Antoine Pitroud0c35152008-12-17 00:38:28 +000015- Issue #2183: Simplify and optimize bytecode for list comprehensions.
16 Original patch by Neal Norwitz.
17
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcad9b5992008-12-10 23:22:49 +000018- Issue #4597: Fixed exception handling when the __exit__ function of a
19 context manager returns a value that cannot be converted to a bool.
20
Jeffrey Yasskinffd42cf2008-12-10 07:35:02 +000021- Issue #4597: Fixed several opcodes that weren't always propagating
22 exceptions.
23
Mark Dickinson826f3fe2008-12-05 21:55:28 +000024- Issue #4445: Replace "sizeof(PyStringObject)" with
25 "offsetof(PyStringObject, ob_sval) + 1" when allocating memory for
26 str instances. On a typical machine this saves 3 bytes of memory
27 (on average) per string allocation.
28
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcdc619012008-11-22 20:01:18 +000029- Issue #3996: On Windows, the PyOS_CheckStack function would cause the
30 interpreter to abort ("Fatal Python error: Could not reset the stack!")
31 instead of throwing a MemoryError.
32
Raymond Hettinger7989a4d2008-12-03 15:42:10 +000033- Issue #3689: The list reversed iterator now supports __length_hint__
34 instead of __len__. Behavior now matches other reversed iterators.
35
Benjamin Petersonc078f922008-11-21 22:27:24 +000036- Issue #4367: Python would segfault during compiling when the unicodedata
37 module couldn't be imported and \N escapes were present.
38
Vinay Sajip213faca2008-12-03 23:22:58 +000039- Issue #4233: Changed semantic of ``_fileio.FileIO``'s ``close()``
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc32265652008-11-20 23:34:31 +000040 method on file objects with closefd=False. The file descriptor is still
41 kept open but the file object behaves like a closed file. The ``FileIO``
42 object also got a new readonly attribute ``closefd``.
43
Benjamin Peterson46cc6d12008-11-19 21:49:09 +000044- Issue #4348: Some bytearray methods returned that didn't cause any change to
45 the bytearray, returned the same bytearray instead of a copy.
46
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc7cfe7ea2008-11-18 22:19:37 +000047- Issue #4317: Fixed a crash in the imageop.rgb2rgb8() function.
48
Benjamin Peterson273c2332008-11-17 22:39:09 +000049- Issue #4230: If ``__getattr__`` is a descriptor, it now functions correctly.
50
Benjamin Peterson6624a9f2008-11-03 15:14:51 +000051- Issue #4048: The parser module now correctly validates relative imports.
52
Benjamin Petersondcee09d2008-10-31 02:16:05 +000053- Issue #4225: ``from __future__ import unicode_literals`` didn't work in an
54 exec statement.
55
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc69a9c5b2008-10-30 21:18:34 +000056- Issue #4176: Fixed a crash when pickling an object which ``__reduce__``
57 method does not return iterators for the 4th and 5th items.
58
Benjamin Petersonbdca9422008-10-26 20:21:13 +000059- Issue #4209: Enabling unicode_literals and the print_function in the same
60 __future__ import didn't work.
61
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000062- Using ``nonlocal`` as a variable name will now raise a Py3k SyntaxWarning
Georg Brandl7fb00ad2008-10-25 07:00:52 +000063 because it is a reserved word in 3.x.
Benjamin Peterson399b1fe2008-10-25 02:53:28 +000064
Hirokazu Yamamoto10a018c2008-10-09 10:00:30 +000065- On windows, os.chdir given unicode was not working if GetCurrentDirectoryW
66 returned a path longer than MAX_PATH. (But It's doubtful this code path is
67 really executed because I cannot move to such directory on win2k)
68
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcd78b9dc2008-10-07 20:32:10 +000069- Issue #4069: When set.remove(element) is used with a set element, the element
70 is temporarily replaced with an equivalent frozenset. But the eventual
71 KeyError would always report the empty frozenset([]) as the missing key. Now
72 it correctly refers to the initial element.
73
Antoine Pitrouae5bece2008-12-06 21:29:24 +000074- Issue #4509: Various issues surrounding resize of bytearray objects to
75 which there are buffer exports.

85 and gets split on a chunk boundary.
86

92 zipimport (or any other conformant PEP 302 loader). Original patch by
93 Alexander Belopolsky.
94
95- Issue #4197: doctests in modules loaded via zipimport (or any other PEP
96 302 conformant loader) will now work correctly in most cases (they
97 are still subject to the constraints that exist for all code running
98 from inside a module loaded via a PEP 302 loader and attempting to
99 perform IO operations based on __file__). Original patch by
100 Alexander Belopolsky.
101
102- Issues #4082 and #4512: Add runpy support to zipimport in a manner that

135 captureWarnings(). This change includes a NullHandler which does nothing;
136 it will be of use to library developers who want to avoid the "No handlers

294
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc05e34492008-09-10 22:04:45 +0000295- Issue #3743: In a few places, PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T was incorrectly used with
296 PyString_FromFormat or PyErr_Format to display size_t values. The macro
297 PY_FORMAT_SIZE_T is designed to select the correct format for the OS
298 ``printf`` function, whereas PyString_FromFormat has an independent
299 implementation and uses "%zd" on all platforms for size_t values.
300 This makes a difference on win64, where ``printf`` needs "%Id" to display
301 64bit values.
302
Benjamin Peterson97179b02008-09-09 20:55:01 +0000303- Issue #3634: _weakref.ref(Exception).__init__() gave invalid return value on

307 object; previously an int would be returned for small values. the __long__
308 method is allowed to return either an int or a long, but the behaviour of
309 float objects should not change to respect backward compatibility.
310
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc3571fbf2008-09-01 19:52:00 +0000311- Issue #3751: str.rpartition would perform a left-partition when called with
312 a unicode argument.

Vinay Sajip35e3b032008-09-01 14:33:59 +0000317 PyArg_ParseTuple and friends, which occurred when the argument for "s*"

Antoine Pitrou0668c622008-08-26 22:42:08 +0000321 match Python 2.5 speed despite the __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__
322 mechanism. In the process, fix a bug where isinstance() and issubclass(),
323 when given a tuple of classes as second argument, were looking up
324 __instancecheck__ / __subclasscheck__ on the tuple rather than on each

Barry Warsaw07a4a382008-08-21 01:15:08 +0000464*Release date: 20-Aug-2008*
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000465
466Core and Builtins
467-----------------
468
Guido van Rossumf8402962008-08-20 15:01:50 +0000469- Issue #1878: Remove Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG from
470 Py_TPFLAGS_DEFAULT when not building the core. This means 3rd party
471 extensions do not automatically benefit from the class attribute
472 cache; they will have to explicitly add Py_TPFLAGS_HAVE_VERSION_TAG
473 to their tp_flags field if they care. This is a backwards
474 compatibility feature; in 3.0, all types will use the cache by
475 default.
476
Benjamin Petersonf647dc12008-08-20 01:27:30 +0000477- Keyword arguments can now follow starred arguments. (``f(a, *args,
478 keyword=23)`` is now valid syntax.)
479
Thomas Heller0ad5ae02008-08-19 19:25:04 +0000480- ctypes function pointers that are COM methods have a boolean True
481 value again.
482
Martin v. Löwisf91d46a2008-08-12 14:49:50 +0000483- Issue #3139: Make buffer-interface thread-safe wrt. PyArg_ParseTuple,
484 by denying s# to parse objects that have a releasebuffer procedure,
485 and introducing s*.
486
Georg Brandl1e13ea92008-08-11 09:07:59 +0000487- Issue #3537: Fix an assertion failure when an empty but presized dict
488 object was stored in the freelist.
489
Mark Dickinsonb6467572008-08-04 21:30:09 +0000490- Issue #1481296: Make long(float('nan')) and int(float('nan')) raise
491 ValueError consistently across platforms.
492
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc39fd6722008-07-31 21:28:03 +0000493- Issue #3479: On platforms where sizeof(int) is smaller than sizeof(long)
494 (64bit Unix, for example), unichr() would truncate its argument and return
495 u'\x00' for unichr(2**32). Now it properly raises an OverflowError.
496
Neal Norwitze7d8be82008-07-31 17:17:14 +0000497- Apply security patches from Apple.
498
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc246daed2008-07-31 00:42:16 +0000499- Issue #2542: Now that issubclass() may call arbitrary code, ensure that
500 PyErr_ExceptionMatches returns 0 when an exception occurs there.
501
Antoine Pitrou92f82162008-07-25 22:22:08 +0000502- Issue #1819: function calls with several named parameters are now on
503 average 35% faster (as measured by pybench).
504
Amaury Forgeot d'Arce4921fe2008-07-21 22:00:38 +0000505- Issue #2378: An unexpected UnboundLocalError or NameError could appear when
506 the python debugger steps into a class statement: the free variables (local
507 variables defined in an outer scope) would be deleted from the outer scope.
508
Gregory P. Smith0470bab2008-07-22 04:46:32 +0000509- Issue #2620: Overflow checking when allocating or reallocating memory
510 was not always being done properly in some python types and extension
511 modules. PyMem_MALLOC, PyMem_REALLOC, PyMem_NEW and PyMem_RESIZE have
512 all been updated to perform better checks and places in the code that
513 would previously leak memory on the error path when such an allocation
514 failed have been fixed.
515
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc90d07172008-07-21 21:36:24 +0000516Library
517-------
518
Hirokazu Yamamoto838c79f2008-08-20 13:14:07 +0000519- Issue #3612: Added some missing basic types in ctypes.wintypes.
520
Benjamin Petersone977ad42008-08-20 01:42:01 +0000521- The methods ``is_in_tuple()``, ``is_vararg()``, and ``is_keywordarg()`` of
522 symtable.Symbol have been deprecated for removal in 3.0 and the next release.
523
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc351ffb82008-08-18 19:23:47 +0000524- Issue #2234: distutils failed for some versions of the cygwin compiler. The
525 version reported by these tools does not necessarily follow the python
526 version numbering scheme, so the module is less strict when parsing it.
527
Nick Coghlanf70385a2008-08-18 12:42:46 +0000528- Issue #2235: Added Py3k warnings for types which will become unhashable
529 under the stricter __hash__ inheritance rules in 3.0. Several types
530 which did not meet the rules for hash invariants and were already
531 unhashable in 3.0 have now been explicitly flagged as unhashable in
532 2.6 as well (collections.Mapping, collections.Set, unittest.TestSuite,
533 xml.dom.minidom.NamedNodeMap, numbers.Number, UserList.UserList)
534
Brett Cannon88f801d2008-08-18 00:46:22 +0000535- Update __all__ for cookielib, csv, os, urllib2, and weakref to include things
536 imported into the module but exposed as part of the module's API.
537
Brett Cannon7b96f072008-08-18 00:41:11 +0000538- Remove an unneeded import of abc.ABCMeta from 'inspect'.
539
Brett Cannon46225e72008-08-18 00:36:52 +0000540- Remove unneeded imports of 'sys' and 'warnings' from 'io'.
541
Brett Cannon25c9d6a2008-08-17 22:10:11 +0000542- Remove unneeded imports of 'warnings' from shelve, filecmp, and dummy_thread.
543
Hirokazu Yamamoto41a81eb2008-08-17 13:10:46 +0000544- Issue #3575: Incremental decoder's decode function now takes bytearray
545 by using 's*' instead of 't#'.
546
Hirokazu Yamamoto7f30a682008-08-17 09:46:56 +0000547- Issue #2222: Fixed reference leak when occured os.rename()
548 fails unicode conversion on 2nd parameter. (windows only)
549
Facundo Batista94f243a2008-08-17 03:38:39 +0000550- Issue 2464. urllib2 now supports a malformation in the URL received
551 in a redirect.
552
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000553- Silence the DeprecationWarning raised when importing mimetools in
Brett Cannon721b1452008-08-16 22:00:27 +0000554 BaseHTTPServer, cgi (and rfc822), httplib.
Brett Cannonabe423e2008-08-16 21:47:07 +0000555
Facundo Batistaeb90b782008-08-16 14:44:07 +0000556- Issue #2776: fixed small issue when handling an URL with double slash
557 after a 302 response in the case of not going through a proxy.
558
Antoine Pitroub90a8be2008-08-15 21:03:21 +0000559- Issue #2676: in the email package, content-type parsing was hanging on
560 pathological input because of quadratic or exponential behaviour of a
561 regular expression.
562
Antoine Pitrou11ec65d2008-08-14 21:04:30 +0000563- Issue #3476: binary buffered reading through the new "io" library is now
564 thread-safe.
565
Brett Cannonbf3157b2008-08-14 05:00:03 +0000566- Silence the DeprecationWarning of rfc822 when it is imported by mimetools
567 since mimetools itself is deprecated. Because modules are cached, all
568 subsequent imports of rfc822 will not raise a visible DeprecationWarning.
569
Antoine Pitrou9fcd4b32008-08-11 17:21:36 +0000570- Issue #3134: shutil referenced undefined WindowsError symbol.
571
Robert Schuppenies14646332008-08-10 11:01:53 +0000572- Issue #1342811: Fix leak in Tkinter.Menu.delete. Commands associated to
573 menu entries were not deleted.
574
Brett Cannon83e81842008-08-09 23:30:55 +0000575- Copied the implementation of reduce() to _functools.reduce() to have a
576 version that did not raise a DeprecationWarning under -3.
577
Antoine Pitrou76b8bee2008-08-09 17:27:23 +0000578- Issue #3205: When iterating over a BZ2File fails allocating memory, raise
579 a MemoryError rather than silently stop the iteration.
580
Guido van Rossum59ce9012008-08-09 14:55:34 +0000581- Issue #3487: sre "bytecode" validator. Passing invalid "re-bytecode"
582 to _sre.compile() will now be rejected. This should not affect anybody
583 since the re.compile() function never generates invalid re-bytecode.
584
Skip Montanaroa032bf42008-08-08 22:52:51 +0000585- Issue #3436: Make csv.DictReader's fieldnames attribute a property so that
586 upon first access it can be automatically initialized from the csv file if
587 it wasn't initialized during instantiation.
588
Brett Cannon3aa2a492008-08-06 22:28:09 +0000589- Issue #2338: Create imp.reload() to help with transitioning to Python 3.0 as
590 the reload() built-in has been removed.
591
Brett Cannon7e30b672008-08-04 21:52:25 +0000592- Changed code in the following modules/packages to remove warnings raised
Brett Cannonc1b76e42008-08-09 23:06:16 +0000593 while running under the ``-3`` flag: aifc, asynchat, asyncore, bdb, bsddb,

Lars Gustäbel727bd0b2008-08-02 11:26:39 +0000600- Issue #3039: Fix tarfile.TarFileCompat.writestr() which always
601 raised an AttributeError.
602
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000603- Issue #2523: Fix quadratic behaviour when read()ing a binary file without
Antoine Pitroude781a42008-08-09 12:43:23 +0000604 asking for a specific length. This problem only affected files opened
605 using the new "io" module, not the built-in open() function.
Benjamin Peterson01a24322008-07-28 23:35:27 +0000606

662
Georg Brandl3e483f62008-07-16 22:57:41 +0000663- Issue #3156: Fix inconsistent behavior of the bytearray type: all
664 its methods now allow for items objects that can be converted to
665 an integer using operator.index().
666
Mark Dickinson64b7e502008-07-16 09:40:03 +0000667- Issue #3360: Fix incorrect parsing of '020000000000.0', which
668 produced a ValueError instead of giving the correct float.
669
Eric Smitha5fa5a22008-07-16 00:11:49 +0000670- Issue #3083: Add alternate (#) formatting for bin, oct, hex output
671 for str.format(). This adds the prefix 0b, 0o, or 0x, respectively.
672
Mark Dickinson7103aa42008-07-15 19:08:33 +0000673- Issue #3008: the float type has a new instance method 'float.hex'
674 and a new class method 'float.fromhex' to convert floating-point
675 numbers to and from hexadecimal strings, respectively.
676
Nick Coghlan6d6bd442008-07-15 15:40:22 +0000677- Issue #2235: __hash__ is once again inherited by default. To allow
678 collections.Hashable to remain meaningful in the presence of the
679 default hash implementation (object.__hash__), it is now possible
680 to explicit block inheritance of hash by setting __hash__=None at
681 the Python level, or tp_hash=PyObject_HashNotImplemented at the C
682 level.
683
Nick Coghlanb028f502008-07-13 14:52:36 +0000684- Issue #3221: Issue a RuntimeWarning instead of raising SystemError if
685 the parent module cannot be found while performing an absolute import.
686 This means that an incorrectly defined __package__ attribute will
687 now only prevent relative imports in that module rather than causing
688 all imports from that module to fail.
689
Nick Coghlan14ff9942008-07-08 14:21:42 +0000690- Issue #2517: Allow unicode messages in Exceptions again by correctly
691 bypassing the instance dictionary when looking up __unicode__ on
692 new-style classes.
693
Amaury Forgeot d'Arcbdd941f2008-07-01 20:38:04 +0000694- Issue #3242: Fix a crash inside the print statement, if sys.stdout is

696 another file in sys.stdout.
697
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc1f40c8a2008-06-30 22:42:40 +0000698- Issue #3088: Corrected a race condition in classes derived from

700 another thread's dictionary.
701
Mark Dickinson1ec2fcd2008-06-20 14:53:43 +0000702- Issue #3004: Minor change to slice.indices(): the start and stop
703 arguments are now treated identically, making the behaviour easier
704 to describe and understand. For example, slice(None, -10,
705 1).indices(9) now returns (0, 0, 1) instead of (0, -1, 1), and
706 slice(None, 10, -1).indices(10) returns (9, 9, -1) instead of (9,
707 10, -1).
708
Georg Brandl278fc502008-07-19 12:46:12 +0000709- Issue #3219: Calling a function with repeated keyword arguments,
710 f(a=2, a=23), would not cause a syntax error. This was a regression
711 from 2.4 caused by the switch to the new compiler.

Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000749- Issue #839496: SimpleHTTPServer used to open text files in text mode. This is
750 both unnecessary (HTTP allows text content to be sent in several forms) and
Andrew M. Kuchlingcc3f2b12008-07-10 14:43:31 +0000751 wrong because the actual transmitted size could differ from the
Amaury Forgeot d'Arc0f7cddc2008-07-06 21:34:39 +0000752 content-length. The problem had been corrected in the 2.4 branch, but never

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001223- Issue #1631171: Re-implement the 'warnings' module in C (the
1224 original Python code has been kept as backup). This will allow for
1225 using the 'warning's machinery in such places as the parser where
1226 use of pure Python code is not possible. Both the ``showarning()``
1227 and ``formatwarning()`` gain an optional 'line' argument which is
1228 not called by default for backwards-compatibility reasons. Setting
1229 ``warnings.showwarning()`` to an implementation that lacks support
1230 for the ``line`` argument will raise a DeprecationWarning.

Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001293- Issue #2550: The approach used by client/server code for obtaining
1294 ports to listen on in network-oriented tests has been refined in an
1295 effort to facilitate running multiple instances of the entire
1296 regression test suite in parallel without issue.
1297 test_support.bind_port() has been fixed such that it will always
1298 return a unique port -- which wasn't always the case with the
1299 previous implementation, especially if socket options had been set
1300 that affected address reuse (i.e. SO_REUSEADDR, SO_REUSEPORT). The
1301 new implementation of bind_port() will actually raise an exception
1302 if it is passed an AF_INET/SOCK_STREAM socket with either the
1303 SO_REUSEADDR or SO_REUSEPORT socket option set. Furthermore, if
1304 available, bind_port() will set the SO_EXCLUSIVEADDRUSE option on
1305 the socket it's been passed. This currently only applies to
1306 Windows. This option prevents any other sockets from binding to the
1307 host/port we've bound to, thus removing the possibility of the
1308 'non-deterministic' behaviour, as Microsoft puts it, that occurs
1309 when a second SOCK_STREAM socket binds and accepts to a host/port
1310 that's already been bound by another socket. The optional preferred
1311 port parameter to bind_port() has been removed. Under no
1312 circumstances should tests be hard coding ports!
1313
1314 test_support.find_unused_port() has also been introduced, which will
1315 pass a temporary socket object to bind_port() in order to obtain an
1316 unused port. The temporary socket object is then closed and
1317 deleted, and the port is returned. This method should only be used
1318 for obtaining an unused port in order to pass to an external program
1319 (i.e. the -accept [port] argument to openssl's s_server mode) or as
1320 a parameter to a server-oriented class that doesn't give you direct
1321 access to the underlying socket used.
1322
1323 Finally, test_support.HOST has been introduced, which should be used
1324 for the host argument of any relevant socket calls (i.e. bind and
1325 connect).
Trent Nelsone41b0062008-04-08 23:47:30 +00001326
1327 The following tests were updated to following the new conventions:
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001328 test_socket, test_smtplib, test_asyncore, test_ssl, test_httplib,

1330 test_asynchat and test_socket_ssl.
1331
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001332 It is now possible for multiple instances of the regression test
1333 suite to run in parallel without issue.

1611
Eric Smitha73fbe72008-02-23 03:09:44 +00001612- Added the future_builtins module, which contains hex() and oct().
1613 These are the PEP 3127 version of these functions, designed to be
1614 compatible with the hex() and oct() builtins from Python 3.0. They
1615 differ slightly in their output formats from the existing, unchanged
1616 Python 2.6 builtins. The expected usage of the future_builtins
1617 module is:
1618 from future_builtins import hex, oct
1619
Eric Smith7ef40bf2008-02-20 23:34:22 +00001620- Issue #1600: Modifed PyOS_ascii_formatd to use at most 2 digit
1621 exponents for exponents with absolute value < 100. Follows C99
1622 standard. This is a change on Windows, which would use 3 digits.
1623 Also, added 'n' to the formats that PyOS_ascii_formatd understands,
1624 so that any alterations it does to the resulting string will be
1625 available in stringlib/formatter.h (for float.__format__).
1626
Eric Smith5a3c1352008-02-19 13:21:56 +00001627- Implemented PEP 3101, Advanced String Formatting. This adds a new
1628 builtin format(); a format() method for str and unicode; a
1629 __format__() method to object, str, unicode, int, long, float, and
1630 datetime; the class string.Formatter; and the C API
1631 PyObject_Format().
1632
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001633- Fixed several potential crashes, all caused by specially crafted
1634 __del__ methods exploiting objects in temporarily inconsistent
1635 state.

1646 memory to the OS earlier.
Christian Heimes3b718a72008-02-14 12:47:33 +00001647
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001648- Issue #2045: Fix an infinite recursion triggered when printing a

1663 calls. Python expected the return type int but the fork familie
1664 returns pi_t.
Christian Heimes951cc0f2008-01-31 23:08:23 +00001665

1680 produced the generator.
Georg Brandl0cdf9a32008-01-26 14:14:20 +00001681
Georg Brandl3ee81df2008-05-17 18:14:43 +00001682- Issue #1920: "while 0" statements were completely removed by the
1683 compiler, even in the presence of an "else" clause, which is
1684 supposed to be run when the condition is false. Now the compiler
