73 passed a value less than or equal to zero.
74
Brett Cannone9746892008-04-12 23:44:07 +000075- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the original Python
76 code has been kept as backup). This will allow for using the 'warning's
77 machinery in such places as the parser where use of pure Python code is not
Brett Cannonb457dda2008-05-02 02:25:09 +000078 possible. Both the ``showarning()`` and ``formatwarning()`` gain an
79 optional 'line' argument which is not called by default for
Brett Cannon8a232cc2008-05-05 05:32:07 +000080 backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting ``warnings.showwarning()`` to
81 an implementation that lacks support for the ``line`` argument will raise a
82 DeprecationWarning.

105
Gregory P. Smithd59fefb2008-04-22 08:11:33 +0000106- The getpass module has been improved on Unix. It now uses /dev/tty
107 by default and uses stderr instead of stdout. A GetPassWarning is
108 issued when input echo cannot be controlled.
Gregory P. Smith41e30182008-04-21 21:31:08 +0000109

125 build documentation for more information.
126
Gregory P. Smithaa63d0d2008-04-06 23:11:17 +0000127- Issue #815646: Individual file objects may now be used from multiple
128 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
129 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
130 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
131
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +0000132- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released
133 libffi3.0.5 version, apart from some small changes to
134 Modules/_ctypes/libffi/configure.ac.
135
Fred Drake46c58c12008-04-04 05:41:30 +0000136- Issue #2385: distutils.core.run_script() makes __file__ available, so the
137 controlled environment will more closely mirror the typical script
138 environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to data files.
139
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +0000140Tests
141-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000142- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining ports
143 to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an effort to
144 facilitate running multiple instances of the entire regression test suite
145 in parallel without issue. test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such
146 that it will always return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case
147 with the previous implementation, especially if socket options had been
148 set that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
149 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception if it
150 is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the SO_REUSEADDR or
151 SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if available, bind_port()
152 will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on the socket it's been passed.
153 This currently only applies to Windows. This option prevents any other
154 sockets from binding to the host/port we've bound to, thus removing the
155 possibility of the 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it,
156 that occurs when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a
157 host/port that's already been bound by another socket. The optional
158 preferred port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
159 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
160
161 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will pass
162 a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an unused port.
163 The temporary socket object is then closed and deleted, and the port is
164 returned. This method should only be used for obtaining an unused port
165 in order to pass to an external program (i.e. the -accept [port] argument
166 to openssl's s_server mode) or as a parameter to a server-oriented class
167 that doesn't give you direct access to the underlying socket used.
168
169 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used for
170 the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and connect).
171
172 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
173 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
174 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
175 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
176
177 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test suite to
178 run in parallel without issue.

184
Thomas Hellerdc96a772008-04-04 10:07:55 +0000185- Issue #2544: On HP-UX systems, use 'gcc -shared' for linking when
186 gcc is used as compiler.
187
Ronald Oussoren580c7fe2008-05-02 19:45:11 +0000188- Issue #2573: On MacOS X it is now possible to install the framework
189 with a different name using --with-framework-name=NAME.

196 platforms which provide the functions through their libm. The
197 files also contains several helpers and constants for math.
198
Benjamin Petersona692c4d2008-04-27 02:28:02 +0000199- Added a new convenience function, PyErr_WarnPy3k, for issuing Py3k

Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +0000433 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +0000434
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000435- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
436
437- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000438
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000439- Issue #1881: An internal parser limit has been increased. Also see
Facundo Batistafc2d0102008-02-23 12:01:13 +0000440 issue 215555 for a discussion.
441
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000442- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
443 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
444 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
445 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
446 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
447 module is:
448 from future_builtins import hex, oct
449
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000450- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
451 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
452 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
453 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
454 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
455 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
456
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000457- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
458 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
459 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and

472
Andrew M. Kuchlingc6511a82008-03-04 01:48:26 +0000473- Clear all free lists during a gc.collect() of the highest generation in order
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +0000474 to allow pymalloc to free more arenas. Python may give back memory to the
475 OS earlier.

479
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000480- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
481 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
482
Christian Heimes6075a822008-02-06 12:44:34 +0000483- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256 entries

507 generator.
508
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000509- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the compiler,
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000510 even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is supposed to be run when
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000511 the condition is false. Now the compiler correctly emits bytecode for the

615 shifts from ints to longs.
616
Brett Cannon0b14f242007-09-30 19:45:10 +0000617- Issue #1686386: Tuple's tp_repr did not take into account the possibility of
618 having a self-referential tuple, which is possible from C code. Nor did
619 object's tp_str consider that a type's tp_str could do something that could
620 lead to an inifinite recursion. Py_ReprEnter() and Py_EnterRecursiveCall(),
621 respectively, fixed the issues.
622
Brett Cannon01531592007-09-17 03:28:34 +0000623- Issue #1164: It was possible to trigger deadlock when using the 'print'

635 PyObject_Call() never calling back out to Python code to trigger recursion
636 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
637 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past
638 its limit. Fixes crashers infinite_rec_(1|2|4|5).py.

Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000685- Bug #1683368: The object.__init__() and object.__new__() methods are
686 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
687 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
688 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
689 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000690 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
691 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000692
Georg Brandl2b869942007-03-17 16:08:45 +0000693- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an object

2041-----
2042
Christian Heimes5b970ad2008-02-06 13:33:44 +00002043- Unified naming convention for free lists and their limits. All free lists
2044 in Object/ are named ``free_list``, the counter ``numfree`` and the upper
2045 limit is a macro ``PyName_MAXFREELIST`` inside an #ifndef block.
2046
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002047- ``PySet_Add()`` can now modify a newly created frozenset. Similarly to
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002048 ``PyTuple_SetItem``, it can be used to populate a brand new frozenset; but
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002049 it does not steal a reference to the added item.
2050
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002051- Added ``PySet_Check()`` and ``PyFrozenSet_Check()`` to the set API.

2060 ``PyFloat_GetInfo()`` to the float API.
2061
2062- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t# of w#
2063 format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even when
2064 PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return incorrect
2065 results with huge strings.
2066
2067- Issue #1629: Renamed Py_Size, Py_Type and Py_Refcnt to Py_SIZE, Py_TYPE
2068 and Py_REFCNT.
2069
2070- PEP 3123: Provide forward compatibility with Python 3.0, while keeping
2071 backwards compatibility. Add Py_Refcnt, Py_Type, Py_Size, and
2072 PyVarObject_HEAD_INIT.
2073

2085 (relevant to strings and sequences of more than 2**31 items).
2086
2087- Make _PyGILState_NoteThreadState() static, it was not used anywhere
2088 outside of pystate.c and should not be necessary.
2089
Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002090- ``PyImport_Import`` and ``PyImport_ImportModule`` now always do absolute
2091 imports. In earlier versions they might have used relative imports under
2092 some conditions.
2093
Andrew M. Kuchlingadc60ab2008-01-04 02:26:00 +00002094- Added case insensitive comparison methods ``PyOS_stricmp(char*, char*)``
