports gettext. This allows its use in setup.py.
2188
Raymond Hettinger3489cad2004-12-05 05:20:42 +00002189- the pickle module no longer uses the deprecated bin parameter.

2194
Raymond Hettingerf3fa9462004-12-05 01:58:09 +00002195- the filecmp module no longer uses the deprecated use_statcache argument.
2196
Raymond Hettinger664347b2004-12-04 21:21:53 +00002197- unittest.TestCase.run() and unittest.TestSuite.run() can now be successfully
2198 extended or overridden by subclasses. Formerly, the subclassed method would
2199 be ignored by the rest of the module. (Bug #1078905).
2200
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002201- heapq.nsmallest() and heapq.nlargest() now support key= arguments with
Raymond Hettinger3b0c7c22004-12-03 08:30:39 +00002202 the same meaning as in list.sort().
Raymond Hettinger4901a1f2004-12-02 08:59:14 +00002203
Walter Dörwald36733692004-12-22 12:50:50 +00002204- Bug #1076985: ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` now calls ``read()`` only
2205 once when a size argument is given. This prevents a buffer overflow in the
2206 tokenizer with very long source lines.
2207
Barry Warsaw538561e2006-01-01 21:48:54 +00002208- Bug #1083110: ``zlib.decompress.flush()`` would segfault if called
2209 immediately after creating the object, without any intervening
2210 ``.decompress()`` calls.
Andrew M. Kuchling3b585b32004-12-28 20:10:48 +00002211
Skip Montanaro05885812005-01-16 20:48:27 +00002212- The reconvert.quote function can now emit triple-quoted strings. The

2219 correctly.
2220
Walter Dörwaldbc8e6422005-04-21 21:32:03 +00002221- Partial fixes for SF bugs #1163244 and #1175396: If a chunk read by
2222 ``codecs.StreamReader.readline()`` has a trailing "\r", read one more
2223 character even if the user has passed a size parameter to get a proper
2224 line ending. Remove the special handling of a "\r\n" that has been split
2225 between two lines.
2226
Walter Dörwalda47d1c02005-08-30 10:23:14 +00002227- Bug #1251300: On UCS-4 builds the "unicode-internal" codec will now complain
2228 about illegal code points. The codec now supports PEP 293 style error
2229 handlers.
2230
Walter Dörwald78a78b02005-09-01 12:04:29 +00002231- Bug #1235646: ``codecs.StreamRecoder.next()`` now reencodes the data it reads
Walter Dörwaldc5238b82005-09-01 11:56:53 +00002232 from the input stream, so that the output is a byte string in the correct
2233 encoding instead of a unicode string.
Greg Ward40407942005-03-05 02:53:17 +00002234
Gustavo Niemeyer6fa0c5a2005-09-14 08:54:39 +00002235- Bug #1202493: Fixing SRE parser to handle '{}' as perl does, rather than
2236 considering it exactly like a '*'.

2245
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002246- Bug #947906: An object oriented interface has been added to the calendar
2247 module. It's possible to generate HTML calendar now and the module can be
Walter Dörwald48d5e502006-04-01 07:57:00 +00002248 called as a script (e.g. via ``python -mcalendar``). Localized month and
2249 weekday names can be ouput (even if an exotic encoding is used) using
2250 special classes that use unicode.
Walter Dörwald58917a62006-03-31 15:26:22 +00002251

Martin v. Löwise2713be2005-03-08 15:03:08 +00002286- Bug #1158607: Build with --disable-unicode again.
2287
Brett Cannon46d96232005-02-16 00:07:19 +00002288- spwdmodule.c is built only if either HAVE_GETSPNAM or HAVE_HAVE_GETSPENT is
2289 defined. Discovered as a result of not being able to build on OS X.
2290
Brett Cannon516592f2004-12-07 00:42:59 +00002291- setup.py now uses the directories specified in LDFLAGS using the -L option
2292 and in CPPFLAGS using the -I option for adding library and include
2293 directories, respectively, for compiling extension modules against. This has
2294 led to the core being compiled using the values in CPPFLAGS. It also removes
2295 the need for the special-casing of both DarwinPorts and Fink for darwin since
2296 the proper directories can be specified in LDFLAGS (``-L/sw/lib`` for Fink,
2297 ``-L/opt/local/lib`` for DarwinPorts) and CPPFLAGS (``-I/sw/include`` for
2298 Fink, ``-I/opt/local/include`` for DarwinPorts).
2299
Brett Cannon43802422005-02-10 20:48:03 +00002300- Test in configure.in that checks for tzset no longer dependent on tm->tm_zone
2301 to exist in the struct (not required by either ISO C nor the UNIX 2 spec).
2302 Tests for sanity in tzname when HAVE_TZNAME defined were also defined.
2303 Closes bug #1096244. Thanks Gregory Bond.

2306-----
2307
Tim Petersc9d78aa2006-03-26 23:27:58 +00002308- ``PyMem_{Del, DEL}`` and ``PyMem_{Free, FREE}`` no longer map to
2309 ``PyObject_{Free, FREE}``. They map to the system ``free()`` now. If memory
2310 is obtained via the ``PyObject_`` family, it must be released via the
2311 ``PyObject_`` family, and likewise for the ``PyMem_`` family. This has
2312 always been officially true, but when Python's small-object allocator was
2313 introduced, an attempt was made to cater to a few extension modules
2314 discovered at the time that obtained memory via ``PyObject_New`` but
2315 released it via ``PyMem_DEL``. It's years later, and if such code still
2316 exists it will fail now (probably with segfaults, but calling wrong
2317 low-level memory management functions can yield many symptoms).
2318
Raymond Hettingerbeb31012005-08-16 03:47:52 +00002319- Added a C API for set and frozenset objects.

Walter Dörwaldd1c1e102005-10-06 20:29:57 +00002323- Patch #1313939: PyUnicode_DecodeCharmap() accepts a unicode string as the
2324 mapping argument now. This string is used as a mapping table. Byte values
2325 greater than the length of the string and 0xFFFE are treated as undefined
2326 mappings.
