75 passed a value less than or equal to zero.
76
Brett Cannone9746892008-04-12 23:44:07 +000077- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the original Python
78 code has been kept as backup). This will allow for using the 'warning's
79 machinery in such places as the parser where use of pure Python code is not
Brett Cannonb457dda2008-05-02 02:25:09 +000080 possible. Both the ``showarning()`` and ``formatwarning()`` gain an
81 optional 'line' argument which is not called by default for
Brett Cannon8a232cc2008-05-05 05:32:07 +000082 backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting ``warnings.showwarning()`` to
83 an implementation that lacks support for the ``line`` argument will raise a
84 DeprecationWarning.

107
Gregory P. Smithd59fefb2008-04-22 08:11:33 +0000108- The getpass module has been improved on Unix. It now uses /dev/tty
109 by default and uses stderr instead of stdout. A GetPassWarning is
110 issued when input echo cannot be controlled.
Gregory P. Smith41e30182008-04-21 21:31:08 +0000111

128
Gregory P. Smithaa63d0d2008-04-06 23:11:17 +0000129- Issue #815646: Individual file objects may now be used from multiple
130 threads at once without fear of crashing the Python interpreter. If
131 file.close() is called while an object is in use by another thread
132 an IOError exception will be raised and the file will not be closed.
133
Thomas Hellerf7906482008-04-04 19:43:25 +0000134- The bundled libffi copy is now in sync with the recently released
135 libffi3.0.5 version, apart from some small changes to

140 environment. This supports setup.py scripts that refer to data files.
141
Barry Warsawba437742008-04-04 01:34:41 +0000142Tests
143-----
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +0000144- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining ports
145 to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an effort to
146 facilitate running multiple instances of the entire regression test suite
147 in parallel without issue. test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such
148 that it will always return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case
149 with the previous implementation, especially if socket options had been
150 set that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
151 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception if it
152 is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the SO_REUSEADDR or
153 SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if available, bind_port()
154 will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on the socket it's been passed.
155 This currently only applies to Windows. This option prevents any other
156 sockets from binding to the host/port we've bound to, thus removing the
157 possibility of the 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it,
158 that occurs when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a
159 host/port that's already been bound by another socket. The optional
160 preferred port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
161 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
162
163 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will pass
164 a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an unused port.
165 The temporary socket object is then closed and deleted, and the port is
166 returned. This method should only be used for obtaining an unused port
167 in order to pass to an external program (i.e. the -accept [port] argument
168 to openssl's s_server mode) or as a parameter to a server-oriented class
169 that doesn't give you direct access to the underlying socket used.
170
171 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used for
172 the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and connect).
173
174 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
175 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,
176 test_poplib, test_ftplib, test_telnetlib, test_socketserver,
177 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
178
179 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test suite to
180 run in parallel without issue.

186
Thomas Hellerdc96a772008-04-04 10:07:55 +0000187- Issue #2544: On HP-UX systems, use 'gcc -shared' for linking when
188 gcc is used as compiler.
189
Ronald Oussoren580c7fe2008-05-02 19:45:11 +0000190- Issue #2573: On MacOS X it is now possible to install the framework
191 with a different name using --with-framework-name=NAME.

198 platforms which provide the functions through their libm. The
199 files also contains several helpers and constants for math.
200
Benjamin Petersona692c4d2008-04-27 02:28:02 +0000201- Added a new convenience function, PyErr_WarnPy3k, for issuing Py3k

Barry Warsaw52973612008-03-01 02:23:38 +0000435 644. The mode is now inherited from the py file.
Christian Heimes40346852008-02-23 17:52:07 +0000436
Georg Brandlad61bc82008-02-23 15:11:18 +0000437- Issue #2067: file.__exit__() now calls subclasses' close() method.
438
439- Patch #1759: Backport of PEP 3129 class decorators.
Christian Heimes5224d282008-02-23 15:01:05 +0000440

443
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +0000444- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
445 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
446 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
447 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
448 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
449 module is:
450 from future_builtins import hex, oct
451
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +0000452- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
453 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
454 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
455 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
456 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
457 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
458
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +0000459- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new

481
Christian Heimesf75dbef2008-02-08 00:11:31 +0000482- Fixed a minor memory leak in dictobject.c. The content of the free
483 list was not freed on interpreter shutdown.
484
Christian Heimes6075a822008-02-06 12:44:34 +0000485- Limit free list of method and builtin function objects to 256 entries

509 generator.
510
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc31eaafe2008-01-24 22:59:25 +0000511- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the compiler,
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +0000512 even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is supposed to be run when

617 shifts from ints to longs.
618
Brett Cannon0b14f242007-09-30 19:45:10 +0000619- Issue #1686386: Tuple's tp_repr did not take into account the possibility of
620 having a self-referential tuple, which is possible from C code. Nor did
621 object's tp_str consider that a type's tp_str could do something that could
622 lead to an inifinite recursion. Py_ReprEnter() and Py_EnterRecursiveCall(),
623 respectively, fixed the issues.
624
Brett Cannon01531592007-09-17 03:28:34 +0000625- Issue #1164: It was possible to trigger deadlock when using the 'print'

638 depth updates/checks. Required the creation of a static RuntimeError
639 instance in case normalizing an exception put the recursion check value past

688 now stricter in rejecting excess arguments. The only time when
689 either allows excess arguments is when it is not overridden and the
690 other one is. For backwards compatibility, when both are
691 overridden, it is a deprecation warning (for now; maybe a Py3k
Guido van Rossum234b1ff2007-03-23 19:39:01 +0000692 warning later). Also, type.__init__() insists on the same signature
693 as supported by type.__new__().
Guido van Rossum143b5642007-03-23 04:58:42 +0000694
Georg Brandl2b869942007-03-17 16:08:45 +0000695- Patch #1675423: PyComplex_AsCComplex() now tries to convert an object

2043-----
2044
Christian Heimes5b970ad2008-02-06 13:33:44 +00002045- Unified naming convention for free lists and their limits. All free lists
2046 in Object/ are named ``free_list``, the counter ``numfree`` and the upper
2047 limit is a macro ``PyName_MAXFREELIST`` inside an #ifndef block.
2048
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002049- ``PySet_Add()`` can now modify a newly created frozenset. Similarly to
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002050 ``PyTuple_SetItem``, it can be used to populate a brand new frozenset; but
Amaury Forgeot d'Arccab3d982008-02-03 22:51:43 +00002051 it does not steal a reference to the added item.
2052
Vinay Sajipb7edfc42008-04-02 21:10:23 +00002053- Added ``PySet_Check()`` and ``PyFrozenSet_Check()`` to the set API.

2062 ``PyFloat_GetInfo()`` to the float API.
2063
2064- Issue #1521: On 64bit platforms, using PyArgs_ParseTuple with the t# of w#
2065 format code incorrectly truncated the length to an int, even when
2066 PY_SSIZE_T_CLEAN is set. The str.decode method used to return incorrect
2067 results with huge strings.
2068
2069- Issue #1629: Renamed Py_Size, Py_Type and Py_Refcnt to Py_SIZE, Py_TYPE
2070 and Py_REFCNT.
2071

2087 (relevant to strings and sequences of more than 2**31 items).
2088
2089- Make _PyGILState_NoteThreadState() static, it was not used anywhere
2090 outside of pystate.c and should not be necessary.

Christian Heimes000a0742008-01-03 22:16:32 +00002092- ``PyImport_Import`` and ``PyImport_ImportModule`` now always do absolute
2093 imports. In earlier versions they might have used relative imports under
2094 some conditions.
2095
Andrew M. Kuchlingadc60ab2008-01-04 02:26:00 +00002096- Added case insensitive comparison methods ``PyOS_stricmp(char*, char*)``
